I’ve been on hiatus. It’s been four months since my last blog, so here’s my deepest thanks for sticking around. . As an internal processor AND perfectionist, it’s not easy for me to translate my inner state into words and images. That process is kind of like seeing a cloud in the sky, and then attempting to make a sculpture, even as it morphs and drifts away. Once in a while, I can get a sketch of a thought-cloud, but they evade capture. . There’s just far too much to process, and I can be a bit slow to gather my sources and thoughts. There are voices that are far more qualified to educate and organize (yes I know my experience is valuable, too!), and I am happy to amplify and highlight those when I can. . In addition, these last few months I’ve been engaged in a mental and physical battle with ED. A lot of things I care about (including @sunrequiem) have been put on hold because recovery requires all my energy. . Imma be patient with myself as I heal and get ready to create and give back to this world. . How Athletes should handle cravings, give into them! Yes, that's right when you crave something, eat it!! And then you can move on!! Craving ice cream and having fruit instead will not cut it! You will only want the ice cream even more. . Be aware of your cravings; don't ignore them. Of course, you should eat fruit and other foods, but if you are craving certain foods, you want to pay attention to this. Eating something else to push off a food craving, will likely cause you more frustration. Food should be enjoyed and not feared or stressed. However, I know that food fears are a reality for many people, and it used to be a reality for me. . Once you give in to food cravings regularly, they become less intense, and that food is no longer a big deal. It's true!! I know many of you don't believe me, but think about when you deny yourself something; then the urge gets even stronger. Think about the last time you had a food craving and did not satisfy that craving for days or even weeks, how did that go? . On a scale of 1 to 5 how much do you love OATMEAL bowls? 🥣 . Every now and again I go through a BIG oatmeal phase and it’s all I want for breakfast. I enjoy it as an oatmeal bake, overnight oats, or a slow bowl of steel cut oats with all the goods. Oats contain soluble fiber that helps lower cholesterol and fosters the growth of healthy gut bacteria, they can be a quick and easy meal prep breakfast (or a savory version for dinner!), and they provide excellent “staying power” keeping you full for hours. . While I could go on and on about the benefits of oatmeal, many people tell me they feel there are “rules” about this breakfast bowl. Many fear it’ll become too high in carbs if they have oats and fruit together. People are quick to say they know the packets of pre-flavored oatmeal are no good, but hesitantly ask me if they’re “allowed” to add some honey or maple syrup. We have made this nourishing food OVER-COMPLICATED, when it really doesn’t have to be. . What I usually say is, if adding some honey and fruit is going to make it more palatable, go for it- it’s better than skipping this nutritious breakfast option all together and opting for nothing. If you’re concerned about how your blood sugar will respond, I recommend serving smaller portion sizes of the oats and fruit and loading the bowl up with protein and fat from greek yogurt, nut butter, and chia seeds. And if you tell yourself that because you’re having carbs for breakfast means you can’t have any for the rest of the day, I say kick that rule to the curb because carbs are okay at any meal! .
