[’Ventura, ventura, space people’ is chanted when contacting a UFO.]

Souma-san’s songs are as bewildering and open to interpretation as usual! However, this isn’t the first song in ‘Fictions’ to be about looking back on something (gestures to ‘Hiraeth’), and this song evokes SO MUCH nostalgia. I think it’s to do with looking back on something after it’s been lost, and just remembering that, along with the pains with it (hence the scream that SCARES ME EVERY TIME but works so well). The title and repeated ‘Ventura, ventura, space people’ tie the album off with a surreal, ‘Fictions’ feel. This song is looking back on the small things in life; glancing up at the sky, the cool night air (two of my favourite things)-- back to a simpler time.

In ch348 Deku says “I can’t imagine wanting to share the same heart and mind as [All Might], and I would never want to hurt someone I love.” When the chapter first came out, some people were saying that line could also be translated to Deku wondering why, if Toga wants to be like him, doesn’t she try to act like him since he would never wanna hurt his loved ones. I was wondering if there was any truth to that?

I'll just translate the whole line.

僕もオールマイトのように強く在りたいと思った ぼくもオールマイトのようにつよくありたいとおもった boku mo OORU MAITO no you ni tsuyoku aritai to omotta "I thought* I wanted to be strong like All Might." (Note: By "I thought" he just means "I do have thoughts like this" or "I have thought this before." He's not saying "I thought this but now I realize that was wrong.")

"同じ"になろうとする事が心を充たすのは分かるよトガヒミコ "おなじ"になろうとすることがこころをみたすのはわかるよトガヒミコ "onaji" ni narou to suru koto ga kokoro wo mitasu no wa wakaru yo TOGA HIMIKO "I get how trying to become 'the same' fulfills the heart, Himiko Toga."

でもじゃあ何で…心も同じになろうと思えないんだ でもじゃあなんで…こころもおなじになろうとおもえないんだ demo jaa nande...kokoro mo onaji ni narou to omoenainda "But, then I can't*...I can't think of trying to make my heart also the same." (*Note: Literally "jaa nande" means "then why," but what Izuku is really saying here is something like "no matter what" or "I don't get that.")

僕は好きな人を傷つけたいとは思わないよ ぼくはすきなひとをきずつけたいとはおもわないよ boku wa suki na hito wo kizutsuketai to wa omowanai yo "I don't think* 'I want to hurt the people I love.'" (Note: "I don't think" here means "I don't have thoughts like that" or "I don't share that thought.")

I think what those people were probably talking about was the "jaa nande" in sentence #3. I can see where they get that translation, but ultimately I don't think it's accurate. It's just a misunderstanding that the implied subject pronoun in sentence #3 is "you (Toga)" when it should be "I (izuku)." In Japanese, it's often considered impolite and sometimes nonsensical to speak like you think you know someone else's thoughts. The grammar used here, particularly the "to omoenainda," heavily implies that Izuku is talking about his own thoughts, not that he's wondering why Toga doesn't think like that. It's not accusatory in tone either.

So the short answer is, there's truth to their statements in that it's easy enough for a non-native speaker to interpret that meaning here, but there's no truth to it being all that accurate to what was actually said in Japanese.

始め (An introduction to this blog)

こんにちはキャサリンです！！はじめまして！！

シンガポールです！！私は勉強日本語四年.

So now we come to the English part (I am very slow at typing on my Macbook - I really need to really work on it.) I am thinking of sharing my journey on getting better in Japanese- so in case why I named this handle in particular, so this is inspired by the special exhibition art from the anime Haikyuu which has a kanji to associate with the volleyball player’s style (Like seriously please guys watch Haikyuu as it is so inspiring)- so two of the characters which I loved- Kita and Osamu, which I will give the kanji of it

北〜さん: 丹念 (tan'nen)：Meticulous, careful, detailed, with great care (Fitting because his quote -'I am built upon the small things I do every day, and the end results are no more than a byproduct of that.' is my guiding light both personally and in my language journey)

治〜さん：満たす (Mitasu) : To be full, to be satisfied; (I have a very very soft spot for Miya Osamu which I will talk about another time, but his philosophy of searching for something that is fulfilling always resonates with me, but he also adds that hunger is key to finding new things)

So this blog title I called it: 丹念を満たす, meaning to satisfy with great care I feel is the journey which I went through the highs and lows, and perhaps I can track my progress in actually excelling in Japanese

Hence my journey is simply starting per se 😅, I am not perfect in all means and I really really hope I will get better even if it is one small step.

So I hope you enjoy me rambling about my challenges and triumphs here.

brought my family to this japanese ala carte buffet restaurant during cny to have dinner together. we ordered yee sang in addition to all the unlimited food we can eat.. because it’s a cny tradition. XD

we ordered so much food, from sashimi, tempura, salad, grilled food, etc. these are just some that i remembered to take photo of. the service here is alright, but it is slow due to the crowd, so gonna be patient, and plan your order so that your waiting time is minimize. staff are very patient and helpful though.

food taste okay overall, some very nice, so not so much, but it’s quite balance for a buffet i guess, and given the price they charged as well, it’s pretty fair and as per expectation. it is great to come in a group so that all the dishes can be shared, and it’s fun to dine in a group, but it could be also noisy due to the crowd. reservation is highly recommended as the place is really popular.
