#nonbinary Snape

I do not really care for HP movies in general and for movie Snape in particular, but one of the things I really dislike about it is Snape's clothes, because it influences the fandom's overall vision, and I do not picture Sev in those at all. Yes, they've made everyone more muggle looking and didn't go into wizarding fashion, I get it. But book Severus so doesn't vibe with trousers, my goddd. Like he would wear them in Cokeworth as a kid, obviously, and as an adult whenever he interacted with Muggle world, but during canon, he totally wears something flowy and dress-like. Both because it's traditional wizarding fashion and because Severus Snape is comforted by more feminine things. And we see that adult Snape (in the first book) does not wear trousers under his robes – which is logical, the robes are basically a dress, therefore they make an already complete look that doesn't require anything underneath. He also prefers a nightshirt (which is low-key a dress too) in private, doesn't he? He may wear trousers when he feels especially unsafe, or shorts at that matter, since we know he has related traumatic experiences – but maybe he deals with them in other ways, and his clothes stays the way he likes/finds more comfortable.

In my post-war Snape delusion AU, where Severus lives his best quiet life in a remote cottage, he mostly wears comfy maxi skirts or robes/dresses😌

The chill of the stone floor seeped through the thin soles of his her their slippers, a stark contrast to the clammy sweat prickling their her his skin beneath the heavy wool. They She He stared at his their her reflection, a stranger staring back from the ornate mirror.

The boy’s girl's student's uniform felt heavy, a suffocating weight on his their her shoulders. The scratchy fabric chafed at her their his neck, a constant, irritating reminder of the costume she he they was were trying to wear.

Behind him their her, a chaotic jumble of fabrics lay strewn across the floor. Silky robes in shades of emerald and sapphire mingled with rougher tweeds and plain cottons. A discarded corset lay half-hidden beneath a pile of trousers, its delicate lace a stark contrast to the masculine lines of the discarded jackets.

Each garment represented a different facet of themself herself himself, a different path she’d he'd they'd tried to walk, and each had ultimately failed to fit.

She They He ran a hand through his hair, the dark strands falling across their his her forehead. She usually liked how they framed her face, but now they felt like a disguise, another layer between himself and… themself himself herself.

He She They tugged at the collar of the uniform, the rough wool scratching at their throat. It was supposed to feel strong, powerful. But all it felt was wrong.

He They She closed her eyes, trying to conjure the feeling she they he was supposed to get from wearing these clothes. He thought of the other boys in his house, their easy confidence, their casual camaraderie.

They He She tried to mimic their swagger, their careless air. But it felt forced, a clumsy imitation. He She They was were playing a part, a character in a play they didn’t understand.

He opened his eyes again, his gaze drawn to the reflection in the mirror. They He She saw the sharp angles of his jaw, the slight curve of his her their nose, the intense black of her eyes. Features that could be considered both masculine and feminine, a confusing blend that mirrored the turmoil within him her them.

They saw the faint shadow of what could be, what should be, but it was obscured, hidden beneath layers of confusion and self-doubt.

She glanced down at the uniform, the rough fabric bunching uncomfortably at her chest. She He They could almost feel the phantom weight of breasts beneath the thick wool, a ghost of a shape that both was and wasn't him. The sensation sent a shiver down her their his spine.

He reached out, his fingers brushing against the cool surface of the mirror. He traced the outline of his reflection, his touch hesitant, almost reverent.

Who was this person staring back at him them? Were they the boy in the scratchy uniform?

Or the girl in the silken robes?

Or something else entirely, something in between, something beyond the labels and expectations?

They didn't have the answers. All they had was the confusing tangle of their feelings, the scratchy wool against their skin, and the silent question echoing in the depths of the mirror:

Who are you, Severus Tobias Snape Eileen Prince Sev?
