“I know that, but it was an accident.”

“You are literally wearing an entire fucking fireproof outfit.” Steve slams his hand on the wheel, a little more aggressively than he means to.

“Language Stevie.” You mumble, taking off the jacket part of your outfit.

“Can’t you take that off when we get to the damned hotel?”

“It’s like super hot.” You complain to Bucky, throwing the last of the articles of clothing on the floor before removing the long piece of ribbon from your ponytail that was holding your hair together, which you tie around your wrist. “Y’all are just jealous you don’t have fireproof gear.” You taunt, leaning forward as you rest your arms on the shoulders of their chairs.

“We ALL have fireproof suits. And we would’ve brought them if we knew you were going to start a fucking fire.” Bucky turns around, his face inches from yours.

“Oh come on. It was cool.”

“Yea, it was totally so cool when you zipped up your outfit before throwing the match on the ground and I barely had two seconds before the shit blew up to put my shield in front of me.” He turns the car, taking a right onto a one way street.

“Sorry, I just-”

“No.” Bucky cuts in, facing you again. His look is serious. You knew he didn’t like you disobeying what they tell you for missions this important. But this time they were both angry. Normally, it would just be Bucky, or just Steve. So you know you fucked up.

“You two bring up the bags, I’ll get the key.” Steve nods towards you and Bucky after putting the car in park. “And let's actually follow orders this time. Okay?” He asks, sarcastically.

You nod, getting out of the car with an annoyance in your step as you cover your body with crossed arms. The uniform you were wearing was more like lingerie. Normally it wouldn’t bother you around the two people you feel most comfortable with, but when they are mad, it only makes you feel uncomfortable in your own skin. So you follow behind Bucky, carrying your own bag of clothes while he carries his own and Steves, the elevator ride uncomfortably silent as Steve gets the key to the room. Leaving you alone with Bucky as you both stand at the door to the room. Not a single word to be spoken.

You look up at him, his eyes focused on the screen of his phone as his thumb scrolls along the device, little images moving through his blue eyes tells you he’s scrolling through someone's Instagram profile. You look down at his left hand, his metal thumb hooked into the pocket of his jeans as he stands there, staring at his phone, a pissed look still visible on his face.

Then you hear footsteps, causing both of you to turn your head to also pissed off Steve Rogers, the room key between his index and middle finger.

“A little quiet. Are you guys suddenly mortal enemies?” He jokes, scanning the key on the hotel door before holding the door open for you and Bucky.

“Why talk to her when she doesn’t even listen?” Bucky asks, rhetorically. Then he throws the bags of clothes down, crouching over to take out some clothes. “Who wants to shower first?”

“Doesn’t matter to me.”

“Let her shower first. She was wearing that thick suit. I'm sure enough she smells like shit.” Steve crouches next to Bucky, also grabbing his clothes.

You open the door to the bedroom, taking one step in before stopping and looking down at the two best friends. “Hey, who’s sleeping where?”

“There’s two beds. You get one bed, we share the other-”

“There’s only one bed.” You interrupt Steve, his eyebrows squinting in confusion. “There should be two, are you sure?”

“Well unless I’m blind or forgot how to count, yes, I’m sure.” He stands up with Bucky, both of them looking into the room. One king sized bed.

“Well shit. I’ll go down to the office.” Bucky tells you both, then leaves without another word.

“If they can’t get a two bedroom for us then you and Bucky take the bed. The couch will be too small for you both.” You offer.

“The bed will be uncomfortable for you.”

“I’ve slept on the floors.”

“Correction. You’ve tried to sleep on the floors.” He looks down at you, your arms crossing over your stomach in a sort of challenge. “Fine. We can take the bed if he can’t find another room.” He sighs, walking back over to his bags on the floor. “Go ahead and start your shower though.” He groans as he throws himself onto the couch and stretches as you head to the bathroom, setting the water warm before getting undressed and stepping into the shower. The water falling mutes the sound of Bucky coming back in. You couldn’t understand a word he said, but he sounded annoyed. So you assume there isn’t another room.

When you’re done, you step out. The smell of your lavender shampoo and bodywash filling the air as you wrap a towel around your hair and dry your body before dressing into your short Captain America pyjamas and your thin black top with a red star on the chest, not wanting to throw on a bra or panties, you step out and put the two back in your bag on the floor, missing the looks that Bucky and Steve give you, also missing the look and nod they give each other.

“Hey, Y/N.” You look up to Steve's voice. “I don’t want to report your actions.” He stands from the couch and walks over to you until you have to bend your neck to look up at him. “I don’t like you getting in trouble for disobeying simple orders. But you have to be punished in some way.”

“Please don’t report it…” You beg a little, Bucky moving up behind Steve as they stand shoulder to shoulder. “Another report and I’m back to being a desk agent.” You whine a little.

“Which would really suck, wouldn’t it?” Bucky's eyes stare straight into yours, some hidden darkness concealed behind his pupil, you nod urgently.

“Then how should you learn your lesson?” Steve takes another step closer, his hand reaching up to push some hair behind your ear. “You have to learn somehow.”

“You need to be punished, Y/N.” Bucky whispers harshly, his left hand resting on your waist suddenly as your hands move to your stomach, the entire interaction making you nervous as you start to pick at your skin.

“I feel like you’re both implying the same thing right now…” Your voice is quiet, any louder and it would crack. “But I uh… Want conformation on what exactly-”

“I think the three of us should all share the bed, what do you think?”

thinking about fear, had a previous post about dear that i made but it was more about my au and pre cyan arc

will mention some things from episode 11 and the ep 12 pv aswell

okay, first warning this is my understanding but fear seems to be part negativity it always shows up when an area or person has alot of people think negatively of an area/ fear whats gping on in the area and there seem to be 2 types of of fear

the fear from spotlight, doesnt seem dangerous to the user atleast not on a short notice and seems to mostly give superpowers that boost preexisting negativity but in a non danger way

and the fear that is natural like how we see with boa at the end of ep 11 and with the orphanage in cyans arc

that fear seems to be triggered by the people in the area feeling negatively and the people outside getting a negative few on it in turn

so its a chain reaction, meaning a single person posting something negative could turn into a catastrophe if it goes viral

now natural fear seems to be able to also split in two

the one where its the RE zombie style(seen with the monster in ep 11 and the zombie civilians in cyans arc) seems to mostly affect civillains

probably because of their lower trust value

and with heroes/ex heroes the effects become a bit diffrent

the dean turned into the tentacle monster, which seems to have been triggered by his higher trust value aka having pre existing powers might trigger transformations or trigger not getting the pubble on your body

with boa in the pv she doesnt seem to have been with fear long enough for her looks to change but she definetly got some kinda boost in her powers

another thing, spotlight fear keeps normal eyes, natural fear gives the black red eyes

now zero

zero is the most extreme case of hero fear

since he was seen as a god people probably started spiraling, from hes the god and savior to what if he decided to kill us

and since he definetly had so many fans it went really bad really fast, seeing wiht the extremely drastic changes on hsi appearance

In Kafka's PV three phrases flash on screen near the end: "macguffin," "non linear structure," and "oneiric structure"

Oneiric structure is the easiest to figure out. From wikipedia: "refers to the depiction of dream-like states or to the use of the metaphor of a dream or the dream-state in the analysis of a film." Most likely refers to Kafka's spirit whisper ability.

Non linear structure is harder to figure out. If we're looking at these phrases as descriptions of Kafka, it could refer to her ambiguous nature. We're learning information about her out of context, or we've missed crucial aspects of her life that would make her present behavior easier to understand.

Macguffin is similarly difficult to parse, but if I can throw my own interpretation into the ring: I think it's how Kafka views herself. For those who may not know, a macguffin is "is an object, device, or event that is necessary to the plot and the motivation of the characters, but insignificant, unimportant, or irrelevant in itself."

The overall film/theater imagery around Kafka implies she views the world through the eyes of a play. Even outside of Elio's "scripts," Kafka's inability to comprehend one of humanity's most basic emotions makes her feel like a prop going through the motions of being a human. So the "macguffin" in those scripts would be her, necessary to trigger the plot but ultimately unimportant when left on her own.

When I think about it nearly everyone getting a partner was the 02 epilogue final result, yes? And yet that same vision the 02 Digidestined squashed that vision. So, on one hand I get why they did it, but on the other I’m trying to determine if that’s what Hikari had a vision of happening was it just the execution by Homeostasis that forced them to pull the trigger?

The movie is setting things up it seems for these unresolved plot lines but giving us hints of what the set up is going to be."

The problem is that we absolutely do not know what they're planning to do with Digimon as a whole. Since Kizuna, they have said "This will be the final meeting", just to follow it up with a vague statement towards "We'll meet again", depending on how the cash cow was doing at the time, I presume. Plus, they keep mentioning how things may or may not change or stay the same, future-wise, epilogue-wise - ever since Tri attempted to give the Adventure cast a new spin despite not changing too much in order not to disrupt the status quo too much. They said they put new/more staff into the anime department, seeing how well Digimon is currently doing financially, which is why they put so much effort into the 25th anniversary.

However, it absolutely isn't clear how many cooks are involved in cooking the canonized OG Adventure verse at this point - and whether or not the PV will be 100% canon, whether Tri, Kizuna or The Beginning are 100% canon at this point. (I assume we might get a split timeline of the Kakudou-verse and the Non-Kakudou-verse with the PV, but it'll really depend on if the events of Tri onwards are being hinted at in there or not).

Sorry for the rambling, but for me, things are really up in the air as of right now. I think The Beginning implied that partnerships might keep forming, but without Digivices. Which... Once again, may not have been the smartest decision in terms of merch and story continuity (but then again, neither was not giving Kizuna a proper Happy End, so we can assume, Digimon Adventure in itself is NOT good at having satisfying endings).

We might have to wait until March - and even further than that to get a proper announcement what the next animated project will be like, who will work on it and what it will contain.

What it means to be "chosen" - burden, fate, acceptance

This is not going to be a full analysis on the whereabouts of why and how "The Chosen One" trope is being executed in the Digimon Adventure series, because frankly... The lines have pretty much been blurred throughout the different iterations. Even the question of why some children in particular were chosen has been answered differently depending on which source material and which person you'll ask - and thus, there are different interpretations out there. Whether it's because of their potential (in regards to certain attributes, the subject of friendship or in general) shall not be discussed in full, but let's say... The very first Chosen Ones were chosen out of necessity, even if chance may have been involved.

If you ask me personally, the main premise one can and should take away from all of it actually boils down to a cheesy quote from the dub version of the first Pokémon movie: "I see now that the circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant; it is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are."

Replace "birth" and "life" with "Chosen Child status" and it fits again - regardless of what characters you apply it to. The only difference here is - that they may not refer to it as a "gift". Because this is something they all handle differently, depending on what version you look at, once more. So I wanted to make a little, very inoffical ranking on how the status is being perceived by all of them. Keep in mind that, by the end of 02, you could say that ALL of them have accepted it as a part of their lives, some more willingly than others, but the general tone is the same:

"Being chosen is nothing special and yet we all understand that there is a necessity, that we have a duty to fulfill."

After characters like Sora or Yamato had already questioned being chosen in Adventure, Ken was the first character that challenged the idea of it being a "burden created by chance".

"It could have been anyone but me, so why was I chosen, why did I have to suffer and get punished?"

This theme is being explored in similar yet different ways through the protagonists of the later movies - Meiko (and Maki), Menoa and Rui all represent tragic figures in a somewhat twisted "game of chance", used by higher forces. We know that the number of Chosen Children doubled each year - whether due to Homeostasis meddling mingled with Rui's wish shall not be subject of this post, but overall, we can say: They all received the "gift" of partnerships. However, neither of them were meant to last, due to different circumstances. Which includes Ken as well - because once corrupted or unable to fulfill a certain "duty" any longer, all these partnerships were (sometimes temporarily, sometimes permanently) ripped apart.

Long story short, for the sake of the following ranking, I will include Tri onwards for completion sake - however, it's just a temporary state, because "Adventure Beyond" may fix some of these views.

Rejects it as a burden (temporarily): Sora

This one is, sadly, quite self-explanatory due to the current state of Sora being "out of the loop". She had been among those who initially (Adventure) fell into despair due to the burden of having to save the world - and while she temporarily accepted it (02), it all played into her trauma of not knowing who she was and how to define herself outside of "labels that were externally assigned to her". So yes, despite her clearly loving her partner... We shall wait and see how she will deal with this in the future.

Ambilvalent, had to get through several stages of contemplation, but overall knows it's part of who they are (still ongoing): Yamato & Taichi, Miyako & Iori

These two "groups" are here for different reasons. The entirety of the Adventure-verse spends a lot of time telling us how torn Taichi and Yamato are basically all the time - they're more than willing to save the world whenever it's required, but struggle with the "Chosen Child identity" and what it means for them as "normal people". Because as strongest fighters, they know they shoulder a lot of responsibility, for themselves, their friends and families, but also for the worlds out there. Fighting yet causing sacrifices when they themselves still have to deal with heavy childhood trauma not only causes them to clash, but also to (subconsciously) reject their duties, hence causing their partnerships to (temporarily) vanish. Which is very similar to the tragic figures talked above - which is also why they all suffer from depression, fear of abandonment and identity crises. They're perfectly aware of the duty and see it as a necessity they HAVE TOO choose for themselves in order to succeed. But the latter is a lesson they had to learn the hard way first - while also remembering how important their partners (and this kind of life) really are to them, because it's literally all there inside themselves. They just have to discover it again.

Miyako and Iori are a bit harder to decipher - they used to struggle strongly with the idea of having to make sacrifices due to their Chosen Child status and I would argue that this is still something that, if they think about it for too long, keeps them up at night. But I would still put them on the outer part of this scale - for the simple fact that they were able to integrate their partnerships into their daily lives. There may absolutely be times when they see it as a chore and annoying - but begrudgingly accept it due to the bond they share with their partners and friends.

Accepts it after coming to terms with it, transforms it positively: Hikari & Takeru, Jyou, Mimi & Ken

The viewer doesn't spend as much time with these two when it comes to how they define themselves. Hikari and Takeru, similarly to their brothers, can be assumed to be aware of their special status among the group. They're the enabling angels - and know that's why they could never quit. On the other hand, despite suffering from childhood and family-related trauma that causes them to fear darkness and separation, they seem to learn not to see it as a "burden" in itself. Unlike their siblings, they have an easier time integrating their partners into their daily lives - maybe because they hadn't been separated for as long, maybe it's because they perceive it differently due to their ages and being surrounded by people who also make it look easy. They are aware of the responsibility - and despite their strong opinions on injustice, they're still able to see the gift in it all.

Jyou, Mimi and Ken are purposefully separated from everyone, due to the fact that they were all at a point in their lives at least ONCE where they were about to quit it all for good - but eventually learned that it was something about themselves they couldn't change. Something they had to live with, if they wanted or not, even if they were ALL heavily affected by watching beloved people/mons die. Mimi loathed the idea of fighting and causing unnecessary death, Jyou repeatedly asked himself why he couldn't just live a normal life aside from outside expectations - but unlike Sora or Taichi, they actively embraced the idea that there were things only they were capable of that nobody else could. This seems to be in contrast to the idea that "being chosen is nothing special" - but these two were capable of making it work in a more casual, less spectacular way and, just like the likes of Miyako, Iori, Takeru and Hikari, were able to keep their partners as active parts of their private and/or career lives all around.

And so was Ken! Ken's journey is that of repentance, wanting to make up for what he did in the past, even if it meant sacrificing himself for that. He could easily have collapsed under that burden - if he hadn't had the right people to surround himself with, showing him that he was valuable despite his wrongdoings. And it feels like - Ken learned that lesson so thoroughly that, even though one can be sure that he still suffers from nightmares as an adult, he's also capable of helping others (just like Rui) to understand that message.

These three chose to embrace it eventually, even if there were temporary doubts.

Embraces it as part of their lives without question: Daisuke & Koushirou

I'm not saying that Daisuke WASN'T having temporary doubts of whether or not he was worthy enough to carry a digivice or even the goggles at first - but he also turned out to be the one who just "winged it" all eventually, as if it was the most normal thing in the world. For him, having a partner, being chosen, meant just that - it didn't make him any more or less special than any other person on the planet with aspirations, goals or all the various life paths. Sure, he may have been flabbergasted and in awe at first, but in the end, meeting V-mon was nothing more than getting another brother AND having the ability to be badass and doing the best he could while saving the world. Despite his mask of self-importance, who knows him also knows that he's down to earth like that and just accepts it all how it is as a side gig to getting his Ramen business going.

Koushirou may be a little bit less casual about it, but for him, being chosen isn't a burden or fate or any magically connected miracle - it is a part of his identity. Yes, he may have been just as irritated by File Island and being surrounded by weird monsters as everyone else was - but he was basically the first one who just questioned it all because he simply wanted to figure it out, NOT because it was a chore. Yes, he may look exasperated at times after having helped to support saving the world(s) countless times, but for him, that is his life. He has committed himself to researching the whereabouts of the Digital World, his tech company is primarily aimed at creating gadgets to support his friends and that serve the initial cause - and his partner is basically with him 24/7 anyway.

Winter 2021 Anime Worth Watching!

Since 2020 basically sacrificed itself to give us the most stacked anime season of all time, I’m currently buried under the weight of almost 20 shows airing per week. So for anyone who’s looking for some anime to watch this winter, here’s some first impressions! I’m speed running my list this time by only talking about the new shows...because otherwise this would be my great American novel. 

If anyone’s interested, I have master lists for both 2020 anime and 2019 anime, because there’s no shortage of fun things to find. 

New Shows!

And before anyone asks, So I’m A Spider, So What? isn’t on here, because CG spiders freak me out.

Cells At Work Code Black: This...less comedic spin off of Cells At Work (made by a different studio) takes the wholesome concept of Osmosis Jones meets cute anime girls and turns it on its head. In this much more depressing version, we follow a rookie red blood cell who works in the body of an overly stressed, alcoholic smoker who puts every strain on the body imaginable. I love Red Blood Cell AA2153 and his co-workers, but man am I glad we get the regular Cells At Work airing this season too, because I need something fun and uplifting after seeing my sweet son go through hell every episode. 

*Heaven’s Design Team: Have you ever wondered how God came up with some of the weird ass animals that live on this planet? Like, what’s the deal with giraffes? And why can’t we have dragons and flying horses? Well this is a comedy about the engineers and designers in heaven creating the new animals that are going to inhabit the Earth. That’s it, that’s the show. It’s kind of in the same vein as Cells At Work, having comedy blend with a surprising amount of educational information. If you want something light and funny, this is the show for you (though I don’t think it needs to have full length episodes). I’m just hoping there’s an episode about how the hell the platypus was created. Also it’s the only new one available on Crunchyroll.

Horimiya: A romantic comedy about a girl named Hori who fits the image of a perfect queen bee and a quiet bespectacled boy named Miyamura who never makes an impression at school. When the two meet by chance outside of the classroom, we see that Hori is practically raising a younger brother by herself, and Miyamura is actually a sweet guy who happens to be covered in tattoos and piercings. This show is an exercise in breaking down the images people have of others in their minds, and it’s a concept that really hits home in a fun and meaningful way. Honestly, this has become one of my immediate favorites. The characters have great chemistry, and I can’t wait to see more of them!

Monster Incidents (Kemono Jihen): When big shot Tokyo detective Inugami is called to a rural town to investigate a series of strange animal deaths, he finds a mysterious boy with the nickname Dorotabo who has been shunned by the other children in town. As the detective gets closer to Dorotabo, he discovers that there may be more...inhuman secrets to the boy than he realizes...and Dorotabo discovers that Inugami has some secrets of his own. This is a hard show to sell without spoiling the first episode, but it had twists and turns that kept me engaged from start to finish. I’m really interested to see where the plot goes, because I thought this was going to be something totally different just from the PV and series summary. If it plays its cards right, this could be a great paranormal detective show!

Wonder Egg Priority: A psychological drama about a girl named Ai who starts having dreams about a mysterious egg that promises to give her what she wants most in the world...a true friend. Before long, she begins to see how the dream world and reality are tied together, and trippy antics ensue. It’s hard to say more without spoiling anything, but I had to go back and add this one in because I made the mistake of thinking it was an OVA when it’s actually a full series. And what a series it’s starting out to be. This anime has all the psychological discomfort of a Satoshi Kon product with the beauty and style of something from Kyoani (even though it’s made by Clover Works). It’s really one of those anime you just have to see to understand.

Sk8-∞ (Skate the infinity): An original skateboarding anime from Bones, featuring a typical sports anime protagonist who takes a new transfer student who has never skateboarded in his life under his wing. Together they compete in dangerous races and take the skating community by storm. The character designs rival Appare Ranman’s in outlandish creativity, and I can smell the main characters’ ship dynamic a mile away (considering they’re exactly the same as the protagonists from Robihachi). If you’re looking for some wild and crazy fun with top notch skateboarding animation, don’t skip this!

2.43: Seiin Koukou Danshi Volley-bu (Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Club): Yes, it’s another volleyball anime. And no, it’s not just a clone of Haikyu. This story follows Yuni Kuroba, a physically built but emotionally weak teenager who finds out his childhood friend Hajime is moving back to their hometown for high school. Yuni discovers Hajime has become an exceptional volleyball player and they join their school’s volleyball club hoping to turn the unknown team into a rising star. If anything, this anime is much more like Stars Align or Free, where the sport is a backdrop for letting the characters explore their personal problems. Or at least it seems that way after the first episode. I went into this show ready to throw it in the trash because how could anything compete against my beloved Haikyu, but I found myself really enjoying the dynamics of the main duo and I’m curious to see what the rest of the team is like.

And speaking of sports anime rip-offs…..I can’t believe I’m including this but…

Skate Leading Stars: The show where the animators clearly wanted to design another throw away idol anime but saw how popular Yuri On Ice was so they decided to make whatever the hell this show is instead. It revolves around a fictional team sport called skate leading, and we follow the world’s most insufferable main character, a former figure skater named Kensei who wants to return to the ice and join his school’s skate leading team after he finds out his childhood rival is going to compete in the sport. Look, this show is just trashy enough to get a certain type of audience hooked, and it mainly has to do with the best boy of the winter season, Hayato Sasugai, the aspiring team “coach” who pulled most of us into watching this show with his punk appearance, snide comments and smug personality. He’s basically the lovechild of Izaya Orihara and Shizuo Heiwajima in a high school sports anime setting. The show treats itself with the perfect amount of sincerity to get away with being absolutely ridiculous most of the time without making you feel like you’re watching it from a dumpster...like Try Knights. You will know after one episode whether this show is for you. All I can say is, Hayato is worth the watch, and I haven’t seen any 3D animation used for the skating scenes (yet) so that’s a win for me. 

Honorable mention:

Jobless Reincarnation ( Mushoku Tensei): Yet another isekai where the main character is hit by a car (big surprise) and gets reincarnated into a fantasy world...but he happens to remember his previous life and narrates himself growing up as a jaded adult. I’m only including this because it looked amazing animation wise, and I love the opening where getting hit by a car and dying is actually traumatic. And I love the protagonist’s parents (who are retired adventurers who just want to bang all the time). But honestly...the main character is the fucking worst, and I don’t know if I want to keep watching it because of how creepy and weird he is. Like...he’s the hit on your fantasy mom as a baby kind of creepy and weird. But for anyone who wants a cool looking isekai that had an amazing PV, it’s worth checking out.

The new key visual looks awesome!! Finally getting more Final Season artwork is so satisfying and this is pretty great! The marley arc is probably my favorite in the manga and getting even more promotional art for it is really cool : D Since we’re still 3 months from the airdate I hope we’ll get another Warrior-centric one, with the new and old crew, but rn, especially with manga context, I love this, and I need to ramble about it.

First of all, Mikasa!!! Mikasa front and center!!! lets gooooo ahh I’m so happy about this! I don’t think she’s ever been this focused on in any of the promotional key visuals and it’s been about time! She looks gorgeous and absolutely ruthless, I’m here for it. It’s also relieving to see that the scarf did in fact stay red which wasn’t totally certain in the pv. I also think it’s interesting that both that shot of her in the pv, as well as her in this visual both kind of highlight her more badass/ruthless side--I’m all here for it cause like, look at her!!! But she also spends a good amount of time in marley being sad and distressed which I hope they’ll do justice to. Either way, she looks amazing and I can’t wait to see her finally in motion.

Levi I’m a little less sure on--his face looks a little odd? Maybe it’s the nose? I’m not really sure. To be fair, his design has probably been the least consistent across the whole anime, and he’s certainly looked worse! But yeah, I’m not 100% sold on his look yet. Also just as it was in the first key visual, his cape is green? Even tho its specifically dyed black in the manga? I’m sure why and I’m kinda sad about that cause I would’ve loved to see that all black look on him, it’s an odd change.

Connie, Jean and Sasha all look good to me (I’m glad we’re getting Sasha artwork before, you know), but Armin gets pushed to the side pretty hard kind of? Given his rather small role this arc, I think it makes sense, tho hopefully key visuals for the later arcs will improve on that. Also sidenote, his pose reminded me a lot of Jean in the S2 Group visual lol

Hange being a bit smaller, but also being centered and depicted as the leader fits well here, especially with her being closest to the airship since she never leaves it. It reminds me of Erwin in a few other posters, kind of continuing the commander position, in a way

One thing I also dig about this visual is the look of certain textures, specifically metallic objects, like the blades, thunderspears, even the airship. 

It has this like..shiny glow? I can’t really express what I mean with it, but all these objects feel very tangible, very three dimensional, which is cool!

Unfortunately I don’t really feel the same way about all the textures present in this visual. See, non metallic textures, like clothing, skin, and the characters outlines in general have this kind of rough, or gritty look to them. The lines are clear and straight like they used to be, but it’s a little messier? The first key visual did the same thing, let me show you.

Compare it to something like this, where (even tho the resolution is a bit botched on tumblr) everything looks much smoother, cleaner, softer. Maybe it’s because I’m so used to Kyoji Asano’s style of drawing these key visuals for 6 years, but I think I prefer it over the approach of Tomohiro Kishi’s style. But this only is the start of seeing new artwork, maybe I’ll get used to it. It’s a bit odd as Wit’s animation style in the show was known for generally having thicker lines, and even tho they cut back on that in later seasons, it’s still not as thin as in the final season pv, yet its artwork has lines that feel thicker. It’s an odd back and forth.

My honestly biggest gripe with this key visual is it’s actual get up--having characters kind of float around in nothingness isn’t something I really love. I much prefer most of the older group visuals (like the recap movies or the S2 one) where characters at least seemed to stand on surfaces and physical space, and those who weren’t were either shown to be mid air, or obscured enough so you couldn’t see them stand in nothing. As a result, this reminds me a lot of the 3rd S3 visual

I wasn’t a huge fan of that one as it just reused and rearranged the Vol13 poses without really any effort. Like it just plants everyone there and I don’t think the result is really all that impressive. This one does this a lot better, as it has a bit more synergy going for it, there’s a bit of motion (the soldiers flying next to the ship looking like speedlines is a cool touch), and it just looks more interesting in my opinion. I also think it does the manga-ripoff better, as it clearly is meant to resemble vol 26 with the airship and the squad, but it doesnt just reuse the poses--they’re new here, and the overall positioning of everyone reminds me more of the Vol 25 alt cover, or the new 32 one. It feels true to the spirit of the manga without outright copying! I still don’t like the mid air floating, but other than that it’s a solid grouping!

One additional neat thing is that the new gear is drawn with so much detail! Just as in the PV. Which is awesome! Sometimes its a bit though to get a good look at all the specifics in the manga, but here it’s just---exciting. I never even realized that Mikasa has to swap to an entirely different set of 3DMG handle/trigger/grapple that’s attached to her gear as well--everyone else has only one set for either the gun+thunderspear combo or the swords, but Mikasa has both sets on her since she does switch to swords on 103. And its just fucking crazy just how much gear this girl has on her lmao (did you know a single thunder spear weighs 5kg? thats 20 on each hand! plus all the heavy gear that comes with it! she is too strong lmao)

Ultimately, I like this visual a lot. It’s not perfect and some things are gonna take a while to get used to, but overall, I’m so excited to see everyone’s different looks highlighted as the season goes on. And getting so much Marley arc promo atm is very much appreciated! Hopefully we get another one focused on the warriors soon, and, man, even tho it’s a spoiler, I would kill for one visual dedicated to Marley Eren specifically...like...please.

BNA: Brand New Animal Thoughts, Speculation

With the new info revealed in the recent Otomedia interview with writer Kazuki Nakashima, I have some new personal thoughts and speculation regarding BNA: Brand New Animal, Studio Trigger’s upcoming anime series releasing in April of next year.

First of all, I think what I appreciated most about the whole interview is Nakashima and Yoh Yoshinari's dedication to writing women respectfully. For some reason, more than anything else, I was reminded of Kingdom Hearts discussions; even as someone not very involved in that series anymore, I've still seen, time and time again, criticism about how the writers of the franchise are old men who don't know how to write young women. 

Regardless of if you agree or disagree with this complaint, I think it's very refreshing to see Nakashima admit outright that he and the director of Brand New Animal are indeed adult men and do indeed find a character like Shirou more relatable to their experiences, but they still want to do Michiru justice. I love that Kimiko Ueno and Nanami Higuchi are writing for the series as well, and I love that producer Naoko Tsutsumi is providing input into the characterizations of women and the relationships between women. 

Nakashima and Yoshinari really want to get this right. I was already excited for BNA, and the commitment to writing women well ups my excitement.

In terms of speculation, I have to admit that I wasn't expecting the animal-humans to be able to switch between a human form and an animal form. I'm now thinking that Shirou somehow gets stuck in his human form just as Michiru is stuck in her beast form. From what we know about him (a human-hating wolf-person), I can’t see any other reason why he’d be pictured in his human form in most of the current promotional artwork for the series.

Nakashima citing Osamu Tezuka's Vampire manga as an inspiration is interesting, too. I wouldn't be surprised if the concept of a revolution where animal-humans "overthrow human society and let men live as beasts again" shows up in BNA in some sense. You can read some more about Vampire here; it really gives me a lot of food for thought regarding possibilities for BNA.

(Also, Vampire is like, Animorphs before Animorphs, and I am very fascinated by that.)

The interview also made me feel like my earlier speculation of Nazuna being something of a villain is more plausible. Nazuna showing up in a flashback and then being important in the latter half of the show? I dunno... something about it just seems kinda nefarious....

But again, I kinda hope I'm wrong! 

Alan, meanwhile, sounds as nefarious as ever. But it's curious that he doesn't show up 'til episode 3. I'm also wondering about the mention of the mayor of Anima City. Apparently the mayor's relationship with Shirou is crucial. But we don't have any art of this mayor yet, and we do have art of Alan? 

Hmmm....

I guess I'll end this here. tl;dr, I'm really excited for BNA and am dying for a PV. The project sounds super promising and deals so heavily with my personal favorite thing, human/non-human relationships. It's definitely the anime I'm most looking forward to next year.

synopsis: The protagonist, Mebuki Meme, had a peaceful everyday life. A dear friend, and a dear brother, she held them closely. However, that mundane peacefulness came to an abrupt end. Because of the "murder case" which revolving around her. "The One Eyed Ripper." Remembering that name, Rumors created by someone had created a murderer. Those peaceful everyday's have ended. Now begins the story of a person killing another. For love, for desire, for the sake of finding the right answer.Well then, who's the culprit?

the series “one eyed ripper” is currently a song based series, however, two pixiv mangas have been uploaded revolving around the characters, and there is a game in production.

Height: 156cm (5′1″) Birthday: 6/17 (June 17th) A second year in high school.

She lives together with her young stepbrother, Akihiro. She has a bright personality, but she’s not quite capable of thinking too deeply on things. She possesses a “let’s forget about bad things!” mindset.  However, she is burdened by concerns towards her brothers distrust in humans, as well as his sister complex (an extreme attachment to his sister, aka her), as she has a strong caring side to her. As a result, she worsens his sister complex without realizing it. She constantly pokes fun at Haruhiko’s idiocy, but she herself isn’t much better.

With the One Eyed Ripper murder case, she learns the truth about human nature, and falls into despair.

Tabako Haruhiko

Height: 182cm (5′10″) [if the img size difference doesnt show how big this boy is......] Birthday: 3/18 (March 18th) A second year in high school, however, he’s assumed to be older than Meme as he’s had to repeat year(s) (?)

A young man with a green muffler and a very distinct height. He’s in the same class as Meme, and has been friends with her since the start of high school. He looks like a disruptive delinquent, but that’s not really the case. He doesn’t skip class, but his test scores and grades aren’t the best. While he’s not in any clubs, he possess great reflexes. He has a strange sense of justice, and is the type of person to consider his friends. He’s worried about the hardships of his friend since middle school, Chifuyu. He also sympathizes with the sense of responsibility towards Meme’s younger brother. His hobby is teasing other people. It’s inevitable that he has fun teasing Meme.

In Meme’s words, “He’s a big mischevious kid.” In Chifuyu’s words, “He’s a rare chattering moron.” Well, it’s scary to make light of a moron.

Mebuki Akihiro

Height: 152cm (4′10″) Birthday: 9/9 (September 9th) A first year in high school.

A boy with distinctive freckles and heterochromia. He’s Meme’s younger brother, and possesses an extreme sister complex. As you’d expect from his short and slim appearance, he lacks physical strength. It looks like he wasn’t the type to play outside when he was younger, and he’s bad at working out.   He has extreme distrust towards anyone who isn’t Meme. Especially towards Haruhiko, who he doesn’t hide his disgust for. It doesn’t look like he has anyone he’d call a friend, nor does he want one. After becoming Meme’s stepbrother, they had first met during middle school. Essentially, even though they’ve been family for a short time, from the very beginning, he’s never felt any distrust towards Meme. Rather, it seems he already trusted her. Even though Meme herself thinks it’s strange, he won’t explain his reasons.

To no surprise, he thinks “in this world, I don’t need anything besides big sis.”

Minowa Chifuyu

Height: 162cm (5′3) Birthday: 11/18 (November 18th) A second year in high school.

Even though he wears an eye patch over his left eye, he’s a pretty average looking boy. He’s in the same class as Meme, and he, Meme, and Haruhiko are often with each other. He has excellent grades, is the vice president of the student counsel, and is an outgoing person. Furthermore, he’s the head of his household. He’s the legitimate heir of the Minowa family, which has lived in his town for a very long time. At school, however, the formalities that come with it are almost unnoticeable. In front of Meme and Haruhiko, he’s bright, smart, and sarcastic, and he enjoys teasing the both of them and riling them up. It’s said there’s not a single day where either of them could win against his teasing. His philosophical views he’s acquired from wherever often causes Meme to think, “Chifuyu’s pretty mature, huh?” 

He has a soft expression that’s rarely seen towards others, but it can be seen when he’s with Haruhiko and Meme. From the bottom of my heart, I treasure those two. What’s tormenting me so much, is my own intelligence. Surely you can understand.

didnt really attend the live it was just a delayed live viewing at a local cinema~

this is just based off my memory lol idk how accurate my memory is...but i trust it to a certain extent....

hnnnnn there was many izumi bros moments i kind of dieded bc wing and massu...cute...

also trigger.......kept giving fanservice im pretty sure the entire cinema hall died a million times over. there was a funny story that satou takuya told, about him posing like a “beast” on the first day that his pants ripped and on the morning of the second day, there was about 20 staff-san who were sewing his pants LOL.

SOOOOO FIRST OFF LET ME START WITH DANCING BEAT. ohoho KENN DANCING AND TAMASOU HIGHFIVE U HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH THE CINEMA HALL DIED

ame and dear butterfly!! ame was like really good yo kenn and abe-san were really cool for ame, and for dear butterfly, the graphics were really cool!! like abe-san raised his hand and a butterfly on the screen “coincidentally” landed on his palm and he kind of “let the butterfly free” if u get what i mean orz. also!! mezzo mezzo amazing!! and mezzolife dome!! 

i cant remember if it was during this time when they had mc but they basically decided to show off their outfits by turning in a circle and they decided to go from riku back since they did iori first on the first day lol. massu was not very happy (jokingly). egu (nagi) did a weird turn. egu’s well, weird. abe-san (sougo) was very elegant orz. kenn did his choreography for dancing beat! wing (mitsu) wanted to look cool since he got called cute on day 1 but he failed lol in the end everyone went “kawaii!!!!!!” HAHAHA. shirai yuusuke tried to do a cool turn, took off his glasses and put them back on without facing the crowd and everyone else was like “omg did u just put ur glasses back w/o facing the crowd wyd...” massu did a cool ish turn, but everyone was kind of unimpressed lol.

another mc moment but i dont remember when was it, but onoken was like, for dancing beat’s choreo there was a part where they were supposed to have their ring finger down but he just couldnt do it lol. but he managed to do it during the song itself and he was really happy about it! what a cutie....

next is tachi and soichiro hoshi orz these 2... the choreography was really cool aaaa and they kept on hyping up the crowd non stop through their songs and when theyre just mc-ing. 

then fure fure seishun sanka aaaaa bc it was a day b4 the twins’ birthday, massu (iori) asked the audience to sing a birthday song for them aa so nice ;; and the twins had to make fun of him after they sang the song ahhahaha they’re so cute ;; their performance was really good tho aa sasuga ainana and trigger’s centre and iori....

and danshi tarumono matsuri... pythag trio + gaku were so hyped omg everyone was so hyped 

next was love and game, and mezzo’ + ryuu did a really sexy dance which had the cinema dying another million times over.....i mean it....everyone was really hyped about it though, shouting “love game!” together with them!

then they showed some memorable lines from the anime and ~cue the angst and potential spoiler~ riku having to be replaced temporarily as centre by iori bc of his asthma.........cries we all died

and they showed restart pointer after that!!!!! THEY FOLLOWED THE BEGINNING OF THE PV, SO THERE WAS /THAT/ IORIKU MOMENT YES

then sakura message!!!! abe-san was playing the piano and singing orz what a talented man for the second half of the song the other 6 of them were sitting along the steps and they sang it really beautifully orz

thEN RE:VALE, DECIDES TO MAKE THEIR APPEARANCE AGAIN, IN KING THRONES, AND THE ENTIRE CINEMA HALL DIED AGAIN. istg re:vale please stop killing your fans orz but they looked really majestic and soichiro hoshi made a comment that the costume looked normal on tachibana since it fit him well and tachibana joked that he wears something similar to their costume on a daily basis to work LOL

next was memories melodies, nanatsuiro realise and party time together ahahha the crowd was really engaged during these 3 songs!!! esp nanatsuiro realise~

welps then was wish voyage, which i missed a part of bc i went off for a bit, but there was a really big airplane balloon!! and it “flew off” halfway into their performance aw. i7 even commented that the airplane was “freely roaming” lol. this was the supposed end to the live!

then encore! started off with thank you for your everything, the 7 members were all so hyped aaa they were running around the stage and hyping everyone up again!!!! and they still sang so well orz these people with such amazing voice control....kenn didnt really care though lol he just shouted his lyrics HAHAHA

natsu shiyouze! lol they grabbed water guns and started spraying water at the audience which was a reason why some of them forgot to sing their parts LOL. re:vale was called out in the second half of the song!

hmm more mc, people were crying because this segment was touching and them seiyuus really know how to make a speech....most memorable for me was when egu borrowed nagi’s words and asked the crowd “are you happy?” im so weak for him...and wing cried omg i cri too.... (announcement was i7 compilation album, re:vale’s 1st album and anime second season lol)

last!!! was welcome future world, and they asked the audience to sing together with them in their last song and everyone was so happy and hyped singing along with them orz how not to sing with them when they look so happy....

then when they finished all their songs, they went around saying thank you to the entire venue, bowing and waving and being so happy and grateful to everyone when everyone was instead grateful to them for holding such a great live.....

at the end, they stood on the main stage, held hands and without their mics, said their final “arigatou gozaimasu!” and it signaled the end as the curtain(?) closed on them as they kept bending down to wave goodbye to the audience lol.

Broad Spectrum Resistance: An Important Guarantee of Grain Yield-Juniper Publishers

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that loss of grain caused by crop diseases amounts to 10% every year. However, the continuous growth of world population will result into food crisis in 2050 [1]. To guarantee food security, breeding broad spectrum resistant (BSR) varieties is the most effective way to defend against fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance BSR of crop. Developing the BSR genes is the basis of breeding BSR varieties.

The plant innate immune system has two layers, pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs)-triggered immunity (PTI) and effector-triggered immunity (ETI) [2]. Factors in PTI mainly include PAMPs and their receptors, while factors in ETI mainly include effectors and nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat receptors (NLRs) [3]. However, lots of factors, such as some transcription factors and non-coding RNAs, are not clearly divided into the two layers [4, 5]. Previous studies often indicated that there is clear border between PTI and ETI, and PTI usually confer durable and broad-spectrum resistance (BSR), whereas ETI confer strong but race specific resistance (RSR). However, recent studies showed that the signaling crosstalk between PTI and ETI is present, and some NLRs in ETI can also trigger BSR [6]. It shows the difficulty and complexity of studying plant immunity, especially BSR, but it also provides us with opportunities to recognize BSR.

The resistance conferred by RSR genes often breaks down within 3-5 years due to the high variability and fast evolving populations of the fungus [7]. It further highlights the importance of developing BSR genes. Currently, some BSR genes are developed from crops, such as Xa21, Pi-d2 and Ptr in rice [6, 8], Yr36, Pm21 and Fhb7 in wheat [9-11], Rp1-D, Rxo1, ZmFBL41Chang7-2 in maize [12-14]. Additionally, some susceptibility genes in plant can confer BSR when losing their functions [6, 15]. However, application of BSR genes in breeding crop is inadequate because of an acute shortage of developing BSR genes and elucidating their resistant mechanisms.

Rice blast and bacterial blight of rice are devastating diseases of rice. Li et al. has reported recent advances in BSR to the rice blast disease, which included the identified BSR genes and their mechanisms [6]. Among the BSR genes conferring resistance to Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), Xa21 is the first cloned and the most important BSR genes. It encodes a transmembrane receptor-like kinase, which can recognize RaXX of Xoo to confer BSR resistance [16]. In wheat, four genes including Lr34/Yr18/Pm38/Sr57, Lr27/Yr30/Sr2, Lr46/Yr29/Pm39/Sr58 and Lr67/Yr46/Pm46/Sr55 confer resistance to wheat rust and powdery mildew [17]. In maize, ZmCCoAOMT2 encoding a caffeoyl-CoA O-methyltransferase confers quantitative resistance to three important foliar maize diseases, such as southern leaf blight, gray leaf spot and northern leaf blight [18]. Among these BSR genes, just several genes are applied in breeding crop, such as rice pi21 [19] and Pigm [20], barley Mlo [21]. Wheat Fhb7 and rice bsr-d1 have also great potential of application in breeding because Fhb7 and bsr-d1 confer broad resistance to Fusarium and Magnaporthe oryzae species, respectively, without yield penalty [4, 11].

Biological technologies have advanced at a breathless pace, which provide great opportunities for researchers to study resistance mechanisms, such as reconstitution and structure of the Resistosome using the cryoelectron microscopy [22], elucidating resistant mechanism of tomato using multi-omic [23], editing genes using TALEN or CRISPR/CAS9 technology [24]. Prospects for the development of plant immunity have improved markedly.

ious studies have established a framework for the plant BSR system. However, to ensure grain yield and food security, some important studies are still needed to keep going forward.

1. Screening BSR materials that provide new BSR genes.

2. Using computational biology to develop the BSR genes.

3. Identifying elite BSR genes without negative effects for plant growth and development.

4. Developing and promoting new technologies to refine the results.

5. Keeping crop yield and quality while enhancing disease resistance.
