I should write a Dealing with Dragons fic in which Telemain accidentally sends himself back in time and then is so fascinated by the phenomenon that he totally forgets to do anything sensible about the wizards.

Possibly future Telemain tells present Telemain that being married to Morwen is actually useful and gets him to court her. In between getting nerd-sniped, of course.

And future Telemain is like "oh yeah this reminds me of that stasis spell the wizards used to imprison Mendanbar for 16 years" and Morwen is like "the wizards did what now?"

Honestly I always felt cheated out of a proper love story between them anyway. And Morwen's POV would be fun to write.

I’m currently on a reread of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles and I am trying to figure out if it ever says what the wizards’ problem was from the wizards’ perspective?

Like, I know that they got their magic from absorbing magic from the environment around them, and that they could be pretty greedy about it But… Was that it? Did the entire fantasy world just decide to hate them one day, and keep them from getting magic to do whatever it is they did?

It seems like they want to control of the enchanted forest in order to drain magic from it so they could power their spells to do… Something and I don’t remember if it was ever explicitly stated in the books what that thing was. Maybe they were trying to cure cancer or solve world hunger or creative a vaccine for HIV or something. You don’t know. You just saw the wizard staff and robes and made an assumption. 

King Mendanbar never acknowledged the AIDS epidemic, you know.

Even as a young teen I was a little bit shocked that Kazul the dragon ate Zemenar the head wizard at the end of Calling on Dragons— and he was far from the only casualty in that fight— and was very blasé about it, and then in the next book Zemenar’s son Antorell shows up and nobody but him cares that his dad was murdered.

Wizards made themselves a nuisance for a long time in the forest, but they never killed a dragon. They didn’t even kill Mendanbar, though I think they may be responsible for driving him insane by locking him in solitary confinement for a decade and a half. However, the dragons certainly killed a bunch of wizards by their own admission and never once showed any remorse for it. Where is the justice for the wizards? Where is the justice for poor orphaned Antorell?

(don’t even get me started on how shit everyone in the cast treats poor Telemaine, who’s just trying to info dump about his favorite subject. I always liked Telemaine and always got a little peeved when they would get mad and yell at him just for having autism. I think that he and Cimorene would have made a much better match, as both of them are very intelligent and they could challenge each other instead of just… Going to the beach and holding tournaments where they accidentally commit body horror on random participants.)

Anyone have any ideas on how I fairy tale/fantasyify a (portable/)EEG machine? Or know anything that already has?

Specifically working in the world of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles. I might do this for my own characters in their own worlds, but i was thinking of giving Cimorene absence seizures.

I was thinking maybe the wires could be Mendanbar's magic, y'know with those invisible strings? I'm sure Telemain and Morwen could come up with something, but I'm kinda stumped.

oh my god. I forgot how young I was when I first read these books. the most specific memory I have of them is I think keeping this exact one, searching for dragons, in my desk for almost all of third grade in case I needed a book for silent reading time. usually I had a book from the public library or the school library or my teacher's classroom library but sometimes I forgot the book I was reading at home, and so I kept this one in my desk for those emergencies because it was small, and also because I was already well familiar with it. by third grade. I probably read these at least twice over before I turned 8 years old.

anyways I remember this because I've just come to a paragraph with a silly little gag and it's like. the most nothing banter. barely wordplay it's just mendanbar being silly. but I have the vaguest memory—strong enough that I know it's real, but not strong enough for me to remember it specifically—of losing my MIND laughing at it when I was a kid. you know when you're small and you read a silly little joke and you think it's the funniest thing in the world, and then you grow up and reread it and you're like well damn. I mean good for me I guess but damn. it's that. this was the part of the book I remembered most vividly; it might've been my favorite part, and I LOVED these books like a motherfucker when I was small. obviously still do, but I guess I'm not as easily swayed by silly wordplay. mores the disappointment for me bro I can literally hear the inflection I read it with back then in my head when I look at it and I can then hear my seven or eight year old self laughing my fucking ass off. damn I miss being so easy to entertain
