This is something I feel like I'm seeing more often from people who aren't conservatives too, like if you dislike something on the internet people will practiclly invent a reason that it's "problematic" rather than admit they just don't care for it because I guess they think it holds more weight or is more acceptable? like I see it from more left leaning people and it really concerns me because we should simply not be trying to equate person taste with morality

I so desperately want to be able to convince Trump supporters with facts and logic and empathy, but it’s so important to remember that their ignorance is INTENTIONAL. my mom didn’t let us watch Sleeping Beauty growing up. I asked her why recently and she said, “it was evil.” when I pointed out other movies had similar themes and depictions of evil, and asked what the difference was, she couldn’t. I pressed one more time and she just said, “it felt evil to me. I didn’t like it”. same thing with dune 2: she said it was “dark”, and I was, “literally, like the movie’s lighting? Or the themes?” and she said “I don’t know” and didn’t want to talk about it more. many conservatives genuinely cannot tell the difference between “I don’t like it” and “this is evil” and they do not care to learn despite many chances

I fear that media literacy is at an all time low. Like it's a movie for adults not a Disney after school special. Elizabeth didn't need to say "oh it seems I'm killing myself to achieve an impossible version of myself just to meet standards set by people who can actually never be met" for the meaning of the movie to be "obsession with being "perfect" will kill us" like we are supposed to be able to see Sue literally destroying Elizabeth and Elizabeth allowing it because she's been made to feel it's somehow worth it, and extract from that "oh wow, that's pretty bad actually"

why is it that movies directed by women about beauty standards and/or the state of being valued as a woman only for your looks/appearances are ALWAYS criticized for “not being feminist enough” (ex. barbie, etc.)
