Ok so while I'd love to let this blindly stroke my ego, I do have to point out that the Spadesgore collection technically doesn't meet the criteria for an epic novel, I think? Like, not only does an epic require actual high stakes of epic proportions, but the collection was also never technically intended to be one huge thing. If it were turned into a book it'd probably be multiple, like a romance series where each subsequent entry is longer than the last for seemingly no good reason. And the fics themselves wouldn't be individual books, they'd be more like... chapters. This is a really bad analogy let me explain myself-

Since I started expanding the first fic, I planned for the series to be split into Arcs™. Basically, the story is all one continuous thing and belongs in one collection, but by the way the fics are planned/written, they (thus far) follow three major arcs. The first arc, the light world arc, lasts from "A talk by the lake" and concludes with "A series of very, very fortunate events" (about 40,157 words total). The second arc is the dark world arc, which begins with "Sleepy words" and ends with "Surprisingly perfect" (109,904 words in total, thanks in no small part to the beast that is "Royalty"). If turned into books, I'd want those individual arcs to be split into individual books, technically able to stand on their own but following the same overarching story. The third arc (which I don't have a name for yet oops) just got kicked off with "A kind of daydream, but don't call it that" and will encompass the next approx twenty-something fics (whenever I get around to writing them) that I have planned out that (somewhat) neatly wrap up most of the remaining threads I want to explore with these two.

I say most because there's stuff I might want to write for the collection even after that - ideas I left unexplored for the sake of time and cohesion - or even stuff concerning my other Spadesgore AUs that we aren't even factoring into the full word count (yet) that could get their own standalone expansions outside the collection (looking at you, demon AU). All of that is, however, majorly dependent on two factors. 1) how exhausted I feel with the concept of the Spadesgore collection after the third arc is finished, and 2) how I end up feeling about the next chapters of Deltarune. (Though I'll be honest the second point is a LOT less important than the first LMAO)

So, yeah! Thank you for the ask that let me segway into rambling about my godforsaken fic series structure, and I hope you look forward to the next entries in the collection as much as I do!

I am a thirtysomething content creator whose primary expertise is character design.

I have a bachelor's degree in English, never finished my master's, did most of a bachelor's degree in history, and that's it. These are my academic qualifications, no more and no less.

My professional experience is primarily being a freelancer and self-employed creator. Hello to any x files fans out there, I think I am finally ready to start my season 8 journey. Had to pause because I knew what was coming and as someone that was freshly experiencing grief about a year ago, I could not bring myself to continue… 

But!!! After a year of religiously consuming fanfic and reading many many msr/x files think pieces (shout out to @randomfoggytiger @thursdayinspace & @deathsbestgirl, I love scrolling your blogs & reading all of your thoughts!!) and also living vicariously through juni’s (mulders-too-large-shirt, not gonna tag her in case this is spoils something about s8) live blogging, I think I am finally ready to jump back in. 

I am so looking forward to the episodes I haven’t watched (despite already being irked with some plot lines), but I do like to watch source material for myself!! And the x files is truly some source material!!

For a show that was written in the 90s, the way I am sooooo drawn to Scully as a complex,well-rounded female character that I think even the more modern shows sometimes fail to fully capture. Because she’s just so complex and layered and multi dimensional in a way that I relate to and in the way that I see so many of the women in my own life. 

The way Scully is determined and strong and wants to be a boss-ass bitch, but is still sooo kind and empathetic and soft and girly (even though I think she wouldn’t really like to be associated with that term). 

Ugh, just ugh!!! As someone who also constantly struggles with wanting to be feminine and also wanting to be taken seriously!! I get it!! I get her!!! And gillian played this really well imo. There is so much depth to the way scully is portrayed even in times of shitty writing or less than compelling plot points. I have never been so drawn into a female character the way I have with her! 

And Mulder, my beloved. Definitely one of my all-time favourite male characters. He really is very kind and always willing to empathize with the victim. And the way he carries everything that happened with samantha and wraps it in layers and layers of dumb-ass humour, collapsing into his work and falling into his need to save everyone and everything around him. 

What I really like is how he is sooo determined to make the world better in the ways he knows how. And god, the way he claims the need to not trust anyone and be suspicious and question everything but never actually does that at some critical moments!! Because he so badly wants to believe in the goodness of people and wants to believe that he is worth the help, that they see what he’s fighting for and are willing to fight that fight. I want to scream about this so often. There is so much beauty in the subtle vulnerabilities of Mulder’s character and the way that he carries all that!! Again shout out to david for really playing to that in how he acts as Mulder. 

And then you put these two complex, flawed, unhinged individuals together and I have never known peace since!!! In the absolute best way. I have to say in the 15 years of being involved in a whole range of fandoms, I have never been quite as taken with a ship as I have been with msr. The way they fall into each other truly has me clutching at my heart. 

Because it really really is a meeting of minds and values and essences and an inherent understanding of what it means to exist in this world. They both have their own journey with that last one, but I think the way they move through that journey is soooo complementary to each other and that they could have only undertaken that journey once they met. 

… did not mean for this to be an essay haha, but this is what happens when I get started. This was mostly just a post to say if anyone wants to keep me company as I navigate s8 onwards, it would be v v welcomed! Periodic thought posts on the episodes will show up eventually ✨👽🛸

i don't think i've made it any secret that eugene and sunny are my favourites from this game and like. i Do really love their individual characters obviously but honestly thinking about their dynamic (or at least. potential one pre-sunshine update bc there wasn't thaaat much) made me like them more tbh?

like. i think it's very interesting how landkeepers in general and eugene's feelings of emptiness and needing a purpose are meant to parallel one another, and the sunshine update pretty much indirectly confirmed that with the lore regarding landkeepers, to me at least. eugene's whole arc of finding purpose in creating the community garden, by putting good in the world instead of trying to force himself to fit a hero role placed upon himself by his own standards. landkeepers being ordinary people turned into mammon's vessels, their misery being taken advantage of and made only to serve one purpose. and then there's sunny, being someone who was forced into the role of being mammon's pawn, to be someone who someone else wanted her to be.

even if the circumstances are different, i think it's definitely worth looking into the fact that they both are forced to play roles that aren't them - and how they eventually grow past that with help, with eugene eventually opening up to the player leading up to the garden scene, and sunny becoming more confident in being sunny. and i don't know, it's just...very interesting to me that they have things in common there, and it's something that i think about even more now that sunny's a partner. because with her added dialogue, i don't think it's far-fetched to say that it's implied that she's the closest with kayleigh and eugene? after all, her 5 hearts cutscene directly names them, and she even has exclusive dialogue if you've romanced either of them. which...honestly makes sense, considering kayleigh and eugene are always in the cutscenes for sunny's initial quest, while any other partner you might bring is optional. and sunny's dialogue if you romance eugene, it's...actually pretty interesting to me?

for those who haven't seen it, this is it:

"You and Eugene are close, aren’t you? I thought so. Eugene is sure of himself in many ways, and not so much in others… I think you are someone who would help bring out the best in him. The two of you are a good pair, I believe…"

idk, it made me think a lot since...sunny directly calls attention to his struggles. but in the kayleigh romance exclusive dialogue, she doesn't - she comments on how she's happy that two of her friends are close, and mentions how having a bond like that sounds nice. but with eugene, she brings up his struggles, even if not naming them.

which i think about a lot, considering...how closely guarded eugene seems to be regarding those. it takes until his quest is complete for those insecurities to come to light, and for most, that fight is typically one of the last archangels you'll fight (...assuming you're playing the game normally. i did not play this game normally bc mammon was the 3rd archangel i fought iirc). it takes an archangel for him to finally let his guard down enough and talk about his insecurities, even if only for a little. and while yeah, i'm sure sunny might also just be observant about those sort of things, i think it...also kind of indirectly shows that there's definitely some level of trust that he's probably let his guard down around her enough to at least give her some sort of hint about that? if not just briefly talking about it with her.

and by that alone it's enough for me to think, "oh, they're probably close in some way then", but it makes me think more when it comes down to their history with one another while on new wirral. because until sunny stumbled into the cafe and got a makeover, they were pretty much enemies until then. which makes the potential dynamic between them very interesting to me, since there's more of a history there that's more personal - especially with sunny being confirmed to be one of the landkeepers eugene confronts in the beginning cutscene, and with landkeepers paralleling what eugene thinks about himself, with him being a hollow person and all. so their cafe interaction makes me think a lot about sunny's lines during it, particularly when she brings up how she's glad that they're friends now.

this isn't even getting into their one date cutscene, because there's...definitely a bit i can pull from with that too. or at least stuff i can pick out and make educated guesses on. even though i generally don't look at it considering i romance eugene on almost all of my saves lol

...but can i just say right off the bat that the fact that eugene probably was the one to ask her out on the date in the first place is crazy to me bc like. looks at him. looks at his romance route. i struggle to believe that /hj

that aside, i think the fact that they can go on a date if you don't romance eugene kind of...says something in of itself about the fact that they're close? idk. i know you don't need to be close in order to go on a date with someone, but i feel like with how eugene acts with romance in general (just. very nervous about it) and that sunny does outright call them friends, i don't think it's unreasonable to guess that they're pretty friendly with one another? also when considering that sunny did say she enjoyed the date, even if the outcome was a "i don't think i'm currently ready for this" thing. like i think with knowing what was given with eugene's romance route and the fact that sunny did agree in the first place, i want to assume that they're. definitely close to some degree by that point

all of this is to say, i really do like what's presented in-game with eugene and sunny's relationship and thinking about it more in-depth with the scenes given. there's something very interesting to me about exploring their relationship given their similarities and their history together, so i think i'm always gonna gravitate towards writing about them in my one-shots no matter what because of that, lol (...you can tell bc i think it's. quite literally my own fault that the eugene & sunny tag on ao3 is canonized now. bc i keep writing about them. the power of autism i guess). something about how they both were or felt empty, needed some form of purpose in their lives and was given that through the landkeepers in their own ways, but grew as people once they were given the chance to properly break away from that mold that was presented as the only option for themselves (or at least, with how eugene seemed to view his vigilante act with the landkeepers while he was stuck on new wirral).

i wanted to yap about these two, since. i don't see a lot of stuff about these two specifically that isn't from me yelling about them, lmao (wonderful reminder of my wof dragonslayer days, really /hj). and when i do see the rare thing it's usually about the date scene or shipping. which i personally don't care much for even if romantic sunny/eugene has grown on me a little bit (bc sunny and eugene will always be queerplatonic to me always and forever sorry). but also i just generally like seeing stuff about these two so i guess that doesn't matter too much atp lol

I Love tale of two kitties. i thnk its one of the most insightful books into petey and dms character along with obviously introducing lil petey as a character. tale of two kitties is one of the most influential books in my brain when im characterizing petey specificlaly but def dm as well. it just. realy perfeclty shows how petey doesnt have an onchalant bone in his body which is So important for how i personally characterize him. and it realy shows dms selflessness and how he took to fatherhood like a fish to water like . its just. These are my headcanons of Jason with a reader in academics because finals are catching up with me, and I need a cute boy to read geology terms to <3 I didn't make it specifically college au just because not all academically inclined readers experience college/education/academics the same way, and I want to try being inclusive, lol. He understands the exhaustion of pulling an all-nighter, and keeps your caffeine of choice stocked

Unless that caffeine is in energy drinks

He'll keep them stocked, but he's absolutely the type to sit there and rattle off all the reasons you shouldn't be drinking them as if he isn't a smoking vigilante himself.

When he isn't out patrolling or doing Red Hood stuff, he hangs around your apartment, just loitering and body-doubling so you aren't working alone. He'll lie on your bed and read a book while you type away, periodically making you food/snacks or grabbing water, and doing various chores.

He helps you break your routine by taking you to libraries, cafes, and parks to do some of your work, so you don't feel chained to your desk.

He loves it when you start rambling to him about a section that's confusing you or exciting you

It makes him feel valuable and essential when you include him in your work.

After his not-death, he really wishes he could pursue academics as well. When you ask him what a math question equals or for an example of a Modernist author for an essay, he feels like he's still got it—like he really is Smart.

With you, he is more than just his physicality, and he CAN be both a tank of a man and a literary genius.

You see beyond his contradictions and embrace him for them, and he's never quite felt so whole.

He loves seeing your loose hairs blowing around in the wind when you work outdoors, too concentrated on your readings to tuck them away. Loves the bits of bright green pollen caught in your hair, sprinkled all over your clothes in the way you hate

He really loves getting to be the person that brushes his hands across your ass to make sure the pollen is wholly gone, an excuse to grope your ass that has himn unable to hide the way his grin exaggerates his lip scar laughing at your exclamations of being in public.

He loves it when you lose yourself in something and loves getting to be a Witness to you. It's the same feeling when you see a deer at dawn, a fleeting moment of being included in something that will ripple throughout the world beyond yourself in an insignificant but meaningful way.

Sitting in the sunlight with you, reading about glacier advancements to him is closer to warm than he ever thought he'd get to feel again.

It scratches the academic in himself, the little boy who loved reading, who used to see the magic in the world, and that Jason thought couldn't crawl out of the grave with him.

He feels it in your voice's genuine intrigue and excitement when you tell him about Pleistocene fossils, or when you finally break down which quote best exemplifies metaphor in a poem.

It's not felt in the tactical mind he honed with Bruce and as Red Hood, that knows when to pull a trigger, who to interrogate, or how many fingers to break until someone talks.

It's the part of him that insatiably consumed books, a child in a world he didn't understand, looking for friends and people like himself to protect and grow with

He recalls that feeling when he's with you, at your desk at late hours, or in the library with 30 minutes to close.

He feels the amber light of your attention on him even when it isn't. He feels it when you share your grades and results with him first, he feels it when he massages your tension headaches away, and he feels it in how you value his input.

He feels like he's finally found not just a lighthouse to guide himself with and call home, but also a friend and lover to live with at the top.
