recently just read gideon the ninth, and then in a fit of possession read through harrow the ninth within 48 hours... i am unwell

that awkward moment when you get forcemasc-ed by the vengeful spirit of your flamboyantly heterosexual bodyguard, whose soul you consumed by force after your twin sister (allegedly) stabbed him because she was jealous you didn’t want to consume her by force instead. that awkward moment when you’re trying to uphold space fascism but god keeps shagging all his subordinates and making your job very difficult. that awkward moment when your only friend in the universe is gods girlfail bastard child who is a literal corpse and also has the same ex-that-you-never-dated as you (who, as far as you know, did not actually want either of you on account of you not being one very specific corpse.)

The thing that absolutely kills me about Ianthe being a main character is that nobody fucking invited her. She’s not involved in this shit beyond her forcing herself into it. Harrow is connected to the soul of a murdered goddess who she’s also in love with, and Gideon’s the daughter of the man who murdered a planet to become god, and Ianthe is…? Here? I guess???

Ianthe has no connection to this plot, she’s got nothing to do with any of it, she’s just so FUCKING desperate for the spotlight to finally be on her that she’ll do anything for it.

Tamsyn Munir is just…so good man. After my reread of htn the one things that really stuck with me was that sense of frustrated helplessness I felt throughout the book. As a a reader you are basically just a passenger watching a character you have come to care so much about go through some of the hardest, most gruesome experiences of her life. Mentally and physically Harrow is being Put Through it, and while we are so close to her, exposed to her inner thoughts and how she is processing all of this, we’re still so far away. There’s nothing we can do to protect her in any way. We love her and there’s nothing we can do. This book is so good at making you feel desperate, like if you had one wish it would be to alter the rules of reality and pull Harrowhark Nonagesimus out of her own reality to provide her some relief for once in her life!!! But we can only watch everything unfold.

And then you realize…this is what it means to be Gideon Nav. Stuck in that alive/unalive, subconscious/unconscious state…feeling helpless right alongside Harrow, but not really alongside her…but also closer than you’ve ever been to her…sighhh

Nona as a character is so fascinating to me when you consider her as a foil to Alecto’s history. Because, when you get down to it, Alecto was Nona all those thousands of years ago.

Consider Alecto, who rose from the shattered remains of the Earth, whose body was new and massive and unwieldy, who only existed because of her creator’s cosmic overindulgence and still knew love. Love!! Knew it so well that she chose it, even to her detriment, every single time. In response, the world around her —the Lyctors especially— rejected her for it because they saw her devotion as stupidity. And Jod, who claims to love her, locked her away, entombing her because he saw his love as a weapon to be used against him. And from what we see of Alecto when she’s awake in the Locked Tomb (especially when she bites Harrow) she’s grown sharper and crueler because of these rejections.

Similarly, Nona, having been slammed into a body that was not hers, with no memory and no faculties ALSO chooses unyielding love. But where Jod and his disciples rejected such “foolishness,” Cam, Pal, Pyhrra, and Nona’s Gang all accept it with open arms. They plan a birthday party for her and make silly jokes and check in on her and always say “I love you” back. They spend every day nurturing her the best they can.

Even in Nona’s final moments, these people tell her, “we love you. We will always love and remember you. That’s what matters.” And that’s what gives Nona the strength to make it to the Body, to do an act so terrible it will erase her. She does it because she is loved.

And now Alecto lives, ancient, undying, and so unloved.

While reading the locked tomb so far I had this inside joke where, every time something unexplainable happened or someone appeared whose name we don’t know, I’d just say “oh that’s Gideon’s mom obviously”

Now imagine my surprise in the last 100 pages of Harrow the Ninth
