I FINALLY DID IT!!! SHE IS DONE!!! Meet my first Madoka Magica OC: Komoe Mimura!!!

*Her ability to grant wishes is limited to things that can be created or destroyed.

Ex: she can grant the wish "I wish I had lots of money" but she cannot grant the wish "I wish I was rich" (one implies gaining something while the other implies altering the current reality).

Ex2: she can grant the wish "I wish [Name] would break up with his girlfriend" and/or "I wish [Name]'s girlfriend died" but she cannot grant the wish "I wish [Name] broke up with his girlfriend" and/or "I wish [Name]'s girlfriend didn't exist". (1&2 implies events that can occur in the future, 3 is past tense [meaning it would have already had to happen, thus altering the reality], and 4 would alter reality).

Personality

Design Breakdown

She has a very optimistic outlook and determined personality. She tries her best to get to know everyone, and her soft voice contradicts her upbeat personality. She absolutely loves magical girls to a stalkerish extent: she's willingly gone into witches labyrinths with hopes of meeting magical girls, and has a diary where she keeps all her information on the "magical girl secret world". She's very girly, and loves feminine things: dresses, long hair, and cuteness are all things she adores. Her favorite pastimes are watching tv, sketching, and hanging out with friends. Often times she can come off as pushy or intimidating (especially to girls she scouts to be magical girls) but she genuinely means no harm, and doesn't ever realise she's acting poorly. She takes great pride in being a magical girl, and her current goal is to thank the magical girl that saved her.

Trivia

I'm not sure if I fully like the design (mainly the waistcoat thing, and I should've given her gloves) but I'm happy I managed to actually draw her. This was a very self-indulgent design (not a sona though) and so I included ungodly amounts of ruffles and pastel pink!

Underneath her skirt is layers and layers of ruffles to the point her legs are not visible, and she has a double sleeve situation (also with ruffles underneath). The teacup & saucer hat is... rough, but I loved the concept and wanted to include it! Her rabbit ears are attached to a headband which has a ribbon on it. Her soul gem is located on her monocle chain; the alternate locations were the rabbit ear headband, one of the hairtie ribbons, and an anklet. I went with heterochromia because I could not decide whether I liked the pink or purple more (I also debated on mint, but I wanted to keep the colour palette analogous), I also struggled with very light purple vs very light pink for the hair; and went with very light pink (but I'm not sure how I feel about it). Those hair flicks near the top of her head aren't real rabbit ears, but are meant to resemble floppy rabbit ears. I wanted her overall design to invoke the feeling of "magical girl" strongly, and I hope I succeeded in that!

Her magic wand shots a magic beam(?) thing from the top (between the ears) and functions like a whip; the hand-guard is based off a rapier's, and the bottom has a sphere that looks like a rabbit tail. Her soul gem features a rabbit head on top, and a clock face (sorta) as the bottom symbol. ALSO! I promise her purple eye is the same colour as the soul gem, the glass shading from the monocle makes the eye look lighter!

Her original wish was "I wish to be a magical girl!" but Inkyuu (the resident incubator) told her to pick a different wish since she'd become a magical girl regardless

She was aware of magical girls before being approached by Inkyuu due to being saved from a witch by a magical girl; she has gained an obsession with magical girls as a result

She uses her power of granting wishes to scout potential magical girls for Inkyuu

Her white rabbit theming is because she leads girls down the rabbit hole of becoming magical girls (the day I stop using metaphors and symbolism for everything is the day I die)

[Adding onto above] She has no particular love of rabbits or Alice in Wonderland, but thinks her theming is cute and so plays into it

She'd either be a mentor figure or an antagonist or possibly both

She either knows the secret of witches or if she found out about the secret of witches she'd probably be supportive of incubators (maybe even intentionally becoming a witch[?])

She hasn't been a magical girl for very long, but is very enthusiastic about it so she's fought many witches

She's very close with Inkyuu and carries him(?) around with her

Hi! I love your Fine/Quick Clockwork au and i was too shy to ask about it before but i saw your post talking about people asking questions, and it felt like a sign asdfsdf

ok first though i found the fic from your drawing of fein/fine and couri/icarus and it's literally??? been living in my head rent free i was making silly little doodles of fine and couri during class today like???? the story is so interesting and cool (im a BIG sucker for hero-villain stuff) and the characterizations are so good, especially loving the dialogue and fein's narration, it matches his voice really well

i think i've reread chapter 3 at least six?? times?? probably more. every scene is so good because they're all tense but in different ways, which makes each part suspenseful while still being unique. there's a feeling of dread throughout the whole chapter, and it's awesome. also villain fruit is everything to me...he's so slay (literally. maybe too literally actually)

So I have two questions! One, aside from obviously having different characters, did anything change between the chapter three that we got and the original idea/vision for the chapter (that you can say w/o spoilers) given that there was a 2 year gap between it and 2? And two, how common is having a power in the au's world, and how did you decide what power to give each person? of the people we know i feel like people wouldn't usually correlate fein and being a healer so it's soo interesting seeing that kind of dynamic here

thank you SO much for this. you are so kind and i’m absolutely overjoyed that you enjoy my work. i’ve said this many times before, but it bears repeating that people like you are the reason i’m still sharing my work. knowing that people other than me derive joy from what i make is everything.

anyway, to answer your questions: no, not much changed between the original concept for the story three years ago and the current outline i have. one thing that changed, though, was that i never planned on Fine himself being targeted by villains, but i since changed my mind (obviously) because the events of chapter three force Icarus to think about being a hero from a different perspective. it starts a domino effect that leads to some rather groundbreaking discoveries on Icarus’s part.

i’d say about 30-40 percent of the population has some sort of power, but very few of them are “powerful,” like Icarus’s wings. Lots of them go undetected for a long time, like Fine’s healing.

Icarus’s power was pretty straightforward. A long, long, time ago in the year of our lord 2021 (and parts of 2020 if i recall correctly), couri ran a category of 1.16 RSG called icarus, where the player would start with an elytra and a stack of rockets. that’s where his sona’s wings came from. artists started drawing him with wings and the rest is history.

about Fine’s power: Iterum readers would know that it’s quite similar to Switch’s power, but Fine’s power predates Iterum, so it came first. if you read the tags on Fine, you may notice one that reads “superpowers as a metaphor for love languages,” and, uh, weeelllll, if you read into Fine’s monologue in chapter three, think about giving vs taking, uh, you can come to your own conclusions about all that. A lot of HBG’s powers are based on their Dolorem/Iterum counterparts, if that provides some insight.

this particular drawing I doodled one day during some downtime at work. ice been wanting to try and experiment more this year than in previous years. I have a tendency to draw my sona over and over and over all in the same few poses and almost always smiling, which while I feel I've gotten pretty decent at, it sorta gets old after a while.

here's another one I drew also during work downtime. I was feeling especially grumpy that day so I figured drawing myself as such would be a good excuse to practice that...and also reference Dan Vs (which I also bought the first season on DVD back in the day ^^;)

I guess also work related (funny how I tried to avoid talking about work but here I am doing it anyway aa) is this animation I did at the beginning of this year while experimenting with toonsquid on the iPad. I wanted to see how quickly I could make a full animation and I pushed myself a bit to make it look good as possible. my original goal was to post one animation per week, however I got caught in what I will call an infinite ambition loop. basically, I ended up having ideas that way surpassed my current abilities. I'm trying to find ways to manage my own expectations and try to set more realistic goals like trying to utilize more facial expressions and different body poses. so, we'll see how that goes.

Well, first there was the Stuff at Base to deal with.

Poor Erend. He tries to brush off the squishy stuff but he is just this ... big dumb loyal marshmallow wrapped in steel and I just want to hug him.

I do love the viewpoints and moods we get from this group. Zo is ... I have a suspicion about a thing, but overall she's ... maintaining. Alva ... is probably not used to this level of setback, just because of how setbacks are dealt with among the Quen, so obviously she's entirely at sea about how to bounce back. Kotallo is moving on to the next battle because he can't mourn the dead until all the battles are done, just so he knows how many of the dead to mourn - and besides, that's his people. And Erend ... see above re: big dumb loyal marshmallow.

Zo wants to speak to me before I can do anything else? Okay. So now I get to confirm why she's so relatively calm, because that kind of thing is generally--

...okay, first? There is so much beauty in this game, even in its saddest moments, and I will bask in this until--

Yep. Relatively calm because she carries a piece of him, literally. It'll be interesting to see how that little one is raised. (And as a friend of mine pointed out, Sona's lost both of her children now. Though I guess she probably accepted that she lost Varl when he left the Sacred Lands. That's still kind of a Nora thing.)

Also like I was telling this friend of mine? It did have to be Varl, not only for thematic reasons, but for narrative ones. We needed Kotallo, Zo, and Alva as anchors to the current part of the world we're in. We still need Kotallo because we still have things to deal with as regards the Tenakth. Alva will not only be needed in terms of information about the Ancestors, but may also serve as a link to follow in the next game (assuming there will be one, but this doesn't feel like it's going to be over when we punt the Zeniths off our planet; nothing's that simple in this series). Zo ... well, narrative aftercare at minimum, since she's carrying Varl's child. And Erend? Well, he was a possibility, but he was too obvious a possibility, to start with. I mean, come on; he's a beatstick who deals with problems by charging headfirst into them. He's learning a bit of strategy now, but his death wouldn't have the same narrative weight because it's kind of expected from someone who goes into melee with Bristlebacks and who you know would die for you without a second's hesitation. Varl? He's been with Aloy since nearly the beginning. He taught her so much. He wasn't just a Rost for Beta - he was what Rost should have been for Aloy; Rost just didn't know how to be that. He tried to get Aloy to embrace life with the tribe, but he thought the only way was to separate himself from her entirely. Varl spent the last two games walking the line between "what tradition demands" and "what my friend needs", and choosing the latter every time. His world became so vast when he left the Sacred Lands. There were few enough places with narrative weight left for him to go. I've read at least one review that said they wanted to see more of Varl's character arc and that only annoys me because a) we saw a lot of it anyway and b) the only way we could have seen more of it was if it had been him as the main character and not Aloy.

(Yeah, it felt like half the reviewers at minimum would have very much preferred that Aloy be male. They don't like how bossy she is, they think she isn't likeable ... all these things that just get a pass when it's male characters being like that. I hate it.)

Okay. Let's see if flying on a Sunwing will ease my pain.

1. What’s the one thing they would save in a fire?

My sona (that's now desperately needing a name lmao) would save themself. Other than that, they'd save their computer.

3. How would they fare in a zombie apocalypse?

Namiyo (blue lock oc les goo) would start biting the zombies after being bitten lmao. Otherwise, she'd (he? they? gender is hard män) survive pretty well.

5. What’s their most useless, weirdest, or least marketable skill?

The unnamed vessel can blow bubbles with void out of their eyes. It looks disturbing and has no other value. And it stains.

8. If they were an animal, which one would they be? Which one would they think they’d be?

Namiyo thinks she'd be a scorpion. In reality, she'd probably just be a little magpie or crow.

9. Do they cheat to win or play by the rules?

My sona tries to play by the rules, until the urge to cheat surfaces. Only cheats when absolutely necessary and at least 76% sure they won't be caught.

13. What is/was/will be their college major?

Scapino would major in advertising (can you even major in advertising?). I mean, he's good at convincing people, so it's only natural. Does prefer his current job and status tho.

19. How’s their financial situation?

The unnamed vessel has geo, but it likes spending it as fast as possible, so it doesnt leave behind anything useful for its enemies to take. It shoves the geo into its eyes.

20. Who’s their go-to person for advice?

Namiyo either goes to find her father (*cough* jinpachiego *cough) or Chigiri. For non-urgent things, her go-to person is definitely Chigiri.

21. What’s one secret of theirs that could potentially ruin a relationship they have?

My sona literally has an eldritch horror inside themself. Do what you will with that information.

The unnamed vessel will never forget the moment the Pale King held it for the first time. Maybe its first memory ever, but the most painful.

26. What’s one topic they could never get tired of researching or learning about?

Namiyo doesnt play football but is endlessly interested in the sport. She learns a lot from Blue Lock's participants but also does her own research.

29. If they could change one thing about themselves, physical or otherwise, what would it be?

My sona sometimes wants to "remove" the eldritch horror. It changed their life, and sometimes not for the better either. They think what it would be like, if they didnt have it. Also, they'd like to get rid of the pyromania (that might also be because of the eldritch horror).

33. What’s the worst injury they’ve ever had?

My sona's worst injury they admit to having is when their face got sliced. The wound was shallow and so is the scar. It goes from the right side of their forehead to the right side of their top lip, across their eye. The ACTUAL worst injury is the eldritch horror. Not really classified as an injury, but the eldritch horror also has the worst injury as well as is the worst injury.

36. What’s their favorite thing about themselves?

Scapino likes his eyes. He gets so many compliments, but mainly for his eyes. 👍

my first human sona vs current

I absolutely loathe making posts like this, but the safety and wellbeing of people in the Spy vs Spy fanbase matters more to me than being in my comfort zone.  Please be aware of the user who goes by Mimi-Fox, TheMimiFox, and SpyVsFox. They used to be active here on tumblr, but when I got an uncomfortable vibe from their posts and blocked them(which was completely impersonal at the time), they began to publicly harass me, threaten to harm themself, and more shortly before deleting their account altogether. At first, I simply noticed some discomforting aspects of their content and did what I could to not have to see it on my end, but afterwards many things surfaced that revealed much more sinister and dangerous things about this person. I will detail what I can for now under the cut:

(TLDR: This artist has a history of making violent/bigoted imagery and statements, as well as being a literal nazi, no exaggeration.)

For the sake of making any sense, I will go by order of what I uncovered first. My post here was in reference to Mimi, but I was too scared at the time to namedrop them. When I had blocked Mimi’s two blogs (one which was already marked as nsfw and was following me), they began to spam posts begging me to unblock them, even going as far to tag my boyfriend and harassing him as well. They began posting about wanting to harm Themself, and I woke up the next morning bombarded with anonymous messages blaming me for making Mimi “feel bad” and pointing out unsavory things they had done that I hadn’t even mentioned at the time. I vented to a close friend about being harassed, and they decided on their own to message Mimi to stop harassing me. Mimi would not just accept that I wasn’t going to unblock them, and they started to post pictures of a pair of scissors against their arm and videos of them yelling at me. I never wish harm upon anyone, and my friend told them that I didn’t want them to hurt themself over this. They responded, stating that they were not going to harm themself… therefore meaning that they were posting immensely triggering content to manipulate their followers, and try to make me seem guilty, all for blocking them. 

(Disclaimer: If I’m not mistaken, Mimi currently identifies as nonbinary but lists “she/her” pronouns on her Deviantart. Therefore, I will be referring to her as such in this post.)

Mimi also began to claim I somehow hurt them, despite me never contacting them.

After my friend could not get them to accept that I was not going to unblock them at the expense of my sense of comfort, and at this point, safety, Mimi began to show their true colors, and started to mock me for being open about being transgender.

This is not the first time, nor the last time they've has mocked my transness, whether vaguely or directly. Before I had blocked them they made reference to the infographic I made over a year ago in response to the transphobia in the fandom, implying that it was a bad thing. After blocking them, I was informed that they were posting screenshots of my boyfriend and I’s blogs to twitter, and essentially mocking us in the same way for being out as transgender and not wanting to talk to people we’re uncomfortable with as the image above.  After deleting their tumblr account, they posted a drawing onto twitter of their transphobic oc talking to one of their 'sonas, calling me a p*ssy. This has since been deleted from what I can tell, so take that one detail with a grain of salt, if you wish. However, they have drawn the same oc calling trans men "stupid c*nts who cut off their b**bs and think they are men", and this is still up on their Telegram page, which will be shared later.

Rough Translation: “When no one asks: WE ARE GAYS! UNDERSTOOD? WE ARE GAYS !! AND TRANS! NOTICE US! TAKE US SUCH! WE WILL ALWAYS REMIND ABOUT THIS !!

Please go to an individual dialogue and calmly discuss everything: LEAVE! WILL NOT EXPLAIN ANYTHING! AND DO NOT OBLIGED! YOU MAKE US HURT !!”

Alongside this, I received an anonymous message from someone informing me that Mimi was possibly stalking us, and was posting art of their svs ocs on twitter as birds, in a very similar way to a bird au my boyfriend had made months earlier, The drawings were of their transphobic oc bullying their trans oc. After my boyfriend made a post stating that he had been drawing bird spies for months (as to avoid anyone claiming that he was somehow copying Mimi), Mimi deleted most of their bird spy art off of Twitter (They are, however, still on their Telegram… more on this later).

During this time, I received other anonymous messages warning me of Mimi; some of them informing me of their past associations with homophobia and nazis, and citing evidence on Deviantart and FurAffinity. At first I didn’t know what to make of these messages, but I found that they were being completely honest. Mimi has a long history of holding a distaste/ absolute hatred of gay people, going as far as to drawing one of their fursonas after beheading another character with pink nails and a rainbow flag bracelet. (they went from drawing gay people being murdered to drawing p*rn of us…)

These anons also pointed out that Mimi had knowingly dated a nazi in the past, and made art depicting nazis with no critical implications but rather glorifying and glamourizing them (two things that will NEVER accurately fit with nazis). Although I didn’t see much at this point showing that their previous boyfriend was a nazi (Although he definitely is... more on that later), I did notice that they have drawn their own fursona as a nazi, as well as making ocs that are nazis/SS members.

I should never have to explain why portraying nazis in any perspective other than negative or showing how disgustingly stupid their ideologies are is completely abhorrent. Mimi was an adult when they posted these online, so there is absolutely no excuse. It goes to show that they glorify the image of a vile hate group for the aesthetic (although possibly even moreso that they may believe in the ideology) over the wellbeing and humanity of every group of people who experienced violence, oppression, and genocide. I value the safety and wellbeing of all people, and I cannot sit here knowing that there is someone with such a large online following that is a genuine danger to Jewish, Roma, LGBTQ+, and disabled people, as well as people of color in the fandoms that she’s interacted with. Unfortunately, this doesn’t get any better from here.

My boyfriend and I have been receiving loads of intrusive anonymous messages ever since we blocked Mimi. It’s gotten to the point in which someone sent my boyfriend this message:

This is obviously not true, and Finn and I are left to believe that someone (possibly Mimi or at least one of their defenders) sent him this to make us feel guilty over an impersonal block. What makes this so much worse is that Finn had experienced a traumatic loss from su*c*de in the past and has been open about it online, which opens up the possibility that whoever sent this message was intentionally trying to severely harm him. Mimi has shown already that they aren’t above using serious mental health situations to guilt-trip others, so this would be a repeated pattern if it was them who sent this. 

I was recently messaged by a blog that is critical of Mimi’s art for other reasons (including their history of plagiarizing art), about reblogging my post on blocking Mimi. At the time, I declined, as I was afraid that Mimi would use that as an excuse to harass me again. However, they had reblogged from another blog criticizing Mimi (and I’m not here to discuss either of these people’s methods of criticizing them or their attitudes, as this post is solely about Mimi’s actions and their faults are in no way comparable to Mimi’s atrocious behaviour), and I discovered much more intensely horrific things Mimi has said and done. 

Starting off with their homophobia, Mimi has a history of outright despising gay people. In the most minor case, at some point in the past they had “straight pride” badges on their deviantart page. 

(Unsure why the Russian badges were highlighted in red, but that is besides the point.)

They also at some point targeted a gay artist, drawing a nasty response to their work. According to the blog that shared this information, Mimi got them to delete their account. The latter part is not 100% certain, as what I could find of that information was secondhand and anecdotal from the blog.

They drew her fursona saying this, as well (translating to “K*LL ALL GAYS”)... This does not need any explanation as to why it’s awful.

My Dean Blunt Rotation aka High Fidelity Left A Bad Taste in My Mouth

For the past 2 to 3 months, my listening habits were teetering to an end; mostly via burnout by spontaneously listening to local artists daily and less likely of a musical discovery drought, whereas my interests of a certain artist or genre hasn't found its, sort of, "eureka", moment per se. I've been feeling less enthusiastic over the things i listen to since my friends have gradually lost their flare when it comes to discovering/exploring untapped parts of the music realm. Thus, in return, my enthusiasm not being reciprocated. It leaves an empty feeling from someone who has been yearning social interaction, may it be media being latched on the topic - it's a feeling that's been guilt-tripping me ever since I was stranded in the other end of the metro. I feel closed off, exposed to the crippling loneliness the lockdown has punished us: a defacto solitary confinement in a national level. Our act of staying online is also an act of staying alive outside.

To be fair though, it's a valid move to not boomerang compliments/gripes over an art you haven't consumed due to someone's autonomy. Your able body being to consume the art you wish to finish with free time is a luxury in of itself. The art is then failed to serve its purpose to reach its goal: You have squiggly lines heading straight to oblivion rather than swirling in the earlobes of a wandering cyber nomad. We, eventually, need to find something that could help us exit, rather than escape, from capital. We, in return, do not shut ourselves from the outside. Instead, we then tend to avoid the stress of protocols and outdoor fascism; Not avoid the indoor liberalism that is eating us alive and online. It's a capital punishment we never knew we signed up for ever since the onslaught of the virus and the state. Art for art's sake is nonexistent now, always has been, it seizes to ever since we went inside. Feeding off of a holographic meatloaf coming from a glowing screen. We have a real-life Karen acting as a nightlight in our rooms.

The COVID lockdown made us listen to music — both for better, for worse. For one, it made us pass most days. You could say the same for any sort of media: film, mixed media art, or whatever pre-Covid activity that sprung up during our time in isolation. For music, however, there was an uptick of new listeners that made others Wheel-of-Fortune the fuck out of their music discoveries in sites like RateYourMusic, Bandcamp, or even Sophie's Floorboard. We've continued to expand and became more open change of opinions and be less of a jackass towards someone else's opinions. On second thought, our opinions have been catalogued, leaving more notes than actual footprints of our previous listens. Our new discoveries made new bands and re-emerging bands, bands who faded to obscurity, crawl back in the surface with newfound interest from younger listeners (ie Panchiko, Jai Paul, and Dean Blunt) and this glowing, previously unseen and unexpected overwhelming support from fans of departed artists (ie SOPHIE, MF DOOM)

For the other, we've hogged gratuitous amounts of media, resulting into losing our primary direction as to how we want to consume our media based on the preconceived notions of what we want in our art. There is goodness in becoming directionless when you think about it, but there comes a cost to our identity as music listeners. Instead, we end up widening our tangents, falling in endless rabbit holes, having zero chances to emerge from the surface. In fact, i refuse to call it a "rabbit hole" instead i'd rather call it a "pipeline" of sorts — transitioning casual music fans into a full on, different, unique versions of themselves that would define them when laws and protocols have eased in the outside world. Our act of staying online has either made most of us break our character or enliven our past selves. The music pipeline is now more apparent, stretching the norms of what was once alienated by a silent majority, but now accepted as an acceptable form of expression. The more music we are exposed to has made casual listeners stranged out or react in ways that our personality have betrayed us or deemed not as acceptable to them. Still, not changing anything that was prominent pre-pandemic. Liberal cop behavior is stronger, now more dangerous than it ever was once perceived by the outside world.

HIGH FIDELITY? NO, THANK YOU.

Imagine a situation inside of a record, pre-pandemic of course, where you do not feel like lifting a record out from the shelf, instead, you window shop just for the sake of windowshopping. Capital and media made us think that going to record shops is a semi-productive activity. The age of discovery has died ever since High Fidelity romanticized and normalized the incelage of horny record diggers. Does this movie age well, yeah sure it does, for old 90s nerds at least. But did it translate well over in the past 20 or more years of events and tragedies that unfolded in pre-9/11 America? No it didn't. It was an age of free expression, only liberals would dream of whenever they take a sip of Guinness beer in their favorite dive bar.

Mind you, over a couple of months ago, it was my only chance in seeing why this movie was the talk of the town back when it was released. There's music, yeah, and attractive leading leadies, yeah, it has everything a 90s kid would love to salivate and drop their gonads over while they watch this movie. I obviously did not live to see the movie on opening day but i could imagine the scent that came out of that movie theater with attendees donning windbreakers and The Who shirts with popcorn dressing stains on their plastic cups. If there was a Filipino counterpart to this movie, i'd bet corporate champions Eraserheads and Rivermaya would soundtrack their music over and have either Tado or have Boy 2 Quizon, but i sense it to age like milk more than it could age like fine wine due to the senseless jokes one can execute in a Cubao or Cartimar record store.

John Cusack is obviously the incel in question here: a damaged, vengeful ex who constantly fails to live his partner's expectations and weaponizes his personality over the situations that has nothing to do with his interests. I spent the entire time being absolutely disgusted over the spineless responses of John Cusack's leading character. The movie then treads on flashbacks with John Cusack's failed relationships and what he could do to move on from each and one of them. If i could stand a SONA for 3 hours then I can't stand John Cusack being the dull entry point to incel, making more reasons why you should hate record store clerks who don't give an iota of shits to someone's inviting rapport. High Fidelity is opium for massive music circle jerks who can't take a single breathe of fresh air or a single quota of touching grass. There's more targeting weak and inferior guys and hot women who dump dumb overconfident dudebros more than the actual "music recs" in the entire movie. The more I think about this movie, the more I realize how our personality is in line towards Dick, the record store being unmercifully dunked on by the movie's two leading characters. He's an angel in the world of cynical bastards, witnessing both demons pitchforking record store customers in the ass while they're purchasing the latest Sonic Youth album.

I believe that Jack Black, the dark horse of High Fidelity, has a pleasing personality more than an irritating demeanor due to this behavior in the record store. In fact, outside of the record store, Jack Black doesn't seem to take the business is your pleasure act pretty seriously. Unlike John Cusack's character he brought his obsession over involving a record in an important memory/point of his life. There is so much stuff that has happened outside of the record store, so much for Rolling Stone and NME being the bible of music at the time, endlessly christening and shilling artists that believe to become the second coming of the Beatles. The music references here however are treated as fluff than it is a mechanism that would drive the senseless plot forward. If anything, there are events pointed out in the event that doesn't have anything to do with the life of the characters.

If anything, this movie did a great job at capturing the feeling of music bros being dumped on the wayside by a mature set of characters and how their current conditions aren't perfumed by the studios' liking of having to Cinderella story the shit out of a bunch of normal record store owners. The reality is in the reaction of one's social capital being invaded and we're here to witness how those reactions panned out in 2021. This is a villainous depiction of music nerds being the salt of the earth, the bane of all media discussion, still reflective of the insufferable salt of cyberspace found in music forums like 4chan and RYM. High Fidelity is a pipeline of 90s musicology, a dreaded fever dream of an owner waiting for the decade to end, trends ossifying and re-emerged by the hands of nostalgia-savvy individuals. It was, at its time, every music-movie nerd's excuse equivalent of Scott Pilgrim VS. The World. There are memories worth remembering and cherishing, and this movie isn't one of them.

DEAN BLUNT, WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK

In the past two weeks I've been fancying myself into sitting down and listening to different projects from the ever elusive, UK-based sound artist Dean Blunt. The first time i chanced upon his music wasn't too long ago - albeit a recent one in the time of COVID - was when I randomly stumbled upon his records at a Spotify recommendations section under John Maus (yeah lol i know the implications whenever his name is mentioned) - but then i was enamored by his online presence so quickly I put everything down and dedicated an hour or two researching about this man's music.

Other than the fact that his album "The Redeemer" wasn't the best record to start off in journeying through his discography: ending up disgusted and borderline bored even and I was more likely to lambast this record's aimless, pretentious art-pop inflections. By the end of the day, it was a preference long solidified by his undying fanbase. According to his hardcore fans, the music isn't really music, evaluating it as a free form of sound art, rather than sticking to a structured and conventional cues; the genre is nullified by most analysts of the arts. The growing interest of the general public towards Dean Blunt's pranks and antics have long appealed to my tastes as a chaotic neutral individual. Pranks that are well executed to piss off UK gallery connoisseurs and entertain ironic attendees who'd shit on the art piece rather than participate in it.

More of the resources I've found about Dean Blunt online: numerous aliases and collaborations that lasted around almost 2 decades. The most notable of all them, at least for my money, are either Hype Williams, a duo consisting of Dean and frequent collaborator Inga Copeland, and Babyfather, an art performance parodizing the pirate radio culture in the UK. I have not delved enough in Blunt's body of work to evaluate everything and what i could synthesize from it. For now, I enjoyed it as a form of entertainment. Well, color me impressed because Dean Blunt isn't clowning around, he, in fact, makes blissful and transcendental music from left to right.

Dean Blunt was the only few artists that made me want to binge on their discography. His movements in his music has attracted this pesky listener who thinks that being mysterious is a plus. I mean, look at me who thinks The Paul Institute, Panchiko, and Burial are the greatest artists that have walked the face of the earth.

The most I've enjoyed from Dean Blunt's discography are his mixtapes and collaborations: preferably his Soul Fire and ZUSHI, both of which were packaged as B-sides or supplemental releases rather than major releases such as the Babyfather project or the Black Metal releases. His knack for blurring the lines between genres still fascinate me as of this writing, and it continues to amaze me how he doesn't seize to compromise his art, he's here to prove a point and it sells quite well despite the lack of direction in his music. Blunt's music has more aggressive and hazy texture than the hollow, wide, soulless structure of art-pop/hypnagogic pop released today. He creates terrains from the rubble of his country's current shortcomings. The music overlaps the actual intentions with abstract concepts, becoming deconstructed down the line. In Babyfather, noise music coincides with Blunt's amateurish rapping. In Black Metal, Blunt isolates himself along with the assisted skeletal guitar playing. Both projects throwing all tropes in a vaccum alongside Blunt, who he himself would sought to become a personification of a musical void.

FAQ and Guidelines

Alright everyone, its 2019 in the year of the lord Let’s get this thing moving!  If you would like to see your character printed in the first OC zine, this is what you gotta do:

1)  Draw your character!

They need to be drawn full-body at least once, so we can see them in all their glory.  If they have multiple forms/transformations, we would like to see that full-body too, but if you can only fit most of it, that’s fine.  While there is no requirement for poses, we have a few recommendations.

If you have a personality trait you want to emphasize, try showing it in their pose:  Maybe they’re super energetic, they might be jumping with joy, or if they’re not feelin’ it today, they may be slouching.  

One thing to be careful about is not to let the pose hide their features -- like a crybaby character huddled up in the fetal position:  We just can’t see all of them and their design like that.  

THAT SAID:  You can draw them multiple times for the page!  If you want your character curled up, draw a second picture of them!  Or a headshot!  Or 4 headshots with different expressions!  Just do whatever you feel comfortable fitting on the page -- which brings us to

2.  Page size:  

   This zine will most likely be printed on legal-sized paper, which will be folded in half.  Make your canvas size 8.55 in x 7.1 in.  The size of the actual zine will be 8.5x7, but it will be cut by hand, so just add a tiny bit extra to account for that.  Make sure that nothing incredibly important will be cut off by putting anything important on the edge of the page.  

You can fill the background with a solid color, or you can just leave it white.  You can also draw an elaborate background if you want!  Just know that if it includes other characters in the background, they need to stay in the background. your main HAS to stand out from them, no group pics.

3.  Write your character’s name somewhere on the page

If you want, you could write a description or bio as well!  Just try to keep it short.  There is no word count, but make sure your font is big enough to be legible without taking up more than about half the page.  If your character is accepted, but there is an issue with their bio, we will contact you and ask to edit it.

When you’ve completed your character’s page, send it to us through private message, and we will review it!  We can not guarantee that every submission will be accepted for print, because the stapler can only tackle so many pages.  If It Is Not Selected For Print, it will still show up in the digital bootleg.

4.  Add your name (or nickname), age, country/state, and any social media links you want to include, but limit it to 3 links (like, insta, tumblr, and twitter).

FAQ:

When are the things happening!?

We currently do not have a submission deadline, or set date to release the zine, but we are hoping to have it finished by Summer, so cross your fingers and send in a character as soon as you possible can.

Can I submit my OC for (this show/book)?

No fan characters will be accepted.  This zine is to show off original characters that are your brain childs.  Fan characters are great and super fun and can have really creative designs, but there are specific places and other more specific zines to submit them to.  Even Admin Lightning’s main avatar is an Adventure Time OC from 2011.  As much as we would love to see your gem-sona, or cuphead OC in the mix, we feel like fan characters would easily dominate the other OC’s, and we don’t want that. then again,   You COULD change them up a little bit and not tell us that it is a fan character though.  We won’t ask questions.  

What about DnD characters?

This one is acceptable because there is a lot more diversity within the DnD universe than there is in an average show/game.  That said, we know that there are A LOT of them, so we can only accept a limited number.

What about Furry characters?

Furry is a fandom, but it’s not a copyright brand.  Send us your wolves and lions and dragons!

I drew it on paper!  Can I send you a picture?

If you drew it traditionally, please please please scan it. That will keep your original quality and proportions the way you made them.  If you don’t have a scanner, please try to take the best picture possible without shadows, and without blurriness.  If you send us a picture, keep in mind that we may take liberties in editing/color correction to get it to fit with the zine.

Color vs. Black and White?

We want a mix of both!  Do whichever you want.  If it is a pencil sketch, tho, you should know that we’re gonna have to give it more contrast and it may turn out black and white.  If you do submit a pencil sketch and want it to be another color (like, make all the lines blue or something) just let us know.

I suck at drawing, but I have a good character!  Do I have a chance?

Definitely!  We won’t turn you away because you’re a beginner artist- we welcome it!  Just try your best!  We’re measuring on creativity, not skill. If You Have a friend who wants to draw your character and you write the bio, make sure you add both your names.

What if I don’t get accepted?

Everyone will get accepted.  While we can only have a limited number in the physical zine for printing purposes, there will be a digital bootleg containing all the zine submissions! (minus those that are inappropriate)

What is inappropriate?  Are you banning porn like tumblr did?

HECK. NO.  we love artistic porn here we’d LIKE to keep realisitc cocks out of the zine, but whatever.  We will do a vote later if you want the physical zine to be NSFW, but the bootleg will include EVERYTHING.  What we will NOT accept is the following:

Images depicting rape or incest

***overly Sexy kids: If your character is young and sexy, you'd better have a pretty damn good reason for it. A little bit is frowned upon, but potentially still accepted but it depends. Think Of Alois Trancy from black butler. Anything a step farther WILL be banned and likely reported.

Racist portrayals of stereotypes

Any antisemitic propoganda at all.

Any sort of hatred towards LGBTA. 

HATEFUL politics.  Idc what your affiliation is, just be respectful about it. You prolly won't need this anyways.

Can I have multiple submissions?

you can submit several, but we'll only choose one per person, so maybe just choose your favorite. We Will Only use one in the bootleg as well.

no. Most of the people wanting these will be people who contributed. If I made copies for all of them, I wouldn't be able to afford printing.
