HELLO ME AGAIN!! I decided to give my mane six a redesign.. (as well as technically cutting one.)

So for those wondering why I switched out Confetti Surprise for a dragon/pony hybrid named Scorching Coals.. well. I wanted more diversity between the characters. We already had an earth pony who focused on making people happy (Sweet Sorbet), so having Confetti Surprise felt.. off. Like I was just trying to force two versions of Pinkie Pie into one story. Not to mention having two earth ponies while having a variety of the rest of the cast just felt repetitive. Like we have an Art and Hazel the bat pony, Midnight Aurora the unicorn and Spiderweb Obsidian (who is very obviously a crystal pony now), and then.. just. Two earth ponies?? It didn’t feel right. So I decided to have an earth pony/dragon hybrid!! Which I am very happy with. I’ll write more lore on her later, but for now just know I might refer to her as ‘Coal’ for short!!

Spiderweb Obsidian is a unicorn originally born in the crystal empire to two unicorns (more on them later), before moving to Canterlot with his siblings. They were sent there by their father to study magic at Celestia’s school. However, Spiderweb is uninterested in the study of magic, and is often seen skipping his classes. He hears about Art and Midnight through the grapevine, but overall pays them no interest until Midnight stumbles upon Spiderweb while he’s trying to cut class once more. They have a small debate before Spiderweb turns away and leaves. Eventually, he runs into Art when he’s come to visit Midnight. The two talk, and eventually find an appreciation for one another for the arts. While Art prefers painting, he admires drawings and works of fashion as well, which Spiderweb seems to have in spades. The two become quick friends, despite Spiderweb’s insistence on staying distant, and eventually the duo becomes a trio!!~

CHARACTER

So, if you couldn’t tell based on the last post, Spiderweb Obsidian is based on a concept for a pony version of Error Sans from the UTAU community. His cutie mark is based both on his name and his desire to weave works of art in clothing and tapestry. Despite his lack of imagination, he often draws the works of art that he sees. Art also helps inspire him to create new designs instead of drawing the same ones over and over again. Spiderweb obtained his cutie mark when his mother was teaching him the art of sewing. Spiderweb immediately took to it, like a fish to water, and gained his cutie mark by completing the very scarf that he wears.

FAMILYYYY

Spiderweb Obsidian is part of a large family. His parents are Astral Thunder (male, unicorn) and Diamond Lotus (female, unicorn.) He has two siblings. An older brother who is yet to be named and designed, and a younger sister named Vivace Onyx. Both are unicorns. Astral and Diamond live in the Crystal Empire, and were married by arrangement. Astral wanted his children to bear extreme magical ability, and thus join the ranks of powerful unicorns like Star-Swirl, Gusty the Great, and Starlight Glimmer. (Technically Twilight Sparkle too, since nobody here believes she was an actual alicorn, just a very powerful unicorn.) However, none of his children seem to gain a cutie mark related to magic. Despite this, however, Astral forcibly sends his children off to Canterlot to study and grow into powerful sorcerers.

Spiderweb is a momma’s boy in every sense of the word. He loves Diamond Lotus with all his heart, and writes to her constantly. Despite Astral’s attempts at interference. Spiderweb still works on making scarves, and sends them to his mother whenever he completes them.

Astral Thunder left a bad mark on Spiderweb emotionally, and the two refuse to get along. Both are very stubborn and very eager to turn to violence as a solution. Both refuse to see from the other’s point of view, though Astral is *very* in the wrong, and both want the best for their family, whatever they believe it to be.

Vivace Onyx is an average younger sibling. Spiderweb is annoyed by her antics constantly, but he supports her interests and does his best to care for her.

The unnamed brother is essentially Spiderweb’s role model. He admires how strong the brother is and how well he seems to deal with their unruly father.

PERSONALITY TIMEEE

As said before, Spiderweb is an antisocial, stubborn, and often rude pony. However, he refuses to tell a lie, which makes him perfect for the embodiment of Honesty. Unfortunately, this can lead to many confrontations, as unlike Applejack, who tried to take a polite manner to telling the truth, Spiderweb does not hesitate to insult those around him with harsh words. He does this with a confident air, and as such, people tend to look to Spiderweb for reassurance. Like a popular girl, essentially. He can often read people like a book, which leads to him finding their darkest insecurities and crafting better insults.

When it comes to people he cares about, however, his truths are far less harsh. Even if they come in the form of backhanded compliments, it is Spiderweb’s way of saying ‘I don’t want to lie to you.’

CONCEPT FOR A PONY AND STORYLINEEE

Meet Flawless Echo. She’s inspired by Sapphire Shores and Rarity!! She’s an earth pony with a knack for fashion. She also attempted to mentor Spiderweb Obsidian during his time in Canterlot, though he refuses due to fear of how his family will react.

Flawless Echo considers herself a student of the Great Rarity, who created the Carousel Boutique. She works very hard to do her very best. One day, however, she writes to Spiderweb, pleading for him to come visit and take some lessons from Flawless. Spiderweb hesitates again, but now that he has the group to encourage him, he agrees and sets off for Flawless’ boutique alongside Art and Confetti Surprise, despite Spiderweb insisting they don’t need to go.

Flawless greets them with excitement, and even introduces them to her new assistant, Honeycomb Lace (I’ll post her shortly). She is confused as to why Art and Confetti are present, but both insist they’re here to make sure Spiderweb doesn’t chicken out of his dreams. She leads them around before eventually pulling Spiderweb to the side and admits to the truth as to why she called him back here. While she has been inspired by Rarity for most of her designs and overall has succeeded by imitating them to a degree, she’s suddenly come to a painful realization. She hasn’t been making any fashion statements. Everything she’s been doing has simply been a copy of Rarity’s old trends and styles. Despite Spiderweb’s insistence that the designs are different enough, Flawless proclaims that any similarities aren’t good enough, and that she has to come up with new designs herself. So she enlists Spiderweb’s help. Spiderweb does help for a while, but soon enough, Flawless begins to wonder if these designs are good enough for her. Sure, Spiderweb’s creations are wonderful, but they’re not hers.

Honeycomb Lace seems to be trying her best to encourage Flawless, but she continues to point out the similarities, despite how hard Flawless is trying to avoid them. Spiderweb begins debating with Honey before she lashes out and starts to tell Spiderweb that he isn’t original either, and that his designs could very well be copies of older ones. Spiderweb grows angry at this, saying it doesn’t matter. He never knew of those older designs, and even if he did, there’s nothing wrong with taking inspiration from a work of art. All that matters is that you stayed true to your original self and design. Tweaks can be made along the way if you’re unhappy with the final product, but that doesn’t mean it always deserves to be trashed.

Flawless, inspired by this speech, agrees with Spiderweb. She begins releasing designs that, despite her original concerns of them not being original or creative enough, are adored by the public, who call them ‘creative’ and ‘inventive.’ She admits to them being inspired by Rarity’s work, and that each design has a bit of her legacy in it. The crowd loves it, and Flawless feels as proud as she did when she first began designing clothing. She offers to make Spiderweb her assistant, but Honeycomb grows angry, telling Flawless that she is her assistant first. Flawless then agrees, and fires Honeycomb. She then offers the job to Spiderweb. And with some encouragement, he agrees.

There would also be a period in-between, where when Spiderweb is working on a design and beginning to doubt himself, Art and Confetti are there to lift his spirits and encourage him to continue forward. Art is the one who actually makes Spiderweb’s speech first, to which Art is very proud that Spider took his words to heart.

INTRODUCING SPIDERWEB OBSIDIAN’S FAMILYYYY!!!~

No, I did not get enough sleep last night while drawing these horses ;D

From left to right/up to down, we have Astral Thunder (father), Diamond Lotus (mother), Vivace Onyx (younger sister), and Alexandrite (older brother).

Astral Thunder is Spiderweb’s father, and was kind of inspired by Endeavor’s personality. Though since this is still kid’s stuff, I’m not going to go *too* deep into details. Those who know, know. Regardless, Astral Thunder is a very stubborn colt, who travelled to the Crystal an empire to study magic. He even attempted to become a sorcerer similar to Sunburst in the original show. Like him, he was unsuccessful. Astral refused to acknowledge this failure, however, and began trying over and over again. But he was never strong enough. Astral then decided that he would attempt to make his lineage well known by being the parent of a powerful unicorn, who would overtake the legends of old and become a modern-day Starswirl. Astral knows a variety of magic spells, though is not as strong as most unicorns who studied magic like he did.

Diamond Lotus is Spiderweb’s mother. She is a very kind and gentle soul whose talent is jewels. She’s able to identify a fraud from a real gem in with just a glance. She even got her cutie mark by finding an assortment of gemstones and using her magic to style them in the shape of a flower! As such, Diamond was the one who named her children. Though Astral wanted his children to have more star-related names, since they were often associated with excellent magic-users. She managed to convince him, however, and now all of her lovely babies are named after the things she loves, as they should be. Diamond isn’t as experienced with magic as Astral is, and spends most of her time working at a jewelry shop selling items to ponies in the Crystal Empire.

Vivace Onyx is Spiderweb’s younger sister, and the youngest of the children. She is also the most rebellious of the group. Astral had high hopes for Vivace when she was born, believing that the third time would be the charm, and if the other two failed to become powerful magic users, then surely, she would. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Vivace got her cutie mark when she was listening to rock music, and shortly after, she began playing some notes on a toy instrument in an attempt to recreate the music. Diamond saw this, and was immediately worried. She even tried to hide her cutie mark from Astral for as long as she could. Astral eventually found out, however, and grew very disappointed. It even got to a point where he blamed Lotus for ‘giving them the wrong cutie mark.’ Vivace loves her mother dearly, and while growing up, tried to convince her to leave Astral. She failed, unfortunately, but as a reminder of Diamond, her mother gifted her the bracelet she wears on her hoof.

Alexandrite, our final contender, is the oldest of the children and the first born. He’s Spiderweb’s brother, and often acts as the role model for them. There isn’t a lot to Alexandrite just yet, but you’ve likely noticed his broken horn, and that’s what you’re here for. Alexandrite lost his horn while in Canterlot with Spiderweb. During an incident at the school(I haven’t decided which yet, but I’m leaning towards an unreformed changeling attack), Alex tried to cast a very powerful spell. Unfortunately, it backfired, and Alex lost control of the spell. Combined with the attacks of the changelings, Alex lost his horn in battle. Ever since, Spiderweb has held nothing but hatred for the changelings. Even the reformed ones. However, Alex insists that these bad apples aren’t going to ruin every other Changeling, and has been attempting to convince Spiderweb of this.
