It's not that the Black Rose arc was a bad idea, it was just poorly integrated into the story. I think things would have worked out better if Mel stayed in Piltover and the show played into the fact Piltover is anti-magic and are thus wary of mages.

From a young age, Hyde had been groomed to lead under the tutelage of her mother until she was forced to the maternal role in her time of death. Believing that her passive-aggressive ways of leading were sufficient, she watches as an ordinary scheme shreds her new family to pieces. Suddenly thinking about how alone Mel is at the end of Arcane. Her brother has been dead, I think she watched Elora die, her mother she just helped kill, she rejects the people who share her latent talent with their strings of control they'd bind her with, Jayce has disappeared, and she is on her way to a home that rejected her a lifetime ago with no one she knows come along with her.

😩 Hardest thing about writing Aerith? 

Balance. I do not have it. (I'm cheating here, because this is kind of a blanket complaint across any character I write for.)

I lean too hard into things. Though with Aerith, that somehow becomes easier of a habit to fall into. She's having a bad day, may as well be the worst of her life. She's smiling, walking on clouds (or Cloud's) and nothing is going to bring her down. This girl may be good at keeping her secrets but I refuse to believe that her emotions aren't broadcast across her face like her forehead has a scrolling window of text like. There's putting on a show to dance around not answering a question and then there's being able to hide true emotions and she gets a failing grade in that.

hiiii i'm moony from @otacringe and this is my jojo sideblog or something. u can check my main for more info but for the basics i go by any pronouns, i'm a minor, and i've been into jojo for about 4-5 years (i can't escape. it never ends.)

i don't really do long dni stuff but the same stuff that goes for my main goes here. no bigots, no proshippers, and no south park/hsr/hp/dsmp fans.

the thing about mel is that. like. at 1pm when she gets the autistic patient and mentions her sister being on the spectrum. i wonder how many viewers have already gathered that mel is also ALSO on it. like mel is not just an ordinary anxious woman, she's an autistic woman attempting to hold down one of the most physically and emotionally demanding jobs out there. and doing all of it without admitting to the fact that she's autistic, maybe because she fears it will alter people's opinions of her competency. her sister's in assisted living, and she knows firsthand how people's perspective on you changes. hell, imagine the guilt she has just because of the way she and her sisters' lives differ. here she is struggling through a residency with very little support and there her sister is with very little autonomy compared to other adults her age. and how as a caretaker that gives you guilt anyway, but as a caretaker with the exact same condition as the person you're caring for, just to a different degree that makes it possible for you to fake normalcy at your own detriment but because it's the only option? or maybe mel doesn't know. maybe mel's never been officially diagnosed. maybe she has her suspicions based on the everything about her but doesn't want to get official word, because it would change everything. every day she lives in the horrible midgard between what you know and what everybody else thinks they know about this type of brain you're so intimately familiar with inside out and talking about it in any but the most oblique ways would in some way permanently change your life

the narrative/visual cues in this scene from 1x01 are so important to how the show views mel and langdon’s dynamic and i need to talk about it lol

robby doesn’t really have any friends, nor does he want any. while he is obviously willing to mentor those junior to him at the pitt, he is also very clearly uninterested in their personal lives (with the exception of collins). he’s able to support them when it comes to difficulties on the job but it doesn’t go much further than that.

the issue there is that most of the characters are not leaving their work at work (including robby himself lmao). it is seemingly going home with them and impacting the other parts of their lives. ultimately, they all need to connect with others who understand that feeling and can help them navigate it. mel isn’t as guarded as the rest of them so she makes it pretty apparent that she’s looking for this kind of connection (speaking of, can everyone pls just be friends with her already??? jfc). langdon is more subtle about it, but he's also looking for the exact same thing.

his exchange with robby in this scene is so telling because he clearly sees robby as one of his best friends and robby can barely admit that they're friends at all (which....brutal). langdon is asking for emotional connection/reassurance in that moment and, essentially, being rejected.

and right as this rejection is occurring, mel enters the scene (both literally and figuratively lol). mel, who wants emotional connection and is very willing to give it in return. it feels like a little wink from the show letting you know that these two are going to be actual friends. it’s also a perfectly written starting point for the parallel between robby and langdon’s mentor-mentee relationship and the one that comes to exist between langdon and mel. whereas robby is not attuned enough to langdon to notice his struggles, langdon is constantly checking in with mel to make sure she’s doing okay and then offering up support when she needs it. langdon's not perfect at it and he missteps a few times when it comes to her, but it feels a lot like he is treating mel the way he wishes robby would treat him </3

you then have the added intrigue of robby watching langdon and mel interact for the first time and looking for collins immediately after. as if something about those two possibly reminded robby of himself and collins. i just find the choice to visually parallel langdon/mel and robby/collins in 1x01 to be very curious now that we know robby and collins were romantically involved. and i don’t have much more to say regarding that other than 👀👀👀

tl;dr the framing of mel and langdon’s first real interaction on the show really highlights how important they are/will be to one another.
