late night thoughts; art and patrick moving in together after graduating from tennis academy
w/c: 726
warnings: smut !!, handjob, inaccurate artrick dialogue maybe
a/n: my first fic on this account and i haven't written in so long nghh i missed my little white boys.
patrick has a habit of being very unintentionally loud in the middle of the night whenever he's feeling peckish. nine times out of ten it wakes art up from their shared bed. usually he'd brush it off, too tired to get up from bed but he decided that he wanted to join his roommate in the kitchen.
"oh sorry, art. didn't mean t'wake you," patrick slurs, putting away constituents of his pb&j. "you should go back to sleep." patrick stands across from him over the island while art sits on one of the mismatched stools placed below the elevated side.
"i had this dream. you were in it," art rests his head on his forearms. "we were like-- dating and you broke up with me for some girl," art recalls it like he's unbothered but even in this low light patrick can still read on his face that his dream did bother him.
patrick props himself up on his arms on the counter leaning in slightly. "even if we were dating, art, i wouldn't do that," art nods to that and patrick can only see his faint outline moving. "you came in here to tell me that?"
"yeah," art gets up from the stool to move next to patrick and seats himself on the counter next to patrick's sandwich. "what'd you make?" art doesn't care and can smell the peanut butter from where he's sitting, he just wants to be closer to patrick.
patrick moves to stand directly in front of art, slotting himself between his dangling legs. "i don't really want it anymore." patrick whispers before pressing his lips into art's. art melts into patrick's lip and touch as he wraps his hands around art's waist. the feeling isn't foreign to art, all those curious nights where it just happened that neither art or patrick had a hook-up they could call up. it'd be inconvenient for the girl to come over anyway with just one bed being owned between the two of them.
"pat--" art's whining against patrick, pushing his hips forward into the air for nonexistent friction. "mmngh.." he gets so needy with minimal touch.
"you know i would never do that you, right? i don't know what my life would be without you." given that patrick has spent most of his life being friends with patrick, he means it. he'd be a whole different person without art in his life.
patrick starts palming art through his boxers to halt art's thrusts into nothing. "fuck pat," he huffs out, "i know you wouldn't," he's curling in on himself, slightly dizzy. "shit, please keep doing that." patrick splays his fingers across the outline of art's dick, pressing on the tip of it. this gets art reeling his head back. patrick's barely touching him and he's already close. it usually went like this with him. maybe it's the guilt of hooking up with his best friend that turns him on. maybe it's just the desire alone.
as art bucks into patrick's hand, patrick pulls it away to which art protests against before pulling the waistband of art's boxers right below his balls. his fully erect dick springs out, leaking pre-cum. "hurts" art says under his breath. patrick slowly starts jerking art off, spreading the sticky liquid around the tip. art moans loudly feeling himself get closer to the edge.
patrick increases his speed gradually, having art squirming on the counter in front of him. "feels s'good, pat" his lips fall into an 'o' shape as his hips lift off the laminate. he can barely control the noises that come out of him, resulting in a lot of gibberish. patrick chooses to silently watch him, his bulge progressively straining against his own boxers. he could get off on watching art like this for hours. unraveling under his touch. "fuck-- m'comin, mmnghh"
he grabs onto patrick's shoulder to stabilize himself as he cums all over his hand, his face all skewed up and little whimpers flying past his lips. patrick slows his hand down, letting art ride out his orgasm and swiping over his tip to tease him. the cum drips onto the counter from the sheer amount that came out.
art slumps against patrick's shoulder, even more exhausted than he was when he initially walked into the kitchen. "don't fall asleep on me. you're cleaning this up."

*lightly taps your inbox and waves* Hello!
I am very invested in how you interpret Shadow Milk’s fall through the Yogurt River of Rebirth, so I’m wondering if you have any extra thoughts on that? I’d love to hear them 0>0
*twirling the mail paper this ask is housed in* And, I love your art!!! Everything about it draws me in. There’s some sorta pull I get that, no matter how long I cease to look in the general direction of your blog, there’s always a snap of something new and refreshing each time. It’s kinda hard to explain, but anyway, I love it!!!!! :3
I love the silly blue boi as much as anyone, and it’s plain to see you like him too hehe~ :D
*crashes in here*
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HELLO AND THANK YOU FOR THE ASK FIRST OF ALL! And also thank you for the compliments??? QwQ I'm so glad you enjoy my little drawings!!! I'm definitely going through my biggest hyperfixation ever haha!!! I've been hyperfixated on like, other media before but never like THIS. It's never made me want to draw art of them THIS badly. But something about the silly blue boi just HITS right! What can I say!!!
As for my interpretation of the Fount's pass through the Yogurt River of Rebirth... oh boy, where do I even begin.
So just to set up a few pieces before I explain:
I headcanon that, being the Virtue of Knowledge, the Fount had a magical tool (his orb, the one we see the Fount's statue also holding) to look into the future! Which means he probably also knew what was going to happen to him and his other virtues. He knew they were going to corrupt and knew the signs. And I believe that he absolutely tried to stop it from happening. A fight for control over something inevitable, basically.
And he failed. In his attempts to find a shred of control over their destinies, he failed to prevent the corruption of the other virtues. He was left alone with his failure, both as a guide and as their friend.
He is futile, he is enraged. He is nothing. (/ref to my fic hehe)
Which then brings us to Shadow Milk. To me, there's major identity disturbance going on here. The Fount is who he was designed to be—this shining beacon of divine knowledge, created by the Witches. Shadow Milk? He's everything the Fount didn't want to be. Everything he was scared of becoming.
I see Shadow Milk as the Fount's Monster. His Beast. The snake in the garden, whispering that it's okay to be angry. To fight back. To stop being a tool of the Witches and take control of his own fate. And the Fount HATED that part of himself. He was terrified of giving in, because if he did, what hope would be left? But he could only resist for so long. Especially with no one left to lean on.
Eventually, when it all became too much, he went to the river. Not to be reborn. Not to transform. But to die.
I actually don't think it was called the Yogurt River of Rebirth back then. I think the Fount literally just gave up his role, his purpose, everything. He threw himself into the river out of despair, punishment, hopelessness.
But Shadow Milk didn't let that be the end.
The Fount died, and Shadow Milk clawed his way back up, reborn from that grief and rage. The embodiment of everything the Fount feared, everything he tried to bury. His final failure. He couldn't even save himself.
And I think that's why the Yogurt River of Rebirth got its name. Because the Fount died, and Shadow Milk emerged in his place.
To me, Shadow Milk is the Fount's desire for control. That's why he embraced deceit, because he realized that he could say anything and people would believe him. Shadow Milk is all the pent-up anger, frustration, and hatred that the Fount kept inside.
Going into the river was the Fount's attempt to drown himself and all of those "ugly" parts with him, but it failed. And Shadow Milk hates him for it.
That's probably why Shadow Milk also makes Pure Vanilla Cookie go into the river! :D Especially with all the "You're destined to walk the same path I did." thing they got going on. That's how Shadow Milk himself embraced deceit. He did it to survive. The only way for Pure Vanilla to understand is if he goes through the same thing, right?
Anyway— oh my god I yapped so hard I am So Sorry HAHA I hope this is an interesting read!! :'D I'm a little bad with words and English not being my first language and DJHBJFHDFHF I can speak so scatter-brained sometimes about my interests! xD
Thank you again so much for the ask!!! Please don't be shy to poke me with more questions! <3 I appreciate you!
Also if you're interested in more thoughts about the river, I need to nudge you in my brainrot buddy's direction because they are the one who made me this invested in it as a concept SGFDHGJDFHGF

TLK: Hakim and Akeem Refs
///// PLOT SPOILERS FOR "BE PREPARED: A TWISTED TALE" BELOW /////
The Hatari is a coalition of brothers introduced in the book Be Prepared: A Twisted Tale (an older-audience novel series of classic Disney tales with a dark twist). The Hatari is said to live around the area called Garamba, which is what the Pridelanders call the oasis that Simba was raised in by Timon and Pumbaa. The brothers that lead the Hatari pride have deemed Scar a sworn enemy after the young lion tried to take over their land. He was pulled to safety by Mufasa the first time, but when he encountered them again by accident while begrudgingly escorting Nala to search for Simba, he didn't have his big brother to protect him. The twist is that Scar instead dies at the paws of the Hatari brothers once he was found critically injured in Garamba, rather than just the hyenas finishing him off at Pride Rock.
Headcanons:
In my additional headcanon, the Hatari is where my OC Sakin comes from, due to how one brother in the book was unnamed and how easily an Arabic name like his could fit right in with the others.
(Also... I'm aware that what they did to Scar is part of the twist in this book's AU, but I still feel the Hatari Pride can very much exist in the canon TLKverse.)
But yeah because I made Sakin their brother, this means that they, too, are Barbary lions. Barbary lions who migrated from the Atlas region in North Africa down to East Africa. They settled in Garamba, a prosperous oasis that they just had to claim for themselves.
Hakim is the eldest brother. He was once the sole leader of the coalition. Once Scar challenged him for his land, he entrusted his brothers to co-lead as a means to strengthen the pride. He is intimidating, aggressive, and bullheaded.
(Voicecanon: Something like Nathan Explosion from Dethklok or Corey Taylor from Slipknot)
Akeem is the middle brother. He was Hakim's second-in-command and has since been promoted to co-leader. He is an unstable, over-protective, grudge-holding lion who tends to run his mouth, eager to attack intruders.
(Voicecanon: Maybe something like Axl Rose? idk if anyone else has suggestions I'll take them)
Sakin is the youngest brother. He was the Hatari's scout, but was never promoted to co-leader due to being viewed as the black sheep who weighed the brothers down often. He differed from their aggressive, occasionally cannibalistic ways, by being a calm, emotional rock and taking up a vegetarian lifestyle. He left the Hatari to attempt to claim the Pridelands as he believed there were no sitting rulers, wishing his brothers would be impressed. He instead stumbled across Zira on his way, leading to Vitani's existence (looks like she's got some uncles now).
(Voicecanon: Something raspy like Trent Lane from Daria or Moto Moto from Madagascar 2)
Designs:
Due to already basing Sakin's mane on a generic metal hairstyle, I decided to make the entire Hatari Pride based on various rock/metal influences. As a whole, they mostly take after the likes of Motley Crue and Van Halen.
Hakim Design Inspirations:
Nikki Sixx (mane fringes)
Alice Cooper (eye markings and nose shape)
Gene Simmons (tongue, mane/pelt contrast)
Various shock rock aesthetics
Mastiff dogs (overall shape)
Akeem Design Inspirations:
Vince Neil (mane fringes, band-like forehead marking)
Twisted Sister (eye markings)
Axl Rose (partial inspiration for mane)
Various glam rock and hard rock aesthetics
Sheep dogs (overall shape)
Sakin Design Inspirations:
Tommy Lee (mane fringes)
Eddie Van Halen (mane fringes and smile)
Various thrash metal band aesthetics
Beast from Beauty and the Beast (eyes, teeth, and mane)
Nazar amulets (eyes and role in the pride)
I plan to make much more art of the Hatari. I have headcanons for them that I'd planned ahead months in advance (just gotta draw them eventually).
(On kind of a serious note, while I already thought up designs for these guys a long time ago, some recent real-world news that affected the music scene on a global/cultural scale really made it so I had metal themes on my mind and it ultimately motivated me to show off these sketches.)

I was rereading Artificial Condition again to get the deets on Tlacey's ComfortUnit, and decided to pull quotes relating to it and others half for analytical purposes, half for fic-writing. I'm sure I'm reading too much into some of it, but that's the fun of fandom, no?
It's always been uncomfortable to read MB's thoughts on ComfortUnits, but it's particularly uncomfortable when reading specifically for them, got to say.
When constructs were first developed, they were originally supposed to have a pre-sentient level of intelligence, like the dumber variety of bot. But you can’t put something as dumb as a hauler bot in charge of security for anything without spending even more money for expensive company-employed human supervisors. So they made us smarter. The anxiety and depression were side effects.
Not specific to ComfortUnits, but the first sentence applies to them as well. I wonder if part of MB's contempt is that it thinks they didn't have as much added to their intelligence, since they're not doing security?
Constructs with intercourse-related human parts are sexbots, not SecUnits. Sexbots don’t have interior weapon systems, so it isn’t like it’s easy to confuse them with SecUnits. (SecUnits also have less than null interest in human or any other kind of sex, trust me on that.)
That would also explain why it insists on calling them sexbots, when bots are less sophisticated and complex than -units. MB is wholly repulsed by sex and irritated by other people being interested in sex, and the wording here implies that perhaps ComfortUnits are actively positive towards sex in its experience.
ā€œNo. Sexbots are altered.ā€ At least the ones I had seen had been altered. Some were mostly Unit standard with a few changes, others were radically different.
Most if not all of the ComfortUnits MB would have seen at this point would have been basically sex workers for mining teams rather than what I feel like the stereotype of this concept is (pets for rich men) and so that's interesting to me. What might Unit standard for ComfortUnits be? Like, is it exaggeratedly sexy faces/bodies, or are they normally made as regular-but-good-looking-people? Are the alterations it's seen typically to make ComfortUnits more sexy or just to have more human variety because that makes company clients happier?
I had hair on my head, and eyebrows; that was a part of SecUnit configuration that was shared with sexbots, though the code controlling it kept SecUnit head hair short to keep it from interfering with the armor. The whole idea of constructs is that we look human, so we don’t make the clients uncomfortable with our appearance.
Particularly per this, which implies that an appearance that's truly indistinguishable from a human's is overall preferred.
It wasn’t wearing armor and its physical configuration didn’t match SecUnit standard. It had a lot of hair, silver with blue and purple on the ends, pulled back and braided like Tapan’s but in a much more complicated pattern. Its facial features were different from mine, but all Units’ features are different, assigned randomly based on the human cloned material that’s used to make our organic parts. Its arms were bare, and there was no metal showing and no gun ports. This was not a SecUnit. I was looking at a sexbot. That is not the official designation, ART said. The official designation is ComfortUnit but everybody knows what that means. Sexbots aren’t allowed to walk around in human areas without orders, any more than murderbots. Someone must have sent it here.
Marthaaaaaa, "didn't match SecUnit standard configuration" is such a clever, characterizationy way to describe this ComfortUnit, but I want to know more specifics! Also very characterizationy for MB to note that its arms are bare, both making it vulnerable (showing skin) and showing that it's vulnerable (no built-in guns).
I'm going to chop up the investigation/"flashback" to Ganaka Pit:
In the corridor near the living quarters, I found the other ready room, the one for the ComfortUnits. Inside were four shapes that were clearly cubicles, but smaller. Their doors stood open, the plastic beds inside empty. In the corner there was space for a recycler, but no weapons lockers, and the storage cabinets were all different. [...] But the cubicles for the sexbots were open, which meant they had been inside when the emergency occurred and the power shut off. If the power is off, you can manually open a cubicle from the inside, but it won’t shut again. [...] It had been used. But by the ComfortUnits, to download their data during the incident. It was patchy and hard to put together, until I realized the ComfortUnits had been communicating with each other. [...] There had been a code download from another mining installation for the ComfortUnits, supposedly a patch purchased from a third party ComfortUnit supplier. The ComfortUnits had all flagged it as non-standard and needing review by SecSystem and the human systems analyst, but the techs who had downloaded it ordered them to apply it. It turned out to be well-disguised malware. It hadn’t affected the ComfortUnits, but had used their feeds to jump to SecSystem and infect it. SecSystem had infected the SecUnits, bots, and drones, and everything capable of independent motion in the installation had lost its mind. In between the running and shooting and the humans screaming in the background, the ComfortUnits had managed to analyze the malware and discover it was supposed to jump from them to the hauler bots and shut them down. This would disrupt operations so the other mining installation could get their shipment to the cargo transport first. This had been a sabotage attempt, not a mass murder. But a mass murder was what was happening. The humans had managed to get an alert out to the port, but it was clear help would not arrive in time. The ComfortUnits noted that the SecUnits were not acting in concert, and were also attacking each other, while the bots randomly smashed into anything that moved. The ComfortUnits had decided that taking SecSystem back to factory default via its manual interface was their best option. ComfortUnits are more physically powerful than a human, but not a SecUnit or bot. They had no inbuilt weapons, and while they could pick up a projectile or energy weapon and use it, they had no education modules on how the weapons worked. They could pick one up, try to aim it, pull the trigger, and hope the safety wasn’t engaged. One by one the file downloads had stopped. One had signaled that it would try to decoy SecUnit attention away from the others, and three acknowledged. One had heard screams from the control center and diverted there to try to save the humans trapped inside, and two acknowledged. One had stayed at the entrance to a corridor to try to buy time to reach SecSystem, and one acknowledged. One reported reaching SecSystem, then nothing.
This is all related so clinically, and there's something about MB having to "realize" that the ComfortUnits were communicating with each other. I suspect some of that's the apparent lack of camaraderie between SecUnits out on the same assignment prompting it to assume that constructs in general do not interact, and hey, maybe it's supposed to be correct about that. It also feels like more of the same casual dismissal of ComfortUnits' interiority. But given a) the overall coordination of this response to the corruption and b) the fact that ComfortUnits are programmed for some amount of social interaction, it makes me wonder if they actually are used to holding conversations among themselves as much as their governor modules allow. They don't have armor and helmets. They can't hide their expressions (except by controlling them) and they aren't as physically isolated.
Also, this is so heartwrenching every time I read it. They were ComfortUnits. They had no hope at all of taking out all of the corrupted systems, and they still left their cubicles/ready room to try to save their clients. That, plus the lack of any suggestion of compulsion to sacrifice themselves in MB's analysis, implies to me that their relationship to the humans they're contracted to is more complicated than a comparison to sex-trafficked people IRL would suggest.
Chopping up the next long bit as well ...
But now I knew that. If [the ComfortUnit] hadn’t pinged me, I wouldn’t have realized it was in play. Why is it here? I asked ART. I assume that’s a rhetorical question, it said. There was only one way to find out. I acknowledged the ping. The moment stretched. Then it reached out to my feed. It was cautious, the connection almost tentative. It said, I know what you are. Who sent you? I replied, I’m on contract to a private individual. Why are you communicating with me? SecUnits on the same contract don’t talk, either verbally or on the feed, unless they absolutely have to in order to perform their duties. Communicating with units on different contracts has to be done through the controlling HubSystems. And SecUnits don’t interact with ComfortUnits anyway. Could this be a rogue sexbot? If it was rogue, why was it here on RaviHyral? I didn’t know why anybody would stay here voluntarily, including the humans. No, it made more sense if Tlacey owned its contract, and had sent it here to kill Tapan. If it tried to attack my client, I would tear it apart.
[The newsburst showing MB enters the conversation.]
The sexbot replied, This is you, and sent me a copy of a public newsburst. [...] It said, It’s you. Who sent you? [...] I’m not asking because I want to report you. I won’t tell anyone. I’m asking—There’s no human controlling you? You’re free? I could feel ART in my feed, carefully extending itself out toward the sexbot. I have a client, I told it. I had to distract it, if ART was going to be able to get any info. Even though it was a sexbot, it was still a construct, still a whole different proposition from a pilot bot. Who sent you here? Was it Tlacey?
I think it's interesting that this is the first acknowledgement that "sexbots" actually function at a more sophisticated level than bots.
Yes. She is my client. As a ComfortUnit, not a SecUnit. Sending a ComfortUnit into this situation was morally irresponsible and a clear violation of contract. I’m guessing the sexbot knew that. [...] I told the sexbot, Your client wants to kill my client. It didn’t reply. I said, You told Tlacey about me. It must have recognized what I was during that first meeting. If it hadn’t been sure, seeing the damage I had done to the three humans Tlacey had sent would have been all the confirmation it needed. I was seething, but I kept it out of the feed. As I told ART, bots and constructs can’t trust each other, so I don’t know why it made me angry. I wish being a construct made me less irrational than the average human but you may have noticed this is not the case. I said, Your client sent a ComfortUnit to do a SecUnit’s job.
I LOVE this. On one level, MB believes that constructs can't trust each other because they don't care about each other and it therefore is irrational to be surprised that another construct sells it out, though to me as the reader this is a normal kind of only-technically-irrational feeling. On another level, the ComfortUnit very probably told Tlacey because, you know, it's enslaved by her and she can fry its brain, and I as the reader do think it's irrational to seethe at the construct specifically as untrustworthy for that.
It countered, She didn’t know she needed a SecUnit until today. It added, I told her you were a SecUnit, I didn’t tell her you were a rogue. I wondered if I could believe that. And I wondered if it had tried to explain to Tlacey the impossibility of this assignment. What do you propose to do? There was a pause. A long one, five seconds. We could kill them. Well, that was an unusual approach to its dilemma. Kill who? Tlacey? All of them. The humans here. [...] It was so outrageous, it sounded like something a human would say. Huh. I said to the sexbot, Is that how Tlacey thinks constructs talk to each other? There was another pause, only two seconds this time. Yes. Then, Tlacey believes you stayed behind to steal the files for the tech group. What did you do for so long in the feed blackout area?
There are two totally different conversations going on at the same time. To MB, this is sort of bewildering nonsense that's wasting its time and making it suspicious. To the ComfortUnit, this is something else. It's showing MB the newsbursts and going, I know this is you, I know you've achieved freedom, I am keeping your secret. Look, I have to say this to you, but I'm saying it really unconvincingly so you know where the line is between my words and hers.
MB's paranoia as a rogue makes it even more guarded than the construct that is still actually enslaved.
I was hiding. I know, not my best lie. Does Tlacey know you want to kill her? Because the ā€œkill all humansā€ thing might have come from Tlacey, but the intensity under it was real, and I didn’t think it was directed at all humans. She knows, it said.
The thing is, a lot of other writers would tell you exactly why the ComfortUnit hates Tlacey, and it would probably be for a reason directly related to it being a ComfortUnit (i.e. really demeaning sex acts). Here we have to infer. Tlacey doesn't hesitate to put it in danger with a SecUnit, and later she orders it to attack in what would be suicide if MB weren't kind enough to just disable it -- so what other dangerous, not-intended-purpose things has she ordered it to do? How often does she do this? She seems pretty cool about killing people and covering up deaths -- does she force the ComfortUnit to be involved in that to keep her own hands clean? Is the ComfortUnit the one who sent the killware to the public transport earlier in the book?
A code bundle came through the feed. You can’t infect a construct with malware like that, not without sending it through a Sec or HubSystem. […] The sexbot hadn’t said anything else and I sent a ping in time to feel it withdraw its feed. It was walking away down the corridor. […] It was the message string, three words. Please help me.
OBSESSED WITH THIS. Obsessed with the way that it doesn't remotely seem to affect MB the way that a plea for help from a human does. This is a construct with a working governor module that is being unwillingly put into danger by its owner/client, and MB is nothing but suspicious of it. Afraid of it? It's really trying, but they're on two totally different wavelengths. Which I suspect is in large part because ultimately MB is programmed to protect its clients.
And then way closer to the end:
It said, ā€œI saw you get off the tube access in that section. There’s nothing else down there. It’s not in the historical database anymore, but the humans still tell each other horror stories about it. If you were really a rogue and not under orders to go there, then there was an eighty-six percent chance that you went there because you were one of the units involved.ā€
Just as the event lives on as echoes in MB's organic memory, it's become folklore on the station through the humans who went down there and found the aftermath.
I believed it. ā€œDrop your wall.ā€ It did, and I rode the feed into its brain. I could feel ART with me, alert for traps. But I found the governor module, rendered it null, and slid back out into my own body again. The ComfortUnit had fallen back, sitting down on the deck with a thump, staring at me. I said, ā€œGo away. Don’t let me see you again. Don’t hurt anyone on this transit ring or I’ll find you.ā€ It shoved upright, unsteady. More of ART’s drones flicked through the air, making sure it didn’t try to damage anything, herding it toward the door. It followed the drones out into the corridor. Through ART’s feed I watched it go through to the main hatch, where the lock cycled and it went out into the transit ring.
This is another one of those "looks very different from each POV" things. MB is probably still thinking about the "kill all the humans" thing, plus internalized issues regarding rogue constructs, and is acutely aware of the ComfortUnit as a threat to humans even without built-in weapons and combat modules. The ComfortUnit is like WHOA you just refrained from killing me when I was attacking you, were given control of me by my client and didn't make me hurt myself, and went into my head and did nothing but free me?! That is how you make a folk hero. (Though I am ą² _ą²  on its behalf because come on, MB, it just wants to get away. You could be a little nicer.)

debunking the ā€œcw supergirl is just female superman, and not comic book accurateā€ arguments because you guys are just annoying
i’ll be as unbiased as i can because yeah, there are some elements ripped from superman media, but for the most part, the arguments i’ve seen suck.
ā€œsupergirl in the comics hates humans and is ruthlessā€
no, she fucking doesn’t. why would she? ā€œkara doesn’t care about humans because they aren’t kryptonianā€ reads as elitism to me. she saw all her people die, yet she’d see others as inferior and not care whether they live or die? how does that track? the equivalent of ā€œkara hates humansā€ is john byrne’s superman, btw, where clark didn’t care about krypton and only earth. way to completely miss the point of her new 52 run.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
kara can miss krypton, her people, and her culture without hating others. she can feel like an outsider without turning that into bitterness.
ā€œsupergirl in the comics is way angrierā€
she is. about krypton. because the comics pick up right after she loses her home. the cw show is set years after kara arrives on earth. in the comics, she’s a teenager when it happens. teens are angry at the world to begin with so imagine how much angrier you'd get when that world is suddenly gone. it makes sense.
that’s not to say kara wasn’t angry in the show. she was. season 3 explores that in depth. all the survivor’s guilt she’d been burying caught up to her. she became distant, cold, and angry. but she healed, just like she did in the comics (at least for now, dc don't fuck it up!!!). this is anger rooted in trauma, and it’s the kind you can heal from over time.
Tumblr media
but there’s another kind of anger that defines kara, both in comics and the show - the anger that comes from the frustration born of other people’s inaction. kara is very passionate and vocal about her moral stands, and she can become quite upset when those she thought shared her values suddenly disagree with her. that said, i’m not saying she’s always right in these moments. after all, everyone has the right to make their own choices. however, this kind of anger speaks a lot about how deeply kara cares about her morals and how much she wants to protect others, no matter the cost.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is why my favorite post-crisis kara is the one from "superman: unbound". her anger stems from seeing the same injustice that people of krypton faced happening on earth. "i didn't have powers. nobody did. and when bad things happened, we were helpless. [...] ask regular people down there how they feel when guys like that terrorize them. i have powers now. and i’m going to use them." and would you look at that, she does care about people.
ā€œthe show made her too human and not kryptonian enoughā€
no, they fucking didn’t.

maybe i'll do a longer post on this eventually, but for now tl;dr: kara never rejected her kryptonian identity. she never stopped calling argo ā€œhomeā€. she never denied her heritage. the argument that ā€œshe’s not kryptonian enough because she embraces earth and its peopleā€ (which, btw, isn’t only populated by humans) is rooted in xenophobia. what’s wrong with an immigrant finding a second home? her whole story is about getting a second chance.
seasons 1 - 3 are all about kara's survivor's guilt, and learning it’s okay to be kara danvers. she will always be kryptonian, but she also deserves a life. and funnily enough, even in the comics, kara chooses to stay on earth after learning argo still exists. nobody called that ā€œless kryptonianā€ or "clark-like". because it's not.
a related take i’ve seen is ā€œkara should’ve been a scientist instead of a journalist because it would feel more alienā€. first of all, why would science feel more alien? humans do science too. second, krypton wasn’t a sterile lab planet despite what john byrne says. it was full of love, art, history, storytelling, culture. choosing a more ā€œartisticā€ job actually fits kara.
as for why she became a journalist, that’s next.
(also, on the topic of kara’s relationship to krypton, i’ve got three longer posts here, here and here)
ā€œthey made kara a journalistā€
i mean, fuck, dude. i can’t argue too hard with that. it’s one of my favorite aspects of this version of kara because i’ve always loved journalism, but yeah, it was probably borrowed from clark.
that said, making your hero’s job either a) billionaire so they never have to work or b) something that puts them close to the action - cop, detective, forensic scientist, or journalist - is the default writing move in superhero media.
pre-crisis kara had a lot of great jobs the showrunners could've chosen from. they kind of ignored them and went with an easier option to tie her civilian life into the superhero plot. so i do get the fans' frustration there. it's just something that i personally like because regardless of why they made her a reporter, they wrote a great story with it. and kara becoming a journalist ties directly into her past. her planet was dying, and those in power didn’t tell the people. now, on earth, she makes sure that won’t happen again. so i think it's a nice circle moment.
ā€œher personality was too similar to clark’sā€
in season 1? sure. as supergirl, kara was confident. as kara danvers, she was kind of a pushover. it's the same tactic clark uses to hide his identity. so yeah, surface-level similarities are there.
but each has a different reason. clark made the decision to have clark kent be the clumsy mask that throws people off. kara never made that decision. it was forced upon her. despite his clumsy persona, clark still finds a way to help people with his articles. he hides his personality, but not his intellect. kara wasn’t even allowed to show that. which is why she wasn’t content with her life in s1.
season 2 is about kara learning how to be kara danvers in a way that isn’t a mask. building a life she’s happy with. and when she does, kara drops the clumsy act.
kara also matures a lot throughout the show. as the show progressed, kara felt more and more like bronze age supergirl rather than a copy of clark.
i'm not even going to get into the "kara isn't supposed to be as kind and gentle as clark" because that's like, so far from the truth it's not even worth arguing over. they are superheroes, people, of course both would be kind.
ā€œthe show used too many of superman’s villainsā€
yeah, they did. but that has nothing to do with kara’s personality and this post is already too long so we’re done here.

In the year I've had this account I've never sent an ask before, so please bare with me. Also, I know the anatomy is a little broken, I tried. Fixing mistakes onĀ tradition art is hard. Anyways, while reading your story I was inspired to make some art and I wanted to ramble about it some. Sorry this is kind of long.Ā
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first piece is actually a little old. I got busy before I could make the time to send it (gotta love thatĀ physics has been kicking my ass for the past two months). In my mind it's what the girls looked like before they meet each other. And those are sketches I did trying iron out what I wanted them to look like. I came in knowing what I wanted for Maximoff, so it was mainly figuring out what Wayne was wearing. You can also see how all of my pens were dying while I was trying to make this.Ā
Wayne's outfit is in there's families dark blue color scheme withĀ sprinkling of green in there to match with Maximoff. Her outfits completely consumes her figure to 1) look profession to not embarrasses the family and 2) hide how thin she is and all the bruises she has. Her skin is ghostly white cause I still head canon that she was doing something to herself to make herself paler (which literally only makes me angrier at Bruce, can't wait for Logan to BEAT this man). Even though, she's already super tall, she's still in heels cause she's still not as tall as her Dad. Also, I think she would have started wearing them pretty early on giving the press endless embarrassing photos of her learning how to walk in heels. Maximoff is mainly based off the Wanda from MCU with inspiration from Marvel Rivals cause I loved what they did with her hair in that game. I put her in the outfit that you described in one of the earlier chapter cause I really liked it. Also, she's wearing roller skates in Wanda's color cause I head canon that Maximoff would love roller skating. Girl would zooming around for hours and would come out looking like she just lost a bar fight since she's terrible at braking but she had the best time so she doesn't even care. I wanted to put some white in her hair to call back to Quicksilver and Speed, but I didn't want it looking like Cruella Deville or Jason or Rogue. And, I once saw someone put white highlights for the bottom chuck of hair, so we went with that. Kind of like the idea that she wasn't born with white hair and showed up over time after her powers showed up.Ā Ā
Also the background is green (I wanted it to be a lighter green, but I really didn't wanna repaint it since I did that last. I'm still figuring out how to paint.) because I associate both of them with the color green. Don't ask me why cause I couldn't tell you.Ā
Then, the other piece I did after reading chapter 13 part 2. I wanted to show what I thought Maximoff would be looking like at this point in the story, but also what Wayne would want to be looking like. Also had to add the sketches I did. A little teaser at the bottom of me figuring out my design for ghost Wayne. I was gonna try and make it to add with this, but I didn't know your stance on blood in fanart.Ā
This version of Wayne is her without the insecurities and family trauma. You mention how Wayne liked the colors white and lilac, so I ran with that but also just gave her some purple. Steph isn't here so Wayne gets to be your resident purple girly. Her skin actually has color now instead of being gray and she let her natural hair color grow out. I know cutting someone's hair to represent a new start is over played, but I don't care. I love the idea that she cut all the hair that she dyed black to completely cut herself off from the Batfam. Also, she's actually has some personal style now! The hops are there as a kind of tie in Warren since I saw in some of his costumes he has a halo design. And of course I had to give her a sun necklace for the tarot cards.
Since this is Maximoff in Wayne's body, I wanted them to be same skin tone to really show the difference between the past look and new (andĀ definitely not cause I didn't wanna search for my other marker. No, why would you ever say that?). There is still a lot of black in her hair, but some of the natural color is popping out. Her shirt is based off of Quicksilver and she has the same jacket she was wearing in the other piece. I didn't mean to make the jeans a dark blue since that's kind of Bruce's color, but we're going to say that it's call to Billy. Also, the shoes are based off the ones Quicksilver wears in the Age of Ultron movie. And, the bracelet is my best attempt at adding the wheel of fortune to her design. I was debating adding a piercing or two as a call to Connor, then completely forgot to add it.Ā
The background is still green. And I love their outfits cause I know if the Batfam saw them in this, they would have a heart attack. The whole fam would be trying to get them cover up and the girls would be so mad!Ā
I just love this story and I can't wait for each chapter to come out! Gonna get some sleep then read the new chapter tomorrow!
Okay, so I wanted to take my time to answer this because I cannot stress enough how much I love and appreciate that you went into so much detail and explaining this beautiful art from your vision.
In the first art, the one on how you visualize the girls before this whole drama started, has me wailing and sobbing. Wayne looking so formal and pale and so detached (MY SHAYLAAAaA-) and how Maximoff resembles Wanda so much (The hair part is genius and my god, im so ready to finally get to the part in the fic where she dyes it and cuts it because she is not having a good time with long hair-(The silver hair is happening, blame Pietro's genes)) (I also love how Wanda looks in rivals. GET ME MY ROMANI QUEEN-)
Also, how dare you look into my notes. We are having a roller skating scene next chapter! MIND READER!!!
The little references and details, Im eating it all up and I CAN"T STRESS IT ENOUGH!!! I want to go bit by bit but I don't want to spoil anything yet so I'll zip my mouth. (You got so many things right ong-)
And the most recent art: My girl Wayne looks so good with color and life in her, I am so unwell. She looks so fashionable with those clothes and colors (MY GIRL IS STYLISH AND I WILL FIGHT YOU ON THAT-). The sun necklace, more on that soon but let me just appreciate and sob over it. Don't worry about the hair, I ADORE IT!! And the wheel of fortune on a bracelet, I'm not okay, alright?
You are so right on the batfam having heart attacks seeing them like this (They will be so annoying when the gala chapter comes around-)
I would love to into more details and deep dive into my notes but SPOILERSSS!!!
I love you, your art and I hope you will continue on with the story because your mind is just brilliant.
SENDING YOU SO MUCH LOVE!!!šŸ’–āœØšŸ’•šŸ„¹

okay so I saw someone else do this and I wanted to throw my fuck ass opinions out there but here are my hcs for what piercings I think RE characters would get
JILL — easily, she'd have a tongue piercing. for exactly the reasons you'd think. in my mind she is a massive stone top lesbian so a tongue piercing is just a no brainer for her. I'd think she'd keep it from ages 19—23, then resident evil shenanigans happen and her piercing gets taken out, and I don't think she'd be bothered to put it back in during death island. although 47 year old stone top futch lesbian Jill Valentine with her tongue piercing back in and maybe a nose stud just feels right in my soul.
CLAIRE — nose stud, double helix piercings on one ear, I feel like she'd love a conch piercing but got too scared to actually get it. I could also see her getting a medusa or monroe lip piercing? similar to Jill, I think her peak ages of getting and keeping her piercings would be ages 18—26, but she does strike me as the person to have diyed her first piercing during a social studies class when she was like 14. just got bored and took a safety pin through her nostril. skipped school with a friend, bought a stud at the mall meant for ears, came home to her parents furious that she "did that to her beautiful face". cue doors slamming, screaming, and eventually making up with them but agreeing to no more piercings until she was 18. (it didn't last)(she got her helix pierced at 16)(didn't wear her hair up for a month)
ADA — Lobes. That's it. In her line of work she can't risk having anything coming out during a mission. But I like to think she tells people she's got piercings just to mess with them. Like she'll tell them she has a tongue piercing and when they get into it, she just laughs like "lmao bitch you thought". love her for that tho. but I do think she would have at least contemplated getting a navel piercing cus she thinks other women look hot as fuck with them (she's not wrong)(she's a little gay).
REBECCA — SEPTUM! There is no universe in which I don't think Rebecca is a non binary starbucks employee who got caught up in government work, that pixie cut does NOT LIE. she would use she/they/he/xer pronouns, have their septum pierced, double brow piercings, cheek piercings, and maybe a smiley for a period of time. but alas... this is resident evil :( but I do think she would've had a labret at some point before having to take it out for her job.
ASHLEY — oh this girl is scemo in my heart and soul I can just feel it with her so hard!!! she's ambitious with her piercing wants, but her fear of needles is low-key against her with this one chief. this girl would want every square inch of her ears pierced, she wants lobes, helix, industrials, orbitals, a conch piercing, a tragus piercing- but really she's only got her lobes pierced, and two helix's on one ear. she found out she doesn't have the ear for industrial piercings and rightfully crashed out (I'm projecting). she also wants pretty much her entire face pierced but can never work herself up for it, I love her sm <3
CHRIS — this man strikes me as a RAGING homosexual, like you cannot tell me this man does not host on his off days/vacations. he's got an army of bears, twinks, otters and dads ready to go to WAR on his behalf I just KNOW IT. that said: this man has nipple piercings absolutely. and that's it. nothing else. no lobes, no lip piercings, just straight into getting his nipples done. did it hurt? he couldn't tell you. he passed out. you could probably talk him into getting his foreskin pierced, but still, his pain tolerance is dog shit.
LEON — hot take but I don't think he'd get any piercings. I know! I know! we've all seen the art of Leon with snake bites, I know! but younger Leon's sense of self was wayyy too fragile like he was the pretty boy in his police training academy right through to his adulthood, if he even got his lobes pierced I swear to you he would have been actually hate crimed for being gay- (disaster bisexual but still). but yeah, he's definitely thought about getting snake bites before, and I could see him getting a vertical labret during a dip in activity (if ever that would happen) during infinite darkness just to satisfy his curiosity... he ended up taking it out after he tried to pick up a woman and she looked at his piercing funny :(
ALBERT — hear me out...... just..just head me out on this one...........I won't explain this... but.......sp...split tongue........ split tongue wesker.... no I will not elaborate, I just feel like it would fit. I feel it in my gut. there's really not much else I feel like I can say? he seems like a very practically minded character, so I can't see him even wanting to get his lobes pierced because they "serve no functional purpose". a split tongue is a major body mod yes, but it's also subtle and can go largely unnoticed in a professional setting.
LUIS — tongue piercing. whore. no explanation. (whore is affectionate btw).

I'm so haunted by bossman and dave acknowledging that the player won't be coming back by the final story mission
"[Dave] You've been good to me and my lads, (player). When you're ready, l'll have you out there in two shakes."
"[Player] Watch this place for me while I'm gone." "[Bossman] Everytime, chief."
dave tells them about how ominous the point right before the nowhere is, but accepts that they'll go back. bossman can tell it's the end, but doesn’t stop them. the player treated them right, so they'll trust whatever it is they're going to do, even if it means they'll never see them again
it was bad enough when you think about them wondering if the player will ever come back because they didn't know this mission was the final one. but i feel like it's a different type of pain to know but still hope that someone will come back.
because what then?
dave comes back to base without the player. the hirelings and reinforcements ask about them, but what can he even say?
the final batch of hireling applicants that the player was supposed to look over are still there at the lobby. they don't understand why bossman is telling them to leave, that the player is never coming back
it's not like they can explain it to skinner, pava and bert either. all of them, bossman and dave included, are here because the player needed them, what now when no one is there to call the shots?
one day dave will be sitting at the building's edge, right where he can see the bus stop. maybe, just maybe, the bus will drop the player off (or that strange guy will swerve to the entrance with his car, who knows?). he'll laugh and clap them on the back, tell them they're ready for another perfectly safe and non alcoholic flight and the player, deadpan as ever, will still hop on without a second thought
bossman suddenly shows up even when he's usually always at the lobby. he and dave catch sight of each other for less than a second, but they both know they're thinking about the same thing
(bossman stays there, he stays even as the money the player left dries up and hq goes back to how it was before they came along, abandoned and filthy. he would never break his promise to them. not as long as he can help it. if he's lucky, the player will walk right up to the door again, chide him for letting the place fall apart, and bossman will snap back about them taking so long before grabbing a broom once again and welcoming them back)
bossman sits next to him and stares at the bus stop too
