I’m sorry friends, but “just google it” is no longer viable advice. What are we even telling people to do anymore, go try to google useful info and the first three pages are just ads for products that might be the exact opposite of what the person is trying to find but The Algorithm thinks the words are related enough? And if it’s not ads it’s just sponsored websites filled with listicles, just pages and pages of “TOP FIFTEEN [thing you googled] IMAGINED AS DISNEY PRINCESSES” like… what are we even doing anymore, google? I can no longer use you as shorthand for people doing real and actual helpful research on their own.

Why I am a NERD

Okay, so I noticed that I haven't really posted the basics of who I am.  I mean you have gotten the gist that I am a kid at college where lots of interesting things happen, in a committed relationship, and I used to love a man who is into other men, but what about my choice  in blog title "Look At Me I Am A Nerd"? I mean a lot of the stuff I have posted so far has been related to relationships and sex-stuff, not what you would associate with the stereotypical nerd.    Here I will provide some evidence of why I am such a nerd, and am basically as my boyfriend once described me, "like the sexy librarian in a 80s college movie."  

Well nerdom is measured by different factors.  But in terms of intelligence and loving to learn about stuff, you might consider the fact that I recently won college Dux. I study archaeology and palaeoanthropology with minors in sociology and ancient history.  Basically I am passionate about studying human culture from the prehistoric to the present.  People at college have become aware of my study habits and freshers have since approached me with "hey, you're that smart chick".  You may also consider this as a reason for calling me 'nerd'.  More than one of them have said this with a drunken slur to completely sober me.  My  practice of abstaining from alcohol has also given me a reputation for either being a goody-goody and/or SMART.

Then there are of course my other interests.  Lots of people have their thing that they geek out over, and for me the main thing is STEPHEN KING.  One of the first things people notice when they come into my room are the number of Stephen King books and films I have and the two huge posters of Carrie on my wall.  I could talk for hours about Stephen King, but I will save you from that, unless you leave a comment requesting some of my opinions.  I am currently reading The Stand, the 70s version I took off my grandmother's bookshelf.  And later when I manage to have the time, I will read the 1990s unabridged version, so I will appreciate it more, hopefully. So far I LOVE IT as any Stephen King nerd should.

This is a photo taken from the first edition of The Dark Half I found in an op shop for two whole Australian dollars.  I really adore these somewhat awkward photographs that take up the whole back cover on some of his publications. How can you not love this guy?  

One of the other posters on my wall is a map of middle earth that was given to me as a gift by my boyfriend. Indeed our friendship grew when I was in the process of reading The Lord of the Rings in high school, and he constantly saw me sitting distanced from everyone at bus lines nose deep in old library book pages and would ask me how the book was going.  Being super enthusiastic about fantasy stories has in the past been a classic indicator of nerdom.  

I recently joined a live action role playing group at uni where I play a vampire.  It's like adults playing a huge game of pretend and is actually a lot of fun.  It is a group usually associated with neckbeards and people who don't know how to socialise normally, and well , nerds.  But I have met a lot of fun and interesting people from all kinds of backgrounds.  Not going to lie though, this odd guy with purple hair has taken an unnervingly enthusiastic liking towards me and talks about how cute I am every time he sees me.  I am not sure how to politely tell him to go away.  Perhaps I will write more about this later.  

My boyfriend and I have often had conversations of a very nerdy or geeky subject matter, like he was telling me about this game he had been playing where he fought off dragons and we discussed dragon mythology and I was telling him how I had just been LARPing as a vampire, and the lore of the vampires in the game.  He said "Listen to us.  How are either of us having sex?"  Sometimes talking nerdy can be just as exciting as talking dirty when you are like me.
