Cyclops and Emma Frost decide to be friends without benefits

Post AvX Emma's telepathy is on the fritz, unwittingly letting people know her most private thoughts. It's a bit of a nightmare scenario for her, especially considering she's beating herself up for everything that led to this point. She's isolated herself physically, but Scott comes looking for her.

He doesn't say anything at first, merely inviting her along to the faculty greeting new students. As she's unable to just pluck the answer out of his head or even get some clues, she straight up asks him if he 'overheard.' Unfortunately, he did, though he's quite supportive. He goes for a positive spin on her thoughts leaking - maybe her powers are healing.

Emma is really not used to this. A lifetime of knowing exactly what others are thinking is significant, and having to trust people's words like the rest of us will take some getting used to. She's quite open about how difficult it is for her, especially with Scott. They're both used to the most intimate kind of psychic rapport but they'll have to make do the old fashioned way. Scott has mixed feelings about not being together, something Emma is inclined to believe.

Scott thinks Emma hates him, but she turns it right back on him and points out his self-loathing. It's a very good read, as he admits. Neither of them see how they could get back together, but I don't buy it, frankly. They're quite good together, though they're both pretty fucked up right now. They probably shouldn't get back together, but their dynamic is still there. Respect for each other and an excellent working relationship. Either way, it's a healthy chat to have. I especially enjoy Emma pointing out that Chuck wasn't the saint Scott's guilt has turned him into - and he agrees, though few others will.

Emma agrees to stay, though I don't think there's anywhere else for her to go. Still, that she chooses to be vulnerable here instead of anywhere else says a lot. No romance for now but they'll give platonic power couple a go. Scott's really glad that Emma stays, and she's happier about that than she wants to let on. He finds out anyway but he merely lets her know that he heard that.

Magik the weirdo comes to let them know everyone is waiting for them. She asks directly if they're getting back together, thanking the dark lords when they answer truthfully. I really dig the broken powers dynamic the four main characters have for much of this run, and the simmering resentment bubbling beneath the surface. Everyone hates them, Scott especially, but they do their best to keep the mission alive in ways the X-Men institution at the Jean Grey School won't. SHIELD and the Avengers won't love them, but they do get a grassroots following happening and plenty of defectors from the JGS.
