“Mall Meltdown”

Son! Sam Monroe x Mother Reader

If there was one thing Sam hated more than homework, it was malls.

Too bright. Too loud. Too many people breathing in one place. Too many smells—cheap perfume, greasy food court air, the weird plasticky scent of escalators. He swore the tiles were sticky on purpose. Just walking through the entrance made his eye twitch.

So naturally, you took him to the mall.

“Just real quick,” you’d said cheerfully, steering your sulking 6’2” son out of the car. “New shoes. In and out. No drama.”

Sam, already bundled in two hoodies like he was entering a warzone, glared at the automatic doors like they were about to attack him.

“I’m gonna puke on purpose.”

“Uh-huh. Save it for the Crocs store,” you said, pushing him forward.

The moment you stepped inside, he started muttermuttering under his breath like a cursed gremlin—half swears, half insults, barely intelligible, but constant.

You caught a few gems like:

• It’s like being trapped in a goddamn deodorant commercial.

• If one more person bumps into me, I’m committing mall crimes.

• Do you smell that? That’s capitalism. It smells like foot fungus and regret.

It was a miracle you got him to the shoe store without incident. Sam kicked one of the displays just to be petty and flopped into a plastic chair like he was being sentenced to death.

A cheery employee approached. “Looking for anything in particular today?”

Sam didn’t even look up. “Yeah. An exit.”

You gave the poor guy an apologetic smile and waved him off. “We’ll just be browsing.”

After twenty minutes of Sam whining about laces, soles, how leather feels like skin, and why does everything look like it was made for gym teachers, you finally found a pair of black high-tops with silver eyelets and a thick platform sole.

Sam held one like it had personally offended him. “These are fine, I guess. Whatever.”

“You like them?”

He scowled. “No. Shut up. I didn’t say that.”

You bought them anyway. He hugged the box when he thought you weren’t looking.

But the peace didn’t last.

You made the mistake of passing the food court.

“Oh my god,” Sam gagged, yanking his hoodie over his nose. “Is that… tuna? Who the hell eats tuna at a mall?”

“People who are hungry, maybe?”

“They should be arrested.”

And then came the final blow: a wave of over-perfumed teenagers passed by, giggling and smacking each other with shopping bags. One bumped into Sam’s arm. Sam recoiled like he’d been shot.

“NOPE,” he snapped, spinning around. “I’m out. I’m leaving. Burn this place down.”

He beelined into the nearest store—Hot Topic, obviously—and immediately collapsed between racks of spiked chokers and Wednesday Addams socks.

You followed him in with a deep breath and a smile. “You done?”

He flopped dramatically onto one of the little cube seats by the dressing rooms, arms crossed, hood pulled down low. “I’ve seen things, Mom. Things I can’t unsee.”

“I warned you it would be busy.”

“You promised this would be fast!”

“I also promised to buy you sour candy if you survived.”

Sam paused. Slowly peeked out from under the hood. “…Sour candy?”

You nodded. “Two kinds.”

He narrowed his eyes. “And a spiked bracelet.”

“Fine. One. But it has to be under ten bucks.”

“Fifteen.”

“Twelve, or I drag you into Bath & Body Works next.”

He made a strangled noise of protest. “You’re a monster. I want that in writing.”

You offered your hand. “Deal?”

He sniffed dramatically, then shook your hand with the exaggerated slowness of someone making a dark pact. “I hate you. I hate this place. I hate humanity.”

And then, five minutes later, he was humming under his breath, sucking on sour watermelon straws, and wearing the spiked bracelet over his sleeve like a war trophy.

As you walked back to the car, he glanced at you, hoodie strings in his mouth like a kid pretending not to be happy.

“…I guess it wasn’t the worst thing ever.”

You bumped his arm lightly. “Wanna make it a monthly tradition?”

He glared. “Try it and I’ll disappear into the woods. You’ll never find me.”

But he didn’t let go of your hand the whole walk back to the car.

hi, thank you! that is the next chapter of my da longfic, the centre of all things! i put it on ice because it would have been the THIRD chapter in a row which featured the characters bantering over a card game, but i loved the characterisation in it, so i saved it as an unrelated file so i could cosh it over the head and rob it blind in an alleyway for lines for the actual Chapter 13!

Isabela had spent the time wandering the Marches, he understood. After her uncomfortable reunion chat with Hawke they'd headed up to Varric's apartments, who had greeted her with similar affection and dealt her in to the ever-present wicked grace game while she filled them in on her comings and goings, with a bit too much emphasis on the comings. Hawke laughed at her jokes and when she whistled to the barmaid for another round, gregariously offered to pay for the whole table's order. Anders stared at the table, angry. He was always angry, these days.

it's a lil nod to cole's banter line with varric in da:i as well, which i liked. but whyyyyy can i not picture these characters doing anything other than fucking, fighting, or gambling. /sob
