By the time I got to the interstate it was already too late. I looked in the back seat and saw that my wife and son had succumbed to the Virus.
“Daddy, why don’t you pull over. I feel the need to stretch my new legs.”
“Please, Darlin’. We could use a break.”
“No. No. No. I will not let my wife and son be swayed by some Slut Virus.”
“Daddy, it’s already too late. Look at my boobs, Daddy. No boy would have boobs like this. I could smother a black cock between these melons.”
“Hey, I don’t want no daughter of mine talkin’ bout no darky dick.”
“But Darlin’, I already told Sydney here how amazin’ black cock can be.”
“What?”
“I didn’t want to tell ya’ but I been screwing Ned Thurston for a while.”
“That porch monkey down on the Bayou. That son of a…”
“Don’t be cross with him now. I sought him out.”
“What?”
“I got tired of makin’ love to a minute man.”
“You godless whore.”
“Daddy, I ain’t been a girl long, but I know no woman deserves to be treated like that.”
“What’d you say?”
“I’m sayin’ stop the car you ignorant redneck. Mama and I will find our own way. Com’on Mama, let’s hitch our way to Ned’s place. I hear he has a son.”
“Bright idea, Sweetie. Stop the car you ignorant backwoods racist. Your daughter and I got things to do.”

WalMart Supercenter
A Rumpus Original Poem by Erika Meitner
God Bless America says the bumper sticker on the racer-red
Rascal scooter that accidentally cuts me off in the Walmart parking lot
after a guy in a tricked out jeep with rims like chrome pinwheels tries
to pick me up by honking, all before I make it past the automatic doors
waiting to accept my unwashed hair, my flip-flops, my lounge pants.
The old man on the scooter waves, sports a straw boater banded in blue & white,
and may or may not be the official greeter, but everyone here sure is friendly—
even the faces of plastic bags, which wink yellow and crinkle with kindness,
sound like applause when they brush the legs of shoppers carrying them
to their cars. In Port Charlotte, a woman’s body was found in a Jetta
in a Walmart Parking lot. In a Walmart parking lot in Springfield,
a macaque monkey named Charlie attacked an eight year-old girl.
I am a Walmart shopper, a tract-house dweller—the developments
you can see clearly from every highway in America that’s not jammed up
on farmland or pinned in by mountains. I park my car at a slant in the lot,
hugged tight by my neighbors’ pickups. I drive my enormous cart
through the aisles and fill it with Pampers, tube socks, juice boxes, fruit.
In the parking lot of the McAllen Walmart, a woman tried to sell six
Bengal Tiger cubs to a group of Mexican day laborers. A man carjacked
a woman in the parking lot of the West Mifflin Walmart, then ran
under a bridge and disappeared. Which is to say that the world
we expect to see looks hewn from wood, is maybe two lanes wide,
has readily identifiable produce, and the one we’ve got has jackknifed itself
on the side of the interstate and keeps skidding. The one we’ve got has clouds
traveling so fast across the sky it’s like they’re tied to an electric current.
But electricity is the same for everybody. It comes in the top of your head
and goes out your shoes, which will walk through these automatic doors.
In the Corbin Walmart parking lot a woman with a small amount of cash
was arrested for getting in and out of trucks. A man stepped out of his car
in the Columbus Walmart parking lot, and shot himself. I get in the checkout line
behind a lighted number on a pole. The man in front of me jangles coins
in his pocket, rocks back and forth on his heels. The girl in front of him
carefully peels four moist dimes from her palm to pay for a small container
of honey-mustard dipping sauce. In the parking lot of the LaFayette Walmart,
grandparents left their disabled 2 year-old grandson sitting in a shopping cart
and drove away. Employees in the parking lot at the La Grange Walmart
found a box containing seven abandoned kittens. I am not a Christian or
prone to idioms, but when the cashier says she is grateful for small mercies,
I nod in assent. Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison. The Latin root of mercy
means price paid, wages, merchandise, though now we use it as
compassion shown to a person in a position of powerlessness,
and sometimes forgiveness towards a person with no right
to claim it. God is merciful and gracious, but not just.
In the Walmart parking lot in Stockton, a man considered armed
and dangerous attacked his wife, beating her unconscious.
A couple tried to sell their 6-month-old for twenty-five bucks
to buy meth in the Salinas Walmart parking lot. We who are in danger,
remember: mercy has a human heart. Mercy with her tender mitigations,
slow to anger and great in lovingkindness, with her blue employee’s smock
emblazoned with How may I help you? Someone in this place have mercy on us.

Tell Congress to Pass the Captive Primate Safety Act
UPDATE (5/5/25): The Captive Primate Safety Act has been reintroduced in Congress by Reps. Mike Quigley (D-IL), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Julia Brownley (D-CA), and Nancy Mace (R-SC) in the House of Representatives, and by Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) in the Senate. Its new bill numbers are H.R. 3199 and S. 1594.
In nearly half of all U.S. states, some form of private ownership of primates as pets is still allowed. The dark and dangerous world of the primate pet trade in America was thrust into the spotlight in 2024 with the release of the shocking documentary Chimp Crazy. The film tells the unbelievable story of one chimpanzee caught in this disturbing subculture and exposes the misguided, and at times criminal, nature of the industry. Despite a patchwork of permitting laws across the country, there are no federal protections in place to prevent the kind of egregious abuse depicted in Chimp Crazy.
Primates kept as pets across the United States are frequently sold away from their mothers by inhumane breeders when they are far too young, causing lasting trauma to both the mothers and babies caught up in this cruel and unethical trade. These highly intelligent, emotionally complex animals often suffer from inadequate diets, inappropriate living conditions, and extreme psychological stress from being kept isolated from other members of their species. Human homes are not designed to meet the physiological needs of non-human primates, who require large natural habitats with access to the outdoors, including trees, climbing perches, and other enrichment materials.
Keeping chimpanzees and other primates in human homes, forcing them to wear human clothing, and feeding them an unhealthy human diet of sugary soda and fast food is abusive and irresponsible behavior that is far too common in the world of exotic pet ownership.
Chimpanzees and other large primates are also incredibly dangerous animals to keep as pets. Once fully grown, they are extremely strong, and the stress of being kept as pets can cause them to lash out, endangering the lives of humans in their vicinity. In the past 30 years, there have been at least 300 cases of people being injured by non-human primates kept in private captivity.
Thankfully, members of the United States Congress are working on legislation to crack down on the abusive primate pet trade. The Captive Primate Safety Act would stop the private possession of these animals by prohibiting private ownership and interstate or foreign commerce of non-human primates. The Act defines ‘prohibited primate species’ as any live species of non-human primate, including species of chimpanzee, galago, gibbon, gorilla, lemur, loris, monkey, orangutan, tarsier, or any hybrid of such species.
Now that Chimp Crazy has exposed the disturbing realities of the primate pet trade, it’s time for our lawmakers to act and push this crucial legislation forward.

Image ID: First image is a photo of four different books of various colors and sizes. The books have been stacked on top of each other, and the titles on their spines have been arranged so they can read as four lines in a text or poem. The titles consecutively read: "Monkeys on the interstate", "Iguanas In Your Home", "All My Patients Kick And Bite", and "Wild Animals I Have Known."
The second image is a screenshot of tumblr tags by user "desruc". Their first tag reads "ohh probably hundereds have already mentioned this but that is called 'spine poetry.'" The next says 'in finland we call it 'pinoruno' and public libraries tend to post them on social media often." End ID.

@maldonadonco ... okay three more which means three more random songs from nadine's playlist
do me a favour, arctic monkeys. i've loved this song for such a long time, and one thing i really love about it is the ominous depressing vibe that it has, casting a dark tone on the whole story without being too in your face about it. it has this mix of sadness and heartbrokenness with this hint of anger... as well as almost a bit of confusion, as if the singer believes this is destined but doesn't know why. i dunno, all of that just screams nadine. these mix of feelings that are murky to navigate through, as well as this acceptance that maybe, relationship wise, they are doomed. asking someone to give them anything aside from questions because they cannot answer it. they want attention, but not to offer anything back. i dunno.
freakin' out on the interstate, briston maroney. this is actually a more recent addition to the playlist! i like the almost strained way the vocals sound, almost forced out without quite yelling. something about the way that they do that makes me think of nadine. and then there's the actual content of the song, which (to me) reads as being stuck in this state of freaking out without being able to trace it, so much so that it becomes this state of being. apologize for not being yourself, even though maybe this is yourself. i really like the line never feeling like i'm all the way home, because it specifically outlines this idea that nadine has. no home they've ever had really feels entirely like home, even if it hypothetically should. why aren't the connections working the way they're supposed to?
suburban home, descendants. i love having punk music on nadine's playlist what can i say. there is no deep analysis to be had on this song, it's just a punk song complaining about people who are happy to just fit in with society and ask no questions. this is the kind of song i can see nadine screaming the lyrics to, because finally someone in the world gets them. it also is just a very good song and fits their worldview sooooo well.

¶ … Infectious Diseases: Human Monkeypox Monkeypox is an uncommon viral illness that takes place typically in middle and western Africa. It is known as monkeypox since it was first discovered in 1958 in lab monkeys. Blood examinations of animals in Africa later established that other kinds of animals most likely had monkeypox. Scientists also discovered the virus that leads to monkeypox in an African squirrel. These kinds of squirrels might be the ordinary congregation for the disease, but rats, mice, and rabbits can get monkeypox, as well. Monkeypox was found in people for the first time in 1970 (What You Should Know about Monkeypox, 2008). In early June 2003, monkeypox was reported in the midst of numerous people in the United States. The majority of these people got ill after coming into contact with pet prairie dogs that were ill with monkeypox. This is the primary instance that there has been an eruption of monkeypox in the United States. The illness occurs because of the Monkeypox virus. It belongs to a collection of diseases that comprises the smallpox virus (What You Should Know about Monkeypox, 2008). In humans, the indications and symptoms of monkeypox are comparable to those of smallpox, but more often than not they are less. An additional variation is that monkeypox makes the lymph nodes to swell up. About twelve days after being contaminated with the virus, a person will get a muscle aches, fever, headache and backache. Their lymph nodes will swell and they will feel drained. One to three days after the fever begins, a person will get a rash. This rash turns into elevated bumps packed with liquid and often begins on the face and spreads, but it can begin on other areas of the body as well. The bumps go throughout numerous stages before they get hard, scab over, and go away. The sickness typically sticks around for two to four weeks (What You Should Know about Monkeypox, 2008). Man is vulnerable to a variety of poxvirus infections, but only two of these, smallpox and human monkeypox, frequently produce an acute systemic infection with an extensive rash. Human monkeypox can be distinguished from smallpox only by the development of the virus or the presentation of a virus-specific serological test with convalescent serum (Chapter 29: Human Monkeypox and other Poxvirus Infections of Man, n.d). People can acquire monkeypox from a creature with monkeypox if they are bitten or if they handle the creature's blood, body liquids, or its rash. The illness also can go from person to person by way of big drops throughout long periods of in person contact or by touching body liquids of a sick person (What You Should Know about Monkeypox, 2008). There is no precise cure for monkeypox. In Africa, people who acquired the smallpox vaccine in the past had a lower danger of monkeypox. The CDC has put out guidelines setting down when the smallpox vaccine should be used in order to guard against monkeypox (What You Should Know about Monkeypox, 2008). Jointly with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration, the CDC is taking part in an assortment of behaviors to stop further spread of monkeypox and discover the source of the occurrence. They have deployed groups of medical officers, epidemiologists, and other professionals to aid with the examination, carried out widespread laboratory examination on examples from humans and animals believed to have been open to the elements to monkeypox, issued provisional U.S. case descriptions for human monkeypox and for animal monkeypox, issue temporary rules on infection control and disclosure management for patients in the health care and community surroundings, issued a direct restriction and exclusion on the importation, interstate carrying, sale, and discharge into the surroundings of particular rodents and prairie dogs (Questions and Answers about Monkeypox, 2008). Interstate 60: Episodes of the Road is a weird movie...
because I have no idea its' message.
Devil-like genie grants monkey paw like wishes when a guy asks for an answer to his life.
Sends him on bizarre adventures, leading up to meeting the woman of his dreams...
but he had a GREAT girlfriend that he had no major complaints about.
WTF is the message? It's okay to cheat if you dreamt about a girl? Like....I dunno who this was for. I think the writer wrote this after cheating on his wife...
It was fun and all. Kind of like smashing 5 different episodes of the twilight zone together. But....I do not understand what it was trying to say, in any form...
