An idea which came to me through filling in the gaps of my Sherlock Holmes chronology: which places The Dying Detective (DYIN) in November 1890, followed by The Final Problem (FINA) naturally on the 4th of May 1891. The former is stated by Watson as having occurred “in the second year of [his] marriage”, and on a “foggy November day”. I chose to place it during the second year of his marriage to Mary rather than the second unnamed wife, because I found it narratively provocative.

            Watson states, “I find that in the year 1890 there were only three cases of which I retain any record” (FINA), and November being so late in the year, it’s a fair assumption to make that they did not see each other for the rest of that year. It is also made clear that Holmes and Watson had zero contact in 1891 up until April, when FINA begins. Summarily, I state that there was no contact between these two cases.

            DYIN and FINA is, of course, significant because they are the two instances of Holmes making pretence of his death, but there is extra room for interesting narrative. In DYIN, it’s a ploy for attention, happening while Watson is away from Baker Street, where Holmes feels a need to take drastic measures to prove Watson still cares for him. However, in FINA, there is less choice in the matter. Hunted by Moriarty’s agents, he avoids Watson altogether to ensure his friend's safety. By this reading, a cruel stunt Holmes played for selfish satisfaction so soon becomes a necessary course of action for his friend’s safety, and it must hurt.

            The real biter here is: How long will it take for Watson to believe the note left at Reichenbach? With DYIN still as his freshest memory of their last case, it would be met with scepticism. At what point does he actually accept Holmes’s death? No doubt Holmes would realise and fret over this, too.

            So I’m just saying, if I were a TV writer, I would absolutely harness this information with relish. Does it actually need the deeply detective-Sherlockian justification? No, but it’s what gave me the idea. Crazy how Doyle made such crazy angst only revealed when we apply Holmes’s methods to the text he comes from…

So I got curious and looked at LoA stats on ao3

In terms of regular popularity, to the surprise of nobody, the top ship is Romantic Coalecroux at 327 fics (at the time of writing this). Second place is Grimmorning with 119 fics, and third place is Platonic Coalecroux with 103 fics

In terms of non Witchlight ships on here, Platonic Shepnax comes in at the top with 53 fics, followed by Lethicus with 55 fics, and Romantic Shepnax with 45 fics (we need to up that number yall, tsk tsk)

If we look at characters, curiously enough, Gideon is the most popular with 566 fics, Kremy following behind with 546 fics, and Gricko coming in third with 441 fics.

As far as non Witchlight characters go, Shepherd is the most popular at 187 fics, followed by Skrimm with 171 fics, Marius with 170 fics, and Taishen with 153 fics (what I am gathering here is that we like Andy’s characters and also Fire Bois)
