the west wing is the best show ever because you wouldn’t expect to come out of a hard-hitting, critically acclaimed political drama with the ultimate found family trope, right? and yet the president is a complete nerd, his wife is scary and the top in their relationship, the president and his chief of staff are Dad 1 and Dad 2, the deputy chief of staff and his assistant are in a years-long emotional affair and everyone knows it but them, the communications director is grumpy as hell and you love him so much, the press secretary is tall, hot and awesome, the deputy communications officer is the gay son and the president’s aide is the human personification of a pleasure to have in class. and they’re all family and love each other very much :)

febhyurary, day 18: shadow
"when dad was losing his mind, he stopped seeing us. when he lunged at me with that knife, he didn't recognize me. in a short moment of lucidity, he came to realize what he had done to me. after months of watching him sink into a deep, black pit, I finally had my dad back. even now, I could feel how tight he hugged me as he wailed out a thousand apologies... but it was too late. dad was sick, he couldn't sleep and could hardly eat, he lashed out at anything and anyone. his migraines only exacerbated the issue. but mum had been so absorbed in her work back then that she was hardly home to get dad the help he needed. the constant fighting they had ended up pushing her away. she didn't want to deal with dad and how he was deteriorating before our eyes. it wasn't just her; no one helped dad, they pretended nothing was wrong like they do with gammy's 'fits'. but they don't make my blood boil nearly as hot as mum. mum treated him poorly during that period, she put her work above him and above us. when dad finally snapped, she abandoned him in that house. I hated her for it. we were just kids, we had no idea what was going on. the twins don't even remember him, they don't remember how much dad loved them, or how he wished they'd stay small forever. I'll never forget his screams, the desperation in his voice when mum snatched me away. I didn't want to leave him. we locked up any aethograph of dad from that time. we didn't want to remember dad like that, we didn't want to be burdened with those memories. but there was another reason why we stored those away—in almost every aethograph, there's a shadow."

an alternative characterisation of doctor/allen that's been sitting in my brain for a little which was meant to be more faithful to the canon. It takes inspiration from the out-of-makeup version of the cast Worthikids has given, and literally every one of them, Allen looks angry or nonchalant. So I began playing on the idea that out of makeup he's the complete opposite, and there's this switch in character. For the sake of cohesion, I'm going to refer to Doctor as when he's in the makeup/costume and Allen when he's out of it. Partially because I headcanon Allen using Doctor as a way of some sort of coping mechanism.
This Allen is dead panned or sneering (as the most expressive he will ever be), I do not think he keeps the accent in this one with a normal voice. Just like my other version of Allen/Doctor, I do think Doctor as a persona was created as an outlet for Allen. I'm considering the possibility that he is simply apathetic due to an upbringing where emotional expression wasn't a part of his life. Doing theatre really acted as a catharsis for him, where he was able to release all those pent-up emotions.
But I think it's still something he'd struggle with, maybe it's just society's cold attitude to anything against the grain, which makes Allen feel the need to be this muted person. Doctor as a separate alter ego over-compensates for all of that, and I think that really shines with his portrayal in the show. He pulls this ridiculous accent, he commits himself to bits, strange classic metaphors. I think that one scene where Doctor's differentiation in voice of Doctor vs Allen especially lends itself to this characterisation. When he's Doctor, Allen doesn't exist anymore, so in truth, that is technically his *real voice*. How this differs from my previous characterisation of Allen (The one portrayed in Silence. And im gonna be honest, they're actually not that different in terms of psychology but i digress), is that he overcompensates through everything. He's this pretentious individual who can't stand being normal because he's insecure about being insignificant, so Doctor was meant to be an outlet for his ideal self. That line begins to blur as to whether that was just a persona or his most unapologetic self this entire time. New characterisation of Allen is like that because of the exact opposite reason: he's a conformist. And I would lowkey love to get my hands on some writing where there is that clash in identity rgrrhhrraaahrhr
SO NOW WE'RE AT THE PART EVERYONES HERE FOR, HOW DOES THIS CHANGE THE CESDOC DYNAMIC? I think to compensate for Allen's apathy and nonchalance, I'd interpret Cesare as more faithful to the show as well. In a lot of my writings and interpretations, Cesare still remains a very mysterious, omnipotent figure who lurks (he's more toned down, essentially). So I think Cesare & Doctor would otherwise be faithful to the show, it's chaos meets chaos, they go find awful food together and make abominations. Cesare and Doctor however, I think Cesare would act as a role model because he's so unapologetic, where Allen still scrutinises himself over every emotional indulgence he has. But then it'd make for an equally awkward situation where Cesare also distances himself from emotional connections. There's this massive potential for miscommunication and misunderstanding because none of them will take the initiative. Overall though, Allen and Cesare would still be a nice match since they match eachothers weirdness, Allen is the only one who can tolerate Cesare for long periods of time. And Cesare, he's been emotionally distant for like a millennia, I think he'd recognise that in Allen and would be empathetic since they essentially have the same mindset. Ok end of rant, now for final words. Am I going to draw this new dynamic more often? Eh probably not, but I think it's still a fun character study. Would not be opposed to doing some writing but I feel as though writing as a medium of art is not as well enjoyed in comparison to, you know, physical art. So it depends if people want it. alright thanks 4 reading if u see this.

It is always very funny to see at Tumblr-folks handling folklore analysis because it SHOWS a lot sometimes when they just take their things out of pop culture, fantasy media and Tumblr posts.
Not that it is a bad way to think or to start. Rather all these things make you appreciate the legends and myths from a modern and current point of view. When you speak of certain creatures as they appear today, you get to some conclusions... But when you present them as what the creature was always about, you prove you are a bit short-sighted or forgot to look at the actual tales.
For example I stumbled upon one post (which I won't link because otherwise I don't mind it and it clearly isn't a misinformation stuff, outside of just some biased reading) that defends the idea that the dragon in Europe always, always represented "the fear of a bad king" or was a metaphor for "dangerous political figures".
... No?
I mean, yes, in modern days, in pop culture, in its handling in modern fantasy, the dragon IS a figure of bad king, sort of, can be read as such and has been read as such (see Discworld). But... that's a modern thing that doesn't fit the actual dragons of legends. People forget that the current "dragon legend" is VERY recent.
For example the post I talk about mentions how dragons are always slayed by knights - and this somehow proves that a king can only be taken down by nobility feuding, or something. It also talks of how dragons breathes fire, presenting it as a core part of its element - the same way as it hoarding gold being somehow part of the core myth from day one (and not just a specific branch of the actual mythical theme, which is "dragons are guardians of treasure", but treasure isnt always gold).
Except... If you just take French folklore, this doesn't work. The post faults in this because among the tales is lists as part of the dragon myth - Beowulf, The Faerie Queene, the legend of Saint George, the Hobbit, Dungeons and Dragons - it lists the Tarasque legend, one of the most famous French dragon tales.
French dragons do not breathe fire, in fact they very RARELY breathe fire. All folklorists and legend experts, but also just anybody who has just looked a bit at French dragon folklore, will tell you they are water-entities who rarely have anything to do with fire per se. And they are not slain by knights - it is usually saints. "Yeah but saints are knights" will say those that are used to saint Georges. Except the saints slaying French dragons are usually either bishops or miraculous women. The Tarasque was defeated by a woman.
Not only that but French dragons weren't even slain at first. Originally they were tamed by the saints, turned into harmless pets. The whole "Let's kill the dragon" imagery came later, and made all these legends of peaceful domination take a bloody turn. And that's because the legend of the "dragon-slaying" in French folklore came a bit later, and no, French dragons were never meant to represent a king. They were meant to represent natural dangers, especially floods or drowning waters. They were deadly rivers, dangerous bogs, that sort of things - in the direct line of the Hydra from Greek mythology, whom people tend to forget is meant to embody poisonous waters, toxic bogs, nefarious marshes, stuff of the sort. Most people agree that originally the French dragon was tamed by saints (often city-building or bridge-building saints) as a metaphor for human communities taming the dangerous floods and wild rivers and hostile swamps while building their cities, their roads, their bridges, etc... Only later did the imagery of the dragon being murdered appeared, due to all sorts of changes and influences in the Church politics and popular imagery.
But to try to claim that the dragon always depicted the motif of the "bad king" is... Quite incorrect. Fafnir isn't a malevolent king. He is a greedy, cursed, malevolent dwarf or dvergr, a supernatural entity twisted by pure supernatural greed. He is an Otherworld threat, not very much human like to begin with - down to his body parts confering magical powers onto people. The "dragons" of Greek mythology are not "evil kings", they are rather leftovers of the primordial chaos. Either they are children of primordial deities from the chaotic times (Ladon) either they are agents of Olympian deities who still embody the part of chaos, disturbance and discord remaining in an ordered, civilized universe (the sea monsters of Poseidon, the snakes of Hera, the dragons of Ares), and they are a mixed up of symbolism - some are devouring sea, others are burning fire, others are deadly poison...
People who know their myths around the world won't be surprised and will just roll their eyes and say "Duh, of course" but it actually still needs to be said because a lot of people don't know it... Originally the dragon is a manifestation of natural disasters, of the elements gold wild, of the destructive weather, of the sea or the land being hostile to humanity itself. Originally the dragon is the flood, the storm, the primordial chaos. The "bad king" dragon is much more recent than you think.
It is just like the "peaceful, beautiful, pure virgin unicorn". Yes there's old if not ancient elements to prove it, and yes it is part of the myth... But unicorns still started out as bloody ugly and freakingly terrifying monsters hellbent on violence and bloodshed. They still had rainbow colored horn, but it was to eviscerate elephants.
The dwarves were dark elves, the "genie" is born out of the "djinn". The three little pigs were pixies, sirens were not mermaids, people get ghouls and zombies VERY wrong, werewolves warlocks and vampires were once one and the same...
Yes, monsters and beasts and entities of legends manifest anxieties, desires, fantasies and allegories of the human world, and quite ancient and vast ones. But it doesn't mean these entities can't change their meaning - while they might represent something now, it doesn't mean they meant something else before.
