Sometimes people leave you, halfway through the wood.
Do not let it grieve you, no one leaves for good.

More Assorted Emotions/Thoughts That Were Experienced During Into The Woods:
I really wasn’t expecting Cinderella to be as emotionally grueling a role as it ended up being for me, since while she does go through some pretty hard stuff there isn’t really anything particularly gut wrenching asked of the performer. However I SEVERELY underestimated the sheer sustained state of stress required by Act 2 of this show, especially the way I was playing Cinderella in particular as someone who is very anxious and hard on herself. Not to mention that we did a version of the show where the whole cast is onstage the ENTIRE time, so you don’t have any breaks where you can come down. The sheer adrenaline of it basically ends up convincing your body that the world is ending and it’s all your fault, which took a greater toll on me than I expected it to, and I learned a lot about how to give myself grace in the days following the show.
Into the Woods was my first show ever with a live orchestra, and since we staged it with the cast onstage the whole time, that meant I got to sit RIGHT in front of the string section and really gain a new appreciation for just how energetic and intricate Jonathan Tunick’s orchestrations were. Giants in the Sky in particular always got me- it’s never even been one of my favorite songs in the show but GOD if those strings don’t just make you feel like you’re soaring above the clouds. And that tiny little oh-so-satisfying rapidly descending line right before the first chorus! It just jolts you right awake- really makes you feel like a mischievous little scamp.
We performed the cut song Second Midnight, which is essentially a six minute exploration of the relationships between the children and parents in the cast. It has never been performed live with full orchestrations before, and I almost cried while performing it multiple times because of how special it was to be part of. It’s never been easier for me to know exactly why I’m in this line of work than when I heard the trumpet soaring above that last “children will listen” chorus for the first time.
The thing about No One Is Alone is that it’s so universal that it is always going to feel like it’s about now and it’s always going to feel like it’s about you, and it is therefore the easiest song to act in the WORLD. It is, however, one of the hardest things in the world not to look directly at your Republican parents in the audience on “people make mistakes, fathers, mothers… holding to their own, thinking they’re alone.”
We had a female baker, and she sang the entire show in the original octave pretty perfectly, until she did the most STUNNING octave jump in the final chorus, which was meant to be a character break (we did this show as students putting it on in quarantine, so when she sings in “girl” voice she’s singing as the student rather than the baker). It’s actually very very difficult for songs to make me cry, I think because I overthink all of my feelings and it’s very hard to turn my brain off listening to music, but “all the children” in No More ALWAYS wrecked me, because without fail it would make me think about queer kids.
I know that I have more thoughts, but I can’t think of them right now, so PLEASE feel free to ask me questions about the show, I’m dying to talk about it now that I’ve finally had enough time to make this post.

“you were born alone and you die alone” WRONG you were not born alone, no one on planet earth is born alone, it is quite literally impossible. your mother grew you inside her womb and then pushed you out of her own body, and if she didn’t push you out then a team of doctors took you out, but either way you were brought into this world with the help of your fellow human beings. you were born surrounded by people trying to help and you will likely die surrounded by people trying to help. there is no such thing as alone. we are all connected and we owe each other everything
#“you’re born alone” no the fuck you are NOT#what are you doctor doofenshmirtz?#nobody is born alone#no one comes into this world without the help of other people#you did not just pop into existence fully formed like a greek god#your parents created you#your mother grew you and carried you inside her womb#you were born from someone else’s body#shut the fuck up#no one is alone#positivity#positive affirmations#philosophy#you are not alone#positive thoughts#hope#hopecore#corecore#mental health#everything is connected#we are all connected#what we owe to each other#moral philosophy#morality#philosophical

I drew this one a while back inspired by one of the "No one is Alone" reprises from Into the Woods. Specifically the one after the Baker lost his wife and started to tell his son the story of the play. (Plus some special guests. XD)
I felt like Drac could relate to that for...obvious reasons.
Bonus: A new family portrait, and some old reminders of Martha, including the famous postcard, old family portrait, and Martha's book! Also, the family portrait says "My family" in both Romanian and Russian.

… Mother cannot guide you. Now you're on your own. Only me beside you. Still, you're not alone. No one is alone. Truly. No one is alone. Sometimes people leave you. Halfway through the wood. Others may deceive you. You decide whats good. You decide alone. But no one is alone. I wish. I know. Mother isn't here now Wrong things, right things Who knows what she'd say? Who can say what's true? Nothings quite so clear now. Do things, fight things, Feel you've lost your way? You decide, but You are not alone Believe me, No one is alone No one is alone. Believe me. Truly You move just a finger, Say the slightest word, Somethings bound to linger Be heard No one acts alone. Careful. No one is alone. People make mistakes. Fathers, Mothers, People make mistakes, Holding to their own, Thinking they're alone. Honor their mistakes Everybody makes Fight for their mistakes One another's terrible mistakes. Witches can be right, Giants can be good. You decide what's right you decide what's good Just remember: Just remember: Someone is on your side

Solitude Solidarity
A revision of the classic poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox
Laugh, and the world laughs with you; Weep, and you weep alone; it holds you close, For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth, But has trouble enough of its own. And it pities the sorrow it knows. Sing, and the hills will answer; Sigh, it is lost born on the air; The echoes bound to a joyful sound, But shrink from voicing care. And rise to proffer care.
Rejoice, and men will seek you; Grieve, and they turn and go; dry your tears; They want full measure of all your pleasure, But they do not need your woe. And the passion of all your fears. Be glad, and your friends are many; Be sad, and you lose them all,— and they heed your call,— There are none to decline your nectared wine, But alone you must drink life’s gall. Or their share of your sharpest gall.
Feast, and your halls are crowded; Fast, and the world goes stays by. Succeed and give, and it helps you live, But no man can help you die. Still it mourns you when you die. There is room in the halls of pleasure For a large and lordly train, But one by one we must all file on And hand in hand we must all file on Through the narrow aisles of pain tender aisles of pain.

One of my favorite moments in all musical theatre is in Into the Woods during "No One is Alone" where Little Red Riding Hood says, "I wish-" and Cinderella replies, "I know." It's just so beautiful and heartbreaking because Cinderella does know exactly how she feels, and instead of trying to make her feel better, she allows her to just express that sadness. Also, she doesn't try to stop Red from saying it, even though wishing is what got them into the whole mess in the first place. She knows exactly how it feels and is able to just sit with her in that moment. It's tragically beautiful and makes me want to cry a little every time I hear it.

tonight is hard. this month was hard. this year has been hard.
but no matter how hard it gets, there is always sunshine somewhere. there are always people who love and give back. there are always those small moments that give a breath of fresh air—a breeze, the call of a bird or laughter that catches your ear, a butterfly flitting passed, etc. whatever that small moment is to you, hang on to it when you need.
it’s okay to not be okay sometimes. it’s okay to lean on others. it’s okay to need a little help finding the sunshine.

i really neede david tennant and neil gaiman on this together with me
If Neil Gaiman and David Tennant are having Imposter Syndrome, you're good.
(Transcript Below)
Neil Gaiman: The first problem of any kind of even limited success, is the unshakable conviction that you are getting away with something, and that any moment now, they will discover you.
David Tennant: For me, that's what being an actor is about. Sort of going, this is all, it's all on one level, it's all just a bit silly. And I can't really believe I'm getting away with this. And at some point someone's gonna tap me on the sholder and go 'Come on, you've had your fun. Move on. There are some people who can actually do this. There are some proper actors in the world. Stop pretending, and move on. You're a little wee nae from Paisley. You don't really get to do this.
Neil Gaiman: In my case I was convinced there would a knock on the door, and a man with a clipboard – I don't know why he had a clipboard, but in my head he always had a clipboard – would be there and tell me it was all over, and they've caught up with me, and now I would have to go and get a real job. One that didn't consist of making things up and writing them down, and reading books I wanted to read. And then, I would go away quietly. And get the kind of job I would have to get up early in the morning, and wear a tie, and not make things up anymore.
#we are all the same#no one is alone#the world is a huge comedy theatre with people who don't know how things work running on vibes#and it just works out#that's why no one knows what's going on all the time#and we have all these theories and science and philosophy to try to explain things#but really it's just everyone winging it#we are not alone#imposter syndrome
