Okay my review of the Marigold presser is that if you already aren't or have never been passionate about Stardom they 100% did not show anything new or different enough from that to be exciting, but if you might have interest in Somehow Even More Stardom like me I'm cautiously optimistic, with a guarantee of absolutely more of Rossy's complete bullshit than ever given it's not even day one yet and he absolutely decimated the Act Wres roster + poached Fuka back up to boot. The Chanoyu Hyaku-shu [茶湯百首], Part II:  Poem 42.

〽 Furo no sumi miru-goto ha nashi minu-tote mo          minu-koso nao mo miru-kokoro nare

    [風爐の炭見る事は無し見ぬとても          見ぬこそ猶も見る心なれ].

    “There is no inspection of the charcoal in the furo; nevertheless, even though it [will] not [be] looked at, all the more [the way the host arranges] it should be done as if it were going to be seen [by the guests].”

    The convention of the guests inspecting the arrangement of the charcoal arose because, in the 4.5-mat room, the ro is in the middle of the room, so the host’s actions (which, as it were, take place on center-stage) naturally provoke their interest.  But this was something rather unique to the setting.  Before Jōō cut an irori in his tea room, chanoyu had always been performed using the daisu, in which setting the interior of the furo (which is elevated above floor level even higher than otherwise) is much less accessible.  Even if the guests were to move close, they would be unable to see what the host was doing clearly¹.

    Nevertheless, even though it cannot be seen, the host should always take care to arrange the fire as attractively as possible because this ��attractiveness” really means that the arrangement of charcoal will catch fire easily, heat the water efficiently, and then continue to burn until the service of usucha is concluding.  An arrangement like this will look good, while an “unattractive” arrangement will likely fail precisely because the charcoal will not catch fire and burn as hoped.

    And this brings us to consider another key idea that is touched on in this poem:  whether or not anyone will see something, or take notice, everything should always be done as if the guests were going to look at the action (and its result) closely -- because the way of doing something that is considered the most attractive way is always the right way, because the right way is the one that will perform most effectively, whether we are talking about the arrangement of the charcoal, or the way to put the matcha into the chaire or natsume, or, indeed, the way to perform the motions of the temae.  This was how things were done when the monk was going to serve tea to the Buddha² (even when no other people were going to be present); and this was the reason why Sen no Dōan created the Dōan-gakkoi [道安圍い]:  not to hide his faults (as the Sen family foolishly claimed in their attempts to discredit and detract from the accomplishments of Rikyū’s son in favor of themselves, who followed the teachings of Imai Sōkyū), but so that he could concentrate on performing the actions properly without having to distract himself with thoughts of what the guests might be thinking.  When we eliminate the deliberately performative aspect from what we do, and then do everything fully and correctly, we will come one step closer to the realization of chanoyu samādhi -- which should always be our goal.

    Jōō‘s original verse differs very slightly from the others:

〽 furo ni te ha sumi ha naki-mono minu-tote mo          minu-koso nao mo miru to shiru-beshi

    [風爐にては炭はなきもの見ぬとても          見ぬこそ猶も見ると知るべし].

    Furo ni te ha [風爐にては] means “in the case of the furo...,” “with the furo....”

    Sumi ha naki-mono [炭はなきもの] means “the charcoal (is something that) is hidden;” “the charcoal (is something that) is concealed.”

    Minu-tote mo [見ぬとても] means “even though it is not seen....”

    Minu-koso nao mo [見ぬこそ猶も] means “even if it is not seen, still...,” or, “even if it is not seen, in any case....”

    Miru to shiru-beshi [見ると知るべし] means “(the host) should assume³ that it could be seen, so (you) should understand.”

    The later, more common, version of this poem takes the same idea and rephrases it in more approachable language, making its teaching a little easier for the beginner to understand.

¹And, of course, once the kama has been replaced on the kimen-buro, the arrangement of the charcoal becomes completely invisible to everyone -- and remains that way to the end of the gathering.

    As an aside, regarding the kan that are attached to the kimen kan-tsuki of this kind of furo (whether it is made of bronze or of iron), their usual position should be as shown, depending from the kan-tsuki.  They are raised only when a nobleman is present in the room (and, according to Rikyū, if that person enters after the temae has begun, the host should undertake to raise them as soon as possible; and if the nobleman leaves before the temae is over, the host should likewise lower the kan as soon thereafter  as possible).

    When offering tea to the Buddha, however, they would probably be raised throughout the temae.

²Chanoyu began as the simple act of offering a bowl of tea to the Buddha with the whole of one’s being.  But “the Buddha” is an image.  As such, it can neither observe what the monk is doing, nor receive and drink the tea that is offered -- and the image has no opinion about the rightness or wrongness of any of this.  Yet the monk was supposed to make his preparations as carefully and correctly as possible, and then perform the temae flawlessly, even though the only entities in the room were himself and the image of the Buddha.

    This is the mind that we should bring into the tea room.  It is the reason why, even though most of what he does will not be seen, the host should always perform everything as if the smallest detail was going to be inspected minutely.

³Miru [見る], while it literally means look (at), the word also includes nuances such as “presume,” “take for granted,” “assume” -- that something can be seen.

    In other words, Jōō is saying that even though the arrangement of the charcoal in the furo is something that is hidden, nevertheless the host should arrange it based on the presumption that the guests will (somehow) manage to see it.
