The Abominable Dr. Phibes  (1971, Robert Fuest)

I guess the Halloween season is a perfect time to note the 50th anniversary of this campy, clever vehicle for Vincent Price.

It’s some silly fun that uniquely combines an Art Deco aesthetic with the adolescent grand guignol vibe of E.C. Comics. Basil Kirchin’s lush score adds to the richness. There are all kinds of winking, knowing flourishes throughout. Having the investigators berated at one point for showing up only after someone else gets dead is a sly, inside jibe at the director, who helmed a few episodes of the iconic British TV crime series “The Avengers.” Another nice touch is the clockwork “house band” for Dr. Anton Phibes’ palatial estate. Or the curtains on each door and window of Phibes’ Rolls-Royce, illustrated with side and rear views of the man himself (Wes Anderson, take note). Any time that limo heads out across the English countryside, well, it’s not for a Sunday drive.

There were complaints at the time that Vincent Price’s most distinct quality, his voice, could not be exploited for this character. Price compensates, however, with his eyes, a few odd pauses, and a menacing, fully theatrical physicality. For example, Phibes observes from a distance (via telescope) a victim’s biplane that he’s tricked out with another elaborate trap. When the plane makes a fiery crash, he swirls the telescope on its tripod and begins applauding.

But if we come to this picture to see the mad doctor, we stay for the even more bizarre Vulnavia, who is Phibes’ surgical assistant and devoted Girl Friday. She’s especially captivating when sweeping the ballroom after hours, or when she’s out for an afternoon fall stroll. Yes, Vulnavia’s a murderous little minx with ice in her veins, but style points where style points are due, I always say. She was born to wear that black fur ushanka and velvet cape with brocade appointments—and her handsome little greyhound sports a suede collar. Vulnavia was an artist with fox fur—even during off days. I think of her whenever it snows.

🎃 Pumpkin: Favourite season? spring, because it’s my birthday... and usually the first days of spring are rainy, but then it’s sunny and not very hot yet, so i can dress in layers but i can still bask in the sunshine. i really like autumn too, because while at first it’s too hot to do anything, when it starts to cool down it’s a delight

👻 Ghost: Do you get scared easily? it really depends... for some reason gore doesn’t faze me much, and i’ve become kind of desensitized to a lot of typical horror stuff. but i’m terrified of r*pe scenes, they leave me very nervous and in general a lot of realistic horror, like abuse, torture and the like, gets me very anxious and stressed... i don’t know if i’d call that fear exactly, but if it does, then yeah, i’m a scaredy cat :^/

🎃 Candy Corn: What’s your favourite kind of candy? dark chocolate!! i love really bitter chocolate, or chocolate covered peanuts -that’s what i used to ask for when i went out with my family to the cinema

👻 Vampire: What is your favourite supernatural creature? any sort of manmade creature!!! i really like automata, frankenstein monsters, golems, creepy dolls... but i also love the concept and the symbolism of ghosts and haunted houses......

🎃 Witch: If you could have any superpower, what would it be? i really don’t know... there’s so much i’d like to do... i’d love to be able to speak any language, but i think it’s not really a superpower? since this is halloween themed, i’d have to say telekinesis (matilda was one of my favorite childhood books) and being able to shrink. i’d love to be small as a mouse and wander around the house

👻 Trick or treat: What was your favourite Halloween costume? i dressed as a witch several times!! we don’t celebrate halloween here in argentina, but still there were some birthdays or club parties which were kind of a replacement halloween celebration?? once i went as candy-skull-frida kahlo, and i still think that was my most complex costume... but i really loved dressing up as a witch when i was little, with my green and black striped socks and my witch hat and my long sleeved black top >:^)

👻 Ouija Board: If you could change your name, what would you change it to? i used to hate my name casandra, because everyone was called camila or martina or daniela or more “normal” names, and i thought mine was weird... but i still wanted to stand out, so i pretended my second name was miranda, for some reason?? and for some time i was convinced i should change my name to miranda. but after a few years ive grown to like my name, even if i think it does sound kinda pretentious (my parents gave it to me, so its not my fault!!). i’ve also grown to like the other name they would have given me, bruna, which at first i hated but now i kinda love?? maybe i’d change it to that. but i like my name, currently

🎃 Graveyard: Do you know any good scary stories? hmmm the only one that’s like, a scary story, is one i was obsessed with, that was in a book at my school library -i think it’s pretty well known -about the girl with the green ribbon tied around her neck, who has a boyfriend that asks her why she wears it, and she doesn’t say, until she’s in her deathbed and she tells him he can take her ribbon off and he does and the girl’s head falls off. that story lived in my head 24/7, along with actual short stories like the black cat, the telltale heart, the oval portrait, the masque of the red death... i considered metamorphosis by franz kafka a horror story, too, so i guess i’ll add it here. oh, i know!!!!!! one that i think a lot of people don’t know about. the feather pillow, by horacio quiroga. a young couple move to the countryside, and while the husband is away at work, the woman stay at home all the time. the woman falls ill, and the doctor tells her to stay in bed and rest. she gets worse and worse, and withers away. her husband worries but doesn’t know what is going on. the woman finally dies, and when the maid is about to clean the sheets, she notices that the pillow is extremely heavy. and then -she and the husband and the doctor realize -there was a tick, a blood-sucking bug inside the pillow, a typical goose tick that, when given time, can drain a whole person of all their blood it’s better the way the author wrote it, i think i’m selling it short

👻 Skeleton: Have you ever broken a bone? no, i never did anything that could lead to that {:^) when i was younger i climbed trees and played in parks and stuff, but i never played any sports that could make me break a bone... i did break my knee or something?? i can’t remember, but my knee was sort of displaced during a school camping trip in which i got out of the shower and slipped badly

🎃 Werewolf: What is your favourite urban legend? oooooo there’s a bunch from the local high-class cemetery, the Recoleta Cemetery (though i can’t remember any of them very well), where there’s a lot of great urban legends, most of them from the nineteenth or early twentieth century, like one of two star crossed lovers -a young woman who fell for a french soldier visiting argentina -and when he died in the battlefield, she died as well and haunts her grave ever since... or, well, the famous ones like whatever happened to evita’s corpse, which is kind of squicky but still sort of morbidly fascinating??

👻 Broomstick: What exciting places have you travelled to? i really enjoyed istanbul, with all the cats and the beautiful architecture, i’d like to go back ;_; but i also loved prague a lot, we went in winter and it was all snowy and lit at night and it was such a beautiful place... portugal was a surprise, i liked it a lot more than i expected!!! i miss edinburgh a lot, too, even if it’s a bit too stuffy for me, i still liked it.... and berlin, i think i was in berlin for too short a time. i loved the cinema museum so much, and everyone was so nice, and the city has so much fascinating history... and i also miss athens -again, i was surprised, and i spent very little time there, but everything, the ruins, the modern city, the people, everything was gorgeous and wonderful... and dublin!!!!! dublin was amazing!! i’ve travelled a lot. i want to keep travelling. this year my family and i were supposed to go to russia, and i’m still kinda eager to go.

I’m really, really thinking about finally getting rid of my magazine collection, whether it’s like attempt to sell them on eBay or the more likely scenario, just chuck em all in the recycling bin. Nothing says hoarder with issues like “my magazine collection.”

Same with my cd collection. Like either keep 100 or less, put the keepers in a binder then get rid of the cd cases. I have like two long bins full of CDs, that’s what 20+ years of collecting will do.

Same with some of my DVDs and books, although I kind of think the Hollywood library would accept the film books that are just rotting on my shelf.

I just want like a more tighter and smaller collection of all these things.

I’ve been doing a little better at trying to have a smaller (and smarter) collection of video games as I’ve continued my rekindled return to gaming. Like my movie collection, I’ve also made some wiffs where after a few minutes of trying a game out I’m like ugh this was a mistake, I gotta get this game outta here! Like the Nickelodeon ninja turtles game on Wii, ugh so bad. And there’s a neat Super Mario Bros Wii game that’s kind of like the old Nintendo style ones but to do a special spin move you have to shake the Wii controller and nunchuck which reminded me of why I put the Wii in the closet years ago lol. The Goldeneye remake is ok though. And I learned like earlier this year that the Wii I have can also play GameCube games! I didn’t know this a decade ago, ugh. But it’s neat that it does, I’m also impressed that my Wii still works. Mostly works. I do think I might have a laser issue because a different ninja turtles and a Carmen San Diego game, both GameCube games, didn’t work despite the disc looking pretty clean. X men legends 1 and nfl blitz 2003 did work so it might be a disc which would suck.

Like a few weeks ago I had to stop watching the fancy Guns of Navarone 4K disc on my ps5 because it was starting to act glitchy for some reason an hour into the movie, they’d just got on the hill! Ugh! Again the disc looked good and I played it on the Xbox Series X and it worked fine, finished the movie there. Physical media is driving me batty!

That said, I’ll probably snag a few things at both the Kino sale and the Barnes and Noble criterion one. I have issues, I know but also I really want Pink Flamingos!! (And I kinda, possibly want Hot Saturday, the Dr. phibes dual pack, maybe My Little chickadee.) oh well!!

Lastly, I turned 39 (my god, it’s weird as fuck typing that out) on Wednesday and I intentionally skipped my high school reunion last weekend (it was the 20th and1 which is cute but I was like idk that’s too soon from the 15th and they wanted people to dress up in 1920’s style and I just didn’t wanna dress up plus I don’t think I’ve changed too much from six years ago so I was like I’m good. I’ll probably do the 25th, though, barring another pandemic because I’ll be over 40 by then and I’m confident that I’ll be at a different head space to where I am now. Plus I don’t completely hate or dislike everyone from my class so it’ll be nice to see the ones who aren’t on social media in a few years.

One of my FB friends who wished me happy bday was like you’re gonna feel the aches more! I wanted to snark reply back but it’s true! I have a lot of ups and downs with that stuff. I might have to like start doing more treatment stuff like massages or even those deep baths things (maybe just sit in a hot tub I guess, isn’t that supposed to be healthy? Or helpful for body recovery? idk). I have to sleep a bit better too as he types at 1 in the morning. I think overall though the mostly hardcore water drinking is helpful to me. Plus being a total square like not smoking or being prissy about alcohol has kept me feeling mostly good health wise. Mentally I’m somewhat okay, I try to check social media as quick dips in and out. Gaming is helpful too for me, like trying to figure stuff out, getting sucked in. It’s good times. With movies, I get a bit too nitpicky at times to enjoy em, like that line from Singin’ in the Rain “you’ve seen one, you’ve seen em all” has really hit me. Although I did want to see Crimes of the Future last month but it left theaters pretty quick. I’m supposed to see Marcel the Shell tonight with a friend, hopefully that’s good. I’ll rent Sonic 2. I didn’t like the trailers for either Malcolm’s First List or the Black Phone. I’m semi interested in Everything everywhere all at once, there has to be something to that movie since it’s still playing in theaters. Wasn’t crazy about that trailer either though. I’ll prolly hate myself later for seeing Thor next week. I haven’t seen any of the new Jurassic Park movies. Buzz light year seems like a ten minute watch on Disney Plus then don’t finish. I haven’t seen Top Gun 1 and I don’t think I could see 2 without seeing 1, although I’m now recalling that I wasn’t impressed with the planes flying around preview. Nope looks alright. Easter Sunday is a must see as a half Filipino. I probably won’t watch the Elvis movie, not crazy about Baz’s style but maybe I’ll see it on a whim. Maybe. Louis CK’s new movie is playing at the Laemmle theater in Santa Monica. That’s a no from me.

I’m going to two (!) comedy shows on Sunday, family is coming for lunch on Monday. I’m working later today and Saturday. anyways so that’s where I’m at. I haven’t done a stream or record a podcast yet but then on the to do list if you’ve made it this far. I did pitch my fake zoom dating show idea last weekend to my writing group and they liked it. The meeting got sidetracked like hell though so I have to do a better job letting tangents go, have fun and then pulling everyone back to working on the thing we want to make next. Now I have to write the script and send it em for feedback. I was surprised they liked the name Sting Ray, that’s the name of the host of the show. And that’s all I have for now lol byeeee.

finally watched the dead meat channel interview with don mancini and brad dourif (like a month later or sth) and as always even if i didnt like the season its nice to listen to creatives talk about stuff and such. but when dourif was asked what his favorite horror movie was he said sth along the lines of "hmm no too scary" and said his favorite one was abominable dr phibes??? hes a man of taste i see 😌👌🏼

Hello creatures of the night!! Halloween is approaching and the Abominable Dr. Phibes is on the home screen! 😈🎃🤘🏻What could be more fitting than to taste the ABOMINATION from the Lost Spirits Distillery in Monterey County California! NEVER tried this before! There has been much talk about this - it’s a kind of barley spirit speed metal matured under some sort of pressure for - was it six days??😱 this one is heavily peated it says. 54%vol and quite dark. Looks like a mix of sherry and Port - but I guess not😅 Matthew Venables thank you for this sample 😎 I try to be as open minded as possible - let’s just dive in! Woah - peat no doubt! Very clean maritime peat - sweet lemon sugar, red fruits, chalks, seashells, sweet Bourbon wood or oak, something a little like Lagavulin here - those minerals I mean. Very sweet really. Alcohol doesn’t sting at all. Green pears too, Ash, condensed red berries, all very nice indeed - it trails of a little quick. But let’s taste it neat!✌🏻😀 big hit of wood, perfumes roses, almost Bourbon-like but with less body, green apples again - in fact it’s quit light bodied - let’s try to shake it up with water. Still quite peaty on the nose, something sour, Chinese grocery store! A crushed bottle of mushroom soya in the corner too! Beefy notes too - me like!😊 again those chalky notes. Roasted cereals in the end. Another taste! It’s very much in the front of the mouth.another hit of Bourbon spice and sweet peat, wood and roasted sap. Very interesting indeed! The nose is very Islay to me - a young good one matured in a good active cask. The taste is more different - it doesn’t follow exactly what you get in the nose - and it is less oily than a Single Malt. Perhaps like a mix of Single Malt and Bourbon. The aftertaste fades quite quick but what it has it deliveres very nice indeed 😊 86/100
