I know it’s canon that NRC has a translation spell, but do they ever explain how people understand each other when they leave? Like they go to the Scalding Sands and Sunset Savanna for events and understand people just fine. Or are all of those events just noncanon?

Yup, we learn that there is a translation spell over NRC in the first light novel. The protagonist, Yuuya, is from Japan. There is a passage in the book which describes how the Twst characters seem to be saying something else but their words are heard by Yuuya as Japanese.

As for what happens when they travel to places outside of NRC, well 😅 we never get an explanation for that! For the native Twisted Wonderlanders, there is a “common language” that is spoken, similar to how English is often taught in schools as a second language. We see Marja (Epel’s grandma), Fleur City/City of Flowers merchants, the Harveston mayor, fae NPCs, and other characters swap between the common tongue and using another dialect or language.

I assume that most, if not all, of NRC students speak this common tongue too. Some, like Epel (Harveston dialect), Sebek (nocturnal fae language), and Rook (what we perceive to be French), can be considered multilingual. Sam sometimes shouts phrases in what we perceive as English, so he might also count. Ruggie knows a few choice phrases in 10 different languages due to the part-time hospitality jobs he takes over school breaks. He can haggle in roughly the same number of languages. We also know this from Sebek: "Different groups of fae speak different languages and enunciate words in different ways, but magically imbuing one’s voice makes it possible to communicate regardless. In modern times most people even in Briar Valley speak Common, and speakers of fae languages are somewhat rare…”

It’s not clear how Yuu, the otherworlder, is able to understand what Twisted Wonderland residents outside of NRC say. Maybe we can assume Crowley casts the translation spell on Yuu before they leave campus?

By the way, all events and most vignettes are considered non-canon to the main story! ^^ They wouldn’t fit cohesively in a since school year, especially since the main story is only up to like… mid-May by book 7?

I want there to be a twst event where a really horrible teacher comes to teach at NRC and its the teachers banding together to get rid of them so they don't ruin teaching and the learning experience for the other students

Like he's just bullying the students, throwing the overblots in their faces, making them doubt themselves, etc
