Today in JSA History: First Appearance of The Young All-Stars
Tumblr media
Iron Monroe (Arnold Monroe), Flying Fox, and their team the Young All-Stars first appeared in Young All-Stars #1, released on June 3, 1987. The team was created by Roy Thomas, Dann Thomas, Michael Bair, and Brian Murray as a post-Crisis on Infinite Earths solution—stand-ins for the Earth-Two characters who were erased from continuity.
Each member of the team served as a symbolic replacement for a classic DC hero:
Iron Monroe – Superman
Flying Fox – Batman
Fury – Wonder Woman
Dan the Dyna-Mite & Sandy the Golden Boy – Robin
Neptune Perkins & Tsunami – Aquaman
Tigress – Possibly Catwoman?

Today in JSA History: First Appearance of Flying Fox
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Flying Fox first appeared in Young All-Stars #1, released on June 3, 1987. The team was created by Roy Thomas, Dann Thomas, Michael Bair, and Brian Murray as a post-Crisis on Infinite Earths stand-in for the Earth-Two Batman who was erased from continuity.
Flying Fox (named after the largest species of bat) was loosely inspired by a story from Adventure Comics #275, where a teenage Bruce Wayne visits Smallville and dons a magical witch doctor costume from Lana Lang's father's collection to battle a robot. The newspapers dubbed him the “Flying Fox.”
Flying Fox hails from the Quontauka tribe near the Arctic Circle in Canada and is a descendant of Arak, Son of Thunder. After he and his father were killed by Nazis, his grandfather—the tribe’s shaman—revived him, taught him mystic arts, and gave him a magical red fox-fur cloak. He was then sent to the U.S. to fight alongside the Allies.
After Young All-Stars ended, Flying Fox largely disappeared from comics until a surprise reappearance in the satirical One-Star Squadron by Mark Russell and Steve Lieber. I had hoped he might return during the Batman Incorporated era—someone like Grant Morrison could’ve done something truly wild and wonderful with him.
