Despite being chronologically the first thing that happens, "Girl Talk" was actually the last thing I wrote for the fic. I did want to include that scene in the initial fic, but Where the Sky Meets the Sea actually starts during episode 4, and the Misako scene's all the way back in episode 1, so the pacing felt weird.

But it ended up being a little bonus prequel thing, so yay!

It was pretty wild writing Jay back at the beginning of his arc after I'd just finished writing him experiencing personal growth. Like, I literally went from writing Jay apologizing to Nya, to Jay doing a microagression on Zane XD.

But enough about Jay, I want to talk about Misako!

Misako's attitude in this scene was partially based on the attitudes I hear from a lot of the older women in my life. Specifically the "boys are just dumb like that" vibe. Everyone's got their coping mechanisms.

Even though the original scene obviously sucked, I did kind of like the idea of Misako giving Nya advice that leaves her feeling unsatisfied. Not that she's necessarily given bad advice, and just having someone in her corner trying to support her is the big thing for Nya, but Misako's words weren't exactly the most comforting to hear.

There's the undercurrent "if we knew how to stop sexism completely then we would have done it already", and Misako's years of experiences and blunt personality very much shape how she specifically deals with Ninjago's sexism.

Misako doesn't mean to be callous with Nya, she's just a very frank person who likes to cut to the chase.

She strikes me as someone who prioritizes efficiency and effectiveness over respectability or comfort. Practicality over social acceptibility. The obvious example in canon is essentially abandoning Lloyd to research the green ninja prophecy. It seems like pretty extreme action, but it's clearly done out of love, and she does find essential information for the fight. You can understand her actions, and also understand why Lloyd would be mad at her.

I may have been kind of cheating by using the explorers club, since it wasn't introduced until a couple of seasons after Skybound, but sue me. When it was revealed in the show that Misako was a member of the explorer's club, it's when her membership has been discontinued, and when asked about this, Misako doesn't seem to care about getting kicked out and goes into a mini disdain fueled rant about how the club is run generally (I can't find the line, but I'm 95% sure it happened).

They never really say why Misako joined the club, but I've inferred it was for the resources, but once Lloyd had fulfilled the green ninja prophecy she was no longer on a time limit, she was done putting up with the club's bullshit. When she was on a time limit however, she quickly learned how to compartmentalize and put up with the club's nonsense so she could focus as much time and energy on circumventing the green ninja prophecy.

I feel like after spending so many years in the club, she'd rather just move on from that organization than stay any longer and try to fight an uphill battle of reformation.

Not that she doesn't want to stand up to sexist jerks and support women generally (she 100% has a soft spot for Nya), she's just had enough of the explorer's club for a lifetime. Although you can definitely see some of the attitude and coping mechanisms she learned from the club in what she says to Nya.

Man, the writers really dropped the ball with Misako. She's so interesting.

but still, im glad i could share this comfort comic i made for myself, and for you guys too. it's a pretty personal one despite the characters not being mine 😅 i hope that you can walk away from this story believing (entirely or not) that someone out there still thinks of you, whether they're from a late/absent loved one who still wants the best for you or a dear friend who will make room in their hearts for you. life will never not be hard, but if you keep them close to your heart, adulting will be bearable 🫂

something something the idea of Will Graham being "the bottom" is disagreeable to me because Will is constantly being invaded, assaulted, overwhelmed by sensations and emotions and people-- so out of control all the time-- that the idea of him willingly losing his control over this borderline-sacred part of his body; receiving during sex, goes against his instinct, goes against his defensive nature

something something Will Graham would only bottom with someone he loves and trusts, completely, and it would be frightening to him; this would be his first time doing so (previously shown to be mostly hetero, used to being the penetrator during sex, prickly/thorny emotional guard, etc)

something something having the ability to choose, to fight, to be "violent" or to be the "strong one" (or to be perceived as) is something Will loves, is shown to love-- this is said to be his "nature"-- and all of these are things seen by society as the behaviour of the sexual 'top'. (He wants control. He needs control. Will Graham is the orderly one out of Hannigram, there was an excellent analysis about order v disorder for them I can link here somewhere, if I remember....)

something something Will Graham has not had a positive relationship with sex in any form previously, one can assume, and so if in a situation with someone like Hannibal whom he cares for and presumably would *want* to have sex with, he would go for the position he is most comfortable with-- and the position he can enjoy most readily, whilst still feeling SAFE ; esp. around Hannibal, who has *invaded* and *controlled* so much of his life-- why would Will let him control *this*?

something something Hannibal is getting his ass destroyed , not the other way around (until some day 7+ years in the future when they're all settled and domestic and married with dogs, and Wil is absolutely going to cry during it, and it's gonna be the most vanilla gentle thing you've ever seen because Hannibal and Will have hurt each other enough. )

It goes along the lines of ; ' And in the tiny window of a classroom door, two boys standing close to each other, so close it looks like they're dancing, even though they leave a little space. But I see their hands twine together. We're here. We're everywhere. ’ and I thought that may be a really interesting drawing concept for byler at their senior prom!

What do you think yuuji missing his two fingers mean? Do you think he still communicates with sukuna?

based on the symbolism of these two fingers (the little finger for promises and the ring finger for eternal love and loyalty) i feel like yuuji looking down at them and choosing not to replace one is like his way of keeping things open for sukuna in the future.

in japan, the little finger is often associated with creativity, romance, and expressing your true feelings. similarly, the ring finger on the left hand is referred to in japan as the "wedding finger" or "marriage finger" as it's a custom that wearing a ring on that finger brings good luck and prosperity during marriage. this belief comes from a theory in chinese traditional medicine that certain parts of the body were connected by "meridians" or pathways that kept energy flowing through the body.

gege loves subtle nods to buddhism and philosophical concepts, but i'm not sure how deep the symbolism for this scene is supposed to run. regardless, i think it's very telling that it's those two fingers specifically that gege chose for yuuji to lose.

yuuji's little finger was ripped off by sukuna (in order to possess megumi) while yuuji's other finger was willingly given up to rika in order to help destroy sukuna. this is extremely fitting because, not only did yuuji fail to keep his promise to protect megumi, but he also committed himself (his entire life) to sukuna. in the beginning, his commitment was to bring about sukuna's true and final death, but now his commitment seems to be to keep the door open for sukuna. and just like sukuna stole away yuuji's promise (and refused to give it back, leaving yuuji to have to be the one to literally tear it back from sukuna), yuuji is also refusing to let go of his own promise that he is willing to accept sukuna and "try again" with him.

i think yuuji can sense sukuna's happiness or at least sukuna's calm and peaceful state in the afterlife. he has faith that sukuna will choose a better path to walk down in the next life. he set sukuna north but he's still waiting with open arms in case sukuna ever chooses to come back to him. and he's accepting of that. he's looking down at his fingers almost fondly, because the worst seems to be over and he has faith in a more hopeful future for both sukuna and himself.

seeing as how there's so much symbolism around fingers in this series, it's very telling that yuuji is okay, even satisfied, with the fact that his fingers are missing. sukuna really did take yuuji's future for his own, because not only did he mark yuuji's body irreversibly, but yuuji is also missing the finger that is commonly used for the ring in marriages. that implies that his future still belongs to sukuna, and vice versa since sukuna's remaining finger was returned to the shed where it was originally found in yuuji's school. so if sukuna ever chooses to reincarnate, he has a clear path he can follow back to yuuji if he wants to. and since yuuji was the one to offer sukuna a better future, he also left an eternal mark on the former king of curses.

it's like he's saying he's still connected to sukuna, that even though their messy, forced marriage and even messier, crazier divorce is over, yuuji is still waiting for sukuna. he's committed himself to sukuna and has hope that they will meet again. just like an ex who refuses to take off the ring from their last marriage, he's still saying he's more than willing to get back together with sukuna if it ever could happen again. he was made for sukuna, he had no choice over that. but the fact that he's still willing to choose sukuna, to want to still be fated to him....

it's so beautifully poetic. i really can't ever get over these two.

anjyu did Not ever think he would end up in this position

so, originally, i was gonna bring back 2 of my eo ocs in ff14 verse for anjyu's retainers--more or less him calling in favours with old business pals/employers, who are happy to oblige because they'd always had a soft spot for him and don't mind helping out (probably still canon tbh)

but then i was on the cc screen as i so often am and i was like. hmm. i’ll mess around and try making a girl, cuz i would get to try out some different clothes on her and oh hey there’s this one au ra face/horns i feel like I never see anyone use, lemme see if I can make a pretty character with--Oh No

the result was nnoi 🥺💕

she/they lesbian who’ll sleep with anyone if it makes her money or gets her info, but having a pretty girl loving up on her is still the most special of occasions. has probably killed somebody before, probably more than once, but it isn't in writing so shhh it didn't happen. once you talk to her enough you quickly realize she’s got too sharp a mind and too good’a skills to spend all her time on the street--she’d thrive with a job where she’s left in charge of anything, a manager rather than an agent. got an iron will, great organization skills, and an eye for detail. they dress sexy for business and the more cleavage or thigh you see the more you know someone is danger and hopefully it won't be you--if they were dressing casually or for personal reasons they'd wear like, a suit instead

she's not much of a people person. people are just a part of Work, and it’s work that she likes most. being busy--not just getting busy--feels good. anjyu tells her "i don’t think i should introduce you to most people i know” and she goes "good, i don’t want to meet 'em."

anjyu met her during his time on the road a while back, they knew each other for a time and got along well, which stands out in nnoi’s memory because she is Not someone who gets along with anyone. she thought anjyu was a real neat and kind fellow. weird, but good. he just,,,,, keeps ending up befriending legitimately dangerous people in the most casual ways. that's just his brand

she left the area before he did, which is unusual for folks he would get to know through working and such--usually he's the one he moves on and continues traveling first. he asked her if she had any plans for what to do next, or where she was going. she said, partly teasing, "no. dunno. just can’t seem to find the job i want to be doing. if you ever happen to find it, you let me know."

And Anjyu Took That Extremely Literally

after he’s at the point in his journey where he becomes able to take on retainers, he doesn’t actually do it, because he can’t think of anyone he knows who’s good with that kind of thing and who he trusts for that kind of job. it’s too stressful to think about, anyways. he puts it off as much as he can, even if he's starting to get buried in things he needs to store and sort out, etc etc

he catches some rumours about an incident where someone was apparently poisoned and robbed after some kind of escort encounter, and from the associated descriptors and details, he was like "huh, that sounds like someone i used to know. that really reminds me of a lot of them. whoever did the crime, not the victim”

so he scrounges up resources to track down whoever did it. not to turn them in or anything, gods no. to hire them for that whole retainer business he needs to get to. since they’re an old friend.
