FB memory of the day... Text below and photo under the cut just in case you don't like surgical scars. Nothing gruesome I don't think...
__________ From 4th Dec 2019
So I used to have this mole. I'd had it since I was a teenager. Turns out it had been hanging with the wrong crowd and after a MoleMap confirming it was gathering strength it got cut out back on the 5th November. Turned out it was a REALLY bad crowd and was in fact melanoma. They wanted to cut out more. Today I got a call at work saying they had a cancellation, and could I make a 2pm surgery time. Why yes, yes I can! (Because I'm all in favour of getting rid of the bad crowd and getting gnarly looking scars).
Shout out to my brother, for driving me around, and my workmates who would have had to pick up my slack while I reorganised my life (and were my backup taxi drivers), and also to Hubs and the boys, who have to do everything for the next couple of days and also put up with me being unshowered and whining because it hurts.
This is why we slip, slop, slap and wrap. Because we didn't when we were kids.

Had to have a biopsy on my face today (sunspot). If you have moles or sunspots that change colour, get bigger or the texture changes (eg was smooth and then goes scaly or itchy) it's always good to get them checked out. . Dr told me 1 in 25 people in Auckland get melanoma & just cos I have Poly blood it doesn't make me safe due to being half Caucasian - the caucasity!! 😂 . Better to be safe than sorry people! Slip, slop, slap & all that & maybe something stronger than the 3SPF on Mono'i lol!! . Ps I've been getting checked since I was a teenager & so far I've had to have had 4 moles removed so definitely worth checkups! . . #LoveYourSkin #Molemap #Biopsy ☀️#MelanomaAwareness #Mole #Sunspot

Living in New Zealand: Slip Slap Slop Against the Sun's UV
Thanks to New Zealand’s latitude, its closeness to the sun in summer (a real thing, see here), its cleaner air and the lower ozone levels, the UV radiation from the sun is very strong in summer in this part of the world. There is a high incidence of skin cancer and it is common to have your moles checked (sometimes mapped) to catch any that might become a problem.
Though I grew up in England and didn’t even go abroad until I was 18 (a trip to France), or get on a plane until I was 20 (when I went to New Jersey for a year), I thought I should have my moles checked and went to a clinic in Christchurch. I love this graphic in the waiting room:
I had one suspect mole (1989 lying on the beach at Durdle Door on a windy day in summer?) and the doctor recommended it be taken out, so my doctor did (Molecheck charges $270 for the procedure and my GP charges $150).
I’m now writing this with the mole gone leaving some stitches that will be taken out tomorrow. Hopefully, that’s it!

A reminder to check yourself for suspect moles, get a mole map done if you can afford it, and get properly checked around once a year if you live in high skin cancer areas.
Don't know what you're looking for? Have a quick look through this link:
Skin cancer (most types) is/are really easy to treat if caught early, but a complete bitch to survive if it's diagnosed too late.
Moley Moley Moley
Patient: So what do you call this thing (growing on me)?
Wayfaring: Well for now we are going to call it “neoplasm of uncertain behavior” and when the pathology comes back we will give it a more specific name, but I think it’s a squamous cell cancer.
Patient: Neoplasm of uncertain behavior.... sounds like a description of my kids.

Health apps: Super or Scam?
We all spend lots of time on our phones. Whose to say we can’t spend part of that time improving our health? There are a variety of smartphone apps out there focused on health. The question is, how do we tell the good ones apart from the rest? Here are some key things to keep in mind when selecting an app.
First, you should keep security in mind. Using apps can give people access to your phone and information, so you want to choose apps that have confidentiality guarantees. You also want to pick apps that will give you reliable information and not just useless messages! WorldHealth.net gives us a great list of apps that are recommended by doctors! (Go to https://www.worldhealth.net/ forum/topic/847/ for more information about all of these apps.)
AllergyCast by Zyrtec gives information about local allergen levels, to help you plan your day during peak allergy seasons.
NHS Quit Smoking is the best app for quitting smoking!
For help with good dental care, try OralEye or Time2Brush (this one helps you teach kids how to have good habits when it comes to their teeth!)
LoveMySkin’s MoleMap is recommended if you want to keep track of odd moles and know when to seek help from your doctor to prevent skin cancer.
Pregnant? Try My Pregnancy today, a free app that helps track all the things you need to be doing while you’re little bun is in the oven!
Once the baby comes, you can use Baby Connect to monitor and document everything you or other caregivers do for your little bundle of joy!
There is even a specific free app for diabetics called My Glucose Buddy that helps keep track of glucose levels, insulin administration, and carbohydrate consumption!
