Born to lead: “as I flick the Hun the V” idk I love that line for whatever reason. 

G-d that’s brilliant: “if you’re in trouble don’t scream and shout just call the English private school boys, we’ll sort it all out” I just think it’s silly

Dead in the water: “every inch forward and ten miles back” resonates with my soul idk

All the ladies: “rise from the bottom to the top we’re an army”  they do the single ladies dance with it and I love

The pitch: the unyielding silence after “I trust that a body can be found that would look to an expert freshly drowned?” Not the line. The silence after it. Comedy gold.

Making a man: this song is so long idk ummmmm “and they’ll see it there in writing that our bill he went down fighting” idk I like that line but the song is a roller coaster of variety so it’s not rly fair to choose

Dear bill: “even now I still miss you” and “and your mother….. is the…… same as ever” the first one is heartfelt and makes me cry, the second is funny. Good range.

Sail on boys: “lift your hearts to the horizon leave your fears upon the shore” just makes me feel inside.

Just for tonight: “some were born burning with destiny’s light but I was born to lead” all of the music going on around this line and the way it goes from chaos to falling into the lyric is just incredible

What draws you to Monty/Jean as a ship?

He’s so useless for her I think they’re so silly. There’s something like. Their relationship, like as read in the show, is such an interesting thing and I’ve talked about this before but like. They kind of use each other? But unintentionally. Like Jean kind of uses Monty to have better work, and Monty kind of uses Jean because he is indeed in love with her but in the end what they both really want is to be seen. And if they looked beyond the focus of what they can get out of each other, they might realize that the other is seeing them loud and clear. They just have such a perfect dynamic to me and again Monty is so down bad it’s hilarious

i just scrolled through this whole blog and saw a bunch of montyjean discourse so i thought I’d add my two cents:

montyjean is a valid ship. so is montlie. obviously montlie is more heavily implied but “women it’s good stuff isn’t it” and a lot of the first act is more heavy on monty x jean.

HOWEVER what i have qualms about is the people reading montyjean as a lesbian relationship. no matter what gender you interpret monty as, the ship is not two women.

honestly I think Montyjean shippers get way too much hate and we should stop policing people’s headcanons and if they’re actually not reading the media correctly we should explain nicely why.

idk maybe i’m an overly nice person and not as attached to montlie as I should be but that’s my take 🤷

hopping into the montyjean discussion. the first time I watched the show I honestly liked them but mainly because of the actors' chemistry - alex and roshani DO flirt reciprocally, or so it seemed the first time round because on the next watch I noticed that a lot of what I thought was flirting the first time was actually near-harassment from monty. and while jean seemed to have fun with it at first, it's clear now that she was only doing so to be 'in' with the men (and it's sad really what women have to put up with to actually get somewhere in their careers). but it gets to a point where monty lets her joke around with him enough to feel comfortable, to feel that there isn't actually a power gap between them, only to then hold his authority (and gender) over her when she 'oversteps'. she has to walk on eggshells in a way the men in the office don't. now I agree with one of those other anons that this makes for a VERY interesting dynamic to explore... but not necessarily romantically? there's no doubt about monty's attraction for jean in act 1 (or at least based on how alex portrays him) but by act 2 he seems to bore of her in a way that reveals that the 'attraction' was likely just objectification in the first place. it isn't that monty suddenly becomes misogynistic, but rather that his misogyny is intrinsic to his treatment of jean from the start. and I feel like people aren't getting that, and instead just seeing it as a sudden shift in act 2.

fanon is a whole other thing of course. I don't have much of a problem with people shipping whatever they want but I'm begging both sides of the argument to be a bit more nuanced with it and to consider the contradictions within the source material. for example a lot of montyjeans ignore the fact that jean explicitly hopes she'll never find a man to marry (when hester reveals she's unmarried) which I think most people read as lesbian or aroace coding. and the way around that is to see monty's gender as more fluid, which personally I don't see a massive problem with & don't get why people are so strict about it, since every single fandom does it and it IS interesting to explore gender fluidity in that time period (especially because being transmasc in that time could fester a very complex relationship towards femininity). but you also need to remember how important monty's masculinity is to the narrative in terms of how it gives him authority and allows him to be as arrogant as he is.

idk those are my two cents. I get why people get very mad at montyjean shippers because of the assumption that they're not engaging with the source material properly, but at the end of the day you can't control other people's perceptions and you also can't tell what they really think about the characters based on a short funny post. there might be more nuance there than you think. I'm not very engaged in the fandom anyway but the infighting and policing I've seen from the outside just seems a bit odd (and I don't even ship them). ok hopefully this doesn't just piss off both sides of the argument I just think that at the end of the day people will resonate with different aspects of the show and there will always be someone who sees it differently to you. no point getting hateful over it because that won't change anyone's mind

Montyjean shippers just want to ship Claire and Tash and it’s painfully obvious. Either that or they’re completely unable to enjoy a character without forcing them into a ship that makes every character completely different. Just make OCs at that point
