Military whump prompts
(because Reddit is down and I’m chronically online)
Hearing the whumpee’s screams over the radio as they’re captured, the rest of the team frozen in horror.
• Patch job in the middle of the battlefield, someone pressing down on a wound with their bare hands, whispering, “Stay with me, okay? Just stay.”
• Post-mission debrief, but the whumpee is barely holding it together, swaying on their feet as the adrenaline wears off.
• The whumpee refusing pain meds because they need to “stay sharp,” only to pass out mid-conversation.
• “I don’t leave people behind,” they growl, limping and bleeding but refusing to abandon the unconscious teammate over their shoulder.
• Waking up in a field hospital, disoriented and panicked, pulling out the IV before being restrained by a firm but gentle voice.
• “We’re not going to make it.” “Yes, we are.” Cue one of them doing something reckless to ensure the other gets out alive.
• Cold, soaked to the bone, huddled in a ruined building during a downpour, one of them feverish while the other desperately tries to keep them awake.
• Hiding an injury to avoid being benched, only for it to get worse at the worst possible moment.
• “You don’t understand—I can’t go back. I can’t be discharged.”
• A high-ranking officer demanding a mission debrief while the whumpee is barely conscious, words slurring, bleeding through their uniform.
• A medic struggling to save the whumpee in the back of a jolting vehicle, yelling for the driver to go faster.
• Post-rescue, sitting by the whumpee’s bedside, counting every beep of the heart monitor like a prayer.

Visiting them in the hospital
"No, no, stop, you don't need to sit up."
"Do you have ANY IDEA how close you came to... t-to..."
"Nothing, sorry, I just... thought you were getting better..."
"The meds make you loopy for a reason, sweetheart. Just let it happen, it's okay."
"Who the fuck did this to you?"
"Wow, you... really downplayed this over the phone."
*Bursts through the door, out of breath* "I came as soon as I heard!!"
"You know what the doctors told me while you were still unconscious? They said that if I hadn't found you and called an ambulance, you wouldn't have made it through the night."
"I know you think hospitalization was unnecessary, but you weren't the one who had to find their [partner/best friend] passed out on the ground in a pool of their own bloody vomit."
"God, your poor face..."
"That cough still doesn't sound good."
"Don't think you're going right back to work once you're out of here. You won't be walking on that injury for a while, I'll be spoiling you rotten~"
"You can go back to sleep if you want, I'm not going anywhere."

random medical facts to use for your hospital whump writing. let your whumpee be a patient today!
if a patient has a seizure that lasts longer than 5 minutes, or if they suffer several seizures, they risk sustaining brain damage — because their brain can’t get oxygen during the seizure.
if a patient’s coughing up blood when they’re lying on their back, make sure to tune their face to the side so that they don’t choke on their own blood (the same applies to vomit too)
chest compression can and often leave patients with broken ribs. because you have to push down hard enough in order to help pump blood from the patient’s heart to their brain (the point is so that the brain gets blood, in order to prevent brain damage), and more often than not, you’ll end up breaking your patient’s ribs — that is normal and okay, because it’s better for your patient to have broken ribs than it is for them to lose their life.
after a course of electroconvulsive therapy, you’ll normally have to give your patient a dose of muscle relaxant, otherwise the aftermath of the shock may cause musculoskeletal complications.
you don't use a defibrillator to shock a patient if they already flat line, because their heart no longer has any electricity. quote "asystole isn't a shockable rhyme, and defibrillator may actually make it harder to restart the heart." (Cleveland Clinic)
the famous, classic "a character was knocked out and they stayed unconscious for hours before they woke up on their own with no lingering damage" trope is actually almost impossible if you want your work to be medically accurate (but if you don’t care about accuracy and are just here for the whump, that is totally fine!). if someone was knocked out and they stayed unconscious for more than several minutes, chances are that they suffer permanent brain damage, so they won't "wake up on their own in the next hour or two and be completely fine without intense medical attention".

Overworked
“It was cruel of her, to send you here,” Supervillain crooned, “to me.”
Hero attempted to thrash, but no muscle responded to his fear. He lay, leaden, upon soft, sweet-smelling cotton; silk swept down overhead and along his peripherals.
The bedspread rustled as Supervillain sat down beside him. He leaned over and ghosted a finger along the side of Hero’s throat, tracing the rough path of bandages, stirring the nerve of the numbed flesh beneath.
“You were her favorite, weren’t you? She trusted you with so much.” Supervillain drew his hand away. He turned his wrist and slid his forefinger and thumb together. Through the bed curtains, candlelight slipped through, catching the dark sheen spread between his fingers.
“And you did so well,” Supervillain drawled, “didn’t you?”
Against the sheets, Hero’s fingers twitched. The movement burned up into his forearm and a small, wretched sound slithered up Hero’s throat.
“She asked so much of you, because she could. You were capable.” He smiled, wiping the blood off his hand with a silvery cloth. “And you were relentless, so eager to prove yourself.”
Humming a slow tune, Supervillain reached down again. A cool finger tip idled at Hero’s hairline, before dragging down. Hero’s face, too, was flooded with the same pulsing numbness as his neck, but he could sense, as if through a hazed film, Villain’s touch rise and fall in short, repeating intervals.
His nail caught, every so often, on something hard, something that struck a chord of dampened pain.
From nose to cheek to jaw, Supervillain’s finger trailed, then stopped.
“I’m sorry.”
The harsh planes of Supervillain’s face softened, drooping in some facsimile of sympathy—an act as incongruous as a diamond melting. Hero’s heart writhed, but his breath remained smooth. A perfect metronome.
Something wasn’t right. His chest, he couldn’t—
“I found you too late.”
Supervillain’s brushed his thumb beneath Hero’s eye, lingering along the damp, swollen skin.
“But it’s okay. You can rest now.” He whispered, and Hero’s lashes sunk, drawn by an unseen weight.
“She can’t ask anything of you again.” His hand curved along Hero’s cheek, too cold to provide comfort, lending only an edge of clarity. “Not here.”
Hero’s mind held to the sensation, even as his eyes fluttered to a close.

When Whumpers disregard medical ethics…
Medical team intubates a chemically paralyzed (but fully conscious) Whumpee after a torture session, casually discussing their survival odds nearby as if Whumpee can’t hear them
Secret government base using prisoners as medical test subjects;
OR using prisoners as test subjects for new tech and/or weapons
Putting implants (GPS trackers, controlled release medication, or maybe something more complex that tracks vitals) into whumpee
Procedures done solely to humiliate (the list is endless)
Sadistic whumper applies restraints for a procedure personally, brushing fingers over whumpee’s bruises just to watch them squirm
Of a similar note: whumper pressing their hand to whumpee’s broken limb under guise of checking for swelling, smiling at the pain reaction
Prisoner of war whumpee captured near death, treated for injuries (but without pain control, can’t be having any of that!) so that they can be interrogated for information later on once they heal
Whumpee injected with or given IV meds that hurt badly or burn going in (especially when a non painful method for administration exists and is totally viable, but Whumper wants them to hurt.)
Setting limbs without analgesia only to break them again (“if you scream, we’ll do this again”)
Needle phobic Whumpees forced to get daily injections

@augustofwhump Day 2 - Bargaining
contents: medical whump, surgery, gore, anaesthesia, sadism, yknow just the general stuff
"Please-"
"Please what?" the Doctor asked, hiding a smile under their mask.
"Just- Just put me under for this. I don't want to- I can't do this anymore."
He really was desperate. After days of being denied painkillers, practically slipping in and out of consciousness, his body trying it's best to recover from the previous procedures, he really couldn't take it much longer. Now he laid on the table once again, strapped down for yet an other operation.
As the Patient begged, the Doctor stopped, studying his pained expression, as if contemplating his fate.
"Okay." they said after an uncomfortably long pause, "If you give me a good enough reason, I'll put you under."
"Like- like what?" he asked under his breath. His head spun. He tried to collect his thoughts, gritting his teeth through the pain as the Doctor continued slicing his way inside his abdomen.
"Tell me why I should do this for you."
He let out a groan, shaking in agony and frustration.
"Come on." the Doctor taunted.
"I-I don't fucking know! I can't really think while you're elbow-deep in my stomach."
The painkillers didn't do much, as usually, the dose kept to the bare minimum, only to stop him from passing out on the table. The sensation of being cut open wasn't really something he got used to, no matter how many times he had to suffer through it.
"How about this." the Doctor started, "If you let me take something, I'll give you anaesthesia. The real kind. You'll fall asleep and won't feel or remember anything."
"Take something?"
"Yes. Something from inside you."
"So like- A finger won't do, right?"
"I don't want to start amputating yet."
The Patient would've started sobbing at the implication, the thought of being slowly hollowed out and having all necessary parts removed, eventually ending up as a limbless shell of a human, kept alive solely at the Doctor's mercy. But he did not have the time or the capacity to really think about that.
He instead considered his chances, closing his eyes shut, attempting to ignore the white-hot pain searing through his body. Everything the Doctor could take, they have already taken. His appendix, gallbladder, parts of his liver, his spleen. His tonsils have been removed when he was a child– and he wasn't even sure if that would have sufficed for them.
"A-A rib?" he said, which granted a surprised raise of eyebrows from their tormentor. "I mean- there's not much left in me to take."
"I suppose you're right. Although that would mean an other incision. Apart from the one I've already made." they sunk their gloved fingers in the cut in the middle of his abdomen.
"I'm not- I'm not having you take my guts out. Fuck that."
The Doctor laughed.
"Yes, that would've been my first option. But if you're so dead set on your ribs, we can do that." they said while drawing a syringe full of a white substance.
The Patient laid frozen in anticipation, taking small, hitched breaths to avoid the gash on his stomach causing even more pain. Still, his body shook with each inhale. He waited, his eyes hazed over by tears but still following the Doctor's movements. He watched as they pushed the contents of the syringe into the IV line. Then, he felt the calm wash over him, and for the first time in what seemed like years, his consciousness faded to painless nothing.

Fun fact! When people get abdominal CT scans, they may have their wrists strapped above their head so that they don't move and mess up the scan. This would be uncomfortable for anyone, but what if whumpee needed a CT scan and had some trauma related to being restrained...

Injured and scared whumpee who has to be held down and blindfolded while receiving medical treatment, and after a while they stop thrashing around, quietly shivering instead..
When caretaker gently takes off their blindfold, the whumpee's eyes are still locked shut.
They try to comfort them, but whumpee just flinches at the touch.

My favorite whump trope is utter confusion. It’s just so innocent and also a big “oh shit, this is bad” indication. Nothing shows helplessness more than confusion or even amnesia as the result of illness, injury, or deprivation.
When a whumpee wakes up ill or rouses from passing out and they have no clue what’s going on, what happened, where they are, or even who they are. They might not recognize familiar people. Maybe they feel affection, safety, relief, or fear towards the person/people above them, but can’t recall names.
Alternatively, a whumpee gets more and more confused as their condition progresses. This can be from blood loss, intense pain, shock, concussion, hypothermia, heat stroke, dehydration, starvation, and exhaustion as well as fever.
Always remember to give your whumpee slurred, spacey dialogue. Here are some examples:
“….ngh….w-wh’re m’I…..?”(a classic. It’s especially good when the whumpee is in their own bed)
“…wha’s…goin on….?” (when they don’t want to open their eyes and/or people are freaking out over them)
“…wha hppnd...? (When the floor/bed/cold bath/hospital/person’s arms they’re on/in is very different from the last thing they remember)
“…m’scared…” (because that’s their reaction to knowing nothing)
Of course, Caretaker will have to collect themself enough to explain to Whumpee in simple sentences what happened in a way that lessens the severity of what’s really going on. For example:
“It’s okay, it’s me. You had an accident, but we’re patching you up.” (Whumpee’s body is completely broken)
“You’re in bed. You’re not feeling well” (Whumpee passed the fuck out)
“Hey, shhh shhh… We’re just getting your fever down” (Whumpee wakes up thrashing in a cold bath)
I need more examples.
