Bob, bipolar disorder and meth use

I'm at a place in my hyperfixation where I'm researching Meth addiction (I'd already researched Bipolar disorder) and oof what a dangerous mix for someone's mental health *insert sweating emoji*.

Meth has almost all the same effects than a manic episode has with someone with Bipolar (+ much worse physical side effects & creating dependence). From the few sources I've read it's a very unpredictable concoction that can cancel each other out or just make the symptoms of Bipolar exponentially worse. Which also makes it very hard for practitians to diagnose because of their similar effects/symptoms on mood regulation.

It opened up a lot of questions and stuff to explore with Bob's backstory (and story within the fic I'm writing). For example, I'm pretty sure Bob has never been properly diagnosed for his Bipolar. He said he's had these moods since he was young (so not caused by his meth use, which can happen) but doesn't use any diagnosis by name (let's step aside the exec reason for that). He only described what he's been feeling. His meth addiction could explain 1) Why he didn't receive a lot of good mental health care in his life, less accessible for him but also 2) why he was never diagnosed with Bipolar.

Another question that arises with that is, why use meth? He might not have consciously chosen meth as 'his drug', it could've been an unfortunate sequence of circumstances. Although he did start by being addicted to another drug in middle grade/high school. Opioids I think? (Ah if someone could find me his file from the movie in a good enough resolution. I've been searching for it!) Then he switched to meth later on. So why? Well, so far my hypothesis is that Bob has much longer and frequent episodes of depression between his manic episodes. And he might 'miss' these manic episodes, since they at least don't make him feel, well, s*******. So he might have started to take meth because it's a stimulant that recreates those highs. Thing is, it'd mess up with his body much more than that.

I'd be interested in hearing people's opinion on this.

You don't have to like weed but I find people who are vehemently anti-weed but claim to be left leaning infuriating. If you go into a rage because you smelled someone smoking pot, how the fuck do you expect to form community with people addicted to meth? It's easier to say you hate smokers than to say you hate all drug users in leftist spaces because one makes you sound a bit like a square while the other is the writing on the wall. You aren't anti-weed, you're anti-drug user and anyone who uses substances is not safe around you.

EDIT: Glad to see this post take off. Ironically I've not been able to smoke for almost 4 months because of an injury that landed me in a nursing home. Please help me keep the apartment I am trying to get well enough to move back to.

okay also semi related post. I think it is really silly when people make all these posts about how adderall is so different than meth and start saying demeaning stuff about meth users when they’re discussing the artificially created adderall shortage. the two drugs are both stimulants and yeah they are not chemically identical but they are enough the same that I currently know of a clinical trial where people are piloting adderall as a form of MAT for meth users. (Which has been really popular with the participants so far, people were telling me they liked having access to a consistent supply of adderall and were interested in reducing their meth use to only a couple times a week instead.) so maybe we should start thinking a little bit more about how there’s a lot of propaganda sensationalizing and stigmatizing meth use and stop blaming people who use meth for a shortage that the DEA is causing!!!

genuinely so many of you want to be leftist and "punk" and countercultural soooooo bad but you refuse to become comfortable with the concept of people taking drugs for fun because they like it and not because they were somehow tricked or forced into it without knowing what they were getting themselves into

you'll be like "addiction is a disease!!" but think you're better than those degenerate stoners because you only drink energy drinks and white claws and would never touch "illegal drugs"

many if not most drugs CAN be consumed completely safely with almost 0 risk to the user and even if that werent true and all drugs were extremely dangerous you still wouldn't be better than those of us who love doing drugs recreationally

lighten up and grow up. get offline, talk to real adults, and stop being shocked to discover that they enjoy doing stuff that adults do like have sex and do drugs and even listen to rock and roll
