Spin Off Scenes & Ficlets!

Work Is Published Wednesday!

(Just under the wire... I am SUPER busy with the MD Ren Faire coming up, but I wanted to get this series published before then. )

These various ficlets and short scenes fit within my canon timeline, and mostly feature various Original Characters from the Dregs and the crew of The Wraith. It started with a Queer ficlet challenge here on Tumblr, and became a fun way for me to explore little snippets of my OC’s lives, as well as practice writing succinctly! For all the little introductions, side story lines, and snippets of my Grishaverse OC's lives, check back to this series in the future.

There's some smutty ficlets with Kalu and Senn, some wholesome meetings between Zurye and the Novikovs and then Seile and Meril. We see Cory discover Cob at Fifth Harbor. And Mikhal make Nico feel better after the black eye that Ryo gave the blond bouncer.

“I managed to get us invitations to that masquerade,” she announces when she falls into step beside them, beginning to lead the group back down the road to the inn. “The nobles got distracted by a half-elf that was threatening a nobleman over an ochellian.”

Salzenya felt her face heat up at that, not having realised how loud she’d been during the confrontation. “I am so sorry, I just, I couldn’t…” she stops speaking as she trips over her words, a frown crossing her lips.

Meril places a hand on her shoulder, smiling up at her. “You did good, kid. I can’t stand talk like that either, and I’m glad you know to take a stand for what you believe in.”

Salzenya's smile returns at that. She had often been scorned, even in her own time, for the moments where her mouth would move faster than her brain. It had gotten her in trouble more than a few times, and it brought a sort of relief to know that Meril wasn't mad about it. The older woman had been kind, in her own way, so far, and she didn't want to ruin that kindness as she'd often done before.

And they think maybe, just maybe, it’s okay to seek out companionship with a fight with two literal gods on the horizon. Any port in a storm, as they say. or, a lengthy expansion upon the night before tearstone through the night before minrathous.

A much needed conversation in the gloom of the Necropolis.

Kione gasps dramatically, putting a hand to their mouth as if scandalized. “Am I being taken to the private quarters of the esteemed Professor Volkarin?”

It has the desired effect. A deep red flush descends onto Emmrich’s cheeks as he stammers for just a moment.

“I - well – yes. You are. But it isn’t – you make it sound so - !” Emmrich’s hold on their hand tightens as he regains his composure. He clears his throat. “You are being taken there. It is no different than the time you’ve spent with me at the Lighthouse.”

“I don’t know, this seems a bit more private. More… intimate.” They practically purr the final word.

“You are incorrigible, my dear Rook.”

Melantho questions! Was Melantho interested in/involved with Tamlen pre-mirror? What's Melatho's opinions on humans vs elves (and dwarves if applicable). Opinions on magic/mages/spirits/demons? I'm interested in learning these things as the story goes on but I'm wondering if you know anything upfront/that you want to share upfront.

ahh you read my mind, the first two were exactly what i was thinking about for her!! & #3 is a great question 🫶

☝️ yes, mela & tamlen were involved! they were each other’s best friends, worst puppy crushes, and first time. it was a match the clan really approved of too, and although their elders never deliberately put pressure on them to wed, mel & tamlen still felt it.

but as a couple, they didn’t quite work. tamlen would do anything for melantho. he was too pliable & sweet to keep a pilot flame of attraction lit between them. add in merrill, and now you’re cooking.

having her girl rival on one arm and her boy protector on the other kept mela challenged and interested. it wasn’t a mature, sexual poly relationship yet—they were all too young, and mostly just teased each other with kisses and fell asleep in a pile like kittens, but they might have been if not for the mirror.

marethari did not encourage all three of them bonding. merrill was her First, tamlen was paivel’s favorite student of lore, and melantho was ilen’s apprentice. if the trio were to follow in their mentors’ footsteps as adults, clan sabrae would have a keeper, hahren, and master craftsman that were romantically & sexually bonded, taking each others’ sides against the rest of the clan or turning on each other in the case of marriage troubles… an unpleasant & unstable concentration of power. no, far better to keep ambitious, magical merrill out of it. a future hahren & apprentice craftsman being sweet on each other was not much threat to anybody.

but if merrill had been there when the eluvian was found, maybe the girls could have held tamlen back from touching it—or maybe there just would have been that much more hunger and curiosity in the room, and one more body tainted by the mirror.

✌️ melantho HATES humans. i’ve seen some criticism of clan sabrae, and marethari & ashalle in particular (bc of their close involvement with mahariel but also, if we’re tbh, their being women) for withholding the truth about what happened to mahariel’s parents until they were grown, and i agree that was hurtful & contrived for shock value… but it did make me ask myself what if they’d been right to keep it secret?

so melantho was told, very young, that her parents had run afoul of the shemlen & been killed in a random, common act of human violence, and that wrenched, tore, and twisted at her from when she was a child. it changed the shape of her heart. and while everyone in sabrae has a healthy wariness/resentment of humans, mela’s intensity about it is alarming and out of line. it comes over her like a fever sometimes, killing her lively personality, lighting up her eyes, and making her hiss and spit at anyone who so much as sighs out loud about the clan needing to relocate so much. even her little sister leidy avoids her when she’s in that temper.

tamlen & melantho killed all three men who found the eluvian ruins, and duncan really did need to drag her kicking and screaming to ostagar. she’s mean and impertinent, assuming the worst of every shem she meets there right up to their king. and the night of her joining, before the battle, alistair caught her in the act of poisoning the soldiers’ cookpot with what was left of the darkspawn blood, and had to restrain her from setting loghain’s tent on fire… which he might soon come to regret.

she hasn’t met a dwarf yet, but all she’s heard about them, as inventors of enchanted items & berserker rage, makes them sound very impressive and strange.

✌️☝️ melantho knows magic is dangerous, but had never heard about the chantry’s dogma about it before meeting alistair & the tranquil at ostagar, and it completely takes her aback. she thinks of demons and possessed people like rabid animals—sick predators, something you come across on rare, unlucky occasions in the wilds, something to be mercy killed from a distance if possible but not approached. sure they’re frightening. no need to get idealogical about it. and she associates them with locations haunted by elven tragedies, not with mages.

merrill, leidy, and marethari are mages, and they’re precious to the clan, and to her. even fearmongering about blood magic and darkspawn magisters makes little impression on mel. her mages know what they’re doing, and it’s not the business of an ordinary hunter/crafter to judge their choice of spells. as for blackening the seat of the maker, creating darkspawn, locking each other up in towers and branding each other’s foreheads… well that all just seems like shemlen acting badly.

This. This is a HUGE part of Lucille and Ben’s relationship. Yes, Ben is Lucille’s “Dark Side” in the sense of Carl Jung’s “Shadow,” the vicious side of her that she does not want to associate with because of her guilt from the aftermath. However, she willingly lets him lash out when she’s breaking down, depressed, and wanting to escape from reality at the moment because it’s not her doing the deed, it’s her Shadow.

Now, why would Lucille be on good terms with him? It’s because he’s the one that has been there by her side throughout her life when nobody else was there. He understands her, he indulges and amuses her in her silly interests, he genuinely cares about her wellbeing and helps her in both healthy (like personal hygiene, taking breaks from work, hyping her courage up, etc) and unhealthy (revenge, isolation, judgement, etc) ways.

Why is Ben in this situation? Because he was born/made to be in this position. He does genuinely care about her, but at the same time resents her for this life he lives, for all these wild, almost uncontrollable emotions he carries. It’s all her fault, but the need to be with her because of his origins is so great he’s always internally fighting with himself.

Despite the horrors Lucille and Ben see in each other, they do genuinely get along and would rather be alone together than in the presence of other people who don’t understand them. They hate each other, but love each other just the same.

More Sentence Monday

Using this as an opportunity to give some attention to a snippet from Drie Is Eeen Feestje, a spin off from my Kanej Wensen series with three OC Dregs getting to have a fun night together.

Mikhal & Meril are having a chat with Nico, to see if he's interested...

Mikhal started off directly. “So, Nico… Meril and I might have noticed that you seem to glance longingly at us every time you get the chance.”

Nico’s Kerch complexion lent itself to going especially florid. His eyes, which Meril had noted were brown with hazel flecks at the center, were currently wildly darting between them. “I-I… um… Yeah?”

Oh, this is better than I’d imagined. Something about a man as tall and muscled and aggressive as Nico, reduced to stammering and blushing, thrilled her fiercely. Meril grew braver as the heated feeling grew. “Is that a question, Nico? Because we all know the answer.”

“No… I mean… Y-yes, I’ve been looking, and no, it isn’t a question.” 

She’d seen him be intimidated by Anika. This was different. He was completely flustered, his fingers clenching and unclenching around his whiskey glass. There was scarring over his knuckles from fights, similar to Mikhal’s. She couldn’t help but compare their hands. A visual of the two men with their hands all over each other swept through her mind. It was quickly followed by another; their hands on her, dedicated to her pleasure. Bloody hell. Mikhal seemed enthused at the prospect of getting Nico upstairs, and she was getting more aroused by the minute. Now to see if Nico was on board. Ghezen’s fortune favors the bold…

16 - how does your OC feel about their parents?

Hooo boy what a question, those feelings are COMPLICATED.

Haleth is weird because Nibenaes has very faint, good memories of being very little with her mother, but then she got sent to live with her father and saw her mother very little. Her mother was subsequently always a fairly mythic figure in her head as she never knew her outside of the stories and her own very young memories and the little her father will tell her, and so her grief is complicated and cloying and never fully resolved.

Caranthir is slightly less weird but also quite complicated - he loved her and cared for her but was always busy, so she often got left in the care of other people. Even though, she loved him with few negative feelings until the second kinslaying where she...really starts to understand the sort of thing he was responsible for. But she knew him better and would get to see him again, and so it's a different brand of of complicated and cloying and unresolved lol

20 - a nostalgic memory from your OCs childhood?

She has a memory of quietly sitting in front of the fire with her father; he's doing embroidery over a fix in her clothes, quiet as he always is, and when she sits in front of the fire doing that same mending, she often gets that same feeling rising in her chest.

23 - what are your OCs biggest flaws and biggest strengths?

Biggest flaws: she's impetuous and stubborn, and quick to anger and sometimes acts without thought and is not very good at explaining her thoughts or being in any mood that isn't explicitly positive - all of this led to literally the worst decision she ever made (the Break Up Era™)

Biggest strengths: she is determined and she loves things very easily and she doesn't often let bad things get her down (with a few exceptions), and she has a very strong sense of justice!
