I don't know anything about crypto, so I followed one of the links in that article to understand what a stablecoin supposedly was and oh. my. GOD. It looks like twelve people have just gotten away with an obvious scam by pretending they had 69 billion dollars.

Supposedly, (as I understand it) Tether's thing is that every Tether token is backed by an actual US dollar that they have. You trade in your money for Tether, you can then use Tether to buy other cryptos, but if you change your mind you can hand all you Tether coins back and get your money back exactly.

Except they have released 69 billion Tether coins, and 48 billion of them in the last year. Which, were it a US bank, would make it one of the 50 largest banks in the US.

Nobody in the entire financial world has any idea of how they could possibly have gotten 69 billion dollars.

And who are the geniuses behind Tether? Well:

The chief executive officer listed on Tether’s website, J.L. Van der Velde, is a Dutchman who lives in Hong Kong and seems never to have given an interview or spoken at a conference. The chief financial officer is Giancarlo Devasini, a former plastic surgeon from Italy who was once described on Tether’s website as the founder of a successful electronics business. The only reference to him that turned up in a search of Italian newspapers showed he was once fined for selling counterfeit Microsoft software. He didn’t respond to emails or messages on Telegram, where he goes by Merlinthewizard.

And the founder? Brock Pierce, of The Mighty Ducks. Here he is in all his trustworthy glory.

Alternatively, and something I've seen much more of, is Medieval Arthur (tm) trying to adapt to Modern Times and floundering behind a very Modern Merlin (tm) who speaks weird slang frases, has social media (his TikTok and Tumbler handle are MerlinTheWizard because if he can take the piss out of people, he will), uses magic but also Elecrticity and Plumbing and Technology and Arthur is in a constant state of WTF!

Merlin tries his hardest to keep him out of a facility for the mentally ill.

Merlin somehow ending up back in Camelot straight from the 21st Century, like that scene in The Sword in the Stone.

He speaks weirdly (not language wise, though that we'll have to waive because Old English and Modern English are very, very different) as in using modern slang and references.

He also brought a lot of philosophies from the future, and as such he doesn't really buy into the Kings are incarnations of Divinity (not that he ever did, mind you), but believes in Democracy and the popular vote and free education and health care.

But most importantly: clothes. His sense of style improved and evolved in the thousand years of waiting for Arthur, and he likes to wear skinny jeans, tight shirts, fashionably cut coats and scarfs instead of neckerchief. A few tattoos here, some piercings there and a very modern hairstyle.

He sticks out like a sore thumb, but he's immortal and he knows it so he doesn't really care.
