Hello (good morning?)
I have a question about your chronic illness. We are suspecting that my kid have a form of eds, and we're dealing with recurring presence of mold in our bathroom. Since you live in an Old House™️, I was wondering if you can tell something about wether mold can cause sudden (inexplicable) flare up's? My teen's doctor shrugged it off.
We're calling professionals about the mold regularly, it's not going to completely go away and moving is not an option, so i would need to know if i need to fight this fight more consistently.
Thank you and i hope your migraine is ending soon!
It's 12:30 am and I have post-migraine insomnia, so yea, good morning!
So, here’s where mold could be triggering an EDS flare up. Mast cell instability (there are several types, the type I have is Mast Cell Activation Syndrome or MCAS) has a high rate of comorbidity in EDS due to weird connective tissue issues and mast cells being present in every part of the body.
Mold is a huge mast cell destabalizer and can lead to degranulation, and when mast cells degranulate they dump an inflammatory cocktail into the surrounding tissue.
Closer to the skin this looks like hives or other typical allergic responses, but as previously stated, mast cells are in every part of the body including deep connective tissue and that's when mast cells flaring up can exacerbate the symptoms of EDS.
I know for me when I’m around mold, my joints become excruciating. Like it just feels like I’m grinding glass into the sockets and I’m either stiff as a board or like a puppet with my strings cut. I also become listless and more disposed to idiopathic anaphylaxis, but that's due to my mast cell dysfunction which, when we unknowingly had mold in our house, went from moderate to severe.
So your kid might not have a full-blown mast cell disorder, but if they’re having EDS flare-ups around mold that’s a red flag you need to be watchful for and fighting pretty regularly.
We ended up having to rip out our entire basement after we found black mold in the walls. (I could smell it. The mold remedial company said we had “a bit of damp, nothing to worry about” but my partner believed me and started cutting into the walls and what we found was a nightmare that spanned the entire finished basement 😱. There’s pics somewhere in my blog.) and a few weeks after we did my health began to stabilize.
So yeah, get on top of that as best you can. Mold is a bitch at the best of times, but it’s even worse when there’s weird health stuff already going on. Good luck, you’ve got my sympathy.

Hello! I'm Syd, and I'm tired! In a nutshell, I’m disabled, can't get a job, but also can’t get on disability either, so I have no way to support myself. All I want is to finally move forward with my life, take care of my health, and not have to deal with my abusive family, but without help, I have no way to do that. I’m multiply disabled; I’m autistic and have PTSD and a torn glute, which, thanks to medical neglect, means I rely on a wheelchair and a cane to get around. My doctors also suspect POTS and MCAS, as well as other forms of dysautonomia. I’m in and out of the hospital getting tests and my referrals are getting referrals. On my own, I just can’t afford this forever and I want a diagnosis. The house I am renting is falling apart. My landlord refuses to weatherproof it, and the resulting mold leaves me in full body pain, ruining my health even more. Unfortunately, this is the only place I can get with my awful credit score. Anyone with an abusive family knows how tough it is to survive without that support system. Christmas used to be a time I could spend with the people who loved me most, my grandparents. They wanted me taken care of when they passed away and so they left me an inheritance in a trust fund so it wouldn’t get me kicked off disability. Unfortunately, I was kicked off of disability because of neglect on my father’s part, which dissolved the trust. All the money immediately went to my brother and left me with nothing. My brother refuses to help me no matter how much I’ve asked. I’ve contacted law enforcement, attorneys and social services, all to no avail. For three years I had to take large loans out to survive and rely on abusive roommates, which contributed severely to my mental health issues. I’ve managed to move out of that situation now and with my boyfriend but he can’t work enough hours to afford what we need and take me to my many appointments. We can’t afford to regularly put food on the table. This Gofundme is my last lifeline. $20,000 would let me and my partner stop worrying about how to afford rent and food for a while, put some money towards a motorized wheelchair, and pay for the specialist visits I need. It would buy us some rest. It has been a long, exhausting journey, and there are things I’d like to do that aren’t fighting for my life. I am an artist, and I’m working on a book I’d love to publish some day. Donate to a disabled trans person and help me live long enough to put my mark on the world.
My friend Syd is having a hard time right now and could really use the donations! It's really really hard for them to ask for help so I'm doing it for them lol. They have three hospital visits coming up this week and could use a hand.
If you don't feel like donating for nothing, they also have commissions over on their bsky account!

It's Gastroparesis Awareness Month
Hi! I have gastroparesis and I'm an insufferable know-it-all so let's talk about it!
Gastroparesis, or a paralyzed stomach, is a condition that causes delayed gastric emptying.
This can cause a range of symptoms and complications:
nausea
vomiting
early satiety/fullness
upper gastric pain
heartburn
malabsorption
dehydration
malnutrition
Gastroparesis can be treated by a gastroenterologist, but often needs to be managed by a motility specialist due to a lot of misconceptions about the condition. Providers, especially in the emergency department, will commonly misdiagnose gastroparesis as cannabis-hyperemesis syndome, cyclic vomiting syndrome, gastritis, food poisoning, etc.
There are several commonly known causes of gastroparesis like vagus nerve damage from diabetes, injury to the stomach, and stomach surgery like hernia repair or bariatric surgery. There are also idiopathic cases with no known cause. Other causes of gastroparesis are:
Connective tissue disorders like HSD and EDS (commonly hEDS and cEDS)
Post-viral (like COVID, viral gastritis, mononucleosis/Epstein-Barr)
Restrictive eating disorders
Autoimmune diseases like Systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), Lupus, Hashimoto's
Central nervous system disorders
Gastroparesis also has common comorbidities with conditions like:
POTS and other forms of dysautonomia (POTS, EDS, and gastroparesis are a common triad of diagnoses)
MCAS
SMAS (which can also present with similar symptoms to GP)
Intestinal dysmotility and esophageal dysmotility disorders (known as global dysmotility)
PCOS with insulin resistance
Endometriosis
SIBO/SIFO
Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction
Migraines
Certain medications like Ozempic and other drugs in that class act on the digestive system to delay gastric emptying, which has caused people to be diagnosed with gastroparesis. Some people report that their cases have not gone away since stopping the medication, others report feeling better after stopping. Other drugs like opiates and narcotics can cause delayed gastric and intestinal motility as well, but these are commonly known side effects of those painkiller classes.
Gastroparesis is classed based on severity and graded based on how you respond to treatment.
Severity of delay ranges from mild to very severe, and this is based on your actual stomach retention calculated at 4 hours into a gastric emptying study.
The grading scale ranges from one to three, one being mild and three being gastric failure.
There is no consistent single treatment that is proven to work for gastroparesis, and there is no cure. Treatments can consist of:
Diet changes (3 Step Gastroparesis Diet, liquid diet, oral sole source nutrition)
Prokinetic (motility stimulating) drugs
Anti-nausea medications
Proton-pump inhibitors
Gastric stimulator/gastric pacemaker
Pyloric botox and dilation
G-POEM/pyloroplasty
Post-pyloric tube feeding
Gastric venting/draining
Parenteral nutrition
IV fluids
Other surgical interventions like gastrectomy or rarely, transplant
Gastroparesis is a terrible disease and I hope that if any of these symptoms resonate with you that you can get checked out. I was misdiagnosed for a long time before getting a proper gastroparesis diagnosis, and all it took was a gastric emptying study. This is ESPECIALLY true if you're having post-COVID gastrointestinal problems that are not improving. I almost died from starvation ketoacidosis because of how serious my GP got in a short period of time post-COVID (I had GP before COVID), and now I'm tube reliant for all my nutrition and hydration.
Stay safe friends!

Hey! My name is Sasza and I use he/him pronouns. I am a disabled artist who loves to write and draw characters like me. Sometimes I use a cane. I'm very passionate about accessibility and disability representation in all kinds of media - books, comics, video games, and any other kind of art that's out there.

I have Pituitary Dwarfism/Proportional Dwarfism, Myoclonic Epilepsy, and a Speech Disorder. I used to have a Port-a-cath, Picc-Lines, and a feeding tube, amongst many other things. Phew, now that that's over. I love every art form with a favour towards music, writing and the fiber arts. I love seeing representation no matter how big or small especially in medias that rep is often glossed over!

I'm also visibly disabled (one of those people who looks autistic) and transmasc. Hello everyone! I'm a new mod, and you can call me Zohar. I'm a writer of fantasy and sci-fi for the most part, and definitely prioritize disability, LGBT, and Indigenous representation in my work. I am Blind with a form of Albinism/strabismus/ptosis, along with some hearing loss. I am intersex/transgender with mixed gonadal dysgenesis (XO/XY Turner Syndrome) that goes hand in hand with GHD/pituitary dwarfism and affects my skeletal and hormonal health. Icarus
[Large Text: Icarus]
Hello all! My name is Icarus (He/Him). I'm a new mod here and a writer of original work (Primarily contemporary short fiction and cosmic horror) with some fanfiction on the side. I have been diagnosed with ADHD, autism, PTSD, Tourette's Syndrome along with several other mental and physical health conditions. I also had epilepsy, asthma, and a heart condition as a child but have since grown out of them. I am currently seeking a diagnosis for something causing a few different symptoms including chronic pain, mobility issues, sensitivity in my joints/bones, progressive vision loss (Currently to the point where I have very little to no peripheral vision), and dizziness/fainting episodes. I am a full time cane user at the advice of my physio. I am also a gay trans man and in full-time university studies.
Jess
[Large text: Jess]
Hey y'all! I'm Jess, and I use she/her. I'm 35, and I work full time behind the scenes in the grocery industry (in an office, designing shelf layouts!). I enjoy writing and reading slice-of-life stories mostly. I especially like exploring how certain magical elements can be parallels for disability. I also do art, including some 3D illusion chalk art. As for my disabilities: I have multiple sclerosis, and a few issues that have come from that, including severe permanent damage from optic neuritis. I was briefly 100% blind in my left eye, but a small amount of vision returned. The residual vision causes some hard-to-describe double vision, so I wear a completely opaque occlusive contact lens on my bad eye to help me see more clearly. I also had a period of time when I suffered from paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia, a rare movement disorder. I also have a body-focused repetitive behavior disorder (dermatillomania) and visible scars from that. I'm looking forward to being helpful!
Patch
[Large Text: Patch]
Howdy! I am The Patchwork Quilt, but please call me Patch. My pronouns can be found on this link . I have several disabilities, including but not limited to Autism, hEDS, Chronic Fatigue, and Dependent Personality Disorder. I am also a system who experienced RAMCOA/TMBC. I use a rollator-style walker that converts to a powerchair. I am currently at college for a degree in disability studies. I can answer asks about my disabilities, as well as others I have personal experience with. In my free time, I like drawing, writing, and TTRPGs! I love my cats. My favorite asks are about creative/magical mobility aids and world-building. I also enjoy helping with research.

Imagine all the SWWSDJ boys and Dachabo are werewolve. Which of them are mostly likely able to protect MC from 6 foot+ killer robots, demons, and ghosts?
Okay im gonna dooooo top 3 fellers!
3: Joseph
Joseph’s tough, but he’s not the biggest fan of causing havoc unless he absolutely has to. But let someone or something actually hurt you?? And he’s going to politely remove you from the area, go back, and remove the problem in the quickest way possible. Dude also probably doesn’t let you see him wolf out often, mainly because he doesn’t want you to look at him like some kind of a monster, so he usually heads out on full moons by himself, but he is VERY capable.
2: Shaun
Creature fucking with his best friend??? That’s not gonna fly for Shaun. He’s already protective when in his human form, but PLEASE do not fuck with his family near a full moon. Shaun’s protective instincts are damn near impenetrable. He can hear when MC stubs their damn toe, but let it be an actual threat? No matter where or what the issue is, Shaun can get there to fix it in five minutes or less. TRUST.
1: Jack
Jack is. A showoff. And very protective and kinda possessive as we know. If he had the opportunity to help you, he’d take it. And he’s gonna make a show of it. Jack’s ready to give you every reason of why he should be your first and only protector. He NEEDS to be the person you call when something’s wrong, so if ripping a robot to shreds or battling a demon til’ its a pile of ash, he’s gonna do it with a smile on his muzzle. Bonus: he’s absolutely coming back to MCA with the dumbest grin asking “Did I do good??”

Hello there - I had a question which I think(?) you might be able to help with. Or at least point me in the direction of more information.
I have a few chronic illnesses and disabilities and as such there's many gremlins I deal with. One thing that crops up a lot are comorbidities between my conditions.
I'm trying to be more vigilant with regards to my health - as a child there were many, many missed opportunities to get my symptoms seen to by a doctor (all squandered due to my parents nor believing me about my symptoms).
Anyway, I wanted to ask about MCAS and if you know it's possible to have it but not realise it?
I've had a few incidents like this, but mostly forgot them or ignored them. But yesterday I ate some basil from my windowsill plant and I had what can only be described as an allergic reaction. I'm not allergic to any foods (as far as I know) but I've eaten from this exact plant before and been fine. I have mint growing next to it which I also ate and it caused the same reaction. Again, I've eaten from this exact plant before. It was like my mouth was burning or stinging and the leaves felt, spicy? In my mouth. I'm not sure how to describe it but I hope you know what I mean. Today I ate from the exact same plants and had no reaction whatsoever.
I've definitely had similar things happen before- but events like yesterday are few and far between. But utterly confounding when they do happen. I have urticaria (diagnosed since age 18) which I suspect is relevant, somehow.
I'm starting to wonder if a lot of my symptoms I've written off have actually been MCAS. But I'm not sure. Do you have any advice around talking to a doctor about this or if I have a leg to stand on so to speak?
Sending my best wishes!
Hey friend, sorry to hear you've been dealing with some neglect.
And considering MCAS was only really recognized as a condition in the last 15 years, it's absolutely possible to have it and not know until symptoms get worse. I was experiencing anaphylactoid reactions my whole childhood, but because I tested negative on IgE tests (I still do), it was dismissed as anxiety right up until I hit my 30s and I experienced my first episode of full-blown idiopathic anaphylaxis.
(Note: anaphylaxis is not a requirement for diagnosis, and not everyone experiences it.)
You should discuss your inconsistent allergies with your doctor or allergist. I would also advise pursuing allergen testing, as new allergens can develop at any time, even if you don't have mast cell instability.
If you suspect some form of mast cell instability may be the root cause of your issues, I'd suggest checking out The Mast Cell Disease Society. (Their website is in the process of being updated, still. But they have good resources there.)
Their signs and symptoms (and triggers) page has recently been updated and is fairly concise:
If any of that rings a bell, it might be worth bringing up with your allergist, but fair warning, not everyone is receptive to the idea of mast cell disorders outside of mastocytosis. (And even then some doctors gaslight their patients to hell and back.)
If you do find yourself in this situation, try joining a couple of support groups to see if there are any MCAS aware doctors in your area, or alternatively, try the TMS physician finder tool:
Sorry if it seems like I'm just throwing a lot of links at you, but they are very useful links and I'm not at my best right now to explain things.
I hope this is helpful and if I missed something, please let me know.
I wish you luck in remedying your chronic health issues <3

Tygers of Pan Tang: Don't Touch Me There EP (1979)
Along with Iron Maiden (The Soundhouse Tapes), Def Leppard (The Def Leppard E.P.), and Saxon (see their eponymous full-length), the Tygers of Pan Tang were one of the earliest New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands to put music to wax in 1979.
And while the Don't Touch Me There 7-inch obviously didn't make as great an impact as those other releases (not even close), the Tygers did enjoy a longer and stronger career run than most of their N.W.O.B.H.M. peers, proving that the early cat gets the, uh, bird.
Hailing from the tiny town of Whitley Bay in Northeastern England, the Tygers of Pan Tang (whose name originated in the Michael Moorcock novel Stormbringer) formed when aspiring vocalist Jess Cox bumped into guitarist Robb Weir at the local pub, in November of '78.
Weir, along with bassist Richard 'Rocky' Laws and drummer Brian Dick, had recently formed a band that combined the lessons of early-'70s metal legends like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple with the do-it-yourself ethos of punk -- the N.W.O.B.H.M. defined.
After much rehearsing and gigging in the surrounding area, the foursome recorded demos at Impulse Studio outside Newcastle, which was soon rebranded to match a newly launched heavy metal-focused label: Neat Records.
This 45-year-old 7-inch therefore carried the historic catalog number of Neat 03 (singles by Fist, White Spirit, and Raven duly followed) when it arrived in late August of '79, but it was quickly licensed to MCA Records and that's the pressing you see here.
I'm not made out of money, kids ...
And I won't lie to you by suggesting that the Tygers of Pan Tang came roaring out of their cages with raw talent as sharp as their claws (but then, neither did Maiden, Saxon and Leppard), because none of these three tracks have earned heavy metal immortality.
Instead, the titular cut proved that the band -- and Cox, in particular -- weren't yet ready for prime time, though the singer's rather embarrassing attempt at flirty lyrics didn't stop the song from being re-recorded for the following year's full-length Wild Cat.
Personally, I prefer the workmanlike simplicity of twin B-sides, "Burning Up" and the galloping "Bad Times," which was given an incredibly heavy revision -- fronted by Cox's replacement, John Deverill -- on the 1980 "Hellbound" single.
And the sophomore LP it preceded, Spellbound, remains the Tygers of Pan Tang's finest hour, if you ask me, and it should by all rights have broken them through to a larger audience, on par with Saxon, if not the untouchable Maiden and Leppard.
All of them are obviously still hailed as N.W.O.B.H.M. pioneers.
p.s. -- Rodney Matthews, who would later illustrate the Tygers' Crazy Nights LP, along with many other album covers, more recently created the stunning image overhead for a new deluxe edition of Moorcock's novel.
More Tygers of Pan Tang: Wild Cat, “Hellbound,” Spellbound, Crazy Nights, The Cage.
