That post going around about people wanting a modern iPod and that overpriced nostalgia bait audio player BEHOLD

a modern mp3 player. or DAP (digital audio player), as they're called since most people who are still into these use formats other than mp3.
Yes, it is a sony walkman. I bought it on a Japanese proxy shipping website and the total price after having it shipping from Tokyo to the US (in tarriff hell, even) was around $130. that bullshit faux-ipod was $250 and entirely overpriced for what it was offering.
In the picture I have spotify playing on it, and runs android so that you can using music streaming apps, but is also has the ability to store music on it, and has a microsd slot that supports up to 1 TB microsdxc
It has a headphone jack. It supports bluetooth. It has usb-c charging
I would show you the on board music but it is currently empty because I'm setting it up as it literally just came in.
But this was a specific model that I wanted so I had to go out of my way to buy it from Japan. There are other, cheaper options, especially if you don't want streaming!
Like, just look into DAPs and do NOT be afraid to buy devices from China (unless its for like bullshit tarriff reasons that make it stupid expensive). Chinese brands are basically leading the audio player scene and making great shit. You can basically find any device you want with whatever features you might be looking for and can find things for under $100 and things for literal thousands of dollars.
And there are non-Chinese options since we are in tarriff hell right now. I bought a literal Sony Walkman and had it imported from Tokyo because I wanted this specific model. there's an option you can buy from Sony directly for $350.
"I want a modern ipod!"
No! You want a DAP! Go find one! They're out there and available right now!

wdym it wasnt supported?
It was a microsdxc with an adapter to a normal size. It just would not work with the ds and I couldn't get it to do anything.
I have an sdhc coming soon, I had no clue ds' were so picky.

Me pulling my [short] hair out trying to figure out why my Switch's MicroSDXC card randomly got unrecognized by it last week (despite it being mostly unused leading up to it), even though that same card gets read on my laptop fine and it can read another MicroSD card or two I have lying around (eliminating potential reader issues), ultimately resigning myself to buying a new SD card I guess:
was going to open the case up in case the reader might've snapped out of place, but since it can read other cards, that's probably not an issue--just annoying I have to buy a new one if it's perfectly fine otherwise... 😩
#tekisuto#i'm too sleepy for this#i just wanted to take it to the office for youtube and maybe smashing during lunch tmrw 😩#but if a new sd card fixes it good#[also love being thrown off with desktop looking a bit weird til i realized it's probably bc of Live finally being ditched lol]

this is such a lie lmao theres no plateau
there's nearly a hundred models of phones now with full terabyte onboard storage as an option. there's hundreds of models that have storage card slots instead and which support 2 terabyte microsd cards - which are of course pricy as fuck but thats what you get for the literal high end of current microSDXC storage - you can get the 1 terabyte cards for like $75 tho.
it's currently expected that next year the high end phones will be getting 1.5 tb and 2 tb internal storage options - and its worth noting that the internal flash designs used are much faster than using a card though that don't matter much for just playing music and videos ofc.
and if you really want to go apeshit with your portable storage? go buy an 8 terabyte nvm.e SSD for a pc, put it in a usb 3 or 4 enclosure and connect that up to most recent phones, ones with proper usb 3 or 4 on the usb-c port. and you can store tons of shit with that. older/cheaper phones that only support usb 2.0 over their usb port will have problems using those, but for them you can use SATA-based portable SSD enclosures that also let you have tons of terabytes and aint that big a problem to carry.
the other thing is a lot of newer model phones are dropping the old smaller storage sizes. lots of phone families, now the smallest you can get for onboard storage is like 256 gb (which is enough to store like ~2000 hours of high quality music and some games, and like a bunch of well compressed movies, all at once mind you) where a few years back they were still pushing 32 or 64 gb as the low end model.
smartphone storage plateauing in favor of just storing everything in the cloud is such dogshit. i should be able to have like a fucking terabyte of data on my phone at this point. i hate the fucking cloud
