Thess vs Treats

It has been a hideous day.

New Girl and The Other Part-Timer really went whole hog on pulling every single short report out of the queue, leaving me with all the Annoyances and the Monstrosities. (I differentiate because all Monstrosities are Annoyances, but not all Annoyances are Monstrosities, y'see.) I actually left a couple of the Monstrosities behind even in my two more hours of overtime because like hell am I going to take every single one of the Monstrosities just because Other Part-Timer and New Girl can't be arsed to do anything but the little simple ones, particularly when I should be getting the lion's share of those because they hurt me less.

Today was made especially fun when the cold landed me with a pinched nerve in my right shoulder in the mid-afternoon. Numb pain all the way down my arm, and it was effort not to scream when I moved. I had to take some of the mallet meds, which I almost never do during the day, because I legitimately could not cope otherwise. That dulled it some, and it's a little better now even with the mallet meds worn off thanks to a hot bath, but it still hurts. It doesn't help that these things are painful at the best of times, but one of fibromyalgia's main horrors is how it amplifies pain. Anyway, I had so many Monstrosities - mostly the ones who are learning the art of the cut-up and have a tendency to start dictating before they've done key parts of the cut-up, so they trip over new information and throw it in any old where, including the block key, which is only supposed to carry information about where the sample came from, nothing diagnostic. Also Annoyances - there's a half-dozen of them that read out the lab number on every single pot label even though we don't actually type those, and that generally adds time to a report that none of us enjoy taking, plus one of them either constantly gets a really shitty foot pedal or doesn't step on hers hard enough because I had to email her three times today because breaks in the dictation cut out key information from the report. Not what you want to do when your entire right arm is screaming.

And the numbers. Seriously. New Girl and Other Part-Timer managed about 40 reports apiece - the short, easy ones. I did 130 or so. And of course, none of them are working overtime. I get that it's easier for me to work overtime because I don't have to commute, but for fuck's sake, they could at least make my life easier in one aspect, since I'm giving up my evenings and probably my fucking Saturday to keep us from going under entirely. So if they're going to do so few anyway, why can't they take the Annoyances and Monstrosities? At least sometimes? Why can't they at least take things chronologically?

(Because they're lazy as fuck, that's why.)

So anyway, I ate a thing, and now I am settling in for the evening, and I will probably require more mallet meds soon, and ... okay, I'm not entirely grumbling but I am a little. See, when I did the whole Next Fest Demo thing, I budgeted for a couple that were coming out a bit before payday. I hadn't anticipated deciding, "Fuck it; I am going to see how Veilguard really is before I talk myself out of it again". Ah well. Payday in a week. I can live without Luma Island for a week, and it'll still be on sale then, so it's fine. Besides, I have a Rook to get through the end of the world and the death of the gods and everything. Not entirely sure that's a thing I have the spoons for right now, though. Which sucks because I'm at the climax of Lucanis' and Bellara's companion questlines, but ... you know, right arm, ow. I'll see how I feel after I finish my hot chocolate and let my mallet meds kick in.

Do I recommend scentbird? Tbh no, I've lost track of how many times I don't receive the card with fragrance information for one of my two scents.

I've also been victim of leaky vials/atomizers, though I've only had one unusable perfume, I have many cases that are being eaten up from the leaking alcohol.

Yeah I will admit their customer service is good, like very good. Or good enough to appease me at least. I didn't care enough to email them about the unusable fragrance I mentioned above, but I did have an instance where for two months in a row i got an email stating I'd be receiving something I was excited about in my queue that month, then I got billed and they totally skipped over the perfumes they said they were sending me, but never notified me past the regular email stating they took my money and here's tracking.

So I emailed them asking why that's happening and explain i was super excited about the scents but didn't understand why I'm being told they're coming but then I'm getting something else in queue. So for whatever reason something didn't mesh up with their system when they sold through the monthly vial sizes, it was still in my queue but wouldn't roll over to out of stock like other perfumes seemingly because the sample size vials were still in stock.

All in all they gave me my choice of a free scent for my time and trouble which you know i took my time finding something pricey (retail for full bottle, since they didnt let me pick from any of the select products-which is valid) that I'd like. But anyway yeah scentbird kinda mid experience wise. You're really just paying for the convenience of perfume and a streamlined catalogue to select from.

Oof plus a friend of mine who is also a fan of fragrance bought a full size bottle (outside of scentbird/direct from distributor) of a scent she previously bought through scentbird that i also purchased (same arrival time frame as her bottle). There was a NOTICEABLE difference in the dry down scent between the two. I've seen others report that scentbird is "watered" and though I don't think they're cutting their fragrances, i do think that there is a significant product/fragrance loss during the rebottling process that makes scentbird scents lighter than if they came from a full sized (or even a sample sized) bottle direct from the distributor.

Overall am I going to take the time to email them over every small problem? No tbh.

Am I going to continue purchasing scentbird? Honestly I'm wanting to drop down to one bottle per month but unfortunately it's just "good enough" to keep getting my money as i not only like the similarity of all the tubes and cases, but American consumerism has me in a fucked up chokehold and for whatever reason I'm addicted to getting a new scent monthly as opposed to finishing out what i already have on hand.

Something something a bigger conversation to be had about mediocre product subscription services and just overall mediocre products that do serve us in some ways yes but there is better if we had the time/focus/energy to indulge and educate ourselves more on the things that we love, wow it all comes back to anticapitalism with me huh.

Do agents know that most writers prefer email and don't like QueryManager? (I think?) I know agents prefer the form for managing their queries, but do they ever think about how writers mainly prefer email? (Basing this on posts in writing forums, some writers may prefer QM but most seem to prefer email. I'm one of those!)

Agents who use and like QM do so because it makes our lives easier, yes -- but also, far from "not thinking about authors feelings", we legitimately LOVE authors, and want to make sure that we are actually able to read and consider the work that they send to us. I was an agent in the bad old days before QM. And I can assure you that authors REALLY REALLY REALLY didn't like it when we had email only.

At my agency, when we were email only, our policy was "no response means no." Why, you ask? Because the number of queries was basically triple, and we were absolutely FLOODED with queries that were nothing we would ever represent in a thousand years. At least with QM, it only LETS you query if you are in the correct categories that we actually represent. (Of course you could lie, but like... why?) The vast majority of QM queries are correctly targeted, which means they will actually be considered, saving us both from time wasted. It also means that we respond.

Additionally: My inbox is an absolute shitshow at the best of times. I just checked my phone and I currently have 65,000 UNREAD EMAILS in my inbox, and I am grooming my inbox for hours every day. THAT IS NOT AN EXAGGERATION. Now, most of them are spam, or ads, or whatever, and don't matter -- and my priority inbox is pretty well up-to-date (as best as I can make it anyway) -- client emails and editor emails and such are flagged and I have a whole system -- BUT. Do you really want your query to go into THAT quagmire? Really???? I wouldn't wish it on an enemy. QM allows both of us freedom from the fear that your work got buried or lost to a spam filter or technical glitch.

Oh and ALSO: With QM, you have to follow the directions to make the thing work. I cannot begin to tell you how many people DO NOT follow the directions when they are writing an email. When agents make jokes on twitter about people not following directions, we aren't inventing stories -- this is like, A PROBLEM. From not including any contact info, to misspelling or omitting the word "query" from the subject line so that it wouldn't get flagged to go in the query queue, or otherwise writing the subject line in such a way that it will go directly to spam, to not including samples, if there is a way to fork up an email, probably half of queriers will find it. In many cases, that means I couldn't respond to those emails if I wanted to, because I probably wouldn't even see them. I am absolutely certain that HUNDREDS of queries over the years simply got lost, sent to spam, auto-deleted, etc, because authors simply WOULD NOT follow the directions. With QM, there's little chance of that -- so every query that comes in is able to be read and responded to.

I just don't think that the majority of authors would "prefer email" if they knew it meant they wouldn't get responses and their work might never even be seen.

Thess vs Avoidant Behaviour

There are no words for the frustration right now. I feel so “out of sight, out of mind”. Not that I’d go back to that hellish commute for anything, and not that it’d even help if I were back at the office, but it’s still how it feels.

Look. Temp and Violet had a bargain. Violet does the long typing; Temp does the short ones. I do ... whatever, I guess. I was not consulted about this, because if I had been, the first question out of my mouth would have been, “So what happens when Violet isn’t typing?” Because she’s often not. Even if she’s actually in, she often has other things to do. But Temp keeps acting like the deal read “Temp does the short ones and only the short ones, forever and ever".

Side note: I wonder what the fuck she does when I’m on annual leave, or off sick. I may have to ask, because we’re at the point where I might end up having to take health leave because of her.

Today was a bad day, okay? Today was “stabbing pains in my back and hips, making sitting upright painful”. Today was, “I had to get up and move around or just lie down for a few minutes, just to maintain some semblance of equilibrium”. Today also quickly became “vertigo”. So obviously this was a day to at least try to take it easy, which was aided and abetted by the fact that we’re not actually doing too badly insofar as the queue goes - we’re in the low double-digits, which hasn’t happened in awhile.

But noooooo. I mean, I did what I could to minimise the workload, but ... you type for a specific group of people for awhile, you start to know what to expect. You see names and you hook them to how their dictation usually goes. You know the guy who’s in training and whose work is always checked over by a consultant, and who therefore ends up going, “Oh, can you go back to that bit in the middle and add...?” because he is still moderately clueless and a consultnat saved his ass. You know the guy whose dictation is only as short as it is because he has not got to grips with the footpedal after this long and tends to miss out important stuff - like, for instance, the description of a tumour - and thus obliges you to email him and go, “Um, we’re missing a bit”. You know the woman who talks way too fast. The three or four women who insist on not flagging up that there are fragments in the sample until the block key, when that has to be in the fucking body text as well. The woman with the vocal quirk of having her voice lilt up a half-octave at the end of every sentence, at just the right pitch to trigger a migraine in my case. The two trainee guys who ignore the templates altogether, obliging a lot of typing when we could just be filling out a form. The three or four people who always dictate placentas, which require copy-typing a handwritten form every fucking time. The ones who have no grasp of sentence structure, and who don’t know how to pluralise (through no real fault of their own; English is not their first language so I’m not shitting on them for that; it’s just frustrating).

Temp. Avoids. ALL OF THEM.

There are maybe one or two who dictate well - concise, well laid-out, short, simple, to the point. She takes all of those and maybe some of the less ideal ones if they’re short enough, and I get everything that could even remotely be even a tiny bit inconvenient for her. She hasn’t done a dictation that was longer than a minute long in two days.

So here’s me having a particularly bad pain day, having to get up every fifteen minutes so my back and hips can stop screaming at me, feeling unbelievably dizzy, and I get to struggle through all of the long, inconvenient, frustrating bullshit while she does all the nice simple stuff. And Violet’s not there to pick up the slack even a little bit - out of the office or otherwise engaged, I don’t know or care. I mean, okay, I care - I hope she’s okay. But the reasons she’s not doing the long typing have no bearing on the fact that she isn’t, and Temp is just fobbing them all off on me.

Scruffman seems to think that the situation is solved because Violet and Temp have an arrangement. However, no one considered that I am involved in this arrangement because I share the workload, and Temp is obviously deliberately misconstruing that arrangement to mean, “Do whatever you want and someone else will pick up the bits you don’t like”. I get that she doesn’t like them. I DON’T LIKE THEM EITHER. Fact is, however, that being stuck with too many of them doesn’t leave her in enough pain to be near tears at the end of the day. But I’m hesitant to bring it up to Scruffman because he basically waves it off every time. It’s “I’ll talk to her” or, “Oh, Violet and Temp have an arrangement” and it’s dismissive as fuck. He’s really bad with confrontation, you see, and I get the short end of the stick because there’s little to no chance that I can get into his face about it, because I’m not in the office. And as long as the work gets done, he seems fine.

I left one seven-minute long bit of nightmare for someone else to do, but I did everything else. Because what choice did I have? Temp wasn’t going to. Violet’s not able to for some reason. And it still needs to get done. Hell, I feel guilty about leaving the seven-minute long bit of nightmare, despite it having come up at the head of the queue pretty much towards the end of the day and wouldn’t have necessarily left me with the time to do it anyway.

So we have Temp and Scruffman avoiding shit they don’t like - any typing that’s not really quick and easy, and conflict, respectively. And it all gets lumped onto me in both cases. And I am fed up beyond the telling of it. Right now I’m just trying to let things settle a little so I can manage a trip to check the post and go to the corner shop. Days like this require chocolate.

By commissioning me you agree to follow my terms of service. Please read them with attention; however, if there’s anything you might want clarified, do not hesitate to reach out!

You can contact me through my Twitter account to ask for commission slots; further discussion will take place at Discord after I give you my username. Or via PM in Tumblr. In the initial message, please specify the following:

Type of commission (lineart/simple color/cellsahding + number of characters + simple background or no background, or which kind of realistic portrait)

A description of what you want done, if you feel like providing a sketch or an image sample will help, add it! :)

Email address, so you can receive your invoice.

During the following discussion on Discord I will ask you for this:

Reference images: Please provide me with ALL the reference images you might think are necessary. I will not hunt down any ref for you, as it would take time from the actual commission.

Pose: References for the pose are a MUST. Even if it’s just a sketch you did of a stick figure, that would be incredibly helpful.

REFUSAL OF SERVICE

I have the right to refuse servicing anyone who does not comply with the TOS, is rude or disrespectful, even mid commission, or asks me to work into a fandom I definitely feel uncomfortable with. I also have the right to cancel any commission at any time if the client is behaving in a rude manner or makes me feel uncomfortable. My hide is thick, but don’t test me. Please read the list of things that I’ll do/won’t do down below before commissioning me, as I will refuse working on any subject that I find uncomfortable. However, don’t hesitate to reach out and ask, as we could negotiate, depending on which you might want me to draw.

PRICES

Prices are the ones listed on the commission sheet, those are base prices and Paypal fees are not included. More will be added if you decide to include more elements like extra characters, detailed background or extra detailed garments/armor. All the extras will be listed and added to the final price, plus the Paypal fee, on the estimate.

PAYMENT

I only accept EUR/USD payment. Have that in mind before commissioning because of Paypal fees.

NO CRYPTOCURRENCY.

I will require a 50% payment before I start sketching (please, wait until I send you a message accepting your commission). The other 50% will be required when the commission is finished and before sending the file to the client.

All payments for the commissions will be final, so no refunds.

However, if any catastrophic event forces me to cancel the commission, you will have a refund of what you might have paid so far.

Private commissions (that is, those on which the client doesn’t allow the artist to showcase the final piece) will have an extra charge of 50%. That affects Fanart and DnD characters.

Realistic portraits of yourself, friends and/or family might not have that extra charge (for privacy reasons).

TIME

Expect your fanart drawing in a scope of time of one-two weeks, depending of the complexity of the work and the queue. Realistic oil portraits will take one or two months, depending on how complex it might be. However, if circumstances prevent me from delivering in time, you will be notified.

REVISIONS

When negotiating the sketch, I will only allow three major revisions (change of outfit, change of pose…). Once it’s approved no major changes will be allowed without charging extra money. Minor changes like swapping a color, slightly altering the hair or minor details in the outfit are free, but try to group said changes with each revision. You have the right to reach out to see how things are going, but please be understanding and don’t be messaging me every day. For each revision I will send you a low res image of the entire artwork or a close up of the detail you want to see. You will be told when you reach the three major revision limit before I start charging extra. Mistakes made by me will be corrected for free.

COPYRIGHT

I, SpanishDragon, reserve the right to:

Post the finished piece in my social media as part of my portfolio.

Claim the art piece as my own.

Resale it as prints.

By accepting the TOS, you will agree that you may not:

Modify/edit the piece

Remove my signature

Claim the piece as your own

Use the piece for commercial purposes, unless explicitly agreed between client and artist (using it as banner or icon is accepted, as long as you credit me)

Use the comisioned piece, or any part of it, for Non Fungible Tokens or NFTs, or part of any blockchain technology, or any other form of cryptocurrency or AI generated art

Post the piece without the proper credit

Canon characters (if I’m not familiar with the fandom, please, provide extra references and a bit of a description so I can have an idea of who they are)

OCs (provided that you give me enough references)

Platonic or friendly relationships

Real people (will ask you permission to post it on social media)

NSFW art. That includes sexually explicit content, nudity or heavy gore, as well as drug use.

No Rings of Power fanart, and this is not negotiable. I want nothing to do with that piece of media.

Explicit romance is a straight no. Family wedding photos are fine, as well as a couple just being shown together.

i think most of it is because people are upset and surprised few tumblr folks seemed to have successfully bought tickets / tickets for good seats. but i think another part of it is the suspicion the boosts didn’t work. it seemed like a lot of folks who were supposed to have boosts were put in the back of the queue, while folks without boosts were allowed to purchase first (and likely purchase better seats with the better selection available). there’s also the suspicion this was intentional because ticketmaster knew longer-term fans with boosts would be more willing to pay a higher price just to be there…that’s my thinking at least…i don’t know if all of this is actually what truly happened but it would explain why so many people we know should have received a boost didn’t get tickets. it’s still a small sample size though and specific to tumblr users so i of course don’t think all front row seats are going to be filled with people who don’t care about taylor. but i do think there’s a good chance more casual fans will have managed better seats with this tour

Yeah I’m not sure if those claims are entirely true but from what i’ve seen people with new ticketmaster accounts/people who signed up for the verified fan sale for the first time got in faster than people who’ve been registered since reputation and had boosts. I had boosts from reputation, loverfest, and the email boost from taylor nation and i was the last person to get in out of everyone i know. it’s definitely frustrating and i get why people think it’s unfair but newer or more casual fans aren’t the issue here

oh that's interesting you've both got the same idea here! obviously it's hard to tell for certain especially when everything's still in chaos but if that is the case that the boost stuff essentially worked in reverse than that is so bad :(
