Jano his mark.
Narragansett. A signatory here on a deed also signed by Miantonomo, Pumham and Totanoman (all marks we have shared previously).
The deed describes “one parcel of lands…lyinge uppon the west syde of that part of the sea called Sowhanes Bay, from Copassanatuxett, over against a little island in the sayd bay, being the north bounds, and the outmost point that neck of land called Shawhomet.” This area is now referred to as “Warwick, Rhode Island.”
Signed January 12, 1642. Seen at the John Carter Brown Library.

🌟 Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day! 🌾
Today, we celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Native American peoples. 🌄 It's a day to honor the resilience and beauty of the indigenous communities that have shaped and continue to enrich our nation. 🌿
Let's take a moment to acknowledge the wisdom, artistry, and deep connection to the land that indigenous people carry with them. 🏞️
As we commemorate this day, let's also recognize the importance of land rights, the preservation of traditions, and the ongoing struggles faced by many indigenous communities. 🌎

"The Healer Between Heartbeats"
They say the hummingbird came from the breath between worlds — too fast to be caught, too gentle to be feared.
She appears where pain settles quietly, where the air holds memory. Her wings do not fight the wind — they weave through it, stitching together what was torn by time.
The elders believe she carries the voices of those who left too soon. Not to speak for them, but to remind us: love never leaves, it just changes shape.
Her feathers shimmer with stories. Her flight is a prayer.
She doesn’t stay long. Healing never does.
But where she lands, something begins again.
They call her Teyána — The One Who Touches Without Bruising.

“The One Who Brings Light from the Shadows”
— A Raven Legend
They say the Raven was not born in light.
It was born in darkness, where secrets, pain, and truth are hidden.
But instead of fleeing, it learned to listen —
to hear what light could never touch.
In the stories of the Native people, the Raven is a carrier of ancient knowledge,
not from books, but from what others overlook:
the wind blowing the wrong way, the footsteps of a lost soul,
and dreams never spoken aloud.
Its feathers — though black — shimmer with the colors of dusk, fire, and earth.
Because Raven is not a harbinger of death, as many believe,
but rather the guardian of rebirth.
The elders call it Takuah —
“The One Who Finds Light in the Dark.”
If you see a Raven, don’t chase it away.
It may carry a message — not from this world,
but from the place your soul once belonged.

Warriors are not what you think of as warriors. The warrior is not someone who fights, because no one has the right to take another life. The warrior, for us, is one who sacrifices himself for the good of others. His task is to take care of the elderly, the defenseless, those who cannot provide for themselves, and above all, the children, the future of humanity. —Sitting Bull (c. 1831 - 1890), Hunkpapa Sioux...

Polyamory in 1908
I'm reading an autobiography by "two single ladies" who lived together and shared a bed for their entire adult lives (over five decades). They went to live in a part Northern California where there were few white people. There, they wore "split skirts" and made friends with a local indigenous family (Klamath tribe) that had a wife and two husbands. They observed:
"Of course, if Mart and Essie and Les are all satisfied, it really does seem as though it were their own personal concern. On the other hand, two husbands at the same time would scarcely be tolerated in most white communities." The book is "In the Land of the Grasshopper Song: Two Women in the Klamath River Indian Country in 1908-1909" by Mary Ellicott Arnold and Mabel Reed

•The life of John Horse structures the trail narrative and stands as the consummate expression of the Black Seminoles' nineteenth-century odyssey. •Though not widely known, this black pioneer's life forms one of the most heroic chapters of frontier America -- an Homeric hymn to the ideals, injustice, and complexities of the American experiment. Via Seminole Nation Museum #Black #Seminoles, also called #SeminoleMaroons or #SeminoleFreedmen, a group of free blacks and runaway slaves (#maroons) that joined forces with the Seminole Indians in Florida from approximately 1700 through the 1850s. The #BlackSeminoles were celebrated for their bravery and tenacity during the three Seminole Wars. Via Encyclopedia Britannica •Born in Spanish Florida in 1812 of allegedly mixed #African and #Indian ancestry, John Horse rose to prominence during the Second #SeminoleWar (1835-1842). Several times during the conflict, his daring exploits sparked new life into the allied #Seminole resistance. By 1837, he led the black portion of the uprising in the climactic Battle of Lake Okeechobee. More than any other leader, his actions helped produce the promise of freedom that the U.S. Army extended to black rebels to close out their portion of the war. •For forty years after the rebellion, #JohnHorse led his followers in #Oklahoma, #Texas, and #Mexico as they overcame slave raiders, corrupt politicians, and hostile Native Americans in their pursuit of a free homeland. •Out west, with strong ties to both the Army and the Seminole tribal leadership, John Horse could have pursued security for himself and his family. Instead, he chose to pursue the wider good of his community. This course of action nearly got him killed on several occasions, but it ultimately allowed him to contribute to the lives of all Americans by advancing the cause of national freedom. •Not only did John Horse's actions save hundreds of lives from slavery, but his leadership, albeit anonymously, inspired the country's leading #abolitionists. Sachemus his mark
Presumably Wampanoag. Unfortunately, the top left portion of this land transfer document, and therefore much of the text, is missing from the Newberry Library’s copy. Another deed (also a later copy of an original) signed on the same date, complete but with different wording (so perhaps another land transfer facilitated by the same people on the same day) is part of the collection of the Sturgis Library (third slide). The Sturgis deed identifies Sachemus as the “Sachem of Satuckett” [sic] and the pictograph mark is the same. Here, Satuckett or Satucket is suggested to be the place now commonly referred to as “Dennis, Massachusetts.” Both signed December 3, 1663.
A copy of the original (first and second slides), seen at the Newberry Library.

“When the Hummingbird Came”
The day after she passed, the wind was still.
No song. No movement. Just silence.
But then, from the garden she once loved,
a hummingbird appeared —
tiny, glowing, alive with light.
It hovered in place, looking into the window,
as if waiting.
The elders say:
“When a hummingbird lingers, it carries the breath of someone you’ve loved.”
It did not speak, but I heard her.
Not in words, but in feeling.
In the way the wings moved — quick like her laughter.
In the way it stayed — gentle like her hands.
In the way it disappeared — quiet, like her goodbye.
Now, when I see a hummingbird, I smile.
Because I know:
Some love never leaves.
It just learns how to fly.
🙏
