DBDA Fic Recommendation List - Part 1

I have read SO many Dead Boy Detectives fics, so why not give some love to some of my favorites? (Fair warning: almost all of these are Payneland centered, and most of it is hurt/comfort and fluff)

The Case of the Hellbound Souls by JUBE514 (@jube514) Rated: T 21,890 words Summary: The Dead Boy Detectives take up a case that results in Edwin losing his memories, and they must band together to get his memories back Notes: I'm a sucker for a good memory loss fic, and I love the way that this one executes the angst of a typical memory loss fic whilst making it heartstoppingly sweet.

a map of your stars by pisces_spider (@pisces-swirlix) Rated: T 19,181 words Summary: 5+1 fic where Charles draws Edwin's different features Notes: I love the way that this one portrays Charles and Edwin's dynamic. They don't shy from writing Edwin as a smartass or mildly pretentious, and Charles' short attention span is definitely prominent in this fic. And yet, it all blends together perfectly in this fic, with their mutual fondness for each other still shining beyond anything else — in perfect Payneland fashion

Tonight's the Night You Fight Your Best Mate's Dad by Opossum_Subatomic Rated: T 22,279 words Summary: 5+1 coffee fic Notes: This fic perfectly captures the "no homo," "and they were roommates" vibes of Charles and Edwin's relationship. This fic truly had me stopping every 5 minutes to smile, shake my head, and think "this is so them."

Reach Out And Touch Faith by coloursflyaway (@coloursflyaway) Rated: T 7,482 words Summary: After his confession, in order to avoid crossing any boundaries, Edwin stops being as physically intimate with Charles as he used to be — and Charles has Feelings about it (basically Charles being touch starved for 7k words!!). Notes: THIS the fic. This is the fic that got me into fanfiction, and oh my God, I am forever grateful I was recommended this fic back in June

Brothers In Arms by Stringsofstars Rated: T 40,538 words Summary: The Dead Boy Detectives solve a case helping Gregory Payne — Edwin's late brother — pass on, as he is tethered to the land of his death. Notes: Very interesting OCs and it does a great job delving into Edwin's family life. I admittedly know very little about the Edwardian era, but it all felt very well researched

Don't Die of Ignorance by dearheartdont (@dearheartdont) Rated: M 559 words Summary: A snapshot of what Charles' life was like in the 80s, specifically during the AIDS crisis with a homophobic father Notes: I am always a sucker for fics that do a bit of a deeper dive into what Charles' childhood was like — especially as a bisexual teenager growing up during the AIDS crisis — and this fic does exactly that

Cry With Joy At The Depth Of My Love by coloursflyaway (@coloursflyaway) Rated: T 18,028 words Summary: Edwin takes the Cat King up on his offer and goes missing for 6 weeks. Charles has Feelings about it. Notes: This fic has so much angst, and I absolutely live for Charles Rowland angst — and God, is it worth it for the fluff at the end

Edwin Payne's First Solo Case by T4Tsangho Rated: G 566 words Summary: Edwin Payne shoots Donald trump. Need I say more? Notes: This fic is fucking hilarious and everybody needs to read this

Rated: M 69,935 words (not yet finished) Summary: Season 1 AU where the Cat King takes Charles instead of Edwin, and Charles realizes that he's in love first Notes: It is a perfect mix of everything: Charles angst (so much Charles angst), unresolved Payneland tension, Niko and Edwin being besties, Crystal and Edwin annoying the crap out of each other, Charles being jealous of Monty, it's all just truly perfect

Notes: This fic has a very interesting depiction of what Charles' life might've been like before his death, and it's honestly probably my favorite DBDA fic. Plus, one of the OCs in this story has genuinely become one of my blorbos; I am kind of obsessed with him, actually

Woe, brainrot be upon ye. An unlucky Storch and lucky Kolibri hunt for spies in a Vineta facility and are also gay (of course)

I don't have names for them yet but if you want the gist of their deal:

H13-Hesperides is a Vinetan facility, built to assist in the construction and security of a new Nation-built Sektor. Reports of possible Imperial spies as well as general discontent in the population leads to the arrival of a Kolibri cadre and Falke unit to help root them out (timeline-wise this is set just as gen 6 replikas are being produced). STCR-H1304 and KLBR-H1307 are assigned as the core leads of the investigation

STCR-H1304

Considered the unluckiest unit in the facility. More accidents and deaths have happened under her command compared to any other

As a result she’s infamous to both the replikas and gestalts as a bad omen of sorts

Her left eye was damaged by shrapnel due to an explosion. While still functional, she can't see clearly out of it anymore

Default state is silent fuming that can boil over into pure anger

More cautious than the average Storch (when not blinded by rage)

Hasn't felt truly relaxed in a long time

Very straightforward, in words, actions, and thoughts. Kolibri appreciates this simplicity 

Wants to drop history or mythology facts when something reminds her of it but has learned to stop herself since no one really cares all that much

KLBR-H1307

Confident, stubborn, and very willing to prove her abilities to those who underestimate her

Very good at thinking and improvising on the fly and in stressful situations, aided further by her bioresonance

Also has a very good “sixth sense” and almost seems to react to danger before it happens (she just says this is a byproduct of her bioresonance and nothing more)

The rest of her cadre treat her as a lucky charm of sorts. She originally wasn’t supposed to be apart of this cadre but ended up as the final member due to production issues elsewhere

Not used to the bustle of a busy facility and can get overwhelmed by all the different thoughts

Her hair is always messy. She says she never has the time to brush it (she just can’t be bothered)

Likes reading mystery books the most. She always tries to figure out the answer before the reveal

Enjoys listening to Storch’s mythological or historical knowledge. Gets her to open up eventually about it

Regardless, I really love this comic! It's about Loop coming back looking exactly the same as Siffrin. He wants to help them talk to the party, but they refuse to reveal who they are, so they both decide to switch the role of "Siffrin", which leads to many shenanigans. (There are small differences between the two, mainly their eyes, so as the reader you know who you're looking at.)

Right now only the prologue is out, but it looks incredible, and I find the premise very interesting.

A Leon headcanon (0_o)— yeahg I like the headcanon that his gloved hand is a prosthetic. This headcanon lead me on a really cool rabbit hole looking up medieval prostheses and stuff and there’s a guy from the 1500s I think named Götz whose hands are in a museum— anyway really cool stuff, if I can find it again I’ll add the link to some of the websites I ran into about it :3. It also lead me to research the time period Leon is from and I discovered that Leon would actually not have been a crusader fun fact! His game takes place approximately two years before the crusades are presumed to have started, he likely would’ve been a knight in other conflicts. Actually the year he got knighted (pretty sure it was like 1088???) lines up with a revolt that happened in northern France and southern Britain, and given that he has a French last name, it would make more sense if he was a part of that— he actually would’ve left his baron title to go fight Walter instead of fighting in the crusades! Again I’ll have to idk maybe make a post with a ton of random historical stuff cause it’s really interesting :3

More Leons hehehe— it was supposed to be a much larger whole page dedicated to each Belmont thing, but this one just kinda ended up doodles related to mostly just one headcanon lol. They’re all gaming on the same weird off brand arcade cabinet thing I have in my house hahahaha yay projecting! Anyway, they’re playing Darkstalkers. Richter is a Felicia main and is wayyyyyyyy too competitive to let Leon win. Leon (picked BB cause he thought she looked nice— was surprised when she had a gun lol) has never played an arcade game in his life and is struggling lol. Both Trevor (plays as Morrigan and Talbain and button mashes) and Simon (very serious Anakaris, Zabel, and Lilith player) are desperately trying to give him pointers, but they’re both conflicting with each other and it’s all fighting game lingo that Leon doesn’t know so uh 💀💀💀💀💀. Christopher (Rikuo main) is waiting his turn, as is Juste (bizarre secret Marionette copy character main). Julius is laughing at the whole situation and will not be playing, not because he’s not like an arcade fighter fan or anything, but because he’s just more of a Tekken and Soul Caliber guy.

This is a redraw of a way older doodle that I can’t find the original of rn, it might be on Instagram idk. The text says “I can lift him! :D” and yes, Trevor evidently can lol. Simon is a little uh only unsure about it 💀.

He mouths the words in his not-sleep, holding fistfuls of his linen sheets, trying not to tremble as his vision blurs, rendering the darkened silhouettes into misshapen creatures of the night, tears wetting his pillow case and trailing down his cheeks and salting his lips. He would give up just about anything to be sentimental now, so that must be part of why he turns the key in the lock of the door and slips in, as the sun sets and it's like he's tumbled into a picture from the past. Nothing much has changed -- Xia Fei's invaded Vein's place plenty of times and then been left to his own devices -- the silence is the same. But knowing it's not, not truthfully, is a carving in his heart, slow, steady and painful.

He hadn't actually taken the key, that day. Stubborn in his conviction that such a thing crossed a line of unprofessionalism he couldn't stomach for the moment, he placed them down on one of the low, glass coffee tables. But, it remained there, winking at Xia Fei when the light hit it, almost like a challenge. Finally, he gave in and swiped them after Vein had gone away on a business trip for three weeks, which had meant Xia Fei couldn't be let in to watch movies on his flatscreen TV, couldn't use Vein's bath and body wash, enveloped in his clean scent hidden under the smoky overtone, on his soft L-shaped sofa in his silk robe, indulging in these little luxuries. That was the only reason he swiped the keys, of course. Not because he missed Vein, wanted to crawl into his bed even if he wasn't in it -- wanted to be there, laid out for him in his clothes, his scent, his possession, for when Vein got back. A welcome home.
