The End of the World or the End of Capitalism?: Colletion of Notes.
>"Capitalist realism as I understand it cannot be confined to art or to the quasi-propagandistic way in which advertising functions. It is more like a pervasive atmosphere, conditioning not only the production of culture but also the regulation of work and education, and acting as a kind of invisible barrier constraining thought and action". -Mark Fisher, Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative? >[Capital] has drowned the most heavenly ecstasies of religious fervor, of chivalrous enthusiasm, of philistine sentimentalism, in the icy water of egotistical calculation. It has resolved personal worth into exchange value, and in place of the numberless indefeasible chartered freedoms, has set up that single, unconscionable freedom Free Trade. In one word, for exploitation, veiled by religious and political illusions, it has substituted naked, shameless, direct, brutal exploitation -Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei.
>"In his Prison Notebooks, Gramsci said that in periods of crisis the old is dying and the new is not yet born. While Gramsci drew attention to the morbid symptoms of such a situation (in 1930) our crisis is different, and I want to draw attention to more hopeful symptoms (waiting to be born) of our present crisis of capitalist hegemony. The viability of initiatives trying to avoid competition with the market and escape from the hierarchic state rests on many untested assumptions. The first assumption is that those who do essential day-to-day tasks would continue to do their jobs in a PCC in preference to large corporations and their local affiliates: a multitude of people who now work in private or public sectors, directly or indirectly, establishing PCCs in their local communities producing food, organizing transport, setting up places of learning and transmission of skills, providing healthcare, running power systems, and so on. PCCs already do this all over the world on a small scale but such initiatives struggle within capitalist markets. Community-Supported Agriculture schemes in various parts of the world represent a first step on a long and difficult road to self-sufficiency in this sphere". - Leslie Sklair, The End of the World or the End of Capitalism? >"In 1869, New York neurologist George Beard used the term "neurasthenia" to describe a very broad condition caused by the exhaustion of the nervous system, which was thought to be particularly found in "civilized, intellectual communities." In 1998, Swedish psychiatrists Marie Åsberg and Åke Nygren investigated a surge of depression health insurance claims in Sweden. They found that the symptoms of many cases did not match the typical presentation of depression. Complaints like fatigue and decreased cognitive ability dominated, and many believed their working conditions to be the cause" >"The whole life of those societies in which modern conditions of production prevail presents itself as an immense accumulation of spectacles. All that once was directly lived has become mere representation". -Guy Debord, The Society of the Spectacle. >"Architecture is the simplest means of articulating time and space, of modulating reality, of engendering dreams. It is a matter not only of plastic articulation and modulation expressing an ephemeral beauty, but of a modulation producing influences in accordance with the eternal spectrum of human desires and the progress in realizing them. The architecture of tomorrow will be a means of modifying present conceptions of time and space. It will be a means of knowledge and a means of action." -Ivan Chtcheglov, Formulary for a New Urbanism
>"To you, this gathering is just one more boring event. The Situationist International, however, considers that while this assemblage of so many art critics as an attraction of the Brussels Fair is laughable, it is also significant.
Inasmuch as modern cultural thought has proved itself completely stagnant for over twenty-five years, and inasmuch as a whole era that has understood nothing and changed nothing is now becoming aware of its failure, its spokesmen are striving to transform their activities into institutions. They thus solicit official recognition from the completely outmoded but still materially dominant society, for which most of them have been loyal watchdogs.
The main shortcoming of modern art criticism is that it has never looked at the culture as a whole nor at the conditions of an experimental movement that is perpetually superseding it. At this point in time the increased domination of nature permits and necessitates the use of superior powers in the construction of life." -The Situationist International, Action in Belgium Against the International Assembly of Art Critics >"Karoshi (Japanese: 過労死, Hepburn: Karōshi), which can be translated into "overwork death", is a Japanese term relating to occupation-related sudden death.
The most common medical causes of karoshi deaths are heart attacks and strokes due to stress and malnourishment or fasting. Mental stress from the workplace can also cause workers to commit suicide in a phenomenon known as karōjisatsu (過労自殺)" >"The limits of capitalism are not fixed by fiat, but defined (and redefined) pragmatically and improvisationally. This makes capitalism very much like the Thing in John Carpenter's film of the same name: a monstrous, infinitely plastic entity, capable of metabolizing and absorbing anything with which it comes into contact. Capital, Deleuze and Guattari says, is a ‘motley painting of everything that ever was'; a strange hybrid of the ultra-modern and the archaic. In the years since Deleuze and Guattari wrote the two volumes of their Capitalism And Schizophrenia, it has seemed as if the deterritorializing impulses of capitalism have been confined to finance, leaving culture presided over by the forces of reterritorialization.
This malaise, the feeling that there is nothing new, is itself nothing new of course. We find ourselves at the notorious ‘end of history' trumpeted by Francis Fukuyama after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Fukuyama's thesis that history has climaxed with liberal capitalism may have been widely derided, but it is accepted, even assumed, at the level of the cultural unconscious. It should be remembered, though, that even when Fukuyama advanced it, the idea that history had reached a ‘terminal beach' was not merely triumphalist. Fukuyama warned that his radiant city would be haunted, but he thought its specters would be Nietzschean rather than Marxian. Some of Nietzsche's most prescient pages are those in which he describes the ‘oversaturation of an age with history'. ‘It leads an age into a dangerous mood of irony in regard to itself, he wrote in Untimely Meditations, ‘and subsequently into the even more dangerous mood of cynicism', in which ‘cosmopolitan fingering', a detached spectatorialism, replaces engagement and involvement. This is the condition of Nietzsche's Last Man, who has seen everything, but is decadently enfeebled precisely by this excess of (self) awareness." -Mark Fisher, Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative?
>The Socialist Patients' Collective (German: Sozialistisches Patientenkollektiv, and known as the SPK) is a patients' collective founded in Heidelberg, West Germany, in February 1970, by Wolfgang Huber (born 1935). The kernel of the SPK's ideological program is summated in the slogan, "Turn illness into a weapon", which is representative of an ethos that is continually and actively practiced under the new title, Patients' Front/Socialist Patients' Collective, PF/SPK(H). The first collective, SPK, declared its self-dissolution in July 1971 as a strategic withdrawal but in 1973 Huber proclaimed the continuity of SPK as Patients' Front.
The SPK assumes that illness exists as an undeniable fact and believe that it is caused by the capitalist system. The SPK promotes illness as the protest against capitalism and considers illness as the foundation on which to create the human species. The SPK is opposed to doctors, considering them to be the ruling class of capitalism and responsible for poisoning the human species. The most widely recognized text of the PF/SPK(H) is the communique, SPK – Turn illness into a weapon, which has prefaces by both the founder of the SPK, Wolfgang Huber, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Rejecting the roles and ideology associated with the notion of the revolutionary as scientific explainer, they stated in Turn Illness into a Weapon that whoever claims they want to "observe the bare facts dispassionately" is either an "idiot" or a "dangerous criminal."

Brazil’s gangsters have been getting into politics
They want friendly officials to help them launder money

At last, justice came. On October 31st two former policemen were sentenced to a combined 138 years in prison for murdering Marielle Franco, a councillor they killed in Rio de Janeiro in 2018. A gay black woman from a favela, Ms Franco was an icon of Brazil’s left. She had made it her mission to expose links between local politicians and militias in Rio. The assassination shocked a nation inured to violence. She may have been killed for denouncing attempts by militia members to seize public land illegally and build on it.
Founded by former policemen, Rio’s militias gained prominence in the 1990s by hunting down drug traffickers, winning the support of terrified residents and forging links with local politicians. Yet today they extract a security tax in areas they control and charge residents for access to gas, internet, transport services and electricity. More recently, they have started trafficking the drugs themselves. Brazil’s criminal groups are walking the militias’ path in reverse. Gangs are increasingly funding politicians, paying off local prosecutors and bureaucrats, and laundering their assets through the legal economy.
Take São Paulo, the country’s financial heartland. Unlike Rio, where the homicide rate runs at about 21 per 100,000, mainly because of turf wars between gangs and militias, São Paulo has long been relatively peaceful. That is because it is controlled by a single gang, the First Capital Command (PCC). Founded by inmates as a mutual-defence organisation after a prison massacre in 1992, the PCC expanded as Brazil’s incarceration rate ballooned in the 2000s. Today it is South America’s largest gang, counting 40,000 members and 60,000 affiliates. It is increasingly involved in politics and white-collar crime. “Brazil is experiencing what Italy experienced in the 1990s,” says Lincoln Gakiya, the lead prosecutor against the PCC in São Paulo, as his 24-hour bodyguards stand nearby.
In April the city government took over two private bus operators, which carry more than 16m passengers a month, after an investigation led by Mr Gakiya found that the companies were being used to launder money for the PCC. The gang is also suspected of controlling petrol stations across the country and of getting involved in public health-care services, property, illegal gold-mining and rubbish collection. In 2004, when Mr Gakiya began investigating, he reckoned it was making less than $2m a year. By 2020, it was thought to be netting $1bn annually. Most of that comes from outside Brazil, as the gang’s drug-trafficking operations have expanded around the world.

👏 Councillors from Boroughs across the Liverpool City Region gathered for the second Merseyside Councillors’ Conference hosted by the Police Commissioner.
👏 Commissioner Emily Spurrell first held the event in 2023 to bring elected representatives from across the county together with her office and Merseyside Police to discuss how they can work even closer together to build safer, stronger communities.
👏 Councillor Paul Stuart, Leader of Wirral Council, said: “This meeting is really important. As councillors across the Liverpool City Region, we tackle localised issues. But in areas such as crime and anti-social behaviour, there are a lot of common themes. By coming together, elected members across the Region are able to share knowledge and experience which we can then take back to our communities as best practice to support the work of Merseyside Police and the PCC.”

LNG Gains Momentum As A Readily Available Alternative Fuel For Shipping - Peninsula360
It’s been three years since Peninsula made the decision to build the Levante LNG, our dedicated 12,500-cbm LNG bunker vessel, developed in Hyundai Mipo Shipyard, South Korea, through a joint venture with our friends at ENAGAS’ affiliate Scale Gas. Fast forward to now, Levante LNG is fully operational and regularly supplying LNG as marine fuel in the Strait of Gibraltar and Western Mediterranean.
Three years might feel like the blink of an eye to some, but the period has been characterised by remarkable growth for the LNG bunkering market. DNV figures show that globally, the LNG-fuelled fleet has grown considerably since 2020 – with 717 LNG vessels currently in operation. A further 341 are now on order and set to join the mix soon.
Certainly, we’ve seen an uplift in interest in LNG from our customers in recent months. From supplying the Royal Caribbean Group’s cruise vessels Silver Nova and Icon of the Seas to Eastern Pacific’s tanker Starway, MSC’s containership Virginia and, more recently, K Line’s PCC Thor Highway, our Levante LNG bunker vessel has indeed been busy.
Why is demand for LNG bunkering growing?
Beyond shipping, global LNG trading has become strategic since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, particularly in Europe, where there have been efforts to find alternatives to Russian gas pipeline supplies.
Focusing on shipping, there is also significant regulatory pressure to reduce C02 and other emissions, like NOx & Sox, associated with the burning of conventional fuels in marine engines. The International Maritime Organisation has set a target for the shipping industry to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by, or around, 2050 and last January we saw the EU Emissions Trading System come into effect for the maritime sector. Ship operators are now effectively accruing a bill on their emissions for any voyages with a port of call in the EU, and shipping companies will soon need to surrender EU allowances corresponding to their reported aggregate emissions for 2024.
Regulatory pressure has therefore catalysed LNG’s remarkable growth trajectory and this surging demand shows no sign of stopping. Recent analysis from Ship & Bunker of DNV data on the orderbook for new vessels last year reveals that LNG is the most popular alternative bunker fuel, followed at a distance by methanol.
This is good news because as demand for LNG bunkering grows, LNG infrastructure is also improving, making it easier for ships to access LNG supplies all around the world. For a global industry that constantly grapples with re-routing, that’s crucial.
How will LNG help decarbonise shipping?
By transitioning to LNG now, which is readily available, ship operators and owners can slash their CO2 emissions by around 25%.
LNG is one of the cleanest-burning non-electric marine fuels available, producing significantly reduced amounts of CO2, NOX and SOx and virtually no particulates or ash. Not only is it far less carbon intensive than crude oil derived products, but it is also charting a course for even further emissions reductions through the development of bio-LNG and eventually synthetic LNG. This can help us achieve net zero by 2050.
The emerging bio-LNG market is scaling rapidly. Produced from natural waste streams, such as agricultural and forestry waste, sustainable bio-LNG even has the potential to capture methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere – so could be carbon-negative. Hot on its heels, research and development into synthetic LNG is ongoing. Synthetic LNG would be produced from renewable electricity to power fleets with 100% clean energy.
Want to find out more?
Your choice of fuel is a big deal – impacting on running costs, maintenance, and retrofit requirements, it can make or break a profitable trip.
LNG as a marine fuel is still relatively new and decarbonisation regulations are complex. At Peninsula, we have operations all around the world and a number of LNG experts who are happy to advise customers on their specific fuel needs and circumstances.
Our team of Alternative Fuels and Sustainability experts can be reached on [email protected] – do get in touch if you’re interested in discussing further.

my country is insane lmao...
shoutout to the irish people calling out the derry girls thing (although it does represent britain.... as bad. though im sure not the way these ministers intend).
Now I like carry on films AS A RELIC, a thing that can be funny but in no way something that needs to or should be recreated or revived. Love camp ate racism simple as.
It's incredible to me that they're citing 50 year old media that is no doubt beloved but not representative of britain at all in the modern day, as the image they want to export. Not suprising in the slightest, they see how well cutesy patriotism aren't we cute and quirky and not marred by imperialism and inequality at all content does internationally and want to promote this image moreso. I'm rambling here I'm struggling to articulate what it's making me think. There's just been so many more "british" shows from then to the present day, it's just they're not necessarily positive. Ofcom already caved to terf pressure to abandon stonewall and now the GOVERNMENT wants to mandate what shows get made and that they should be pro britain propaganda. Ugh.

Curious which of the families Duggar’s and Bates kids have married into are known IBLP families?
Which Duggar / Bates In–Laws Are Connected to IBLP?
Good Ask. Here’s what we know about the Duggar / Bates In–Laws’ ties to the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP)...
Anna (Keller) Duggar—She and Josh met at the annual ATI Homeschool Conference in Big Sandy, TX, an IBLP event. (Advanced Training Institute [ATI] is IBLP’s homeschool curriculum.)
Abbie (Burnett) Duggar—She was raised in IBLP, and her family did ATI Homeschool. (The Burnett Family provided a testimonial for ATI on ATI’s Website.)
Benjamin Seewald—Apparently, no IBLP connection. (Though he went to ATI’s Big Sandy Conference in 2013 to get closer to Jessa.) Sadly, he and his family are affiliated with Vision Forum, a similarly–terrible group.
Derick Dillard—Not affiliated w/ IBLP.
Jeremy Vuolo—Not affiliated w/ IBLP.
Kendra (Caldwell) Duggar—Duggar Data couldn’t find a IBLP link, but her father, Pastor Paul Caldwell, is well–known for spewing bigotry and hate.
Lauren (Swanson) Duggar—Like Josh + Anna, Josiah + Lauren met at the ATI Homeschool Conference. Lauren’s Father, Dwain Swanson, has also been featured as a speaker at IBLP events. (Here’s one example.)
Austin Forsyth—Attended Journey to The Heart, an IBLP youth retreat, in 2010. Austin works at his parents’ business, Fort Rock Family Camp, which has played host to all sorts of slimy characters, notably Michael + Debi Pearl, authors of a child abuse handbook.
... and, the Bateses—
Whitney (Perkins) Bates—Couldn’t find any affiliation w/ IBLP.
Brandon Keilen—Worked at IBLP Headquarters for years, and possibly still works for IBLP. Attended IMI, an IBLP–run Bible College. Also, met Michaela at IBLP Headquarters, just before she departed for Journey to the Heart—an IBLP–run youth brainwashing retreat.
Chad Pain—His Father, Dr. Paine, is on IBLP’s Board of Directors. Also, Chad worked at IBLP Headquarters, where he led two youth programs—Journey to the Heart and LifeFocus. Additionally, Erin + Chad met at the IBLP Valentine’s Day Banquet in 2011, at IBLP Headquarters. When they married, Bill Gothard gave the opening prayer, and they served a birthday cake for him at their reception. (Barf.)
John Webster—The Webster Family started following IBLP / Bill Gothard in 1984, raised their children in it, and homeschooled with ATI. They have spoken at IBLP / ATI events, and openly embrace the cult’s teachings.
Bobby Smith—No obvious affiliation with IBLP; however, he did attend a hyper–conservative college—Pensacola Christian College (PCC). It’s not IBLP–affiliated, but its teaching are just as bad.
Evan Stewart—Couldn’t find any affiliation with IBLP.
Kelton Balka—No obvious affiliation with IBLP. Like Bobby, Kelton is an alumnus of hyper–conservative PCC.
Travis Clark—Couldn’t find any affiliation with IBLP.
Thanks for this Ask, it was really interesting to type this up!

Brazil presidential election enters final, dirty phase
On October 2, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva – popularly known as “Lula” – missed an outright victory in the first round of Brazil’s presidential election by only 1.86 million votes. Two weeks from now, on October 30, the former president – who governed from 2003 until 2011 – will have to face incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro in a runoff election to determine who will lead one of the world’s largest democracies.
The first round saw Lula, of the left-wing Workers’ Party, secure 48.4% of the vote, with the right-wing Bolsonaro close behind at 43.2%. The centrist candidates brought up the rear, with Senator Simone Tebet and career politician Ciro Gomes getting 4% and 3% respectively. About 20% of Brazilians abstained, with a few extra million people casting blank or ruined ballots.
As Lula and Bolsonaro race to the finish line, the attacks being hurled in an already-bitter electoral battle have gotten even dirtier. Lula’s campaign has accused Bolsonaro (albeit unseriously) of cannibalism, bestiality and Freemasonry. A judge even stepped in to ban some of these provocative ads. Meanwhile, Bolsonaro’s team has insisted on comparing Lula to the devil, while making allegations that the former president is affiliated with the PCC – the First Command of the Capital – the largest criminal gang in the country.

OCI Renewal Australia Made Simple: Avoid Travel Delays & Legal Complications with Expert Help

If you're part of the Indian diaspora living in Australia, you've likely heard about the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. It’s a vital document that grants you visa-free travel to India and several long-term residency benefits. But what happens when your OCI card needs to be updated or renewed?
Whether it’s due to a new passport, a name change, or age-based requirements, OCI renewal is a process many Indians living overseas must go through. Unfortunately, the renewal process can be confusing, time-consuming, and if done incorrectly, may even disrupt your travel plans or create unnecessary legal issues.
At Bharat Suvidha, we specialise in assisting with OCI renewal in Australia, ensuring the process is smooth, accurate, and stress-free.
Why Is OCI Renewal Important?
Your OCI card isn’t a one-time application. Over the years, updates may be required in cases such as:
Renewal of your passport (especially for those under 20 or over 50 years of age)
Changes in your name or appearance
Any discrepancies or missing documents in your original OCI application
Failure to renew or update your OCI on time can result in entry denial at Indian immigration or complications with visa status. That’s why understanding the OCI renewal Australia process is essential for hassle-free travel and legal peace of mind.
Common Challenges with OCI Renewal
If you’ve ever attempted the process yourself, you’ll know it's not always straightforward. Many face issues like:
Incorrect document uploads
Missing information on forms
Unclear instructions on the Indian Government’s website
Unexpected rejection of applications
This is especially true if you're trying to manage everything alone. But here's the good news: you don’t have to.

This year has already been bloody in Rio de Janeiro. The city’s police have killed people at a rate of more than three a day, according to state officials — including as many as 15 in a single operation against drug dealers on one February day alone. Witnesses claim at least nine were executed while trying to surrender.
Local politicians have hailed the police operations as a success. Others say they are a taste of what is to come under the new Brazilian government led by rightwing president Jair Bolsonaro, who was elected last year partly on a promise of getting tough on crime.
“The number of people killed in police actions has taken off in the past few weeks,” said Pedro Strozenberg, ombudsman at the Rio de Janeiro state public defender’s office. “It is the concrete result of a logic in public security policy of non-recognition of people’s rights.”... As security minister, Mr Jungmann introduced a “single system of public security” (SUSP), designed to replace “headless federalism with co-ordinated federalism”. It placed a legal obligation on police and other security forces to set targets and deliver results. But others fear the SUSP will be sidelined before it has a chance to be proven.
The new government’s security policy, delivered to Congress in a draft “anti-crime” bill last month, includes provisions for judges to reduce penalties or not apply them at all in cases where police use excessive force as a result of “excusable fear, surprise or violent emotion”. Mr Bolsonaro has already used decree powers to loosen controls on gun ownership, and his supporters hope he will deliver on a campaign promise to give greater freedom for people to carry firearms with them.
The SUSP, said Mr Strozenberg, “is buried, at least for the next four years”. That may prove particularly true in Rio, where the state governor was elected last year after promising to use snipers to shoot anyone carrying a gun in the favelas, “in their little heads”.
Some police may have taken the hint. After his meeting with the FT, Mr Strozenberg was on his way to Manguinhos, a Rio favela, to continue an investigation into suspected sniping from an adjacent police tower. Six people had been shot dead in recent months, he said.
“If you are on a motorbike, you’re wearing a backpack and you’re black . . . They’re not aiming at particular individuals,” he added. “It’s just a profile.”
Brazil Clampdown on Gang-Controlled Prisons Unlikely to Succeed
This is just the latest move from authorities during the early tenure of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro to clamp down on the country’s gang-controlled prisons.
In early January, for example, northeast Ceará state’s new top prison official, Luis Mauro Albuquerque, promised to stop segregating the prison population based on gang affiliation and crackdown on cell phone use, which authorities say would make it harder for gang leaders to maintain order both within and outside of prison.
The gang response was rapid and violent. The PCC and Red Command (Comando Vermelho), along with their local rivals in the Guardians of the State (Guardiões do Estado – GDE) and Family of the North (Família do Norte – FDN), called a truce and carried out hundreds of attacks primarily on infrastructure in dozens of municipalities across the state.
The PCC’s opposing reactions to the prison measures are likely tied to geography. The PCC dominates in southern Brazil and its home state of São Paulo, where the group’s base is strongest. The PCC’s place in northern Brazil, on the other hand, is much more tentative. The group is working to expand into the region and battling rivals in an effort to win control over illicit economies.
