Santos is used to the screaming at this point.

Some of it’s distinct words, some of it’s distraught gibberish, and it’s all concerning but no longer enough to provoke any kind of knee-jerk response from her nervous system. In the Pitt, pained cries are just as normal as monitor beeps and gurney wheels squeaking against tile and Dana calling out instructions with the phone at her ear. Now she can even sort of tell what the issue is before she gets there based on the pitch and volume and duration, and her categories become a fun little guessing game that keeps her brain stimulated on the rare occasion when their spread gets a little monotonous.

But one morning Santos hears a shriek from across the room, and her brain knows it’s Mel before her stomach even has time to drop. She doesn’t say another word to the concussed person sitting in front of her before she sprints to the exam bay and finds an angry patient clutching Mel’s gloved hand at a horrific angle, just as Langdon strides in from the other direction and immediately gets to work trying to untangle their fingers.

“I’m gonna need you to let go of Dr. King,” he says with icy calm, planting a knee on the edge of the bed so he can get a better angle. “Can you do that for me, sir?”
