Rubies, Diamonds, Fire & Blades
By VixenRose1996 @sweetvixen1996
On Fanfiction.net & Archive of Our Own
Status: Complete; Oneshot; 15,814 words; 1st part of There is Always Something About the First One series
Summary: After witnessing an indiscretion on Jean's part, Scott is so hurt that he runs off and seeks comfort in the company of an old lover. This leaves Jean, who has been feeling unstable since the events on Liberty Island, to deal with her own guilt, anger, and jealousy. Loyalties are torn, children must be allowed to grow up. No one is happy and all must confront what they want.
My thoughts: I read this fic a bit ago, and I thought about it again and was like I have to find it, but I couldn't remember how I found it in the first place so I spent some time scouring FF.net for it and recalled why I think of FF.net as a last resort bc its impossible to find shit there. But I was like I really want to reread it and rec it bc I really liked it. And then I found it on AO3! I feel like this fic and minisinoo's Mickey Blue Eyes & Body Memory kind of speak in conversation with each other except this one has Scemma vibes and MBE/BM is Jott endgame (plus the whole they fix Scott's disability bit makes me uncomfortable with that particular minisinoo fic). I feel like this is more cohesive in its writing/voice even if we never get a really satisfying ending especially re: everything going on with Jean. But that's life too ig.

could you probably recommend any hedric fics, especially if they're not on ao3?
Hi anon! Unfortunately, I don't have any non-AO3 recs. Back when I was reading fanfic pre-AO3, my focus was Sirius and Harry and R/S, so I didn't do much reading beyond that. I'm sure there are some gems on fanfiction.net or even LiveJournal, but I don't have those.
If anyone else from the old days has any links to share, please feel free to reblog.
Paranoia and Puns
Time is Eternity - I love this series. Everyone is alive, Cedric and Harry are football rivals, Wolfstar is raising Teddy, it's great.
The Best - Slytherin!Cedric who is very protective and possessive over Harry.
These Fragile Bodies of Touch and Taste - Harry and Cedric reunite in 2014, and there are lots of complicated feelings left over from the tournament in 1994.
Another Dance - Cedric and Harry go to the Yule Ball together.
Aorist Subjunctive by Minisinoo - So actually, I lied. This fic is a Hedric from fanfiction.net. I have mixed feelings about authors who take down their fics, and then years later someone posts the fic without their permission. On the one hand, it ignores the author's wishes. On the other, AO3 is an archive and archiving things is so important. Idk. If you don't like the concept, don't click on this fic. However, I will say this is probably my favorite Hedric, and it involves a TON of great Sirius content. It also, in true fanfiction.net fashion, does NOT contain a great deal of warnings about what to expect. One thing you might want to be prepared for is mentions of a past Sirius/Regulus relationship (though the series pairing is Wolfstar).
One fic I never see anyone write is the Cedric/Harry bathtub scene from GOF that I deserve. So, if anyone ever writes that, send it my way lol.

Throwback Thursday, Fandom Edition: Swap Those Powers
For my first Fandom Throwback Thursday (in which I will share handwritten and drawn relics from my fannish past), I've chosen a character list for a "Power Swap" AU in the X-Men movieverse. I, along with several other writers, got the idea from a challenge issued by a popular fic writer named Minisinoo in late 2003, but this list is from the spring of 2005, after I mentioned the concept to a friend and we started coming up with ideas together. Above, you can see the characters that we decided to include, which powers they had in this reality, and, in some cases, their new codenames. Not all of those people actually appeared in the movies; reimagining characters from the original X-Men comics was, and likely still is, fairly common practice among movieverse writers.
Although we figured out a lot about how the events of the first movie would play out in this AU (my friend and collaborator deserves a lot of the credit for that), I don't think we ended up writing much (or any) actual story to go with it. "Power Swap" and "Alternate Universe - Power Swap" currently exist as tags on AO3, and contain a few X-Men stories, including responses to Minisinoo's original challenge. It's unlikely that I would ever revisit a Power Swap AU today, but I still think the idea is very cool, and X-Men is one of those fandoms that I've never quite been able to escape.
Also, the scribbled "Pietro = Werewolf" in the margin of my list still makes me smile. I have no idea what we were planning to do with that.

Weird question, but I’m throwing it out into the depths of Tumblr in hopes that someone knows the answer.
Does anyone know what name Minisinoo (HP and X-Men fanficcer) published her original work under? I reread Finding Himself and Special again recently and unnngh, she was a fabulous writer.

I'd believe it, but yeah, would like something to back it up.
so i was googling around to see if i could find some old X-Men darkfic i loved back in like 2002, when dinosaurs walked the earth and livejournal was still relevant, right
(i found it, btw, basically all her stuff is archived, you’re welcome)
anyway, because i’m a creeper, i was like, “okay, who is this Minisinoo person who wrote all this fanfic, she claims in her bio that her day job is Real Actual Published Author but is very cagey about further details”
…well, when you google “minisinoo real name”, the fucking onebox answer is
which, what
i actually cannot find a source for this claim anywhere? where is google onebox getting its information from?!?! is google onebox secretly a giant honking fanfic archivist nerd
anyway, if this is true, then the vice presidential candidate for the goddamn US Green Party in 1996 and 2000 once wrote a 148k grimdark fan prequel novel in which Cyclops starts out as an orphaned sex worker or w/e
also, more recently she’s been involved in the Dakota Access Pipeline protests
it’s a big “if” cause, again, i can’t fuckin find the source, but boy i am so curious on so many levels rn

Fandom Fic Rec: Throwback Edition
Tagged by @blackestglass
Choose 5 fandoms you are no longer active in (as in actively participating/creating in), and then choose 1 fic for each fandom that's stuck with you. Tag 5 people when you're done!
1. The End of the World by FernWithy and sequels (Hunger Games, Haymitch/Effie)
I don’t consider myself a Hunger Games fan. I consider myself a The End of the World by FernWithy fan, and that it incidentally happens to take place in the same universe as The Hunger Games is incidental. I came to these fics having not read anything in The Hunger Games, having only watched the first Hunger Games movie to give me any familiarity with the characters and the stories, and absolutely fell in love. FernWithy has written six full novels and three interstitial novellas clocking in at nearly a million words to tell the story of Haymitch Abernathy (and Effie Trinket) from age 16 to adulthood and they are masterful. Her worldbuilding and plotting are top notch and her ability to mimic the styles of other authors is superb. (I came to know FernWithy through her Harry Potter fanfiction, which is about as stylistically different as it is possible to be.) I come back to reread these once ever few years.
2. Yggdrasil Dreaming by Barkour (MCU, Sif/Loki)
Ah, Sif/Loki, my beloved ship of yester year. This was the fic that really got me shipping them and I never looked back. It goes so hard with the dream imagery and the mythic storyline that draws a lot from Norse myths. The characterization is absolutely top notch, and Barkour has the most gorgeous lyrical prose I’ve ever read. This provides an alternate (ie, written pre-Avengers) take on Loki’s storyline post Thor (2011) and is absolutely beautiful.
3. Cowboys and Indians by Minisinoo (Twilight, Gen Fic Jasper & Leah)
Taking a page out of Trish’s book and rec’ing a fic by Minisinoo. This is what I think of when I consider a fanfics power to be transformative. Obviously the big glaring problem (of many big glaring problems) at the center of the Twilight series is the treatment of the Quileute Tribe. This takes that premise and turns it on its head and creates a deeply poignant metaphor for the relationship between white people and Natives in the offering. Minisinoo is Native (though not Quileute) and the perspective offered in this bit of fanfic is fascinating as it explores an unlikely friendship between a former Confederate soldier turned vampire and a 21st century Native woman turned werewolf.
4. Cutting Water by NessieGG(Naruto, Neji/Tenten & Sasuke/Sakura)
This is basically a wuxia AU and... what a knockout premise for an alternate universe, frankly? This reads like a Chinese fantasy drama in all of the best ways. Technically it’s a Naruto fic, but also I don’t know that you need to know a thing about Naruto to enjoy this. This is high drama, with lots of adventure and action and factional politics with no side necessarily being completely wrong. I love the worldbuilding, and I love the two romances which both are quite distinct and interesting!
5. Baiting the Beauty by @glamaphonic (Game of Thrones/ASOIAF, Jaime/Brienne)
Technically it’s unfinished, but only by a few chapters and still absolutely worth a read. Jaime/Brienne Regency AU in the style of the Regency Romance Novel. This is pure romance novel tropes in the best ways. Brienne makes such an excellent unconventional heroine, a wallflower through and through, and Jaime absolutely fits the role of the rake. The rest is all enemies to lovers and sexual tension and uncovering one anothers hidden hurts and furtive misunderstandings. As befits George RR Martin’s reversal of the Beauty and the Beast trope, they fit the roles of hero and heroine of a romance novel perfectly, and yet they are still recognizably Jaime and Brienne.
6. Mass Effect: Discovery by @pigeontheoneandonly (Mass Effect, Shepard/Kaidan Alenko)
Bonus sixth rec because while I still consider myself in the Mass Effect fandom this fic rearranged my entire brain and I still think about it constantly since I read it. This is a narrative retelling of Mass Effect 1 (with a WIP sequel telling the story of Mass Effect 2) with Shepard/Kaidan as the main pairing. And the characterizations in this are absolutely fantastic. There is a tendency in Mass Effect fanfic to idealize Commander Shepard a bit (owing both to the game idealizing them and their placement as player proxy) that this fic elides. Nathaly Shepard is a fully formed and deeply flawed character from moment one, and Pigeon manages that neat writerly trick of making all of Shepard’s flaws her strongest traits as well. That same level of incisive characterization is applied to everyone else, all woven together with some of the most interesting and tense action scenes I’ve read.
Tagging
@rogueimperator @blindvogel @siderealsandman @wheremermaidsdwell @deliriumsdelight7 and honestly anyone else who wants to do this give me fanfic recs.

Not sure if you read fanfic, but since I've already read all your fics (and consider you one of my favorite fic authors), could you recommend some of your favs? :)
Thank you for the compliment, anon! Sorry for taking so long to get to this.
So the short answer is that I use my FFnet Favorites list differently than many--I have an excellent memory for titles and authors (although I've found a handful that have slipped me over the years) so I don't use it to "bookmark" fics I'm reading. I use it purely for "If you're reading my stuff, you will like reading this other stuff." It's pretty eclectic in that regard--there are one shots and giant tomes and novellas. It's mostly not E/B focused, but mostly canon or close-canon AUs and to a one are gorgeously written. My reading tastes run a little more literary than average so the fics I favorite tend to be very character driven and slow-moving. But if my fics are your jam, everyone there will also likely be your jam.
If I had to pick a few from that list, they would be minisinoo's, Little Obsession's, and FoiPur's. Those are the ones that are my NO YOU NEED TO READ THESE recs. But really everything on that list I consider something people shouldn't miss. However, I haven't done a great job of keeping that up to date with some of the reading I'm doing right now. So some works I'm slow-binging:
I'm working on @jessicanjpa's Tale of Years series and I'm like halfway through the first multichapter one I've read at all so...this is gonna be a long project. 😂 A long really enjoyable project, though!
I'm also reading @edwardsmate4ever's Alice POV BD, Visions Interrupted. It's a very interesting take on that story.
I just started @edwardskhakipants' Solar Eclipse because I'm always here for a good Cullen family fix-it fic.
I don't remember how I stumbled on Simaril's fic but she has some interesting Carlisle-centric vamp fics. She prewrites before starting to post, so her fic posting is taking a break for the moment while she works on the sequel to To Love a Phoenix. That one was way further AU than I would usually read but I really enjoyed it so...looking forward to reading the next one. Bethesda Gray walked onto FFnet ten years ago, dropped a gorgeous novel, and wrote a bunch of a second one and then basically let it sit for ten years. I love the crap out of them both. They're worth the read just for that moment when Sue is like, "What am I supposed to do, explain that my most talented hospitalist is a vampire?"
Anyway...that's a bunch. I'm trying to read a lot more right now because I get more finger-itchy to write the more I'm reading and I really want to finish One Day the Sun Will Rise so that I can actually give it to people.

growing up gay on the internet
(apologies if you’ve seen this on twitter)
The first time I told a girl I loved her, she'd been telling me stories from fanfic she'd been reading. Not right then, a few hours before. When I told her, she stared at me, horrified, and said, "You're trying to make everything like that fanfic." [friends to lovers, slow-burn] Harry Potter, of course. I think Ron/Harry? Of course because everyone I knew in school read Harry Potter, often in great heaving knots gathered around OotP till teachers intervened. Many of us then read fanfic because we just wanted more stories in that place.
I read in other fandoms, at the time X-Men. I am still angry about X3, not just because X3 was bad, but because it wasn't Minisinoo's Grail in re Warren Worthington III. Not that I expected it have a queer Warren. I didn't know at the time that Warren is canonically queer in at least one timeline, and I never expected satisfying queerness from media in any case. This was 2004, early 2005, and wee teenaged Rhea knew better. I was wrong, but not about the movieverse unqueering X-Men. (Incidentally, if you haven't, please watch @eruthrosish's amazing Straightening Up the House, which talks about just this)
But anyway, back to 2004-05, a very little and increasingly angry Rhea trying to explain that it was love! Uninfluenced by fanfic! All me, baby! I mean, it wasn't true, a lot of that was very definitely the fanfic. Where else was I gonna find models of happy queers? Not in Indian media, for sure. In American... Tara Maclay died, Will Truman never got any dates, Lex Luthor was only coded queer. I was years away from reading queer lit, and even there fandom was my guide.
I was lucky, insofar as I went to a single-sex school where a lot of people were gay-for-the-stay, including the girl I was confessing to. But for-the-stay, mostly, leading to my current consternation about the batch group chat I've just joined. The girls I kissed, tho, the girl I was in love with, they weren't thinking of queer futures, and all my dreaming happened with my nose pushed up to the screen of boxy desktops with limited or paid-by-the-hour internet. The last three years of school, I skulked around fandom. I read everything. First as much queer Harry Potter stuff as I could find, then whatever my favourite authors had written in other fandoms, then whatever their friends had written in those. The Magneto in my heart is penknife's wry, wounded one written in the wake of the 1st film. I read *so much* in so many fandoms, wandering around forums and livejournal blogs and the personal & communal websites where people like @astolat and @rageprufrock and @seperis hosted their fanfic. Smallville and pre-Cas SPN and SG1/SGA.
And of course, Harry Potter. We rp'ed Harry Potter en masse, in 04-05: my batch the Marauder generation, our juniors the protagonist's. Rampages and letter-writing and patched-together friendships across school, and in the middle of it, I with my trove of queer fic in a dis/similar school.
This is not, btw, to commend fandom, then or now, but especially then, 5-2 years before RaceFail. (i-was-there-gandalf.gif) Even in my limited (by pocket-money) and very single-minded experience, it was misogynistic & racist, but I could see a brown girl on TV any time. Probably as a joke if she was dark and fat like me [by the standards of my community at the time] but there, anyway. There and straight. Fire had come out when I was learning I liked girls, but it wasn't exactly accessible. Girlfriend had just been released & I hated it.
All I wanted from fandom was to be flooded with stories of queerness, the possibility that I could become an adult without suddenly wanting to kiss (or marry!) men, that it didn't have to be a phase I would grow out of, or an entanglement, like Ma said, from which I could escape. A paucity of imagination, perhaps. I didn't know to demand canonical queers till I was in college. I still barely know how to demand canonical Indian queers. All I wanted was girls kissing girls, not as a game or dare or all the excuses the girls kissing me used. Queer love, queer domesticity, queer pining that ended in mutual confessions, fandom's favourite games. I'd have done so much better in my board exams if I hadn't been spending every free minute reading about Remus/Sirius or Lex/Clark or Jack/Daniel. (Notice the lack of f/f)
A note also in memory of all the we're-not-gay-we-just-love-each-other fic that I very possibly read against the grain as people escaping the shackles of comphet because of the strength of their love. (I didn't know the word comphet. What I was thinking was very awkward.)
Fandom found me friends. Fandom found me community. Fandom raised me in the bits of my life I couldn't admit to any of the adults around me. But honestly, fandom's job was done the moment it gave me access to queer texts, queer narratives I never expected from canonised media. I could go home from school, ferret my pendrive from its hiding place, and just spend a couple hours every day reading about Sirius & Remus raising Harry, Clark & Lex driving to the ocean, Jack & Daniel wandering alien sands. Queer people! Not defined/restricted by queerness! okay fine, cis white dudes, primarily. but that's a fandom problem, and I was used, anyway, to all my English-language media being about white folk. Queer POC still blew my mind in 2015, desi queers still do. Queer people! Who can pronounce my name maybe?!
If you'd told me at 15 that I could read published books that had queer people in them... Well. And again, fandom did that work for me as well. That's how I discovered queer lit beyond, like, Oscar Wilde. Fandom recc'd me Maurice & Mary Renault & Sarah Waters.
I usually conclude this kinda spiel by saying fandom helped me find love, and that's true, but only in a roundabout way each time. The first girlfriend I had was the girl at the beginning of this story; three years after we broke up, I met @filianoctis and immediately told her Renault stories: the novel, first, and then fic. Yes and no, basically. But fandom let me imagine it, in all the stories of queer adults buying groceries and making beds, drinking beer and raising kids. Desire I knew I had the first time I wanted to kiss a girl but a future was harder to imagine. The first time I told a girl I loved her, the 2009 decriminalisation was four+ years away. I had no queer adults to turn to; I wasn't entirely sure adults could be queer. Nothing in my experience suggested it.
Except fanfic.

Case X1743: Unresolved XFilesXMen Movie
By minisinoo
On Fanfiction.net
Status: Complete; 20,967 words
Summary: X-FilesX-Men the Movie crossover: In 1996, Mulder and Scully investigated a case wherein a teenager reputedly pulverized the wall of his high school bathroom while at his senior prom ‘with red beams that came out of his eyes.’
My thoughts: Really cool crossover. I like how Scott's foster family worries about him.

Note to self that I really need to make a post about minisinoo's refusal to use angst as a tag for serious trauma in fic, because I have thought about it daily for the last decade and a half.

hey! do you know any good scott summers/logan fics/writers? thanks!
Sadly, anon, I don’t think I am the person to ask; it wasn’t ever a ship I was deeply into when I read X-Men.
I think the only Scott/Logan fics I have bookmarked are by ELG. I remember liking Minisinoo’s Scott fic back in the day, but I think that was all gen and/or canon pairings only.

Which two of your favorite fanfictions are twilight if i may ask?
The one that I wholeheartedly recommend and that is objectively really great is Cowboys & Indians by Minisinoo. It’s all about Leah Clearwater and Jasper becoming friends and going on a roadtrip, and is really textual about the metaphor of vampires vs werewolves not being about that. (Hint: it’s about race.) I seem to remember the author self-identifying as Native but a quick google isn’t turning anything up and I don’t want to speak to that effect? Anyways this is my go-to example of fanfiction as transformative fiction. It also has a brief one-shot sequel called The Star Quilt which is equally as nice.
The other one is Luminosity by Alicorn, which is a rewrite of Twilight in the style of Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, which was extremely big for a time. I don’t actually enjoy MoR (I feel like it’s too condescending towards its audience???), but I enjoy this. Theoretically it presents a Bella-As-Rational character, but I’ve always felt like it presented more of a Bella-As-Agent character. She’s not fundamentally different character-wise, but she is always consistently making decisions that impact her fate. Sometimes in ways that have consequences! (Really, really horrific consequences!) There is a twist at the end that knocked my socks off that the author would go there.
#anyways those are my two favorite twilight fics#and two of my favorite fics overall#both are explicitly transformative of the source material#i will talk more about the twists in luminosity if requested but also they're good to experience without spoilers!#Anonymous

Do you know of any fics that are like well written canon compliant, early days CxEdxEs? Like No Longer Alone (RIP, pour one out for ACOA ending the chapter before Edward came back) or Prelude in C?
Seriously! And I’m assuming you have ACOA but if you don’t, I do; send me a DM. I never did find out who it was who ran the author out of fandom on a rail but it made me want to punch some folks. I hate fic reccing because I’m a bad reader? Sometimes fics mess with my head if I’m writing something similar and so I don’t read them. And I also am convinced that I am always the last person to know anything so if I know about it, everybody does? So, two authors I’ll recommend that I assume that of course everybody’s read, are @jessicanjpa (jessica314) and Little Obsessions . Jessica has a phenomenal sense for the various dynamics that disrupt C Es Ed that I agree with 150%, and they are spread across over a dozen fics in the Tale of Years series so you can go crazy with them. Obessions has only a handful of Twilight fics, tiny one shots to short novellas, but every single one of them is just spot on and she has an eye for literary detail that blows me away every time. I assume anyone asking this question has read Mackenzie L, but if you have not, that’s another good stop to go next. Her long fics are LOOOOOONG which is a particular fascination of mine. I view fic writing like interval training for writing and one thing I was trying to get a handle on slash am still trying to practice is pacing and plotting--when I'm much over 100K I start to get antsy, and that self-expectation affects how I think about others' fics as well. Which is entirely on me. Her long fics, which are typically over 250K, are very indulgent and any individual chapter moves the ball very little; for that reason I usually rec her shorter pieces. Her works are to a one gorgeously written, though, and I find I don’t mind going “Wow I just read 5,000 words that was basically just Carlisle in his head looking at Esme.” So. Highly recommend; you'll be lost a good long while. Some shorter recs:
No Esme, but “This is My Beloved Son” by minisinoo is a gorgeous retelling of why Carlisle turned Edward. It’s one of my frequent re-reads. “Six Interruptions” is a true oldie which predates me. It’s a six-chapter piece in which each of the Cullen kids walks in on Carlisle and Esme. Beautifully written and contains one of my favorite Edward observations of Carlisle ever in all of fandom. Anyway, the three authors will keep you busy for the better part of a year or two, and some others sprinkled in. I don’t have oodles of followers, but if other carlesme folks want to reblog and chime in, we’ll all be grateful for the recs!
