to clarify this because i've been asked: when I say "particular genre of crank", I'm not saying that a lot of these people aren't experts in their fields, or that a space elevator as a technology is impossible, but rather that a lot of advocacy about the concept is downplaying the very real hurdles to get there and focusing instead on grand sweeping potential applications.

this is kind of the norm in space advocacy, and groups like the referenced International Space Elevator Consortium - a US-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit advocacy group, not any kind of standards body - aren't necessarily scams or anything, they're just the usual kind of futurists who've been saying "this will happen in the next ten years" for the last fifty years.

"we can build an earth based space elevator" is a great headline until you see the forty asterisks with stuff like "if we figure out how to synthesise enormous amounts of idealised sphericalcowene" "if we figure out lightweight reusable radiation shielding" "if we can figure out how to stop it from colliding with Literally Every Satellite" "if we can solve the high-tension cascading failure problem" "if we can make it resistant to monatomic oxygen, the atmosphere's horniest chemical"

i generally dismiss space elevator people as a particular genre of crank but i think they're onto something here
