When calls the heart au where you have prim-and-proper schoolteacher!reader who had no business teaching school in the back country, and then you have mounty!ghost who thinks you're a load of crap and are gonna turn with your tail between your legs when country life gets to difficult for you.
He thinks he's right when you accidentally burn your house down. He can't find you afterwards so he assumes you hightailed it out of town. Imagine his surprise when you show up the next, looking very much out together, to teach school.
He's even more surprised when a kid goes missing and you hike through the woods in your fancy dress to find him. And when you fall into a mine, he tries to ignore the flare of panic he feels as your pretty face vanishes below the ground.
And then he learns that you are here against your father's wishes and that if this whole teaching thing fails, you may not have a home to return to. He can't help but admire your grit, reminding him so much of the family he left behind all those years ago.
You flirt with each other, but you also fight like demons, drawing each other and pushing each other away in the same breath. Until one night it all comes to a head and he finally kisses you. After that it's not long till you get married(Proce marries you and your pretty little school kids are the choir)
And for some angst if you'd like: you'd barely been married a year when he goes off to war. A man comes riding back, says his name is John MacTavish, and brings news of your husband's death. You're in such a state of grief that you almost lose the baby, but, thank the heavens, he survives the birth and makes it through the night. You name him Simon, his little blonde curls and gray eyes, a cruel reminder of what was lost.

January books
I deleted most social media apps off of my phone this month. Which has left me more time to read than usual as I try to avoid the panic attacks occurring as I watch the literal destruction of my country.
Otherworldly by F.T. Lukens. FT Luken’s stories are about the only YA fic I read anymore, because they are just fun stories. I liked this book better than Spell Bound, their previous book. Solid world-building and story-telling although I could have done with a little less “cooing” about the teenage relationship from the adult characters.
Mrs. Mike: The Story of Katherine Mary Flannigan by Nancy and Benedict Freeman. I used to really love Canadian Mountie stories and younger me would have lapped this up. Unfortunately, it appears that it’s not as true of a story as the authors pretended (there may not have even been a Mike Flannigan) and that does change how I read it as an adult. The FMC being 16 for example and the colonialism. Also Janette Oak definitely lifted a whole bunch of “inspiration” from this book.
You Could Make This Place Beautiful by Maggie Smith. I’ve never been married and therefore have never divorced. I’m not a mother. And yet, I could completely empathize with the author. Her prose is lyrical and I loved how there weren’t any answers, not really, but there’s healing in our experiences. Beautiful.
Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez. It had been long enough since I’d read the first two books in the series, that I completely missed the connections and Easter eggs unless they were pointed out. Despite that, I really enjoyed this one and their complex messy lives. There wasn’t as much romance as her other books - just two characters with a lot of issues and trauma coming together, but it felt real.
The Wild Wynchesters: The Governess Gambit (0.5), The Duke Heist (1), The Modiste Mishap (1.5), The Perks of Loving a Wallflower (2), The Rake Mistake (2.5), Nobody's Princess (3) and My Rogue to Ruin (4). A few years ago, @klaineharmony recommended The Perks of Loving a Wallflower but as it was the 2nd book of a series, I held off, but something made me want to read them this year. They're great fun - a found group of 6 siblings with varying talents who rescue the distrodden around them, all mixed with romances and brooding looks. The romance is fairly tame if you come from fanfic like me, just 1-2 scenes in the main books, but the men are refreshingly without misogyny. I'm reading the 5th book now and there will be a 6th released at the end of the summer.
Wendy, Darling by A.C. Wise. I started reading this one last year and finished it this month. It started out strong, then the plot seemed to fade away. I loved the parts where Jane was in the asylum and her memories about Neverland, but Peter's character (and Jane's for that matter) weren't well developed. I haven't decided if I'm going to check out the sequel about Hook.
The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Richardson. Friend recommendation. It's a solid book, engaging story and I overall really enjoyed it, but it does deserve side-eyes for equating the plight of the blue-skinned people of Tennessee and the racism faced by Black people in the time period. The ending was unnecessarily melodramatic.
My Rosebud Boy by Rainbow Rowell. Just a short official flower shop/tattoo artist AU on the Simon Snow trilogy. Not sure I'll ever have enough tidbits of these two.
Women Talking by Miriam Toews. Friend recommendation. It certainly is A Choice to name a book "Women Talking" and have the first person narrator be a man, who interrupts and talks over and for the women, and who, at the end, I know more about than any other woman in the book.
Shark Heart by Emily Habeck. Friend recommendation. I still don't know what I think about this book.
On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Synder. I appreciated that these are little nuggets of wisdom, but I think I was hoping for just a little more practical advice.
Mexikid: A Graphic Memoir by Pedro Martin. Friend Recommendation. A fun memoir of a boy who travels down to Mexico with his family to bring back his grandfather. I've lived in Tucson when I was a kid and I have memories of crossing the border for weekends - what an absolutely different world it was just 30 years ago.
The Vaster Wilds by Lauren Groff. Friend recommendation. This book was not for me. It's supposed to be a "Hatchet" or "My Side of the Mountain" resiliance story, only in a historical context (takes place in the 1700s in Jamestown). I was distracted for pages because of directions not making sense and rivers flowing in the wrong direction and how a malnourished girl could run for days without stopping and how winter just ended in 5 days and ice and snow pack disappeared in a day. There were some gorgeous sentences and I can see why others might have liked it.
Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Bills by Judi Dench and Brendan O'Hea. Audiobook. Recommended by @eponine119. I loved every bit of this book. Their banter was adorable and I was just blown away by Judi’s memory and her ability to quote all of these passages from different plays. You could tell that she and Brendan are good friends. I listened to the audiobook and I didn’t realize until a few chapters in that it wasn’t Judi reading the book, but another actress because she sounded so much like her. Barbara Flynn’s vocal acting is superb. The last chapter is with her and Brendan and she is just a fucking delight. What a treat.
The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley. Recommended by @ckerouac. Thoroughly enjoyed. I really loved the beginning of the book, where the expats were adjusting to their new roles.
My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante. Book club book. It's the first of a 4 book series that supposedly spans 60 years of friendship between the two main characters. There was a lot that I related to: being "the smart one", having teenage crushes, etc, but the way that these two girls were pursued by men in their 20s and 30s was nauseating. uncertain if I'll read the rest of the series.

Jimon interlude
Prepare for super random brain fart. In AU circumstances, where Jace is/was in the navy and he and Simon either are together, or are getting together, Simon would purposefully mislabel Jace's military unit and rank, just to piss him off.
"Don't mind Jace, he is still on army time." "Navy, Simon. I'm N.A.V.Y."
"This is Jace, he is a navy otter." "Seal! I'm a fucking SEAL!"
"You know how to fly a helicopter? Oh, guess that makes sense, what with that Air Force training." "For the last time, I'm in the NAVY!"
Simon to other people: "That's my boyfriend, the super badass Navy SEAL. He got promoted recently to Commander, isn't he great?"
Simon to Jace: "Come on Mr. Marine Biologist, we are gonna be late for Clary's party. Didn't they teach you the importance of punctuality at Canadian Mounty Ranger camp?"

Alt-Rock Group The Bankes Brothers Share Energetic New Track “Walkin’” off ‘In Waves’ EP
The Bankes Brothers are about to light up Canada's indie-rock scene and ignite audiences everywhere. Since the release of their debut single “In Waves” in February 2023, the band has garnered acclaim and recognition across Canada and beyond - regularly showing in the Top 5 on Canadian commercial radio’s alternative charts and seeing constant support on Sirius XM’s The Verge for the past year.
Now with the highly anticipated unveiling of full EP In Waves, alongside the final track “Walkin’” - all eyes return to The Bankes Brothers for what promises to be another banner year for one of Canada’s rising stars in contemporary rock and roll, set to embark on a whirlwind tour of the UK alongside Red Rum Club.
“Walkin' is about doing your own thing - gut checking you know?”
The EP can best be described as a six-track shot of dopamine spilling over with irresistibly catchy melodies, exhilarating vocals, and joyous indie-rock instrumentation. Produced and recorded by indie legend Steve Bays (Hot Hot Heat, The Zolas, Mounties), In Waves is the culmination of the band's wide-ranging influences—from Elvis to The Strokes, Paul Simon to The Pixies—coming together in a way that defies sonic parallels, yet remains welcomingly familiar.

Ericka: No, her family were monsterhunters. She was also a cruise captain/director. She does become a lady/countess/princess by marrying Drac, but they're more about protecting their friends and family rather than enforcing law.
Alice: Well, she WAS a mountie in one comic. Not in the game though. Technically a lady since she's married to Bendy, who is lord and ruler of the Cycle. But there's...not much law to enforce.
Audrey: No, she's an animator. Closest was Wilson's offer to "live again as a god."
Stanford: The opposite actually. He has an interdimensional record.
Fiddleford: No, he used to be a mechanical engineer, started a memory wiping cult, then became the town cook.
Eclipsa: She WAS queen once but actually got arrested and frozen by the MHC.
Meteora: Tevhnically a princess, she WAS head of St. Olga's and ruled it with a force of robot guards before being reborn as a baby.
Shego: Again, the opposite. She's a villain
Coraline: No, she's a kid and possibly a paranormal investigator.
Mabel: No, she's a kid.
Lucy: Ehhhh....not really. She's the daughter of the leader of the monster community. Technically a noble Lady. She has a friendship with the werewolves and one of the few capable of controlling them, but not only is she rather misvhievious, often security in HT is less about LAW ENFORCEMENT and more about protecting people. Matter of fact, Lucy herself is actually a bit of a rebel.
Simon: Same as Lucy. He's technically a lord/viscount/prince, but he's more about protecting his family and friends rather than enforcing the law.
Bill: HELL no. He's the opposite, an interdimensional criminal. The only law enforcement he is is ruler of the chaotic nightmare rhealm.

On this date in music!
April 20th
1949 - Phil Spector
Phil Spector's father commited suicide when Phil was just 9 years old. The title of the song 'To Know Him Is To Love Him,' which Phil Spector wrote for the Teddy Bears, (the only vocal group of which he was a member), comes from the inscription on his father's headstone.
1957 - Elvis Presley
Elvis Presley started an eight week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'All Shook Up.' It went on to be the biggest single of 1957 selling over 2 million copies.
1959 - Dolly Parton
Goldband Records released 'Puppy Love' by a 13-year old Dolly Parton in the US, a song that was recorded two years earlier when she was just eleven years old. The song didn't chart.
1968 - Deep Purple
Deep Purple made their live debut at a gig in Tastrup, Denmark. Formerly known as Roundabout, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore suggested a new name: Deep Purple, named after his grandmother's favourite song (which had been a hit for Peter De Rose), after his grandmother had repeatedly asked if they would be performing the song.
1971 - 420
Five friends at San Rafael High School in California coined the term "4:20" as a euphemism for smoking pot. April 20th became a popular day to spark one up, as does 4:20pm. Fans of the Grateful Dead helped spread the phrase, the Boston song 'Smokin'' clocks in at 4 minutes, 20 seconds, and if you multiply the title numbers in Bob Dylan's 'Rainy Day Women #12 And #35,' you get 420.
1976 - George Harrison
George Harrison, who is good friends with Eric Idle, joined Monty Python on stage at New York's City Center. Dressed as a Canadian Mountie, Harrison joined the chorus for 'The Lumberjack Song.' No mention was made of Harrison's appearance, and few in the audience recognised him. The next night, Harry Nilsson showed up to perform the same feat, but with disastrous results, as he fell into the audience and broke his arm.
1980 - George Burns
84 year old George Burns, who starred in the movie Oh God with John Denver, became the oldest person to have a hit on the Billboard Hot 100 when 'I Wish I Was 18 Again' peaked at No.49. When asked if he wished he were 18 again, Burns replied "I wish I was 80 again." Before this, his most recent charting record had been a spoken word comedy routine with his wife and partner Gracie Allen in the summer of 1933.
1981 - John Phillips
John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas was jailed for five years after pleading guilty to drug possession charges; the sentence was suspended after 30 days. Phillips started touring the US lecturing against the dangers of taking drugs.
1985 - Bruce Springsteen
The charity record 'We Are The World' by USA For Africa was at No.1 on the UK singles chart. The US artists' answer to Band Aid had an all-star cast including Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Bob Dylan, Daryl Hall, Huey Lewis, Ray Charles, Billy Joel and Paul Simon plus the composer's of the track, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie.
1991 - Steve Marriott
Steve Marriott leader of Small Faces and Humble Pie, died in a fire at his home in Essex. His work became a major influence for many 90s bands. Small Faces had the 1967 UK No.3 & US No.16 single 'Itchycoo Park', plus 1968 No.1 UK album 'Ogden's Nut Gone Flake', Humble Pie, 1969 UK No.4 single 'Natural Born Bugie'. As a child actor he played parts in Dixon of Dock Green and The Artful Dodger in Oliver.
1992 - Freddie Mercury
'A Concert For Life' took place at Wembley Stadium as a tribute to Queen singer Freddie Mercury and for aids awareness. Acts appearing included; Elton John, Roger Daltrey, Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), David Bowie, Mick Ronson, James Hetfield, George Michael, Seal, Paul Young, Annie Lennox, Lisa Stansfield, Robert Plant, Joe Elliott and Phil Collen, Axl Rose and Slash.
1993 - Aerosmith
Aerosmith released 'Get A Grip' their 11th studio album which became their best selling album to date with sales over 20m. The album which featured the hits: 'Livin' On The Edge' and 'Crazy' also featured guests Don Henley and Lenny Kravitz.
2001 - Peter Frampton
A memorial concert for former Small Faces and Humble Pie front man Steve Marriott took place at the London Astoria with Peter Frampton, Midge Ure, Chris Farlowe and Humble Pie.
2020 - Willie Nelson
Stuck at home in lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic, Willie Nelson staged the "Come And Toke It" live stream (in reference to 420 day, "the unofficial weed holiday"), to support efforts to legalize marijuana and free those incarcerated for it. Other guests included Ziggy Marley, Kacey Musgraves, Billy Ray Cyrus and Toby Keith.

Physical force and threats of force were used by RCMP officers at a record level in 2020, but Mounties are also slowly implementing deterrence methods, like drawing their weapons without firing.
In its latest report, RCMP has outlined its latest "police intervention methods," a term that covers all instances where RCMP touch or brandish a weapon at members of the public.
It’s true that most of the interactions between the RCMP and the public end peacefully, but Mounties employed "police intervention options" 4,840 times in 2020 — the highest number since 2012.
Similarly, deterrence methods — such as pointing pepper spray at a subject without using it — outnumbered force methods for a second year in a row. In the coming years, the RCMP says it expects this trend to grow.
The RCMP national headquarters has placed a lot of emphasis on de-escalation, said Simon Baldwin, manager of the operational research unit. "I'd like to think that the work in the training has paid off in terms of reducing use of force. But it also shows that, by using different intervention options, it can be effective as a deterrent."
RCMP — which provides contract policing in all three territories and most provinces — has been under pressure to justify its use of force after a number of high-profile incidents, including the arrest of Athabasca Chipewyan Chief Allan Adam and the 2020 killing of Rodney Levi, who was a member of the Metepenagiag First Nation in New Brunswick.
Although the report covers 2020, it was released only in early 2022. A recent protest occupation in Ottawa, which was one of the largest police operations in Canadian history, is not covered in the report. The most common form of deterrence used by Mounties in 2020 was drawing a firearm. There were 3300 instances in which RCMP officers displayed or pointed a firearm at a member of the public without firing.
According to Corporal Nick Widdershoven of the RCMP’s national police intervention unit, “that's a very limited number of early interactions with the public.” As for when a firearm might be drawn, “we're talking about high-risk situations."
Professor Akwasi Owusu-Bempah, a special adviser to the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, said brandishing weapons still comes with a risk.
"If weapons are present, and especially if they're drawn, they could be used," he said. "It is still important to acknowledge that we are having conversations in this country about police use of force and certainly police killings," he added, noting that Black and Indigenous people tend to be "greatly overrepresented" among police use of force targets.
In 2020, RCMP officer-involved shootings were down, but a world record was set for Mountie-involved shootings — 14 deaths. That year, a RCMP officer was also shot and killed. "If you know people are shooting at officers, they are likely to retaliate," said Baldwin.
"It is a trend that we are interested in looking at with the impact of COVID, stress and things like that. I am unsure what effect it is having on the population. We will be continuing to examine this in the future."
A total of 350 people have been to the hospital after being confronted by RCMP officers in 2020. Eight Mounties were gang members in the same year. In addition, the RCMP documented three in-custody deaths in 2020, all of which were in British Columbia.
RCMP officers have been cleared in investigations into two of those in-custody deaths. One incident is still being investigated. In about half of the cases where police intervened in 2020, the subjects had weapons.
"The terms 'assault police officer' and 'resist arrest' always raise questions in my mind since they are highly discretionary," said Owusu-Bempah. "It can be something as simple as moving in the wrong direction and accidentally striking a police officer. When we examine other areas of inequality and racial disparities, it often comes in the form of 'resist arrest', 'obstruct officer' or 'assault officer.'"
According to the RCMP, 69% of subjects seen by Mounties were under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and a third were emotionally disturbed. Civilian Review and Complaints Commission for the RCMP, the RCMP’s watchdog agency, has said it has received complaints about the RCMP's "unreasonable use of force" during wellness and mental health calls.
In mental health emergencies, the largest psychiatric hospital in Canada has even called for police officers to be replaced by paramedics. The numbers suggest some big changes in the ways in which RCMP officers use force, according to criminology lecturer Eric Laming of Trent University.
Using pepper spray has declined, for example, while using tasers has risen. "The fact that more use-of-force incidents are documented as deterrent methods is always a worthwhile thing. However, based on the year-to-year comparison, he said, he does not perceive any major shift with respect to force of force frequencies.”
"As always, context and other variables of interest are relevant, and we cannot get that from just looking at the numbers." The 2020 figures do not include race-based data — which Commissioner Brenda Lucki has promised to investigate.
In 2020, Indigenous community members were involved in at least 16 percent of RCMP officer-involved shooting incidents in 2020," according to Laming.
"In any case, Indigenous communities have been impacted greatly by police shooting incidents and possibly other use-of-force interventions. However, this is virtually impossible to assess without accurate race-based data."
To place a greater emphasis on communication and de-escalation, the RCMP updated its training and its Incident Management Intervention Model — the protocol that RCMP officers follow when dealing with the public — in April of 2021.
"We're hoping to see the fruits of that, including a continued decline and increased use of de-escalation," Baldwin said. "There is always room for improvement." The figures were compiled from the force's subject behaviour/officer response database, which relies on officers entering information into the force's internal management system.
Mounties are meant to record the details of officer response incidents, including what happened, how the subject acted, and the officer's response. Details such as these are the result of each officer's perception at the time. Any time an officer uses substantial force (like punching or kicking) or a taser, a firearm, a police service dog, or a "weapon of opportunity" — any object deployed at that time – an incident report is required.
A soft physical control technique (soft takedowns, non-resistant handcuffs) that results in injury is also mandatory. After mass protests against police brutality, the force only began opening that database to the public in 2020. Those statistics covered the years from 2010 to 2019.

Two men arrested after suspected cocaine seized from a burning sailboat off coast of N.S.
Mounties say they have arrested two men – one of whom was wanted by police – after seizing 552 kilograms of suspected cocaine from a burning sailboat off the coast of Nova Scotia.
On Sunday, Quebec RCMP, as well as the Canadian Coast Guard, began searching for a “suspicious boat.”
Police say once they spotted a vessel that met the description, officers approached to intercept.
But as they got closer, police say they noticed smoke coming from the sailboat and, fire rapidly spread throughout.
According to police, as the two occupants of the boat were taken into custody, officers controlling the fire noticed packages floating in the cabin that appeared to be similar to cocaine packages seized in the past.
The two men arrested are 32-year-old Karin Marley Simons, a citizen of Antigua, and 38-year-old Aleck Villeneuve, a resident of Kelowna, B.C.
At the time, Simmons was wanted by police in relation to a federal investigation.
In a release issued Monday, police say Simons was taken to Dartmouth General Hospital for assessment where he escaped from police custody.
Both are face charges of conspiracy to import narcotics.
Villeneuve faces additional charges of importing cocaine and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

The Bankes Brothers Debut New Single “C’est La Vie”
Victoria, BC four-piece The Bankes Brothers – brothers Nelson and Morgan Bankes on vocals and guitar, lead guitarist Carson Cleaver, and drummer Gray Oxley – are readying the release of their debut In Waves EP, a six-track shot of dopamine spilling over with irresistibly catchy melodies, exhilarating vocals, and joyous indie-rock instrumentation. Produced and recorded by indie legend Steve Bays (Hot Hot Heat, The Zolas, Mounties), In Waves culminates the band's wide-ranging influences in a way that defies sonic parallels, yet remains welcomingly familiar.
“C’est La Vie,” the third single to be shared, drew inspiration from artists like Paul Simon Graceland, Talking Heads, and Little Joy to take on more of a Lo-fi character that helps distinguish the song in the collection. The Bankes Brothers approached the lyrics with a more phonetic approach to tell a story that also gets listeners moving.
