“So where are you from?” Shinumi says, the last word making his voice crack. He winces, but the bartender seems unfazed.

“Yokohama. What about you?” She picks up another glass to dry as she turns to face him.

Shinumi wrestles with the question for a second. “Nagoya. You know, I think I went on a trip to Yokohama at some point.”

“Really? Where did you go?”

“My school did a field trip to… Seriyo High, I think? Either way, it was some highschool there for some sort of dance thing.” Shinumi didn’t realize what he had said until he saw the bartender’s widened eyes.

“Dance? Like, as a competition?” She cocked her head with curiosity. Shinumi blushed with embarrassment. “...It was a long time ago.”

“You definitely have the body for it, but you didn’t answer my question.” she throws a wink at him.

Shinumi takes a deep breath, attempting to ignore the past welling up within him, “Sometimes it was for competition, sometimes it was more like… a performance. I was a fan of the latter.”

This is the Toonami Trending Rundown for the month of January 2025. Toonami begins its 13th year back on Adult Swim as the block is in a “transitional period” of sorts with Invincible Fight Girl presently rerunning after completing its first season and Toonami Rewind being “merged back” into the block at the rear half of the lineup.

The first scheduled Toonami of the year, January 4-5, was a holiday marathon night of Uzumaki, so no trends were spotted during the 4-episode marathon. For the night of January 11-12, #Toonami trended in the USA on Twitter alongside Mashle, Invincible Fight Girl, and Blue Exorcist. On the night of January 18-19, only Toonami would trend. And for the night of January 25-26, #Toonami would trend alongside Mashle and Blue Exorcist.

The feature for the January 4-5 edition of Toonami featured a new Toonami ID titled “Laser TOM.” You can check it out below:

January 11-12’s feature was a game review for Squirrel with a Gun, an indie action-adventure game developed by Dee Dee Creations and published by Maximum Entertainment. It received a 7.5 out of 10 score.

The developers of Squirrel with a Gun, were quite happy about the Toonami bump on Twitter.

January 18-19 saw another new Toonami ID, titled “Strange Ritual.”

And the feature for January 25-26 was supposed to be a game review for the newest Indiana Jones video game by Bethesda, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Game. I say supposed to as the Cartoon Network broadcast control accidentally showcased a promo for Barney’s World, the newest animated series in the Barney franchise, which was probably meant to be showcased during the Cartoonito early morning hours rather than on Adult Swim/Toonami. Nonetheless, it received a score of 9/10 and you can check out that game review below.

Unfortunately, Adult Swim has decided to pull the plug on Toonami Rewind in the new year as the Friday afternoon throwback lineup was retired by the end of the year, with said timeslots being given back to Checkered Past. No official reason was given why Toonami Rewind was canceled. Alongside potential issues with Toonami bringing in additional programming for Rewind, it is likely that Adult Swim is seeing a change in strategy with the network inking a deal with Disney to bring Family Guy back to the late-night programming block for the first time since 2021. It’s not all lost, however, as the Rewind lineup would be “merged back” into the Saturday night Toonami lineup, with Naruto starting over from the beginning starting January 11th, while Sailor Moon returning on January 25th.

Mike McFarland, voice actor and ADR Director whom has lent his talents to many Toonami shows over the years including Dragon Ball, Full Metal Alchemist and Attack on Titan, was diagnosed with a massive brain tumor after originally dealing with symptoms of an ear infection. Fortunately, Mike underwent emergency surgery to successfully remove the tumor and is presently recovering. Our thoughts go out to Mike as he recovers, and if you wish to help Mike in a philanthropic way, feel free to donate to his GoFundMe set up by his colleagues.

Studio MAPPA on Friday has released new info and a key visual for Shinichiro Watanabe’s new series Lazarus. The season will be 13 episodes in length and will be airing in Japan on TV Tokyo this April 2025. Adult Swim has also announced on Instagram that Lazarus will also be airing on Toonami stateside in April with a concrete premiere date TBA. We’ll keep you posted.

Finally, The Pillows, the band best known among anime fans for creating the theme music for FLCL, has just announced that they have disbanded after 35 years following their January 31st concert in Yokohama. The band members plan on continuing their respective careers individually. All I can say is, Thank you, our twilights, and Ride on Shooting Star.

A perfectly bright, sunshine Summer day in Yokohama. Which is the nicest way of saying everyone is burning and seconds away from turning to ash. Open windows, a broken air-con, and a single dingy fan to keep their sanities. Or Yagami's sanity, at least, who's cross-legged, butt on the floor, face in the fan, going,

"Ahhhhhhhhhhh--"

Kuwana lies on the couch, scowling. "Could you--"

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh--"

"Could you shut up?" Kuwana tilt his can of beer in Yagami's direction, who didn't even turn to look at him.

"Just leave him," Sugiura says from the kitchenette. "He's not budging 'till the sun's out. Or until Tsukumo gets the air-con fixed." Tsukumo spins around in his chair to give a thumbs-up, before returning to his computer. Kuwana's scowl only deepens, and he chugs the last of his beer audibly. Sugiura opens the fridge, taking the chance to relish the only other source of coolness they have, before sighing at the sight. "We've run out of beer."

"And whose fault is that?" Yagami says, pointedly side-eyeing Kuwana like a rich mum at a homeless man.

"Hey, what the shit? You go ignoring me but the minute you find one thing to insult me for you go ahead and--"

"Ahhhhhhhhhhh--"

"Oi!"

Return of Sunday Six!

This is from a little adventure fic featuring fourteen-year-old Ryuji and Daigo getting into shenanigans in Ijincho. Enjoy!

Daigo felt himself slide forward in his seat a little as the train decelerated. It coasted into the station, a man’s tinny voice over the speakers announcing the station: Jinnai. His stop. 

The train ride had cooled some of his anger, and as he disembarked the train and made it his way out of the station, Daigo found he could relax his tense shoulders. He squinted in the bright sunlight as he stepped out toward the road, not entirely certain where he would go. But he figured he could pick a direction and see where it took him. 

He wasn’t in any hurry, anyway. The old man wouldn’t miss him for days. 

Daigo looked this way and that. Yokohama was hardly a different world from Tokyo–it wasn’t even that far–but he was out of Tojo territory. Any yakuza he might encounter had no alliance to him. If got in any trouble, he’d be on his own. 

Which is exactly what he wanted. 

And trouble was never far from Daigo in those days. He took three steps into the road and was nearly bowled over by what felt like a truck. It wasn’t a truck though, but a person. A big one. Daigo stumbled but caught himself, and turned toward whoever had run into him. 

At fourteen, just about anyone would see Ryuji Goda and call him a man. He towered over most people, and any adult who had to look up at someone would surely miss the youthful roundness of his face and that teenage skinniness of his body. What people saw first was a tall man with bleach blond hair, and to Daigo, Ryuji could be any age between twenty-five and fifty-five.

Daigo glared up at the other boy, making sure he furrowed his brow deeply like Kiryu would. “Watch where you’re going,” he snapped, balling his hands into fists. 

But Ryuji had hardly even been aware of Daigo. He heard his words, but glanced down at him and saw a skinny kid trying his damn hardest to look mean and tough. It brought to mind those mean little dogs that snapped at everyone, and the thought made Ryuji laugh. 

This did nothing to abate Daigo’s anger, however. Whatever had been soothed by the train had been irritated again. Daigo raised a fist, took a breath, and charged toward the stranger.

Hikawa Maru at sunset

Moored permanently at Yokohama as part of a park and seafront promenade, is the ocean liner Hikawa Maru, built in 1928-1930. After life as a passenger ship and a hospital ship during World War II, it survives in impeccable condition - the paint is vibrant and there's hardly any rust to notice.

It is a museum ship and a protected monument, as evidenced by the banners:

Obviously, I was too late to be able to visit the ship. I had arrived at Shinagawa late afternoon and was hopping over to Yokohama for a sunset walk-around and dinner.

I'm bringing it up because Mike Brady featured the Hikawa Maru on a recent episode of Oceanliner Designs about ships that avoided destruction and that still survive.
