Thinking about Hawkeye going to Father Mulcahy and going through the motions of saying confessional - because even though he trusts the man as his Friend he still needs that extra assurance the man's professional oath provides, much like his own Hippocratic - while talking about his Feelings and particularly the Guilt Of Those Feelings towards yet another married man, but this time one he dare not tempt because he will not be the one to ruin such a beautiful and rare case of patient love and true fidelity in this hellhole... and even taking a bit of physical comfort with the man.

Nothing too much, nothing that would push the boundaries of the other man's celibacy vow, just the gentle reassurance of being able to hold and perhaps sweetly kiss between "forgive me father's," the embrace of Father Mulcahy's soft understanding, warm arms, and (most importantly, perhaps) private lodgings the only time and place anymore that he can safely let himself take such indulgences with another man.

Meanwhile, in the haze of enjoying the rare physical closeness of another person who he trusts not to push, trusts not to expect more than what he's comfortable offering, Francis takes the confession murmured against his lips and whispers soft penance back - hail mary's for the guilt felt over coveting a married man that they both know Hawkeye won't say, rosaries to combat the fear and shame and self-loathing that they both know Pierce won't do...

...and gentle but insistent absolution that although the guilt/fear/shame may be sins, the loving never is. Absolution that, true as it may be, they both know Benjamin won't believe.

Oh, but bless the boy for pretending.
