Checked a bunch of houseplant books out of the library to see if they could help me with my poor long-suffering calathea and I *really* enjoy "The New Plant Parent" by Darryl Cheng. Does a better job than any other source I've encountered at explaining what plant-care instructions actually *mean*, and the focus on learning how plants behave in your specific environment instead of idealized best practices is really refreshing. If you're new to houseplants or have found other books frustrating, see if your library has a copy!

#plant lore #each plant profile has two sets of care instructions #one that's the minimum requirements to keep the plant alive #and one that's what it needs for active growth #i thought that was a really helpful way to conceptualize things #and gives you a good sense of the variety of possible conditions a plant can tolerate #and how you need to treat it differently depending on which side you're leaning towards

Going from a blue-collar job to a pink collar healthcare job has been a crazy transition

#like on one hand omg this building is air conditioned? and im working with mostly women?#but also on the other hand where's the union brother #where's my monthy union meetings with 50 year old men #also 12 hour shifts with only three breaks? and lunch isn’t paid? a 12 hour shift at the factory would be a minimum of 5 or 6 paid breaks #but also no one is dying of heart attacks or having heat strokes on the factory floor and it's not as physically demanding #but also while the workers aren't yknow dying sometimes the people we take care of are?? so theres that #idk the differences and trade offs are interesting

At my break at work straight up "doing it" and by "it" haha, well, let's just say. Looking at state labor laws and jobs that are hiring that I'm qualified for this summer because my job just illegally (I'm fairly certain) shortened our breaks and continues to do illegal firing practices and not adhering to the state labor laws, child labor laws, or disability laws

#and i'm still getting paid minimum wage when most other stores in the area pay above minimum wage.....#like i enjoy my job but they keep making the conditions harder and pulling illegal stuff #i could earn WAY more by working at a restaurant and get tips once the tourist season hits #but i hate change and new jobs make me so anxious so i dont want to start over unless its unbearable

#pdbc #I love him. he’s the sole descendant of a royal family and. if you’ll pardon the pun. is royally fucking things up for himself #he could do so much in life and instead decides to be the next Gordon Ramsay……..such wasted potential #did. did I ever mention that part of him. his clan is called the Ramsay clan after all #he wants to be Gordon Ramsay sooooo fucking bad…….#big theater kid gone wrong energy from him #so many of my posts this year have been pdbc related. it Will happen again.#< (in my defense I’m working on other non-pdbc stuff !! but pdbc stuff is easy to make because I don’t have to think about it)#once I’m not so burnt out I’m really excited to design bingo….not even going to attempt to rn #I hate designing outfits but I’m actually looking forward to his bc he has a horrid mix of royal garments and astereotypical butcher outfit #speaking of butchers. butcher vanity? great song absolutely fits him. cannot stop listening to it #surprisingly him being like. a literal cannibal isn’t even all he does. that’s just a…little quirk of his #like ya’d think him eating people would be more important but nah. he’s a POET and a MAGICIAN 😤😤#I’d say he’s one of the most evil characters but…..kinda all of my characters are #sure bingo tries to eat people and bomb people’s homes but there are side characters who put acid in the water supply and aren’t punished #so bingo’s just par for the course honestly #the best thing he’s ever done is install an air conditioning unit. there wasn’t one before bc Mole (his mom) didn’t like them—#—which resulted in people keeling over from heat exhaustion a lot so. good job for fixing that bingo #it’s the bare minimum but that’s pretty good for him so he can have a round of applause for that #I think I might have mentioned Gerbombs in passing but I love them sm #they’re gerbils genetically engineered to blow up when pressure is placed on them #they’re adorable. thankfully they have no concept of death so they’re just chilling with no worries in the world #before you get sad. Sushi rescued most of the Gerbombs and now cares for them so happy ending #no Gerbombs shall die under her watch. I don’t think I could deal with it if too many Gerbombs died #although they’re called Gerbombs they’re actually more physically close to jerboas #they’re so cute. I should draw a Gerbomb sometime #(I should also probably rename them jerbombs considering they’re not gerbils but ehhhhhhhhhhhhh)

Does anyone else automatically size themselves up with people their age and look for ways that you’re inferior to them? Just me? Ok….

#the reasons why I think like this are…complicated #honestly a lot to do with the #adhd struggle bus #surprise surprise the neurodevelopmental condition has overarching and very specific effects on my life and how I interact with the world #of course disclaimer that this weird thing I have is not inherent to adhd #but maybe is a way of thinking I developed in part due to it #this is a me thing if anyone else relates to this fine but you don’t have to #I think thi oversharing series is a way for me to microdose journaling #I try to get into journaling but I have way too many thoughts #it’s all or nothing either I write nothing or I spend 3 hours documenting everything thought I had that week #I think a lot of this has to do with my persistent issues with time management #and I’ve tried to hide this struggle in a lot of ways because ngl it’s embarrassing #to the point where I held myself back from doing certain things I wanted to do because ‘hmm could you handle it though you’re already #struggling to manage in school with the bare minimum. maybe you just suck’#and this is probably because I went to a college prep school so yeah #there were 14 year olds taking multivariable calculus and people with various talents #to say that I was intimidated would be an understatement. it’s strange because while in middle school my self esteem was decent it dropped #in high school like how stock prices dropped in the beginning of Covid #even though I was like an ok kid I somehow convinced myself that I was dumb and inept #all because I struggled with one area in my life #honestly I’m not sure if I can paint a clear picture of this time. for one #memories are complex. but I do remember feeling that way and needing a lot of support to be hyped up #fuck #I’m now remembering how my aunt used to be that person. she was my cheerleader growing up and practically raised me in childhood #she passed away from cancer right when I turned 15 #shit I’m crying now #during this time in my life I needed a lot of reassurance since I took any small failure as a sign from the universe that I was indeed inept #it was her and my middle school friend who used to rant to me about dragon ball and pewdiepie that hyped me up #my parents were a mixed bag. unfortunately they too sorta overreacted to things like getting a B in math. they used to make me feel like #uchiha-gaeshi overshares

#smiles rambles #like you’re not a slob or ugly for not wearing any makeup #the minimum requirment for getting ready is your natural face #I think it’s gross on how women are conditioned to believe that they’re not ready when they wear no makeup #and this isn’t meant to diss on makeup I think it’s a great way for people to express themselves #but I do think we should get used to our natural faces more and be kinder to ourselves #I’m trying to get used to my natural face more cuz believing that I’m super ugly without makeup isn’t good for self esteem

I think we need to bring back the terms “upper middle” and “lower middle” class bc yall cannot understand this as a spectrum anymore. U do not have to be a billionaire to experience privileges that the average person can never dream of. And poor people are allowed to express frustration about the shitty ways you treat them even if you are not literally elon musk.

The assumption that everyone has at least as much as you do is classist and ignorant, even if it comes from a place of wanting everyone to have those things. Yes everyone should be entitled to a comfortable and joyful existence and you can want more for yourself. Yes you should acknowledge what you have and that you benefit from others not having those things. It can be both

"UNION LEADER RECALLS: No Oakalla dining room, just cold beans in a cell," Vancouver Sun. June 6, 1970. Page 3. ---- By JES ODAM Being a union leader in jail is a dish of cold beans in your cell and a quick move to a forestry camp on the eve of a prison inspection.

At least, this is the way Jeff Power, president of the Marine Workers and Boilermakers Union, found it in 1966 when he was jailed for three months after being found guilty of criminal contempt of court.

The action arose from demonstrations outside the Burnaby plant of Lenkurt Electric after an injunction had been issued.

Three other city labor leaders accompanied Power to jail - Paddy Neale, secretary of Vancouver Labor Council; Tom Clarke, now dead, but at that time vice-president of the Vancouver local of the International Woodworkers of America, and Art O'Keeffe, former business agent of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Their sentences varied from Power's three months up to six months for Neale and Clarke and four months for O'Keeffe.

"We were taken into Oakalla at night," Power recalled Friday.

"They switched us into prison clothing, put us in two-men cells and gave us cold beans to eat.

"Art (O'Keeffe) was in the cell with me and said he guessed we would be taken into the dining room in the morning, but I knew he was in for a surprise.

"In the morning they marched us down two or three levels to get our food and then back to the cell again to eat it.

"We were shifted out of Oakalla pretty quick to a forestry camp near Chilliwack.

"At first they said they would not send us to a camp but there was a group of people due to come round to look at the conditions and they shifted us out quick before they arrived." Power added.

He said Oakalla is a pretty rough place to be.

"I rode freight trains in the 30s but there's nothing worse than Oakalla," he added. "It is unbelievable."

Power said his union has wired federal Justice Minister John Turner requesting him to look at the actions of B.C. courts.

"We think they are actions in violation of all civil rights," he added.

He said in the case of jailed towboat negotiator Arnold Davis, the court heard the views of the company involved - MacMillan Bloedel Ltd.-but not those of the 2,200 MасMillan Bloedel employees affected by the Canadian Merchant Service Guild picket line.

"They (the employees) probably approved of the picket line," he said.
