Hi it's me again. TMA/POKÉMON AU??? YES HELLO PARDON ME I NEED TO THROW MYSELF AT THIS OCCULUS AU YOU'VE GOT GOING ON IF YOU DONT MIND
*BUSTS DOWN THE DOOR* I’M SO GLAD YOU ASKED
I’ve had this AU simmering away for a while and but haven’t posted that much about it, so thank you for the excuse to scream about my extremely self indulgent Pokémon x The Magnus Archives AU
*ahem*
Introducing:
POKÉMON OCULUS
Tumblr media
(Here’s an illustration I did after getting your ask - Champion Jonathan and his ace Pokémon, Vigitera!)
This AU is set in the Ervenis Region, a relatively small island region off the coast of Galar. It closed its borders two years prior to the main storyline, shortly after its Champion went missing during a series of attacks in its major cities and his predecessor was found murdered. Since then, an acting Champion has been instated and the borders have been reopened, but the Champion still has not been found. Most Ervenisans believe he is dead.
However, the Ervenis Champion isn’t as dead as everyone thinks, and his disappearance is only the first in long chain of events that will shake Ervenis to its very core, orchestrated by a man who aims to rule over a ruined world governed by nothing but his own will and the fear of people and Pokémon alike, and who will stop at nothing to bring that goal into reality.
More lore under the cut!
(Some of the AU-specific names and terms might be placeholders in that I haven’t been able to come up with anything better lmao)
(Also some of the art might be a bit old)
General Lore Stuff
Jon is the Champion who went missing, and Gertrude is his murdered predecessor.
Martin is Ervenis’ Pokémon Professor
Martin being the Professor is literally perfect.
Be. Because.
All of the Pokemon Professors (except for the newest ones) are named after trees.
And Martin’s last name is BLACKWOOD. Which is an ACTUAL TREE.
Tumblr media
(My first rough attempt at drawing Jmart in the Pokémon art style)
Also jmart are extremely married
They’re Ervenis’ favorite power couple
(Professor Blackwood for half of the main plot: *sighs.* …I miss my husband. I miss him a lot. I’ll be back.)
Their Pokémon ship name would be Londonfogshipping
Martin has a Galvantula (most likely a regional form), a Sinistea, a Frosslass, and a Togekiss
Jon, in addition to AU-specific Fakemon, has a Gardevoir and a Luxray
Jon also has a shiny Appletun on his team and Martin has a Flapple. Make of that what you will :D
Also yes there are Fakemon in this thing
I have never designed any Fakemon before except for one thirty-minute period of time from when I was ten but I’m not going to let that stop me
Tumblr media
(Initial Fakemon sketches! Three guesses as to which characters get Sqwyrm and Manickregus and the first two don’t count)
(Also Ervenisan Yamask has another form, which evolves into Ervenisan Cofagrigus which is inspired by the Do Not Open coffin)
(I have a whole list of Fakemon designs I want to make but 90% of them aren’t fleshed out at all)
Tim and Sasha are Professors in their own right, and also Martin’s assistants/fellow researchers
Tim has a Houndoom because I saw another TMA Pokémon AU that gave him one and I really liked the idea, he also has a Ludicolo because I lost a debate with my friend who is also into both TMA and Pokémon
Sasha has a Dartrix and a Meowstic
Most of the Avatars are gym leaders
Tumblr media
(Yippee gym leader designs!)
(Not pictured because I ran out of steam before I could draw them: Michael and Helen, who run a double Electric-type gym; Daisy, who runs a Dragon-type gym; Karolina, who runs a Ground-type gym; and Jared, who runs a Normal-type gym)
Elias is the acting Champion in Jon’s absence and the secret leader of Team Chrysalis
The current Elite Four consists of Peter, Simon, Maxwell, and Annabelle
You might have noticed that Jon and the gym leaders are all wearing (mostly) black pendants/brooches
This is part of the Ervenis’ region’s “gimmick:”
Metafestation (which is. Almost definitely a placeholder name)
Skilled trainers can use special items called Metalenses to tap into the psyches of Pokemon and Trainer to manifest the shape of their desires and the power of their emotions in reality.
You basically give the Pokémon a JoJo Stand
Each Metalens must be specially shaped and cut to suit unique trainers and Pokémon, and since using poorly made Metalenses may have disastrous consequences on its users, only a handful of people have the qualifications and legal authorization to do so
(Gerard Keay is one of these people!)
Metalenses are usually worn as pendants or brooches so they’re close to the user’s heart
For the Metafestation power-up to be strongest, the trainer and Pokémon must have a shared goal/desire and a deep bond
(This bond does not have to be a positive one. It just needs to be strong.)
These Metafestations have their own typing system, though no one’s been able to figure out exactly what it is yet.
It’s the Fears. The Fears are the typing system.
Though most users of this system aren’t aware of it, Metafestation comes from achieving a delicate balance of both desire and fear.
When I first came up with this idea, it was JUST Fear, but I felt like that was a bit dark for frickin POKÉMON so I added the desire aspect
After all, what we fear and and what we desire often go hand in hand
You desire safety because you fear its absence, you desire light because you fear the dark, you desire freedom because you fear being confined, etc.
For example, Professor Blackwood desires companionship, and fears being forgotten. Most of the Metafestations he and his Pokémon create are foggy and cold, but in a way soothing at the same time.
Though a small handful of them are spindly and laced with puppet strings and reflect his desire to wield his cunning for good.
(However, he hasn’t been able to properly use his Metalens in years. The first and only time he tried after his husband vanished, it backfired horribly, consuming both him and his Pokémon in a chilling fog and sending them spiraling into unconsciousness. It took weeks for them to recover, and Professor Blackwood bears a physical scar of the incident in the streaks of stark white in his hair.)
Of course, most people don’t have just one desire/fear. The Metalens just channels the strongest ones, and most users don’t achieve more than three separate tertiary types of power-ups.
One of the biggest exceptions is Jon.
He desires many things: Safety, love, knowledge. He also fears many things: Being manipulated and controlled, abandonment, the unknown.
When he was a child, something happened to him that scarred his psyche in such a way that he could channel all of his desires and fears.
It’s what makes him such a potent conduit for the power-up system, and what makes him a prime target for:
Team Chrysalis
Team Chrysalis is a criminal organization/sort of cult disguised as something innocent: The Magnus Institute, the region’s main research institution that Professor Blackwood works at
The AU’s main plot gets kicked off when Professor Blackwood finds evidence that his husband, the missing Champion, is still alive
If this were a real game, the main story on the side of doing the gym challenge would be helping Professor Blackwood look for clues about Jon’s whereabouts and about The Magnus Institute’s hidden goals
Professor Blackwood also figures out that it’s very likely that Elias had a hand in Jon’s disappearance
(Professor Blackwood for the other half of the main plot: *slams down the Do Not Open coffin in front of Elias* It’s a coffin. There’s a name engraved on it. “WHORE!” IT’S EMPTY!! *grabs Elias by the collar* AND YOU’RE GOING IN IT!!!)
The Elite Four are also part of Team Chrysalis and fully on board with its plan
Though Annabelle might have her own machinations going on
Team Chrysalis plans to reshape the world as they see fit by summoning a Legendary Pokémon that’s a warped physical manifestation of the fears and desires of all living creatures, and simultaneously embodies and feeds on those fears and desires
(It’s basically all the Fears mashed into one eldritch monstrosity)
(I’m mildly worried this sounds too similar to some existing legendaries but at the same time I’m just spitballing and having fun here)
To summon this Legendary, they need a lynchpin capable of channeling all of those fears and desires
This lynchpin is Jon because of course it is.
Team Chrysalis’ whole plan actually only serves to grant Elias immortality and make him king of a ruined world but shhh none of the team members know that
I have zero idea what the Legendary would look like, I just have the fact I want it to have “Pan” in its name
The climax of the story comes when Team Chrysalis starts their ritual and the end of the world. In order to stop them, their Vessel and the Legendary must be defeated.
Tumblr media
You are challenged by The Archivist!
The Really Self Indulgent Part
I started working on this at the same time that my friend was watching through XY for the first time
So at some point when coming up with all of the story stuff my brain went “what if I stuck Ash Ketchum into the story?”
So Ash is there now. For some reason lol
Tumblr media
He’s 19 now and is just doing his thing and traveling the world
As usual, he takes on the player’s role, challenging gyms and helping Professor Blackwood in his investigation and eventually helping him take on Team Chrysalis
(I made this shitpost in like. Less than an hour lmao)
Ash is so done with these evil team leaders trying to destroy the world
Greninja is also there because tHIS IS MY AU AND I DO WHAT I WANT *MANIACAL LAUGHTER*
And I think that’s it for an overview of Pokémon Oculus!
I have a bunch more stuff for this AU, mostly spitballs and WIP writing snippets, and I do plan on making more art and Fakemon designs eventually (especially now that I’m getting better at emulating the Pokémon art style)
Thank you for reading this far, and feel free to ask me anything about this AU! :D

He’s in love...with humanity
I was curious and decided to look up what people thought about 9x22, and the “he’s in love...with humanity” line with the benefit of hindsight. I saw a fair few comments that basically amounted to, “but why can’t it just mean that Cas is in love with humanity?” I honestly can’t believe that this is an argument we’re still having. I understand people who say that Dean only has platonic/brotherly feelings for Cas. I don’t agree with them, but I can see how they would come to this conclusion. I can also understand when people say Metatron was a villain, and his words aren’t the exact truth. Again I don’t agree with it, particularly given the events of 9x23, but I get it.
What I truly cannot get my head around is the idea that, Metatron’s words literally mean, Cas is in love with humanity at large.
Naomi didn’t make him kill thousands of humans to brainwash him into heaven’s weapon, she made him kill thousands of copies of Dean.
It wasn’t humanity that knelt before him, gripping his hand and broke the connection Naomi had with him, by telling him how important and needed he was by humanity in general. It was Dean, and how much he was needed by Dean that did that.
When Cain revealed his plans for culling 1/10 of the human race, Cas was horrified but he tried to talk to him, make him see reason. But the second Cain mentioned Dean:
Tumblr media
Cas drew his weapon, prepared to fight. A gesture that did not go unnoticed by Cain, and what lead him to “suspect” what Castiel was to Dean, if ascribing him the Colette role in his prophecy to Dean is any indication.
If it’s humanity that Cas is so in love with, why would he be willing to stand back and watch Dean “murder the world” rather than bring himself to hurt him?
Ishim didn’t refer to humanity in general as Cas’ “human weakness”. He knew that his own human weakness was one individual in particular, Lily, the woman he was in love with. It’s why he recognised that Cas’ human weakness was also one individual in particular, Dean, the man he is in  ______ with?
In 14x01 Jack proposed that to defeat Michael, they needed to be prepared to kill Dean as well. Michael was a deadly threat to all of humanity and Jack recognised that he needed to be stopped at any cost. And of course Cas, who’s so in love with humanity, was completely on board with sacrificing one man for the sake of the human race in general right? Hmmm.
And then we circle back to the context of the line in question in relation to the episode it was in, 9x22. Metatron addresses the angels that are following Cas. He reveals some of the unsavoury things that Cas has done in order to turn them against him. And yet, there is only one thing Hannah asks of Cas: to punish Dean Winchester. Not Sam and Dean, not any other human, just Dean. Of course he refuses. He gives up an army for one guy and Metatron says those words:
“And then after a rousing speech, his true weakness is revealed. He’s in love...with humanity”.
There was no mention of ‘’humanity’’ or any other human after Metatron’s video call to Cas’ angel headquarters. There was no moment where Cas’ love for humanity was what caused the angels to turn against him. It was his love for Dean, it’s always his love for Dean. The action of giving up his army for Dean could have been construed as gesture based purely on platonic love, but it was the show itself that said he did this because he was ‘’in love’’.
Cas revealed his feelings for humanity in 4x07:
Tumblr media
He loves and admires humanity, like one would admire a work of art.
But Dean on the other hand:
Tumblr media
(obligatory singular plural)
Tumblr media
There are many things about Destiel the show has fostered a sense of ambiguity around, but the notion that for Cas, it is always Dean above all else? That, has never been in question. After all Metatron said it best in 9x23:
And the Angel tablet, arguably the most powerful instrument in the history of the universe, is in pieces, and for what again? Oh, that's right: to save Dean Winchester. That was your goal, right?
Tumblr media
Does Cas look like he disagrees?

Can I touch you?
The DESTIEL longing
So we were discussing something very very beautiful but very angsty at the same time.
This are just facts we noticed as team, @emblue-sparks @mrsaquaman187 and @cheerstofandomfamily and we want to share with you. Enjoy!
CAS invading for the first time Dean's personal space.
Remember First Encounter... When Dean asked "And why would an angel rescue me from Hell?"
And then Castiel proceed to say...
"Good things...
Tumblr media
Gif credit @magnificent-winged-beast who pointed this too in her meta about the first encounter, she talked about this "entering into Dean', personal space" for the first time.
Is such an intense scene but full of Intrigue coming from Castiel. He was so intrigued with this human. He saw a broken man.
We had a lot of situations about Castiel invading Dean's personal space that we can recall in all season 4 and firsts episodes from.season 5 till... This happened...
Dean teaches CAS about personal space
Tumblr media
And @mrsaquaman187 said here: "Dean is retreating this phrase so much" and is hilarious but with a side of truth...
Since then... We saw Castiel being so respectful about personal space with Dean, we noticed even when he needs to heal Dean he do that with such a delicate and tenderness touch, approaching his fingers or his hand to Dean's body so slowly... As if he was asking for permission... And we have this beautiful moments...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There... So intense, and delicate at the same time...
So yeah... He understood... But Dean is now the person who's hungrily searching for Castiel, and that's why we are having the following moments now...
Dean reaching for Cas physical contact
We believe there was a change in Dean's character since Purgatory. As I said like a thousand of times, Dean discovered in Purgatory that he was feeling something else than just platonic friendship for Cas.
So, after teaching Cas about personal space, now is Dean who is gravitating around the angel... Trying to remain cool with bro slaps, or bro touching, but sometimes... The touching are not so brodly...
Tumblr media
Gif credit @bennylafitte
Tumblr media
Gif credit @rosewhipped22
And he is always searching to be side by side, almost glued to the angel...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's 👆 so blantant coming from Dean. Is Dean who's looking for this contact... But why?
I said before, is because we wants to approach Cas in a different way... He is slowly trying to catch Cas's permission before this kind of touches. Bc Cas is his best friend, and he is trying to do this in the right way... Slowly...
This is such a sweet thought and we wanted to share with you....

Feasts of Affection
Metafest: Castiel, Angel of the Lord
Castiel’s unasked for and undrunk bottle of beer was a feature in season 13-- a D or even E plot of its own if you will. Even beverages that Cas is known to consume were pointedly avoided over the last two seasons-- in 13x06 (Tombstone) it’s implied that Castiel makes the coffee that Dean is seen drinking later, but he does not drink any himself.
Tumblr media
We’ve known Cas to drink coffee before…
Tumblr media
And even the hard stuff…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we’ve been told that doing this-- sharing in this feast of affection-- would be good for Castiel, as evinced in 13x13 (Funeralia)when Dean and Cas are in the bunker kitchen. Dean pours himself a cup of coffee. He and Cas are brainstorming ways they might track down Gabriel to “hijack his grace” in order to reopen the Rift. Dean decides to grease the wheels and gets a beer for himself and one for Castiel-- even though Cas declines, the minute Dean opens the refrigerator and gets him one anyway, Cas finally has an idea. It is this moment when Dean involves the “family” beer, Margikugels, that he and Cas are able to work together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Granted, Cas’ idea was bad, but then, he didn’t drink the beer.)
So even though Castiel has a seat at the table, so to speak…
Tumblr media
... Sam has picked up on the way Cas is setting himself apart when the unopened beer (and now an uneaten pizza) again shows up in 13x21 (Beat the Devil.) Even in what was revealed to be Sam’s dream sequence Cas is not partaking in the shared meal.
This abstinence is meant to be noticed. It’s borderline rude.
Compare Cas’ aloofness then to 14x8 (Byzantium,) where Castiel not only drinks alongside Dean and Sam during Jack’s wake, he at one point brings a couple of bottles to the table.
Tumblr media
In the next episode, he sits and eats “Krunch Cookie Crunch”, with Jack, putting aside his own dislike of “molecules” to partake in a late-night meal with his adopted son.
Tumblr media
Cas over these three seasons, starting with his rescue of Kelly Kline from his own friends when he tentatively positioned himself as Jack’s guardian up to Byzantium where he (mirrored by Lily Sunder) fully accepted his role as Jack’s surrogate father, has finally integrated himself into this human family, and it wasn’t textualized by anyone calling him brother or dad, but by the primal act of sharing a glass and a meal with the people he loves, like a thanksgiving, or an agapefeast or lovefeast in the Christian church. It’s no accident that the scene where he told Jack that he loved him and then took his place to save him from the Empty happened in a kitchen.
Tumblr media
Two times-- in Sam’s dream and then with the coffee in Tombstone-- Cas offers food but does not share it. LIkewise, Dean calls Cas his brother, but it is not until that exchange in Funeralia that Cas begins to believe it.
It took me a few episodes (and honestly all of season 13) to finally “get” what is going on in the Dabb era, to realize that things we think are being forgotten or retconned are instead choices and indicate growth in the super-poetic storytelling the writers are crafting this season. With that in mind, it’s been really wonderful to watch Cas blossom this year. I like seeing him getting closer to humanity through food sharing, as though he’s letting himself relax from a tension he hardly knew he was carrying, but that we were meant to spot throughout these last two seasons. It is a kind of reversal or subversion or mirror-image of the Aarne-Thompson motif C211.1-- “eating in fairyland”-- wherein a mortal eats food or drinks from a cup offered by fairy-folk and has to remain there forever. Cas has gone from refusing to eat even in someone else’s dream to sharing clandestine candy cereal at night with his son, and he is deciding to stay. It is striking in a season where things a character says turns out to be Very Important that in Castiel’s case, his vital development is coming in scenes where we are being shown and not told.

SPN Freethinking-- The Brothers Campbell
Something I thought was really cool in 14x13 was finding out that in Lebanon, Sam and Dean use the surname Campbell. Now obviously, there's probably a very good practical reason for it. Considering the criminal records these guys have under the name Winchester, it makes sense they wouldn't use Winchester. An alias would be the best course of action and the most believable cover stories always include a grain of truth to them.
But I also like to speculate on it from a thematic level. There is so much power in a name. So much of how we define ourselves is placed in our name, which is the foundation of our very being. Consider, if you will, the reason why Dean uses music as a source for his aliases. He associates the music as a sense of who he is.
The Winchester name is indicative of their father, someone they still carry emotional baggage with and until that emotional baggage is dealt with, they can't truly accept that name as part of them in a town that has always symbolized a sense of "home" for them. John Winchester was never "home" for them. And until those issues are resolved, Winchester will never give them that feeling of "home". However, them using the surname Campbell is indicative, thematically at least, of them having worked through their issues with Mary. Because they've worked through the baggage, they feel as if they can accept that name as a part of them and being able to accept that name gives them a sense of "self" in a place they associate as "home". It's also interesting using the name Campbell in the town where the bunker is located when the bunker is actually attached to the Winchester side of their legacy.
And I reay like that the Campbell name in regards to how they introduce themselves to the Lebanon townsfolk is revealed in a episode where they're dealing with the emotional baggage that comes with the Winchester side of them.
Just a thought I had. I would love to hear if anyone else has thoughts on this. Also, tagging my friends @metafest if they want to weigh into this.

Has anyone done an SPN meta on the Colt/Chuck’s gun from 14X20? Like, in my pre-caffeinated state:
Both are weapons with serious catches, i.e. the Colt’s limited ammo/inability to kill Lucifer, and the S14 God Gun killing the target and its user. The connection of both guns to Lucifer and his offspring, and the fact that Cas even tried to use the Colt to kill Kelly and an unborn Jack.
In fact, why haven’t I seen posts about the parallels between Cas and Dean and their decision to kill, and then spare, Jack?
Or, am I just not paying attention and people have totally been talking about these things, but I’ve been too busy lately to notice?
@metafest ? Maybe? @evvvissticante @verobatto-angelxhunter

The Riddle of the Sphinx: 14x12 Prophet and Loss
First, thanks to @verobatto-angelxhunter  @gneisscastiel @magnificent-winged-beast @emblue-sparks  @mrsaquaman187  for inviting me to guest this week, as part of their ongoing SPN #Metafest project @metafest
along with several other guests:  @bluephoenixrises  @poorreputation @agusvedder @amwritingmeta   @savannadarkbaby @prairiedust  and
@norahastuff
I’m going to guest meta about the Riddle of the Sphinx.
Tumblr media
Here is creepy Tony Alvarez drowning his first victim.
Despite an opening dose of Bucklemming torture-porn (ugh - although tbf there was a narrative point, as the drowned girl was a mirror for Dean, just like the slain first-born son and the dude who almost got barbecued were - more on that later...)... So, yeah, despite that, I was thrilled to see this in the visual narrative architecture - the Sphinx Machine Shop, where Tony does his mangled prophecy induced killing.
Tumblr media
The Sphinx, as you know, is a fearsome part-woman, part winged-lion beastie, in Greek mythology, who was famous for guarding the entrance to Thebes and asking travellers to solve the answer to a riddle in order to gain safe passage to the city. If they failed, she devoured them.
She is tied in mythology not just to puzzles and their solutions, but to fate...
Here is the Sphynx of Naxos, from the Temple of Apollo at Delphi (560 BCE)
Tumblr media
Image from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sphinx_of_Naxos
The Temple of Delphi was the site of the Oracle of Delphi, who was the High Priestess Pythia (a transferrable role) famous for her prophesies, which came to her in trance-states, supposedly from the God Apollo.
You see the link to SPN’s own Prophet role here....
The Sphinx also, famously, appears in Sophocles’ play Oedipus Rex, which became the basis for Freud’s also famous (and relevant a bit later) “Oedipus complex”. Sophocles didn’t invent the myth, but his telling is its most famous rendition.
Despite his other misfortunes, Oedipus doesn’t get devoured by the Sphinx, because he solves her riddle, a popular rendition of which is:
“What goes on four legs, on two legs, on three, and the more legs it goes on, the weaker it be?”
The answer, is - a human (baby, adult, old person with a stick).
Oedipus’ story is a classic story about fate, just like Appointment in Samara (re-worked in an SPN episode, 6x11, but originally an old Mesopotamian tale) which @mittensmorgul  and I were talking about just recently, in relation to themes of fate vs free will in SPN (specifically in relation to the role played by Death - see here for the discussion:
http://drsilverfish.tumblr.com/post/182454009599/mittensmorgul-drsilverfish-mittensmorgul  )
Oedipus’ story is a (f-d up) family drama - rather relevant to our very own Family Winchester [no, NOT because this is all about either of the boys wanting to sleep with Mary Winchester - thanks Dr. Freud - although, come to think of it, Dean did say she was hot in 4x03 In The Beginning :-)]
Tumblr media
14x13 Lebanon promo shot
When baby Oedipus is born, his father King Laius receives a prophecy that his son will grow up to kill him, and so, he sends a shepherd to expose the baby on the mountainside to die, before that can happen. The shepherd however, not being an asshole, saves the baby, and raises him secretly as his own.
Oedipus grows up, and he eventually learns from the Oracle at Delphi herself (see above) that he is fated to kill his father and marry his mother. Believing the shepherd and his wife are his true mother and father, whom he loves, he leaves his home in the mountains for the city of Thebes, determined to defy the prophecy.
On the way, he meets a quarrelsome old man on the road, they fight, and Oedipus kills him:
When he gets to Thebes, he finds the King has been slain, by persons unknown, and the town is at the mercy of the Sphinx. Oedipus, by guessing the Sphinx’s riddle, obtains safety for the town and is, in gratitude, appointed King himself and given the widowed Queen, Jocasta’s, hand in marriage.
All is well for a bit, until a plague descends on Thebes, and Oedipus is told that to save the city, he must avenge King Laius’ death. So, he goes sleuthing, with the extremely relucant help of his seer Tiresius, and to his horror, discovers that he is the one who killed the King (that old dude on the road to Thebes all those years ago), that he is the King’s true son, and has, therefore, killed his father and, in marrying Queen Jocasta, married his mother and committed incest, fulfilling the prophecy he set out to escape from. He promptly blinds himself in horror. Poor ancient Greek dude.
The Chorus laments the power of fate
O heavy hand of fate!          Who now more desolate, Whose tale more sad than thine, whose lot more dire?          O Oedipus, discrowned head,          Thy cradle was thy marriage bed;
http://www.gutenberg.org/files/31/31-h/31-h.htm  - Project Gutenberg translation of Oedipus Rex.
A reference to the story of Oedipus and the Sphinx is extremely pregnant right now in the SPN narrative, for two reasons:
1) Fate vs Free Will
2) The Ghost of John Winchester
1) Fate vs Free Will
Dean thinks his interpretation of the book Billie handed him in 14x10 Nihilism - apparently the only death of his in which AU!Michael doesn’t take over his meat-suit and burn the world - means he has to sink himself to the bottom of the ocean, in the Ma’lak (angel) box and that’s “fate”.
Tumblr media
Like Oedipus, there is no escape.
However, 14x12 tells us two things. Firstly, by analogy - the prophecy is wrong. Alvarez thinks he is carrying out the prophetic Word of God TM by recreating a twisted version of the Plagues of Egypt sent by God in Exodus:
1) The slaughter of a first-born son
2) Drowning in the Red Sea
3) Fire out of Heaven
(all of which are mirrors for what Dean thinks is his “fate” right now: death of a first born son; being drowned forever at the bottom of the ocean in the Ma’lak box; being consumed by the AU Archangel Michael’s Heavenly grace/fire).
Tumblr media
But it’s a garbled message, received as a result of Prophet Donatello’s comatose scramblings.
Secondly, screw prophecy - against the odds, Dr. Sexy of the Lord (yeah - you know Dean thought it) is able to revive Donatello, thus preventing further scramblings (aka wrong prophesies).
CASTIEL: “Dean - if there is a spark, a hope, then I have to try.... you taught me that!”
Tumblr media
I loved that line, with its resonance all the way back, like a skein of blue grace, to the Apocalypse Mark One, when Dean convinced Castiel, in Zacharia’s (also due to return in 14x13 Lebanon) “green room” in 4x22 Lucifer Rising, to disobey Heaven for the sake of humanity (Yes, Dean, an angel did fall for you...).
Tumblr media
In other words, just as the Winchesters beat their “fate” to be “angel condoms” for Michael and Lucifer last time around, by “tearing up the script” and “making it up as they go” (4x22 Lucifer Rising) thanks to the help of rebel angel Castiel, so they can do so again.
2) The Ghost of John Winchester
In the SPN world’s worst kept spoiler, we know John will return next week in 14x13 Lebanon. We’ve been meta’ing about the ghost of John Winchester haunting the SPN narrative for... forever.
Here is some meta of mine on the subject from S12:
http://drsilverfish.tumblr.com/post/158388550099/john-winchesters-ghost-and-the-haunting-of-s12
John is explicitly recalled, during the brothers’ (beautifully rendered) car conversation in 14x12:
Tumblr media
DEAN: “You ever think about when we were kids?”
SAM: “Maybe, yeah, sure, sometimes, why?”
DEAN: “I know I wasn’t always the greatest brother to you.”
SAM: “Dean, you were the one who was always there for me. The only one. I mean, you practically raised me.”
DEAN: “I know things got dicey, you know with Dad, the way he was... and I just.... I didn’t always look out for you the way that I should of. I mean, I had my own stuff, y’know, and in order to keep the peace, it probably looked like I took his side quite a bit. Sometimes, when I was away, you know it wasn’t cos I just ran out, right? Dad would, he would send me away, when I really pissed him off. I think you knew that.”
SAM: “Man I left that behind a long time ago, I had to.”
AU!Michael, I’ve been arguing since the start of the season, is a mirror for Dean’s self-repression and for John Winchester. See:
http://drsilverfish.tumblr.com/post/179463975289/shirtlesssammy-14x03the-scar-meta-writers
John was one of the major causes of Dean’s self-repression, as illustrated in the convo above, where it’s clear Dean had to grow up too fast to become a substitute-parent to Sam, where he was often obedient to their father to “keep the peace”, and where he was also often, unreasonably, punished by his father in the process (such as, as we already know, when he was sent to Sonny’s after stealing food for Sam in 9x07 Bad Boys).
According to psychoanalysis, we always internalise psychological constructs of our parents - Freud calls them imagos. So the Riddle of the Sphinx, for Dean, is how to kill (or rather, lay to rest) the ghost of his father (whom AU! Michael is a mirror for) and with it, the self-repression which has wounded him so much, psychically, since childhood, without letting it kill him too.
Nick, of course (general shudder) also serves as a John Winchester mirror in the episode - his obsessive revenge quest for the slaughter of his wife (aka mirror Mary Winchester) by Abraxas, led to something she never wanted - damage to innocents along the way (aka mirror innocents, Sam and Dean).
To Conclude
The answer to the Sphinx’s riddle, the one that helped Oedipus avoid being devoured by her was.... humanity.
Tumblr media
Light Sphinx, 2015-2016, Mixed media (inc. foam, hand stitched fabrics, LEDs, beads, synthetic hair), 74 x 32 x 54 cm by Tarryn Gill
https://tarryngill.com/Light-Sphinx-Shadow-Sphinx-2015-16
Dean IS the symbolic representation of humanity (which is why Amara was so fascinated by him, and let’s not forget Metatron’s words about Castiel in 9x22 Stairway to Heaven  - “He’s in love with.... humanity”).
Our first-born Winchester son just has to believe what this episode showed him -  prophecy can be wrong.
His “fate” - to die, to drown forever, to be consumed by holy grace/fire, to remain trapped by the ghost of his father, by his own self-repression, by AU!Michael, by the Ma’lak box (aka, in subtext, the closet) is NOT the “Word of God”.
And killing one’s father doesn’t (as it did for Oedipus) have to mean damnation, if, the way one does it, is symbolically, by laying his ghost to rest in one’s heart and mind (hello upcoming SPN 300 14x13 Lebanon).
Freud believed the resolution of the Oedipus complex (for boys) was identification with the father (and no, we don’t have to concur with Dr. Freud). Dean has actually been on an oppositve journey, to get out from under his father’s shadow.
The Jungian solution, which the S14 narrative is offering to the metaphorical Riddle of the Sphinx, is, to turn around and embrace the Shadow-self (the parts of oneself one has repressed) and in so doing, to evolve - to become more fully human.
So, a final salute to Jerry Wanek and team, and the ever wonderful SPN set dressing narrative, for The Sphinx Machine shop!

Nihilism and the profound bond
Sometimes there's just iconic moments in shows that you can never forget no matter how hard you try. Supernatural has had many of those sorts of moments for me, and this one has been in my mind recently, due to an upcoming episode: 14x10 Nihilism, and that moment is this..
Dean Winchester, after the loss of his angel, Castiel at the end of season 12.
For 5 episodes we watch him emotionally self destruct, and mourn as one would after the loss of someone who was so central in their life, that they lose the will to live. Sometimes they'll just try to survive each day, not really living, but still alive. Dean didn't even want that anymore, he's willing to die. He WANTS to die.
Tumblr media
Yes, I know, these scenes of grieving Dean have been discussed over and over again, because there was no way the writers were trying to show us anything but that!
But I'd like to discuss the 5 well known stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance
Denial. Dean didn't believe his angel was gone for good. He prayed to God to bring him back.
Anger. He looked for Cas to appear beside him, and moved on to anger when he realized that wasn't happening.
Tumblr media
Bargaining doesn't happen quite the same way we might expect. He approaches Jack, and tells him that if he goes dark side, he'll kill him. Yeah it's supposed to sound like "if you become a monster, I'll kill you because that's what I do" but to me.. (insert me crying a little because I love the change between them that happened and now Dean loves Jack so much) ... to me this sounded like "you killed Cas, it's your fault he's dead, if you give me a reason to do it, I'll get my revenge for that".
Depression. For the sake of a case... Dean willingly dies. He meets with Billie, and gets asked a question, which she later answers...
Tumblr media
Last stage: acceptance. I have to throw this into the depression stage as well.. Dean accepts Cas is dead. Dean is ready to die, because he's lost the will to live. Billie recognizes it.. and in answer to the "what do you want" she says for him "so you want to die" (see the beginning of this post)
And that brings us to 14x10 "Nihilism" - a life without meaning, lack of a reason to live, feeling like reality isn't even real.
Let's just draw a few parallels first:
Cas went to the empty, and had to try to regain his life and to be let go, so he was. Dean was possessed by Michael and "wouldn't stop squirming to get out, to get back" so Michael let him go.
After being released from these situations, they are both taken again soon after. Cas gets kidnapped by Asmodeus, Dean gets repossessed by Michael, but buried more deeply within his mind.
While Cas is in the empty, his mind is read by the entity in charge of the empty, to try to understand how he woke up. While Cas is imprisoned next, Asmodeus pretends to be him and uses him as a way to gather information. When Dean is released after the first time Michael possesses him, Michael uses the "link" formed by possession to spy through Dean, and gain information for things yet to be made fully known.
Both Asmodeus and Michael have taken an interest in Jack's powers and abilities, Michael hasn't taken advantage of them... yet... because they've been low.
Where am I going with this? Isn't it obvious?
Dean and Cas' stories have been connected and paralleled for years, this instance is just the most recent one. The same emotional ups and downs, the same search for purpose, for family, for understanding. Their lives are tied together, bound for the same destiny.. profoundly bonded forever.
The reason I brought up those parallels is because I believe they'll be very relevant now. They chose "Nihilism" as a title for a reason, and the title by itself is another parallel to Dean's emotional well being after Cas died, so I'm wondering... who's losing the will to live? Or is it just that Sam and Cas are going to have to find a way to restore Dean's "will to live" to help him wake up from the most recent possession? We know Dean is struggling in 14x12 based on something Jensen said in a panel recently, and I'm reminded of Dean and Cas' conversation when we saw Raphael's first vessel on the show, I believe in 5x03, in an unresponsive state.
"So is this what I'm looking at when Michael jumps my bones?"
"No, not at all. Michael is much more powerful. It'll be far worse for you."
So let's discuss! What do you think?

Power Trio
Tumblr media
Tv Shows often revolve around three characters. Even some movies and books revolve around three characters such as Star Wars and Harry Potter. These trios are often characterized by two so-called extremes and a medium. The two extremes are often in conflict with one another with the medium acting as a mediator. A great example of this is Kirk, Spock, and McCoy from Star Trek. With Spock and McCoy acting as extremes and Kirk acting as the mediator. Star Trek is so iconic with this trope that the parts of a power trio are often referred to as The Kirk, The Spock, and The McCoy. The Kirk is the mediator. The Spock is the often who looks at the bigger picture relying on logic rather than emotions. “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one.”  The counterpart to The Spock is The McCoy who is more emotional and humanistic. The McCoy cares more about making the right choice than making the logical one.
Tumblr media
Another example of a power trio is Harry, Hermione, and Ron. With Harry being “The Kirk”, Hermoine being “The Spock”, and Ron being “The McCoy.” If you are completely lost because you have never watched Star Trek (STOP reading and go watch it! What have you been doing with your life? How can you be reading about tv tropes without watching the basis for most of those tropes?) Another way to think about this is through Freud’s Id, Superego, and Ego theory. In fact, these Power Trios are often referred to as Freudian Trios.
the Id, which represented emotional and instinctual desires; (The McCoy)
the Superego, which represented the logical and intellectual reasoning; (The Spock)
the Ego, which reconciled the Id and Superego. (The Kirk)
Tumblr media
So how does this all apply to our favorite Supernatural trio? I would say that The Kirk or The Ego is Dean. This is generally the leader of the group. Although this is clearly not always the case Dean is the older brother. The McCoy or The ID is Sam. Sam is a good fit here because I believe he is one of the more emotional of the bunch. Most of his decisions are made based on feelings. He wants to do the right thing. This is different from Dean because where Dean wants to save people in general, Sam cares more about making things right. Our Spock, of course, is Castiel and not just because Cas often lacks a deeper understanding of emotions. He makes very Spock-like decisions often putting the bigger picture above others and especially his own safety. One of the many examples of Cas doing this is in 12x23 when Cas breaks with the original plan and goes after Lucifer on his own. This is sort of action is known by the very famous Spock line “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one.”
Tumblr media
So Team Free Will is a classic example of a power trio. I have another theory about these trios though. All trios are made up of a medium and two extremes but I believe that this doesn’t just apply to their character. I think it also applies to what they are in-universe as well. Let's look at our two examples first. In Star Trek, we have a trio made up of Kirk, Spock, and Mc Coy. Kirk is a human who wants to explore space. He is our medium. So naturally, the two extremes of that are a human who very much doesn’t want to be in space, McCoy, and a Vulcan who essentially is space. A being from space was critical to round out that trio. Let's look at another example of the golden trio from Harry Potter. We have Harry, our medium, who is a wizard raised by muggles, and our two extremes Ron a wizard raised by wizards and Hermione who until she received her letter was completely outside of the wizarding world. Do you see how it is again a medium and two extremes? Even appling to what they are?
Tumblr media
In Supernatural, it is very similar to Kirk, Spock, and McCoy because we have Dean who wants to be a hunter like Kirk wants to explore space, Sam who longs to have a normal life like McCoy doesn’t particularly care for Space and then we have Cas who is the Supernatural.
Tumblr media
I point this out because I think have an extreme like Spock being a Vulcan or Cas being an angel rounds out our trio nicely. I don’t think it would work any other way.
Tumblr media
Now some may argue that I have forgotten someone in my rant about trios. But I don't think I have. You see Power Trios can still exist within a larger ensemble so the addition of Jack (or the lack of Crowley for that matter) doesn’t change the fact the Dean, Sam, and Cas are a Power Trio.

WHILE I REMEMBER. WHAT OF GERRY KEAY. MY SON MY BESTIE MY SPECIALEST LITTLE BASTARD LIGHT OF MY ACTUAL LIFE GERARD KEAY. What becomes of him in this AU? I know that he's qualified to make these lenses but not much else. Is he alive? Is he a ghost? Are he and Michael smooching? Also does this AU include Gertrude? Maybe she was doing some questionable experiments with metafestations which she roped him and Michael into and Jon (and/or Martin and Ash/the player) stumble upon them during their search for Jon.
Actually I think either Gerry and/or Oliver should have a Greavard. It's Puppy and Spooky and also Greavard looks like Gerard if you squint very hard. Also, therapy dog which jesus christ he absolutely needs.
Tumblr media
Gerry is very much alive! On top of being a Metalens Craftsman, he’s also an Elite Four member who specializes in Ghost Types!
(At least, he was - then Jon went missing and Elias insisted on replacing the entire Elite Four because “An Elite Four that allows their Champion to disappear in a time of crisis is one that I, much less the people of Ervenis, can depend on or trust.”)
Gerry is also a well known artist who works in the Ervenis capital so he can keep an eye on Elias and takes regular glasswork commissions! He has an Alolan Marowak, who was a gift from Eric, who helps him out with it :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Also the doggo is canon now)
(Also also I’m not super into Doorkeay but I’m not NOT into it so Gerry and Michael could definitely be smoochin!)
A bit more Metalens lore! Ervenis is so rich in the kind of minerals and sand needed to make Metaglass, which is what Metalenses are made of, that it’s often used in regular glasswork. The more volatile properties of Metaglass can be neutralized by mixing it with regular glass, and glassware made with this new diluted kind of glass is highly desired for its unique opalescent coloring.
However, even though he’s so experienced with it, Gerry absolutely refuses to use any Metaglass in his glasswork pieces, even though his clients have insisted countless times that it’s perfectly safe.
As for Gertrude…
She was the Champion before Jon, capable of manifesting a whopping five types of Metafestation. She was known to have an odd fascination with Metafestation and its origins, which is how she met Gerry. She funded her own research team dedicated to Metafestation research, which is how she met Martin, and sometimes even offered herself and her team as test subjects.
She knew of Jon long before he challenged her for her title - rumors of a young Trainer somehow capable of channeling every known kind of Metafestation was something that drew her attention almost immediately.
Shortly after Jon’s victory against her, Gertrude convinced Jon to allow her to study him and his ability, which is how he met Martin.
About two weeks before the attacks that would lead to Jon going missing, Gertrude had accompanied her old friend Adelard on a trip to some ancient ruins recently unearthed by an earthquake.
A day after the attacks, when people were cleaning up the damage from the attack on the Magnus Institute, Gertrude’s body was found buried in the rubble.

Moves borne of desperation
Something that’s very clear this season, is how closely Cas and Dean’s arcs are paralleling each other. They’ve both sacrificed themselves to the whims of a powerful cosmic being to save someone they see as their son. Dean said yes to Michael to save Sam and Jack. Cas agreed to the terms laid out by the entity from the Empty in order to save Jack. They’ve both agreed to spend eternity locked up with their respective Big Bads, to stop them from hurting the people they love.
This isn’t something new, it’s been happening since Cas first appeared in season 4 and they bonded over just being instruments, subject to the orders of their fathers. It’s why they’ve always understood each other so well, and connected on such an intense level. Not only is Cas in a similar situation to Dean right now, he has been many times in the past.
Saying yes to Lucifer, killing Billie to break the deal the WInchester’s made with her and secretly working with heaven to kill Jack before he was born, were all desperate sacrificial moves that Cas made from a very similar mindset to the one Dean is in right now. That’s not even mentioning the very first deal Cas made from desperation, the most heartbreaking one: his deal with Crowley in season 6 to get all the souls from purgatory. Cas has never forgotten the consequences of that. In fact what was it he said to Hannah in 10x02 when she tried to make a deal with Metatron to get Cas’ grace back?
Tumblr media
Any parallels to what he said to Dean in 14x12?
Tumblr media
And that I believe is the key ingredient for a plan destined to fail on Spn. These desperate decisions that are made without consulting the rest of your family? They will not succeed. When you decide that you alone can face the danger, when it’s only your own life you’re willing to sacrifice and you jump on the first grenade you can find, you’re not going to win.
The thing is Dean had already figured all this out. Like he told Cas in 12x19:
We will find a better way (...) you, me and Sam, we’re just better together.
But it’s easier to give this advice than it is to take it when you’re the one in a desperate situation. This episode was again a little frustrating in “just communicate you dumbasses!” arena, but given what we know about the very similar sacrifice Cas has made, it’ll be very interesting to see if there will be a reversal in where they both stand come the end of the season.
Sidenote: There’s also the small matter that even though desperation is most likely going to lead to failure, feeling the opposite of that is fatal for Cas. The writer’s have set up an interesting situation and I’m very much looking forward to where it goes.
These are mostly half baked sleep deprived thoughts, but if anyone has anything to add I’d love to hear it :)

Note
Okay so i just thought of this. This probably sounds dumb, so hear me out. Cas will only be put in the empty when he’s truly happy, right. But thats only if he’s an angel?!? If he is a human in the end wouldn’t that mean happily ever after with dean?!!
Hello!
We will tag our mods for answer your question.
Thanks you!

What's happening to Jack before he kills Mary? As Dean said "only snake's bite is dangerous'', not the snake, in this analogy is it clear that someone is using Jack's bite and taking advantage of his absence of soul or inability to manage his powers to hurt "someone's family"... Mary death is a Michael's plan, even if he's dead, or he isn't? (don't forget Michael's grace inside Jack or other possibilities to control him).
The point is: Micheal has made "dozen" of traps waiting for Dean and his family and honestly what writers kill the main villain before the end of the season? So, who is the next prey?

Dabb's era and the Quantum theory
Hand to Hand
Hello my dear Fandom! Here I am in this hiatus, just rewatching season 12 and 13... And noticing a couple of interesting things about HANDS IN DABB'S TEAM NARRATIVE.
We had talked about hands and foreshadow before, this time I want to add a little of science...
Let's start...
Past-present and future: at the same time
Einstein described the time not as a continuous line, but as parallel planes containing our past, present and future happening at the same time. (Quantum theory basis).
So, what this got to do with Dabb's narrative? We had seen before how writers used gestures with hands as clues for what is about to coming. And I just discovered how that is so accurately related with quantum theory... Everytime we see a gesture that could caught our attention, maybe is bc they are trying to show us something that will happen. (Bc present and future are parallels time, Remember??) So... Is like when you say I HAD A DEJA VU. But maybe is bc you already lived that or you are about to live it. Is a very interesting theory...
So, coming back to HANDS AND FORESHADOW IN DABB'S ERA, let's present the evidence here...
First Sample: DEAN'S MOURNING
Everyone remember this gesture from 12x20, when Dean was very worried bc Castiel was disappeared after running away with Kelly Kline.
Tumblr media
Gif credit @deztiel
Look how worried he is, pressing his lips on his right fist. If you are just watching the series, maybe this could pass unnoticed, but... If you pay attention to the events that will come... You will conclude this was a foreshadow for this two scenes from 13x01...
Tumblr media
Gif credit @spn-imagines-nation
Tumblr media
Gif credit @cesarevora
I'm not discovering nothing new here, a lot of you already know about this sad foreshadow, just showing the evidence so you can get the idea what I'm trying to say here...
Second Sample: SAMMY'S DEATH IN 13X21
I remember it always caught my attention this two scenes from season 13, episode 18 and 20.
Tumblr media
13x18
Tumblr media
Gif credit @myheartofmusic
13x20
I recall people laughing in the last gif bc Sammy looked as a princess in trouble, but I wasn't laughing, I was intrigued about why Sammy was touching his neck and throat again... Well... I discovered why. It was another foreshadow, for this scene.
Tumblr media
Gif credit @clairvoyantsam
This scene from 13x21, Sammy's death. So the hands in his neck/throat was telling us the way he was going to die.
Third Sample: Castiel and his visit to Heaven
This is one of the "hand and foreshadow" I analyzed in one of my specs...
Tumblr media
13x18
Tumblr media
14x07
Gif set credit @inacatastrophicmind
Here we have Castiel visiting heaven, touching the sand from the sand box after Naomi informed him that Heaven was dying. And in the second gif there's still some seconds before this gesture, Castiel was like cleaning his hands as if their had sand. And we know what happened in 13x08 (the following episode) Castiel came back to Heaven to rescue Jack, and he faced the Empty.
Fourth Sample: DESTIEL HOLDING HANDS AND DESTIEL KISS
Ok, I want to make clear here, I just have the evidence about a possible foreshadow, bc all this gestures caught my attention too, but the confirmation of the foreshadow involving Destiel Canon, so... We don't have that (I hope we will do). So take this just a the logic path I was following with all the examples and confirmations we had, ok? This are SPECS and doesn't mean is going to happen. Just presenting evidences.
But you can freaking out if you want. Just a little.
Holding Hands evidence
Tumblr media
I can't put more pics, but there's just another one in 14x07 where they are rubbing the dorso of the hands. And then... There's this one too.
Tumblr media
Gif credit @agusvedder
From 14x08, and don't tell me it doesn't look as if Dean was about to hold Castiel's hand? Reaching for him?
And you must recall the most blantant of the evidence in the past 300 episode, in which Mary and John were holding hands and the two Lebanon girls too (both canon couples were settled as Destiel mirror).
Destiel kiss evidence
As I said I can't put more pics here... And it's good bc I need you to go to this gif set here by @starsmish and tell me what you see...
The sexy and mysterious rubbing lips from 13x14 and 13x15. I won't say anything here, I just want to show you that maybe those gestures caught our attention too... I recall people saying... Was that necessary??? Just to put on fire the fandom with this two handsome men doing that. But after seeing all the evidence I presented here, I just would say... Don't take that just as a provocative gesture... Maybe is a foreshadow too for... Well... You know. 😚
Don't get high your expectations, this could be nothing... Is more safety to say WE HAVE A LOT OF EVIDENCE ABOUT HOLDING HANDS, idk the circumstances in which that could happen... Maybe in a middle of an angsty Lovers separation, as I predicted in my 14x06 meta (Optimism), but hey... We don't work with Dabb.
And WE DON'T HAVE MUCH EVIDENCE ABOUT A DESTIEL KISS. Just the rubbing lips, and that's all. (We need more clues to make an affirmatation or a spec).
To conclude:
The time is not a righteous line, based on the quantum theory, past, present and future could be happening at the same time, and that would explain deja vu. This theory could applicable to Dabb's narrative in the use of the gestures with hands in characters from Supernatural. And it could be clues for the audience to figure out what is about to come in the story.
With three concluded samples confirming this theory, we can hope they're doing now a foreshadow of HOLDING HANDS (ignoring the context in which will happen) and maybe (with less evidence that makes it unlikely) a future Destiel kiss.
I hope you like this, and if you have more evidence to share, please feel free to do it.
