Alfie's End of Year Rec List 2023

Out of 447,090 words and 141 total fics, this year I wrote a whole 224k and 78 fics, which is a lot more than last year. I wrote for 10 different ships this year, including 3 new ones. Yay for progress, I guess.

Anyway, to celebrate a rather productive year here at the_oncoming_stormageddon's AO3 dashboard, I've decided to compile a list of all of my favorite fics that I would reccommend :D number three will shock you!

In a shocking turn of events, I lied, sorry. This is about my graphs. It's always about my graphs. All graphs are up to date as of 12/21/2023, and there isn't even a missing word somewhere that has to be accounted for!

(Did I type all of this up, realize I had another fic to post, and then have to go back in and fix everything? ...perhaps)

Anyway. Let's start with Taylor Swift.

As always, "Other" corresponds to fics with titles from other artists, "Non-Album" refers to titles from Taylor Swift songs that aren't on an album or are unreleased, and "None" refers to titles that weren't from any lyrics. Orville Peck and Maisie Peter were the big contributors to the "other" category this year. The second graph shows the percent of the number of fics, while the first graph is the combined word count. Also, I did have 1 fic with an If This Was a Movie title, and I categorized it under "Speak Now TV" instead of Fearless TV. Yell at me about it in the comments if you really care, since it's technically incorrect.

Last year, I had a big Fearless slice because of the Hey Stephen series, and it was kind of surprising to me to see how much I slowed down in doing those, with Fearless only having 4 fics to its name. The disparity between the number and word count of the evermore was a little odd to me, until I realized that my longest fic ever (Tuesday Night at Olive Garden, a destiel murder mystery) was named after an evermore song. One thing that did not surprise me was folklore only having 1 fic, because that is my least favorite album.

So...the destiel thing...

The SPN hyperfixation took hold of me in Feb/March of this year and has not let go yet. Looking at my all-time graphs (where its about 33%/40% destiel/solangelo for word count), I didn't think it was that bad, but plugging in the numbers for just this year...uh, yeah. It's that bad. Sorry.

I had a really strong streak of posting solangelo every month until March hit. Again, destiel hyperfixation in visual form. This year, I wrote lokius (L/MMM, from the show Loki) and sterek (DH/SS, from the show Teen Wolf) for the first time. I also posted destiel (C/DW) for the first time (the bad destiel fics of middle school alfie are staying in locked docs where they belong).

As expected, I had a bit of a drop-off in the summer months, but it was surprising for me to see that it never went back up after school started again. Last year, I had a huge spike in September, October, and December, but this year stayed relatively mellow. Next year, I'd really like to see which trend I follow monthly.

Anyway, that's the end of the graphs I have prepared for you (I will spare yall from the more complicated ones). Next year, I'd really like to start finishing up some of the unresolved fics and series I have (mostly solangelo ones that got drowned in the destiel flood). I'm doing my first ever big bang (for the Professor Layton fandom), so katriana (KL/EP) will make it onto my graphs for next year, as will destiel and solangelo.

OC RAMBLE - Smith HSR

Mmm been having the brain itch for both Smith and HSR.

I was struggling to do any AUs for her but suddenly then the hyperfixation hit me all at once. Brainstorming is tucked under “read more” as to not flood people’s dashes-

I don’t think she’d come from any of the known planets, instead a desolate one deemed uninhabitable that her people were able to live on thanks to the 𝐆𝐈𝐅𝐓’s protection. Similar to her main verse, the 𝐆𝐈𝐅𝐓 is rarely welcomed with most viewing it as an infection similar to mara, if not something worse. Ironic seeing how the 𝐆𝐈𝐅𝐓’s method of immortality helps prevent madness from occurring in those it cares for.

The 𝐆𝐈𝐅𝐓 itself is strong enough in her main verse to be an aeon but, for the sake of power scaling, I think I’ll hold off on that for now. Perhaps an amalgamation related to the Remembrance or a strange entity unrelated to the paths. Strong but being an unfathomable thing, it’s mostly in the background with people not knowing much about it.

Overall her story would translate nearly word for word; someone blessed by the 𝐆𝐈𝐅𝐓 who lived in her community for centuries up until her community ran out of the rare materials needed to finish a project she was invested in. With her spirit and determination burning, she took off on her own in order to collect said parts but along the way she got stranded on a random planet. Knowing that most feared the 𝐆𝐈𝐅𝐓 and viewed her people with disgust, she hid in the wilderness or slums while slowly amassing the organic parts needed to make her look more like a local species. Eventually [SOMEONE] showed up and took the gremlin in. Then over time realizes her real home was among her new friends since the 𝐆𝐈𝐅𝐓 will always be there where she goes.

That someone being whoever is interested in plotting 👀

I can see some plot points of her having to run away from those that want to exterminate her (out of fear that she’ll spread the “infection”) or those who want to study her for the 𝐆𝐈𝐅𝐓’𝐬 eldritch properties and immortality. Then maybe a situation later on where her brother manages to find her and tries to bring her back to their planet since “he knows what’s best for her.”

Also her being an absolute glutton for all the new types of food she gets to try across the universe. People will be thinking her gut is a black hole with how much she can eat.

Ooooo and her sometimes swapping out body parts for new ones she finds/builds on all the planets she travels to. A way for her to adapt to the places she and her companion(s) venture to. I can see her damage type changing so this could be the lore reason for it. Her path would probably be fixed to one but indecisive on which one to pick. Destruction? Abundance? Elation?

Man. The brain rot is real for this tiny, wretched menace.

Yup! I appreciate people taking time to read and let me know what they thought, plus comments are so few that it really doesn't take much time to respond to them. AO3 refuses to notify me when someone has commented, though, so sometimes it takes me a while to notice... ^^;

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Oh, for sure my unpublished VLD fix-it fic. As far as published stuff goes, probably Worth While.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I think it's a tie between What We'll Find and Here To Stay.

None currently, but I have in the past :) It was extremely amusing, tbh.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Mmm, yes? No? I guess it depends on your definition -- I've definitely written smutty scenes, but I'm a huge fan of suggestion and favor suggestive descriptions of things associated with the characters in question (like, sunlight stroking tree branches or the sun sinking down over the forest for Eöl/Aredhel) over explicit descriptions (and not just for smut, but for pretty much everything -- descriptions of things just straight up as they are tend to bore me), so -- idk if that counts!

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Nope! I have a strong dislike of them, and I always filter them out when searching for fics myself.

None that I'm aware of.

Again, none that I'm aware of.

Nope! The most I've done is weave in my sister's or a friend's same-universe OCs (with their permission, of course) as background characters, to enrich the worldview/environment.

It changes based on my mood/hyperfixation at the moment, but I think this one goes to Ulquiorra/Orihime purely on terms of longevity and intensity of obsession XD

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I really, really, really want to finish 6, but my drive for Bleach still hasn't returned to its pre-manga ending levels yet and I doubt it ever will. I also really want to finish my VLD fix-it fic, just because I enjoy what I've done with the last chapter and really want to get that last chapter published... I just need to write all the other chapters that come before it, first XD

16. What are your writing strengths?

I... have no clue lmao. Characterization? Descriptions? I write as though in a trance, so I have very little recollection of what I've written after I've finished/posted it lol.

Quantity, regular writing/posting, consistency, finishing projects before starting up three new ones, being completely at the whim of the hyperfixations and allowing them to buffet me around as they will X_X

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

If I'm decently knowledgeable in the language or know someone who is and could translate for me, and it makes sense with the characters/universe, sure! Most of the fandoms I write for don't really have language barriers among their characters, though, so it's very, very rare.

Oof, who knows? Unpublished, probably... hm. Tolkien? Published, I'm pretty sure it was Dragon Age: Origins.

Ahaha, I don't really have one. Like with my art and my cosplay, when I look at it, all I can really see are the imperfections, which is why I avoid reading my own writing once I'm done with it ^^; (unless I absolutely have to; to remember where I left off in a long-fic, for instance)

OKAY SO—

Speed racer, right? All of us love him. I’ve been hyperfixated on Speed racer recently, and hear me out-

Speed racer is autistic! He is definitely autistic! Why? Because I said so, and it makes me stupid happy!

He totally has a chewing stim with his ascot! And his helmet helps deafen his sensory input whenever things get too overwhelming. It also feels really good since he probably likes weighted things (he def. has a weighted blanket, just saying) Same thing with his gloves!

He also vocally stims via by humming! He also does echo race car engine noises by humming as well! His humming isn’t usually attached to what he’s feeling, but he hums more whenever he’s happy or upset (meltdown/sensory overload). Most of the time, his humming is monotone, but when he’s excited, he’ll start echoing the engines.

He also flaps his hands! Either open-handed or clenched tightly into fist. His flapping is not associated with any emotion whatsoever. He’s feeling bored? Flappy hands. Feeling really excited/happy? Flappy hands. Feeling upset? Flappy hands! Feeling mad? FLAPPY HANDS— He also clenches his fist really tightly in order to feel that good pressure and hugs himself sometimes. (Pops used to hug him, but stopped because he was too afraid to snap his son’s back-)

Automobiles and racing are his special interest/hyperfixation! He absolutely loves the way racing makes him feel, and the feeling of speed and the wind blowing against him is just MMM-

Also the mechanisms of cars is another hyperfixation of his, too! He doesn’t know that much compared to Sparky, but he loves infodumping and chatting about it to him while they hang out in the garage!

Speed isn’t too comfortable about telling other people he’s autistic. He has his anxieties about how other people would react if he told them. Speed doesn’t really exactly have a good experience with telling other since he’s been bullied about it before. Even though he knows his family and friends support him, he still feels this way.

Relating to the paragraph above, Speed’s outgoing persona is very physically exhausting to him. He does enjoying talking to other people and going outside, but afterwards he needs to take a break by himself or else he’ll have a shutdown.

Speed has a very strong sense of justice. That’s why he’s willing to fights criminals and stop crime. He also has hyper empathy. He has very strong feelings towards animals, so he can’t bring himself to actually hurt animals. He just loves them too much (and I mean c’mon, who can say no to Chim-Chim?) Though, it’s much harder for him to relate to other people emotionally. It’s not that he doesn’t care, it’s the totally opposite actually! He just doesn’t know how to express it physically.

The Mach 5 is sort of his comfort object (or...er..car?) It keeps him grounded. It’s steering wheel also feels really nice since he likes the texture of it. Also it goes really really fast which feels amazing! Though sometimes, he gets his buttons mixed up, since he forgets which button does which.

it started from watching a youtuber i used to like play yakuza 0, n it was a really interesting start, but he never finished it! so i watched two best friends play it/a no commentary playthrough, and i fell ALL the way in love

MMM im gonna go with the new protagonist, ichiban! he’s so different from the others in the series; he’s passionate, expressive, unwaveringly loyal to his friends, and most of all, he’s an underdog! like there’s something remarkable in everyone else’s stories (kiryu’s freakishly strong, majima’s INCREDIBLY wild n chaotic, yagami’s a brilliant lawyer, etc.) but ichiban? he was just a lackey, and he was satisfied being one for a long time! also he’s a gamer and we need more gamer protagonists /hj

there’s someone i REALLY don’t like in the new game but it’s spoilery so i’ll go the safe route n say sagawa from yakuza 0. dude was extorting money from majima n practically held him prisoner in sotenbori, bro. i get that there’s some moments where he’s humanized but overall he’s such a DICK

UHHhh in japanese, adachi is voiced by the same VA for solid snake, and he does a “the safety’s still on, rookie” bit later on and it HAS to be a reference to snake and mgs1. the voice actor for ichiban in japanese is also the same VA for nishiki, kiryu’s best friend who had a koi tattoo. ichiban has a koi-dragon. there’s a japanese legend that if a koi can swim its way up the river, once it gets to the top, it becomes a dragon. nishiki never got to become a dragon, despite trying his best, but ichiban’s tattoo is about rising up against all odds and becoming that dragon... eventually.
