I was listening to an interview of Gagne's about her sociopathic condition and some of these parts really resonated with Tobias. Like her mentioning she's masking "right now" (during the interview) otherwise she'd be smiling and blinking far less, the story about how as a child she felt a pressure building up in her and when another kid who was sitting next to her annoyed her at the wrong moment she stabbed them and the stabbing made her feel startlingly euphoric, the way she was discussing empathy as something learned from society and intended to gain something from (a dopamine release/good feeling) because she doesn't understand any actions that are done by neurotypicals for no reason, her experience having to mimic her neurotypical sister to fit into society, the relief she felt when she met her husband who didn't shy away from her despite her unburdening herself to him about all of her (the bad, scary & unnerving qualities/actions/etc included)... there are a bunch of differences between her & Tobias' experiences too, obviously, but at least THESE parts were very on the nose. Especially one declaration that stood out to me: "Doing something morally unacceptable was a way to force a pop of color [in my life]" which is exactly why Tobias does anything he does. That pop of color. That derived amusement. The odd joy that follows which is the only thing he can really feel out of the positive cluster of emotions.

when talking about his celibacy (yes he uses that word): "I haven't entertained any interactions with any other females" — gave me the ick 0/10

uses the phrase "a woman's touch," to explain why women are inherently good at interior decorating(?) and that this skill is how women are able to enrich a successful man's life — side note: at no point do they talk about how men enrich women’s lives.

ryan makes a weird comment about how "you've seen civilizations built on [a man in love]" — genuinely idk what the fuck this means — but it leads into a tangent about like, men as providers and how "I would do anything for my women."

"peace is key yeah we got enough problems in the world outside the house and so long as I come back to the house and I get peace," — maybe i'm being pedantic but the way he keeps framing woman as belonging in the home is 🚩🚩🚩🚩

it might sound like a weird hangup but no really, the most we see is like two servant constructs, thats it, when they 'prepare for war' im pretty sure all you see is some lightly dressed ( ... is it just me or does their whole get up look alot like native american/other indingenous people too ... i still dont know how to feel about that- kinda adjacent to some of the sonau armor, the battery one i think??, also having that look...) hylians with spears, where the heck is all that tech?? is it implied to be all down in the mines hollowing out the underground (for no real reason either bc .... theres only two sonau left and no one else seems to want use nor need the tech otherwise there should have been more traces or soemthing left of it -unless it all just magically appeared out of nowhere in mostly prime condition while all shiekah tech jsut vaporized for bs non reasons just for it to be in tha game but oh dont you see its always been there lmao- so whats the point really????)

I know you handle all of this in stride and aren’t bothered, but I find it really troubling that somebody with a very large platform is calling out people who are vibing in the fandom with significantly less reach. 70k people are seeing these posts for the sake of “calling out” something she laughed about last week. 70k people are seeing names and handles without understanding the context of what occurred in anons saying we will be “saved” by listening to her. When you have a platform that large, you have a responsibility that is not shared by people whose reach is a drop in the bucket. It’s really irresponsible and those on the receiving end of these canva slides don’t have huge platforms of followers to hide behind when said followers inevitably hear one side of a story and come after people with small platforms. Idk. I guess I feel like that responsibility should be taken way more seriously. It feels manipulative tbh. The faux outrage about something you were laughing about last week is really something. Is it funny or is it unsafe? Are you being held accountable to the influence you inarguably do have bc you have so many followers or are you constantly being attacked? Are you baiting people and then getting angry that people respond to your baiting? Is it baiting or is it harmful to you? Is it amusing or are you scared? Are you the victim or are you the aggressor? Are you admitting to gaslighting people and then getting upset by the reaction you receive? If you’re truly concerned and bothered, you wouldn’t share this bs with 70k people. If you truly felt unsafe, you would take a different approach. It’s all irresponsible and highly manipulative.

since its thanksgiving, im just gonna offer the headcanon idea i know we're all thinking about today: hcs for extended family visiting the curtis' house for the first time and they're very passive aggressive doing that nice but mean southern thing and Pony (having moved to NY in my mind and being the progressive king that he is 💗) is tweaking out a little but is trying to keep his composure so his brothers (and the part of the gang that's celebrating with them) can get to know the family without interruption and be able to somehow be closer to their parents in a way?? Idk but that's my kings logic, but then... they say smth about Curly or him and curly and/or the gang being there and Pony goes OFF. Like no one has ever seen him get so mad and get so VERBAL about it 😭 I feel like once the extended family leaves everyone is like THANK GOD and Pony was so confused because he thought they were chilling but in REALITY they were just as mad as him but bit their tongues because they wanted PONY to be able to feel more connected to their parents through their extended family ANDD perhaps the reason some of the extended family said smth about curly is because OUR KING was telling them off privately or smth! Idk if you mentioned this before but, I’ve been rewatching some SaSi reaction videos recently and apparently there like a lot of inside jokes that can be easily missed if you are not in the patreon or the writers room. It also seems like the ideas that Logan and Janus are alcoholics idea came from there.

Personally I don’t like those characterizations, it was funny as first bc it was more subtle and a one off, but why is it that Janus is showing up drunk it doesn’t really makes sense—unless you’re in the writers room it seems that Ms Sanders doesn’t really care about getting new audiences or retaining the free to watch ones it seems to me that SaSi turned into a secret society bs with all the peeps who are paying him. Idk if I articulated correctly but it seems that the sides are being flanderized to heck rn and idk how to feel

I also noticed the same problem you're talking about and I talked about it too. There's no doubt the characters' personalities changed and there's no doubt that this is due to Joan's departure and Mr. Sanders' inability to handle them.

And believe me, there's nothing wrong with not being able to do something: that's why experts exist. But Mr. Sanders still doesn't want to hire one. Maybe he still believes he can do everything by himself.

And maybe, he believes that the writers' room will give him all the help he needs in remembering the characters' personalities and traits. In this case, flash news, Mr. Sanders: the writers' room is made of fans. And fans (especially young ones) are:

always influenced by their own headcanons

not always able to separate headcanon from canon

So relying on them is very silly and naive and a competent writer would never let their public decide everything. But since Mr. Sanders isn't a writer (and doesn't shine for professionalism either), of course he ended up being influenced by his fans. They're fans, so they must know the characters, right?

Sigh.

The result being, as you said, flanderization. Logan is angry, Roman is sad, Patton is stupid, Janus is drunk, Remus is weird and Virgil is edgy uwu. Nuances, details, being more than one single character trait? Everything lost.

I mean, the last GRWM with Janus was proof of how little Mr. Sanders understands this character and how flanderized Janus has been. Janus, the one who was characterized by shades of gray and nuances, is now just one thing, the last one people remember the most.

Sigh.

And yes, this makes me sad and frustrated, because the potential these characters had was huge. The mere idea that each of them had not just one main trait, but multiple traits that were linked to the main one in different ways... that was interesting. That was fun. It offered a ton of great material to work with. And the nuances of their personalities were a lot more interesting than just "drunk guy, alcohol funny ahah".

But in this case, I can't really blame the fans: fans are allowed to be fans. If they want to reduce the character's personalities to a sheet of paper, that's up to them. The author should be the competent one, he should make the characters more realistic. And he should be clever enough to not give fans so much freedom into a topic as delicate as the characterization.

The Count of Monte Cristo limited series Episode 6 thoughts

Luigi Vampa arrives in Paris disguised as an Italian nobleman and the house of Villefort is slowly beginning to shake in its foundations. It's getting emotional here, guys. (Spoilers under the cut.)

The count hosts another dinner party where he introduces a newcomer to Paris, Italian Count Spada. This is no one else but the bandit Luigi Vampa in disguise. The name Spada is of course familiar to the readers of the book; Vampa claims to be a descendant of the very same Spada who hid the treasure from the Borgia pope. He says straight away that he is in Paris to find a wife and at this, Danglars's eyes light up. (So do his wife's, it's in fact her who says "are you thinking what I'm thinking". She doesn't strike me as someone who is greedy, I think it's more like her mindset is, if you can't be happy, at least have money. But then I'm a Hermine Danglars defender.)

During the party, Heloise excuses herself, but it's not the bathroom she goes into, but the count's cabinet of poisons (the same one she was so interested in at the previous party). Haydee follows her and sees her steal a small bottle. She tells the count afterwards and even asks if she did right not stopping her, but the count says it's fine.

Danglars loses no time in fixing a match between his daughter and Count Spada, so he comes to a coffee house? (idk what the place is, some sort of club?), where the fake count and the count of Monte Cristo hang out, with Eugenie and Louise, using that old line "we were just in the neighbourhood". Eugenie, who has not time for any BS, adds that "no we weren't, you specifically wanted to come here for a coffee and cake". She and Louise then go to the piano where Louise plays and Eugenie sings, while count Spada gazes at her with heart eyes. It's fucking hilarious and I'm glad that the series made a good use of Lino Guanciale. (Side note, I don't think I mentioned this, but Vampa's gf does exist in this universe, she was who lured Albert away from his carriage at the carnival in Rome.)

Spada and Monte Cristo come to Danglars's house, where he tries to interest them in investing into railways. Monte Cristo reads the paperwork but Spada just wants to see Eugenie. So he enters her room, where he catches the lady kissing Louise. They quickly spring away from each other, but he's like: "don't stop bc of me", closes the door and sits down. So there you have it, not only are Eugenie and Louise confirmed lesbians, Vampa also supports them.

Marquise de Saint-Meran arrives to witness the signing of Valentine's marriage contract. She's widowed now (presumably the marquis died of natural causes) and is a no-nonsense grandma who loves her granddaughter. I really like her characterisation.

Monte Cristo knows Valentine doesn't want to marry Franz; she likes him, he's a good guy, but her heart belongs to Max. He sets out to help her, bc nobody should be robbed of their love (I don't remember the exact words but it was something along those lines.) It's through Caderousse that he finds out about Noirtier being responsible for General D'Epinay's death. Not sure how Caderousse has all this knowledge, but I suppose having run an inn he would have heard a lot of gossip. Monte Cristo comes to visit Noirtier and has a talk with him (well, not talk but you know what I mean; Valentine tells him how to communicate with her grandad). And so the marriage signing ceremony is interrupted by a written confession (written by Barrois) from Noirtier. Franz reads this and bows out. He remarks that at least he found out his father died in a duel and it was not an assassination.

Heloise poisons the marchioness and frames Valentine for it. Valentine gets arrested. The marchioness planned to leave her whole fortune to Valentine, and Valentine knew it, so that would be a motive. I've not had any major complaints against the show so far, but this seems to me a bit nonsensical: Valentine doesn't even defend herself. Like she says nothing in her defence, not even "I didn't do it". It could be that her father advised her not to say anything, and maybe it will be revealed in the next episode, but it just felt so weird.

Villefort keeps meeting up with Boville, who is able to relay to him that Jacopo visits Caderousse. It's hard to believe Jacopo, a former smuggler, would be that careless not to notice being followed by law enforcement. I can't say yet whether this bad writing, or deliberate choice--maybe Jacopo is getting sloppy, or maybe he's aware that he is being followed and it's part of the plan?

Monte Cristo is at his most Byronic in this episode. "We're worried about you," Isabelle, the maid tells him at breakfast. Apparently the count walks a lot at night and sleeps little. The count tells her he doesn't need much sleep. It's clear, however, that he is going through a lot. I keep forgetting to mention this, but although they didn't include the hashish smoking session, the count does take some drug. He keeps a little bottle on him, and in the time of need, pours a few drops on his hand, which he then licks? I think? If any of you have an idea what this could be, please enlighten me.

One night, when he's up, he hears noise, but it's only Haydee. She asks what will happen to count de Morcerf. Monte Cristo says he is still waiting for a response from the sultan. Haydee points out that Fernand's wife and son are innocent in this, but the count says that they also profited from Fernand's misdeeds.

The count sends Mercedes a gift, which she opens at a breakfast table. It's a pair of earrings; the accompanying card just says "gratitude". Mercedes doesn't want to accept them (bc a married woman accepting a gift from another man is obviously sus) but Albert assures her that the count is just that generous. So she puts them on. Later, Fernand asks about them, he thinks she has been spending money, so she tells him the truth that they were a gift from Monte Cristo. This is when he slaps her.

So I know many of us have not been happy seeing Fernand slap Mercedes in one of the trailers. But I think the way the series builds up to it, it makes sense. Fernand has noticed how the two of them look at each other and he is suspicious. I mean, he's right. It was not right of him to slap his wife, but he is correct about there being something between them. And is it that hard to believe that a guy who had no qualms about framing an innocent man, and who betrayed Ali Pasha, would be capable of slapping his wife? That's my take on it. But I understand if you still have a problem with it.

The count and Mercedes meet in a park, one which neither of them frequents. Mercedes returns the earrings and the count takes them back. This is what I meant when I said it's getting emotional. The scene brings out all the feels, though I was not able to enjoy it very much bc I kept shouting at the screen. I am. Not a fan of the edcedes ship. But as a scene between two people who once loved each other, but have gone through a lot since, it was flawless.

I worried at first that this show will focus too much on Mercedes but it hasn't. Sure, the count is still hung up on her but that's canon. Let's see what the last 2 episodes will bring.
