Lucas scribbled down his thoughts for today and sighed, setting aside his notebook. He needed to talk to somebody. That somebody… it HAD to be Ness. The blond’s fingers tapped relentlessly on his desk. He hadn’t seen him since lunch. Two hours and twenty-three minutes ago. Lucas realized he was started to pick his arm again and groaned. Ness….. He needed to talk to him…
That robot… The fire…. His arm….
Electricity sparked from his fingertips suddenly. He scrambled back in alarm. How the hell??
He suddenly remembered Claus mentioning they all had PSI... So he...did have PSI. Uncertainty stirred in him. He couldn’t wait any longer.
He grabbed his notebook and hurried out. “N-Ness!”
The capped boy was just sitting and mindlessly watching TV. “Huh? Oh hey, Lucas!”
The other ran up to him with a look of urgency. “C-Can we talk? I’ve been thinking about stuff, and…”
Ness’ face was growing red. “Uhhh… S-sure?” He wasn’t certain on what the blond boy was implying, but… Ness shook those thoughts away, no! Lucas wouldn’t be thinking about THAT stuff already…. “Let’s talk upstairs in my room, then?”
Lucas nodded sheepishly. Ness’ room was cool and calming… He followed the raven-haired boy up into the room and took a seat on the bed.
Ness closed the door behind him and sat next to him. “So? Shoot.” he gave an encouraging smile, glad Lucas was starting to open up about his problems.
“Nnn...So the fire….” Lucas started slowly. Ness’ smile faded. “Uh- no, it’s not about you! It’s…. It’s what that robot said.” He paused nervously, biting his lip. “When… it said ‘which Lucas are you?’ And it knew my name- And then it said my memories were warped by something-”
Ness got up, never changing his expression, and headed over to his closet. “Yeah, go on.” he murmured.
Lucas nodded nervously, keeping his eyes on his lap. “Is there more than one ‘me?’ And if so, is there like another you? A-And another Claus? Am I the real Lucas-” he stopped and noticed Ness standing back in front of him with a bat. He slowly looked in concern up to meet Ness’ eyes. Something wasn’t right.
Ness readied his bat, a dark grin creeping onto his face.
Something wasn’t right.
“Batterrr… up!” He reeled back and swung.
Lucas yelped and ducked quickly, the bat missing him by a hair. “Ness?!”
His friend was already winding up for another swing. Terrified, Lucas tried to scram, but was unable to get away quick enough from this blow that nailed him in the ankle. What should of been a sharp crack was substituted by a dull thud and a concerning lack of pain.
Ness clicked his tongue, annoyed. “Should’ve known that was the metal one.”
Knowing he had little time to escape, Lucas defensively pushed the other away to get by him and out of the room. Tears started to flood his eyes. First this had happened to Claus last week- but that was ‘Masky.’ What the hell had gotten into Ness?? Just a moment ago…
Ness’s soft, kind, smiling face flashed in his head. How did it go from that to this?!
It stung. Running away from the one source of comfort he had? Stung.
“Luuuucas, you don’t wanna run from ME, do you? I thought you loved me?” Ness’ voice echoed hauntingly down the hall. Lucas quickly turned and ran into the bathroom, locking the door behind him. The only thing he could hear was his own heavy breathing and the nearing foot steps. He looked around frantically for something he could use to fight with. Nothing.
He peeked out the window. It was the second floor so there was some risk… But the window was small. He froze as he heard the footsteps stop in front of the door. There was a knock. Lucas felt his heart drop into his stomach.
“Luucas? Don’t you think it’s pretty stupid…”
Click.
“...To lock a door from a psychic?”
Lucas lunged for the door knob as it turned and held it shut, using his body weight against the door. “Go away!! You’re not Ness!” he shouted hoarsely.
“I’m not?” the voice on the other side questioned. “Ha. Hahaha! Maybe! But I’ll tell you what- if you open this door, I’ll tell you everything you need to know. I know what you are, and you’re NOT who you think you are~” ‘Ness’ snickered and began to open to the door with surprising strength.
Lucas squeezed his eyes shut and clenched his teeth. “I DON’T know what you’re talking about…”
Suddenly he heard the wooden bat clatter to the ground and a short scream.
“If you move a single inch, I’ll kill you.” a voice growled.
...Claus!
“Aww, don’t be like that! How’d that make your brother feel? Well- I GUESS you can call him tha- AGHH-” A sickening crunch.
Lucas threw open the door. “Stop!!” he wheezed out a plea. Claus stared at him. He was holding Ness down to the ground in a restaining position. Ness’ arm was bent in an unnatural way.
Claus glanced down, as if just registering what he did “..Lucas, I didn’t mean to-...He was trying to hurt you…” he spoke softly.
“I… I know that.” Lucas replied sadly. He bent down slowly and removed Ness’ hat to rub his head. “Why, though…?” he brushed the bangs out of the others’ eyes. “Why?” he repeated, more choked up.
All psychosis and aggression was suddenly drained from the pinned boy’s eyes and was replaced by pained confusion and fear. “Wha-?” Tears flooded in and he started to hyperventilate. “M-My arm..! Claus, what are you-”
“Shut up.” the chimera boy hissed. “What the fuck is wrong with you? Scaring my brother like that. Tricking him. I didn’t think you were like that...”
‘He’s not…’ Lucas thought, grabbing the hat and inspected it with suspicion. Ness had gone back to normal after the hat was taken off, why would-
His eyes caught the glint of something.
“..Wires.” he muttered.
Claus looked up without moving his head. “...What?”
“There’s wires..” Lucas’ voice trembled as he turned over the hat. “There’s wires in the stitching!”
Claus’ eyes slowly widened. He grabbed the hat to inspect it himself, leaving Ness on the ground in agony. “The enemy was using this to spy on us… and probably to control Ness.” He continued to stare at it. While pondering over this, the two had come to a realization.
“The enemy knows where we live. We have to relocate.” Claus said slowly
“Good idea. But uh. Can I go to the hospital along the way?” Ness asked through clenched teeth.
Claus glanced over , guilt stabbing at his chest. He very carefully scooped him up. Ness didn’t look too happy about this but didn’t seem to be in the condition to resist.
“..Yes. We’ll go there first.” Claus finally replied softly.

It was a calm day.
It was a calm day. Well, it was supposed to be….
Ninten and Travis went off somewhere to eat out, and had dragged Lucas along to get him out of the house. This was a new ritual ever since Travis’ newfound employment at Subway provided them with money every weekend.
Claus decided to take it easy today and just lay down on the couch, listening to the sound of Ness cooking up lunch for Wyatt and himself.
Things were calm enough to rest... just for a little while. Claus felt his eyelids slowly close as he drifted into some much needed sleep.
Wyatt wandered into the living room and paused in the doorway, letting the room ‘register’ in his psionic pseudo-vision. The TV was on and playing a rerun of a show he had heard multiple times before- Friends? The volume was pretty low. Someone was on the couch but seemed they were asleep. Claus, he guessed- since the others were out and the only other one home was Ness. Oh, and Napoleon.
He crept by quietly- somewhat nervous to bother Claus. He was nice, actually. Just really quiet and… sad. Wyatt frowned. He could feel something like that always coming off of Claus. It was really bad today.
Claus’s eyes opened in an unnatural, calculated manner. His right eye flickered over to Wyatt like an animal that just spotted its prey. The other blue eye followed hazily, holding a cloudy look to it.
He sat up promptly. “It’s about time.” he spoke suddenly, in a voice Wyatt had never heard. For a moment it scared him since it barely sounded like Claus.
The younger boy stopped in his tracks. “P...Pardon?” He looked over in the direction of the other. It took a moment to realize Claus went from sitting to standing just a foot away from him...when?
Wyatt shrunk. “..Claus?” he didn’t like how quiet the other was. Was he mad?
“He’s checked out for now I’m afraid.” the same eerie voice… devoid of emotion of any kind.
“O-Oh okay….” Wyatt took a few steps back, nervously smiling. This was a weird game. He didn’t like it. “I’m just..gonna...go see Ness and-”
“No.”
“..No?”
“You can’t stay here any longer.” His voice came closer. “I’ll give you three seconds. To get out of here. Run.” the last word hinted at an emotion- some twisted cross of amusement and malice. That was enough to get the boy stumbling away. He wasn’t sure if three seconds had even passed yet but he heard the swift footsteps of Claus following him.
“N-Ness! Something’s wrong with Claus!” He cried out, scrambling into the kitchen. Wyatt’s panic grew. Ness was in the kitchen… but why wasn’t he saying or doing anything?? He ran over to the capped boy and tugged on his shirt. “Ness…!”
“What’s wrong, Wyatt? Masky’s mad?” Ness ask, voice lacking any concern at all. What was wrong with him? And Claus? Was this a nightmare?
The blind psychic started to cry. “Travis! Ninten-”
“They’re not here.” that cold voice cut him off. Just before he could start to run again, he was grabbed by the collar and picked up. Panic further spread. He didn’t want to. He didn’t want to….
“Stop…” Wyatt choked out a cry. He felt electricity starting to generate very close by.
“Pk Th-”
“Paralysis!!” Wyatt shouted and kicked himself out of ‘Claus’s grip and fell back.
Claus made a stifled grunt and fell to his side. “You. Fucking. Brat…”
Wyatt just whimpered and made his escape, running to the front door, swinging it open and bolted outside. He just hid until he could feel Travis’s energy nearing the house again. He jumped up and ran into the other’s arms.
“You okay buddy?? I felt another distress call…” his eyes traveled to the house that seemed to be fine.
“Claus-scary!…. Angry…. Ness didn’t… care..! I didn’t wanna- I had to-” Wyatt couldn’t talk properly as he sobbed out what he could of his story. Travis just hugged him tightly and motioned Ninten to check inside. Lucas stared awkwardly, he didn’t know what to say or do. What was wrong with Claus and Ness?
Ninten cautiously pushed open the door, holding his bat firmly. “Neeess? Claus? What the hell happened-” he stopped and stared down at Claus who lay stiffly on the ground. Out of batteries again? He used his bat to nudge his friend. Claus managed to turn his head just enough to look out of the corner of his eye at him.
“Mas...ked...Ma...n..” he whispered in a hushed, scared voice. Ninten’s eyes grew wide. “No… he just talks in your head sometimes right? He can’t…” he gently put a hand on chimera boy and sighed deeply, using healing psi to fix the paralysis.
“I fell asleep and dropped my guard.” Claus murmured, guilt wrecking his expression and voice.
“I can’t sleep anymore. I can’t let that happen again.”
“Wha- Dude you can’t just can’t stop sleeping! That’ll really mess with you psyche…”
Ninten’s brows furrowed with worry. “We’ll figure this out like we always do..” He murmured, rubbing Claus’ arm.
Claus just stayed silent.
Lucas cautiously walked in and approached Ness. “Wyatt’s really scared… What happened? And… What did you do?”
The capped boy slowly blinked in confusion. “I was just..? Cooking lunch? I didn’t notice anything…” he frowned and rubbed his head. Another weird headache.

Last Text post (for now)
“We couldn’t just take any of the furniture from the apartment?” Ninten complained, setting down another box. “You know why we can’t do that.” Claus replied without looking away from Napoleon, who he held securely by a leash.
“Uh, no not really?”
“For one thing; the furniture wasn’t ours.” Ness huffed, wiping the sweat from his forehead. He adjusted his new hat. Something he bought at the local store for 8 bucks. It just wasn’t the same as his old hat but… better than his last one for sure.
“It belonged to the landlord and the building itself…” Claus muttered, tying the leash to a chair. Napoleon dragged it off slowly. The bird creature seemed to have found interest in the peeling wallpaper, as he was now trying to eat it.
“And you said you didn’t want to leave behind any ‘evendens’ for the enemy, right?” Wyatt questioned with curiosity in his clouded eyes.
“Evidence, bud” Travis patted his shoulder, still proud of the attempt the young kid made.
“..Oh.”
Claus watched his younger twin slug up the stairs, presumably to his new room. Ness watched as well, but as much as he wanted to go along with the other… He knew it was best to give Lucas some space. Especially after 2 days ago…
The memory of Lucas’ sad, confused face just asking “Why?”
Ness felt his heart ache. He didn’t remember anything after Lucas mentioning the fire and…
“Hey. Earth to Ness?” His capped look-alike poked his cheek.
“Huh- Oh sorry, was I spacing out..?” Ness laughed nervously.
Ninten, of course, wasn’t buying it. “I know everyone’s freaking out over the past few weeks but… I dunno, I got a feeling things are gonna get better.” he patted his back and resumed moving boxes.
Although Ness felt a little calmer, he was far from reassured. Who was the one controlling him with that hat?
-
Lucas flopped down on the bed. Nothing was set up yet and there weren’t even any sheets or pillows on the bed yet but he was so exhausted.
He couldn’t keep living like this.
I remembered from earlier how he did have the ability to use psi. Maybe he could try it.
Lucas closed his eyes.
‘Someone… someone please help me.’
He gritted his teeth, focusing.
‘I need to know the truth. I need to know who I am or who I was. All I have is this name… I’m Lucas.’
…
Can you hear me?
Lucas sat upright quickly. That wasn’t him thinking but yet his voice…
Starting to panic, he tried getting back in focus. He was finally getting somewhere… Hopefully.
‘I can. Who are you? Where are you?’
...I’m Lucas.
‘You’re me?’ This was so confusing…
It’s hard to explain. But I don’t think you really want to know all the answers you’re looking for.
‘How do you know what I’d want?’
Lucas started to feel angry. All he wanted was some meaning to these confusing memories.
No one should have to have these…. Trauma ridden memories. I’m doing this for your mental state-
‘I want them. If they’re my memories, you don’t have any right to keep them from me.’
There was a long silence. Fear prickled at him. Did he scare off this other Lucas?
‘..Please. I’m confused and miserable all the time.’
The other’s voice softened.
‘I’m sorry- I thought… No. You’re right. I thought living in ignorance would be better. But the only way to learn from past mistakes is to remember them. Go somewhere quiet so we can talk properly.’
Lucas’s eyes flew open again. His heart was pounding. Without another second of hesitation, he headed back downstairs.
“I’m going out for just a little while” he said quickly before closing the door behind him.
Claus merely glanced over, his face blank as usual but… a hint of worry.
