I’ve been re-reading this Psychonauts fic by @magicalmilly and my GOD this scene never fails to make me laugh. Anyway this is my petition to PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE continue this fic it’s been unfinished since 2022 and it was JUST REACHING THE CLIMAX OF PSYCHONAUTS 1-

I'm reading Siege and Storm (Before — chapter 2)

So, I'm not very productive this time, but I found similar reviews on S&B, and I got a little caught up. I think I overestimated my willingness to read the second book right after the first.

1. Malina being a shit, because Alina isn't being honest about her feelings, about her nature. And that's because all the previous attempts to talk about it, Mal basically ignored the point.

2. By the way, yeah, I forgot to complain about this in the last book — the Cut?! What the fuck? let's be honest, we should just remove the "great focus" part from its description. Just great power.

3. Yeah, sure

that a cult had risen up around a Saint who could summon the sun. I didn’t want to think about it. Mal and I had a new life now. We’d left Ravka behind.

she just: deserted after a couple of words from a crazy abuser (at least some of which are proven to be untrue later in the text), turning away from Ravka. She fucked up the opportunity to strengthen her power, which the Darkling allowed her to do even after her desertion (they just watched these assholes for a long time, and only when it became clear that she wasn't going to take responsibility — in fact, she turned her back on Ravka again — Aleksander killed the stag himself), and she turned her back on the country again by fleeing with another idiotic deserter, causing massacre without a purpose or meaning (at least the Darkling had a strategic goal, although it could have been done more cleverly, but that's on the author), and now this.

4. There's an alarming pattern here, by the way: when Alina suppresses her nature while being close to Mal, he thrives. When Alina's condition improved in the Little Palace, Mal's went downhill. While they were in Tsibeya, and Alina had problems, but at least had access to her powers, Mal's condition improved, but not excessively. And now, once again, Mal thrives while Alina is sick.

5. …how does LB turn scenes that were originally intended to be dramatic into something that makes me laugh?

They might as well be afraid of the price the Darkling pays.

In fact, it's funny how Alina's actions directly bit her in the ass, pushing Aleksander even further, aka in harming himself to achieve his goal.

6. Okay, sometimes I forget what a large power the Heartrenders actually have.

Wrong! She's weak and didn't eat — she would have threw up! (I had a terrible morning, so I know)

First of all… poor the Darkling, like it's so narratively obvious, but at the same time makes great sense to the character himself — do you, author, have a stupid bratty protagonist with zero experience and the clever, experienced, ruthless antagonist with a real goal? That's right, in addition to our MC being so unique (to logically make him keep her alive), make him also be attached to her (for deeply personal and emotional reasons), so that at certain moments he will give in to her even when it's not necessary. Which, by the way, proves that he is not the cruel tyrant that everyone but his people and common sense sees him as, but she never thinks about that. The Darkling demonstrated, and then almost explicitly confirmed, that he would have allowed her to take the amplifier herself? No, why would she think about this when Alina would rather pretend that she had some right to his mercy (even though he's already been coddling her for an ridiculous amount of time)? And yes, I know that these concessions will continue on his part.

But the nichevo’ya is very funny. My younger cousin used to call the older one "Kita" instead of Nikita when he was like… three years old maybe? Sounds just as cute 😅.

7. Tamara, but it's not like I care at this point. Especially not about a character I don't care about. *the grim face*

8. I'm actually bored to try and comment about Alina's hypocrisy. Better tell me the story of the Fold creation, and what exactly the Darkling has been trying to do with it for the past "one hundred and twenty. Give or take" years.

*Genya, trying to support her, thinking that Alina blames herself for the deaths of people:*

*Alina, inwardly:* "I only committed the massacre to escape with my co-deserter, and I was still captured back, shit."

Wow. I so don't care about the latters (your conditional 19th century? The war? She wrote to him every week. At best, you'd get a reply once in a few months. At best). I actually think the Darkling did unnecessary movements — let's be honest, I don't think Mal would been writing back/wouldn't make her feel like a shit, cause she wasn't being tortured. Maybe it would actually help him more. Drama Queen? Drama Queen. Miss, you still have no problem with attempts to suggest Genya, of all people, to side with her rapist and tyrant. Your friendship means nothing.

thinking about jon and tim again.. their stupid situationship friendship during their research era with tim flirting with jon and maybe there was something there in the spending time together during lunch breaks and semi dates and dragging jon out of his shell to socialize for once aka taking him to get drinks and bothering jon during work

all that tentative yet receptive awkwardness turning into something way more distant as soon as jon got promoted (over sasha, which tim is still very bitter about)

like yes, they could talk now, but it wasn’t near the same. and tim seems to be the only one who either notices or cares between the two of them that their relationship is way more stilted and different than before

its not like tim can really do anything about it now, not when jon is acting like that. refusing to talk or say anything, refusing to trust them. and of course, tim can’t help but feel bitter about that, too

just talk to him, sasha says. as if it was ever that easy when it came to jonathan sims.
