I’ve had these skates for a few years now (they were a gift from my sister), but I used them only sparingly. They need a few more upgrades for outdoor use, but I’m working on it. Thanks to @spadillelicious, and the hyperfixations in my brain, I have been out these last two days trying to learn moves… like stopping without a wall… I learned a turn-toe-stop and t-stop so far and I’m very happy about it (only fell a few times, but keep getting back up)! I plan on continuing and I’m having a blast!

The funny thing about trauma though is that one of my few clear memories from that time is feeling an urgent need to look up the lyrics to Burl Ives's Big Rock Candy Mountain (1949)

I’m currently working on a Dinah cosplay, so I’ve been practicing my skating almost everyday. The skates I’ve been using are abt 5 years old now and I’ve been wanting to get a new pair before a the con I’m going to in August. Do you have and brand recommendations for skates and toe stops that are durable for outdoors and ‘tricks’?
okay so definitely take my advice with a grain of salt and look into stuff, because i’m definitely not an expert plus there might be something put there that you like that i didn’t mention!
riedell and bont are great for both indoor and outdoor! they can be a bit pricey so it really just depends on what you’re looking for. i know riedell makes the high top skate like the stex casts wear (i believe the wembley cast uses riedell, not sure about bochum) but they can get pretty expensive. if the high top is what you’re looking for, moxi has some decent models for around 115 usd, depending on where you buy them. sure grip is also a pretty good brand, that’s what i started out with before i upgraded to bont! though my experience may be different as i’m skating for derby so my selections have been influenced by harder play. i would recommend just checking out those brands and seeing if there’s anything you like! i attached a couple of pictures of the more cost friendly slates i found on derbywarehouse! all in all the range is about $115-130 (not counting the chaya slate— they do have more cost friendly ones, just be sure to avoid the triangular plastic toe stop).

so! as far as for indoor/outdoor skating, the boot doesn’t matter quite as much as the wheel does. you’ll want softer wheels for outdoor skating as those will help you stay on a harder track without going flying because you rolled over a rock or something. anything in the 90-100 range will be better for indoors, while 80 and lower will be better for outdoor. personally i really like the atom wheels, so i’m adding a picture of two different types that brand offers that would work for outdoor skating.

for toe stops, you definitely want something you can remove and replace. most skates you can buy at places that don’t specialize in skates come with a bolted on plastic toe stop. those suck, we wanna avoid those! my recommendation, since it’s for a cosplay, would be the bionic artiste stops. they work on a variety of harder surfaces, which seems perfect!

i’m also gonna link the r/rollerskating wiki as i found some pretty good info on what to avoid and what to look into when i started skating more seriously! hopefully this is all somewhat helpful!!!

Probably the closest I'll get putting a selfie on here, but I just need you guys to see these fucking magical skates I just got. I had a really traumatic roller skating fall as a kid where I broke my arm, and I'm just now as a 28-year-old getting the courage to try it again.
I feel like I could curb stomp a man and honestly that's the kind of energy I need this summer.

GUYS! I’ve made an Instagram for my Roller Skating and Crochet!
Tumblr media
Here’s a link to my first post!
If any of you like crocheting, skating, or just enjoy watching other people and seeing their work, please give my account a follow! If I gain enough momentum over the next couple of weeks I am going to plan a big crochet giveaway and open a store with garments and patterns!
Cheers!

Oh boy it’s rough being a skater up north. Instagram is just a flood of reels from skaters in California and Texas doing cool stunts in the sunshine and we’re still stuck inside. I’m about to kick this spring in the teeth if it doesn’t get it’s shit together soon. The cabin fever is real y’all.

An ode to the moxi rollerskates I bought brand new, got custom leather toe caps and a matching skate leash for, wore for less than half an hour, and immediately broke my ankle in almost as soon as I stood up in them
Sure hope someone in or around my city buys them soon, I specifically put "probably not cursed" as the listing title
