Week 8 Observations

Deceiver

Laccaria laccata

Observed at home on 2.11.25. It is native to Texas and found all over North America, Europe, Mexico and Costa Rica.

These are very young mushrooms and when they age they change color becoming more pale or washed out.

These are edible though some say the stem is tough to eat. They can be pickled or dried.

They range from small to large. All the different ways it can look is where it gets the name Deceiver.

Northern Mockingbird

Mimus polyglottos

Observed at Galveston Island State Park on 2.15.25

Is a year round resident in much of the U.S. and more northern birds will go south during winter.

It’s Latin name translates to “many tongued mimic” and are known to sing several hundred different songs! They mimic other birds, man made noises and even some frog/toad species!

They can be extremely territorial and will dive at anything that they deem a threat (including a poor, helpless golden retriever that just needed to go potty!).

Evergreen Bagworm Moth

Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis

Observed on 2.21.25 at Galveston Island State Park…not on a tree.

I believe this is the evergreen bagworm moth. It is native to this region.

It forms a case from silk, fecal matter and debris.

Common chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemum morifolium

Observed at home on 2.22.25. It has been introduced to Texas but is not considered invasive.

The flowers, stalks and leaves are all edible and have been used medicinally for thousands of years.

They are good at reducing indoor pollutants.

They are even used in some insecticides!

Asian Elephant

Elephas maximus

Observed at the zoo.

They are endangered and are the largest land mammals in Asia.

They are extremely intelligent, have self-awareness, show complex behaviors and can feel compassion and grief. They live in herds led by a matriarch and have very strong familial bonds.

They can live anywhere from 60 to 80 years.

Mexican Fan Palm

Washingtonia robusta

Observed at home on 2.22.24.

Native to Mexico and introduced here and other coastal regions.

Under perfect conditions these palms can grow upwards of 100 feet tall and live over 500 years. This one was about 6-7 ft tall so it’s got a long way to go!

The leaves just fold down instead of falling off and this creates a dense “skirt�� that animals use to roost in.

Hoary bowlesia

Bowlesia incana

Observed at home 2.23.25.

Native to this area, most of the southwestern US and South America. It starts growing in winter and through the spring.

It’s in the carrot family along side parsley and cilantro. Used in salads or for seasoning. Reported to not have to the same molecule that cilantro does making it taste like soap to some (including myself).

Mimus polyglottos Detto volgarmente tordo beffeggiatore è un uccello passeriforme della famiglia dei Mimidi, diffuso in America Settentrionale e Centrale. Il nomignolo di tordo beffeggiatore deriva dalle notevolissime capacità vocali del maschio, che gli permettono di imitare sia canti di altri uccelli, sia versi di altri animali, sia molti dei suoni che sente. Le imitazioni non sono perfette, ma sono ben riconoscibili. Inoltre, come richiamo sessuale, emette sempre nuovi versi originali, anche se continua a imitare molti dei suoni, che sente anche quando è accoppiato, perché la femmina, ascoltando il canto, valuta sia lo stato di salute e di capacità del maschio sia il suo territorio. Une petite famille bien enjouée... Commissure orangée bien encore en évidence, l’œil gris, voilà sans aucun doute un juvénile. Jeune adolescent, il se nourrit par lui-même sous la surveillance lointaine d’un parent. Lorsque j’y suis allé j’en dénombrait trois à se suivre et se pourchasser continuellement, se déplaçant alors d’un secteur à un autre dans ce jolie petit parc urbain situé en bordure de la petite rivière Saint-Jacques à Brossard. J’aurai vu aussi un Grand héron, plusieurs juvéniles Parulines jaune et Bruants chanteurs et même quelques lapins à queue blanche, sans parler de nos oiseaux noir envahissants habituels, présent, quant à eux, en grand nombre. Les jeunes Moqueurs imposaient d’ailleurs leur loi sur ce territoire pourchassant Étourneaux et Carouges qui s’approchaient trop près de leurs buissons.      When Jaime hit the ground, only one thought crossed his mind: ow. The impact, and the fall previous to it, had been a complete and utter surprise. He had not even thought as he’d stepped off the building’s edge, an act he’d performed countless times. He’d expected his wings to emerge, for his flight abilities to kick in just as they always had. Clearly, that wasn’t on the shelf here. His plummet had been quick and brutal, only broken when Jaime crashed into a junkpile of half-rotted boxes. It took the breath from his lungs, caused pain to bloom throughout his whole body. Or, in the case of his arm, to snap through it like lightning. On landing, a terrible crack! had been heard, immediately followed by a starburst of agony: a clear sign that Jaime’s arm, had, indeed, broken. A groan had just left his throat when, in his head, Khaji Da spoke.

           Flight capabilities / non-functional.

       ❝ Now you tell me...? ❞

           Damage <Bone Fracture> detected.                             Healing: Commenced.

     ❝ You do that... I’ll just... lay here. ❞ He could only hope no one had actually witnessed his fall, or its aftermath. That would be embarrassing.

Her sword unsheathes from the man’s stomach as a swift kick sends him flying. Nonchalantly she made a few quick swipes with her blade to clean it of blood before continuing on her way. 

Though it seems as if the city wasn’t finished with her, and she raised a hand to block her swing. There is a flash of surprise in her eyes before she pulls her sword back towards her attacker, a telegraphed sweeping motion and the two women disengaged.

“I’ve no quarrel with you, for what reason would lead you to such acts of aggression? Explain yourself, child of men, or I may not feel so merciful again.”
